2017 Jeep Cherokee Review: Unreliable Midsize SUV With Transmission Problems Buyers Should Avoid

Alex Showalter
Nov 29, 2022

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee only lasts around 150,000 miles with serious engine and transmission problems. At $15,750 to $21,300, it’s cheaper than most other SUVs, yet not worth the money when a sudden failure can cost thousands to repair.

likeFilled The Good
The 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen system works well, Trailhawk model is great off-road and the interior is more luxurious than the competition.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The nine-speed transmission shifts poorly, the base engine is weak for an SUV of its size and visibility is poor out of the rear.

Is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2017 is a bad year for the 2017 Jeep Cherokee since there are a lot of problems reported, giving it a low overall score. Owner reviews complain about transmission problems, expensive repair bills, as well as leaks.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are much nicer than a lot of other SUVs, the seats are very comfortable, although the cargo area is small.
  • Reliability 5/10 – There are a lot of transmission & engine problems found on the 2017 Cherokee. Avoid models from 20142017, as well as 2019. Models from 2018, along with 2020-2022 are much more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is poor from the standard 4-cylinder engine, while the optional V6 is decently powerful for an SUV of its size.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. Optional upgrades include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, parallel park assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, & brake assist.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 25 MPG, giving 395 miles of range from the 15.8 gallon tank. Gas costs are $28 cheaper than average, at $220 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The 2018 Jeep Cherokee is cheap, yet a combination of rapid depreciation paired with expensive mechanical problems make it a bad value.

It is equipped with four wheel drive.
It is an SUV. It has 4 wheel drive that I need. It is loaded with all the amenities. Nice styling and great color. Gets great gas mileage.

Great size, nice design, great looking dashboard.
Love everything about vehicle, like the fact it's a small SUV but drives like a car, I do not feel like I;m in a truck. Has a great dashboard, important to me. Could use a better trim inside, a little plain. Leather seat are greats, comfortable and enough leg room in back seat, trunk in perfect size.

Great car, would buy again and again.
Awesome vehicle, great gas mileage, comfort interior, great sound system. Very easy to drive, had get up and go when you need it. Dash tells you everything that may be a problem or that needs adjustment, love the no hands calling, and the back up camera.

Comfortable ride and stylish look. Smooth ride even with cargo in the back.
I love the style and comfort of my jeep. It is perfect size for my needs and gets great gas mileage. The quality of my vehicle is phenomenal! I like the moon roof and that I can adjust how much of the roof is exposed. I would have preferred leather seats otherwise I wouldn't change anything about my vehicle.

Outstanding safety features that I would never drive without.
We love our 2017 Jeep Cherokee outlander! It has numerous safety features such as auto parking, backup and side cameras, side mirrors shows side vehicles, auto braking, GPS, air bags, leather interior, moonroof, air conditioned front seats, auto wiper blades.

Best vehicle purchase ever.
Overall, the 2017 jeep Cherokee is a fantastic car. It was my first car when I first learned how to drive. It can be expensive to fill the car up with gas but it is worth it for a smooth driving experience. In particular, it offers a large screen for the radio and navigation. Also, it has a lot of a room for what looks like a small car. Overall, definitely worth the purchase!
accountCircle halie G
It still smallish, but very spacious and all my added features really combine.
I love the features like heated seats and steering wheel. The radio is nice and big, especially when I get calls it is so efficient to answer and call. I also like that you can change the volume and song on the steering wheel, the trunk is very spacious and can fit so much. The seats go down which is very convenient.

Fully loaded 4wd sport utility vehicle.
My vehicle is extremely comfortable to drive. The larger navigation/control screen is very helpful. The gas mileage could be better. I am used to driving a car rather than an SUV so the pick up in a car is much better. Also, for a 4wd, it does not do great in the snow.

Would not buy a jeep Cherokee sport SUV.
Not comfortable, no tinted windows, hard to see with sides blocking the front when checking for traffic on both sides, no lift gate access with remote, no keyless entry, no remote start, 4 cylinder yet does not get good gas mileage, seats are not comfortable, takes fully synthetic oil for having a non efficient motor, resulting in the most expensive oil changes, not fast, do not like appearance.

Do not buy a car with adaptive transmission.
Transmission has been nothing but trouble. Been in and out of the shop repeatedly. I would never buy another.

Besides having the best version of the car examples leather seats and heating I don't trust Jeep
Within the first 6 months of having my car it would completely shut down on the freeway or street at random times

The shifter needs service and no one know why that shows up on the dash.
The vehicle is not very old and it is now telling me to service my shifter. No garage knows how to fix this issue and jeep don't care. It does drive nice except it feels like there are times when driving it feels as if it's slipping into gear. The car could be of better quality.

Piece of junk
It’s a 2017. Been back at the dealership 4 times. Coolant thermostat went in 10000 miles, battery went at 15000 miles, coil pack went at 25,000 miles, and now at 38000 miles my Jeep stalls out when I first drive it. Bought it brand new with 9miles

Oil burner
We are using 1 quart every 1,000 miles under warranty. They are saying not their fault. So if you buy one always keep quart of oil ready to use

It's a piece of junk. Will never buy a Jeep again.
What could go wrong has. Tranny leaks oil leaks water cooling in and soaking inside plus there is a short somewhere. I wish we never bought it. My 2006 car runs better than this piece. The warranty company take forever to do anything about it. Trying to have them buy it back.

It's a piece of junk. And they don't stand by their brand. No help from mopar at all.
It only has 7000 miles on it. Been in the shop more then half the time we owned it. Will never buy a jeep again.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Cherokee?

  • Consumer Reports says the Jeep Cherokee fails to get a lot of the day-to-day basics right, with low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Cherokee at 3.5/5, praising the available 8.4-inch touchscreen stereo system, but doesn’t like the small cargo capacity.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2017 Jeep Cherokee at 3.9/5, enjoying the high-end interior options, but owners don’t like the weak 4-cylinder engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Jeep Cherokee Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Jeep Cherokee include irregular shifting between gears, the engine stalling while driving, along with failures to start. Overall, these problems are more severe than other SUVs, leading to higher repair bills as the Cherokee ages.

Irregular shifting between gears shows up on a lot of Cherokee models in the first 35,000 miles. There are two major sources of the problem. The first is software which dealerships can update for around $100. Physical damage to the transmission is the second, which costs around $1,600 to fix, or $3,500 to replace.

The engine stalling while driving has also been reported on the 2017 Jeep Cherokee at 40,000 miles. There are software updates which fix some of the issues for around $150, while others have failed head gaskets. If the head gasket fails, you will usually need to replace the engine, costing over $6,000.

Failure to start is another common complaint by owners of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee at around 50,000 miles. The main computer is known to fail as the SUV ages, and has to be replaced. The problem isn’t as widespread as older computer failures on Jeeps, but it still shows up. Changing out the computer costs around $6,000.

There are 4 recalls, which is similar to other SUVs from 2017. The most serious recall covers the power transfer unit input splines, which may break, leading to a rollaway. Jeep will replace the parts and update the software on affected models. Other recalls are less severe including missing labels and some welding issues which only affect 88 models.

How Long Will the 2017 Jeep Cherokee Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Jeep Cherokee should last around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as the top-rated Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than other SUVs, according to data from Repair Pal, at $428 per year.

As a 2017 Jeep Cherokee reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the oil pan gasket for $500, control arms costing $600, as well as the transmission mounts, which cost around $200.

accountCircle S L

I haven't had any problems with the mechanics of the car, the only problem I've had was related to a software download issue.

accountCircle Cindy A

No, we have not have any mechanical problems with the SUV. Having a 6 cylinder gives you more powers for acceleration.

accountCircle Hannah R

Never had problems at all! It drives really good and gets pretty good gas! Other than a popped tire though, awesome car.

accountCircle Steven P

Very good SUV. I would buy another one like it again. It runs great with good gas mileage. I love it best SUV I have had.

accountCircle John S

Yes I've owned jeeps in the past and always had a good reliable vehicles with never any problems iop.

accountCircle Mel C

Yes, the jeep Cherokee limited is reliable. It does not currently have any major problems. It is safe and comfortable.

accountCircle Esbeidy H

For the amount of fine I have had my jeep for, almost two years; I am comfortable saying it is very reliable; I haven't had any issues with it lately. Other than if you do not change the oil at the suggested and needed time. The engine stops and does not allow you to keep driving; protecting the motor.

accountCircle Stac J

It has been very reliable and I have not had any problems with it to date. Only taken in for regular maintenance and oil changes.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2017 Jeep Cherokee, offering a standard 5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth. There’s an optional, larger 8.4-inch touchscreen Uconnect system available as well.

Safety technology is worse than other SUVs with no standard advanced safety features. Optional upgrades include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parallel park assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, brake assist, as well as lane departure warning.

Is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee a Good Value?

No, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee is not a good value since there are some expensive problems with them. Blue book fair market prices range from $15,750 to $21,300, making it cheaper than a Honda Pilot or Mazda CX-9. When new, the price range was $23,695 to $37,695. Depreciation is worse than other SUVs, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Jeep Cherokee was launched in 2014, and is still in production as of 2022.

2015: Standard rearview camera on Latitude and Trailhawk models, optional frontal-crash mitigation system, auto stop-start added to V6 models.

2016: Siri Eyes Free added to Uconnect system.

2017: Standard Xenon headlights on all models except for Sport, new Overland model.

2018: New Latitude Plus model added to the lineup.

2019: Minor exterior styling changes, optional 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo, upgraded stereo system.

2020: No major changes.

2021: More safety features included as standard, new Latitude Lux & 80th Anniversary editions added.

How Does the Jeep Cherokee Compare to the Competition?

The Jeep Cherokee is one of the worst midsize SUVs offered in 2017 since there are a lot of engine and transmission problems reported as they age, making it one buyers should avoid.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is another SUV offered by Jeep which costs around $5,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Jeep Cherokee has lower ownership costs. We recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee for most buyers since there are fewer mechanical problems.

The Toyota 4Runner is a competitor which costs about $8,500 more. Off-road performance is better in the Toyota 4Runner, while the Jeep Cherokee has a more upscale interior for the money. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner since they last much longer, have fewer mechanical issues, and hold their value better.

Do Owners Recommend the Jeep Cherokee?

accountCircle S L

Yes, it is stylish and reliable and good in the snow. I enjoy the leather and interior which is comfortable and luxurious for a mid size SUV.

accountCircle Cindy A

Yes, I have had good success with this SUV. There are a few things that I would change about it. The engine shuts off when you are driving and stop unless you hit the button on the inside to prevent it. This is supposed to make for better fuel economy, but truthfully it startles you if you do not know about it.

Yes very good. I have no problems with it and the dealership was great. The battery was the only problem so far and the dealership replaced under warranty.

I have only had one issue with my jeep Cherokee. It has a service shifter light that keeps coming on, which the part is on national backorder from what I understand. Other than that issue, it has been an amazing vehicle for me and my family. It drives/rides great and has the perfect amount of space.

The car is excellent in all types of weather. I like the anti slip feature that allows me to adjust the traction of the car based on weather or location. It is comfortable and versatile. 2017 jeep Cherokee: comfort and tech all in one!
The 2017 jeep Cherokee limited is a very reliable vehicle chalk full of features that have made my trips easy and convenient. My favorite feature in my jeep is the large touch screen GPS system. Having a GPS built in to my car has been a great help for navigation especially when driving through areas where your phones GPS would drop connection. Aside from the tech, the 2017 jeep Cherokee is incredibly comfortable and spacious for long trips. The overall vehicle size has been perfect for my lifestyle.

A generally great ride with nice features.
I love this car because it is very large and the seats are heated. The gas mileage is alright, and it runs very well. The jeep I have is lifted so it is very tall and it's good to see over traffic. It is a comfortable ride and I recommend this vehicle, and so do a lot of other people because I see them very often on the road where I live.

White jeep Cherokee, navigation included.
The automatic braking feature is not very reliable (it will automatically break when I do not need it to). Additionally the big default of this car is that it does not have apple play, which most other car brands do. Other than that, the interior of the car (leather, speakers, room) is all very well rated to me.

I love my jeep and would recommend it to anyone on the fence.
It is comfortable and reliable. I love the heated seats, remote start, and digital display. It also gets relatively good mileage for an SUV. One thing I do not like is the automatic shut off of the engine when stopped at traffic lights/stop signs. I know it is meant to be a benefit but I feel like it will eventually wear out the starter.

It not worth it. Cherokee come with a lot of transmission problems and electrical problems. Heat and the coolant hoses are really cheat they break off easy and also the part or not cheap. The amount of money I pay for and also the money I invested in that car with part I could've put a better car.

From mountains to date night, our jeep does it all.
It is sporty, and off road which is great for adventures, but it also cleans up nice for date nights. We love that the seats fold down, as we often go places with our three dogs. We also just had a baby, and there’s still plenty of room for him, and the fur babies. It is very comfortable and we've taken many trips from Florida to northern Michigan in it. Great road trip vehicle. It is really the best of both worlds for a sleek SUV. The safety features, like the back up cam, have really come in handy!

The jeep Cherokee sport has acceptable & well performance. Tire grip is very in weather conditions & turns are very smooth with the factory steering. Design of the vehicle is sporty & sharp. I love my jeep - it is so durable & has lasted me for years!!
My jeep is fantastic and has lasted me for a few years now. I have traveled across the country with it and it has lasted. It drives super smoothly and is a fantastic car to drive for miles. I love how the steering wheel turns and my parents say it drives better than the BMW x5 my family owns. I can see myself driving this car for years to come and come with me across the country multiple times. Also, it is good in any terrain. I live primarily in Colorado, and it handles mountain ranges and snow very well. I have barely had any problems with it and I believe it will stay like this. Also, my whole family has started driving in this car, including me. It means a lot to us, and it will surely mean a lot to you.

Love the car itself, but wish I had added a few upgrades to make the car more updated. Without simple upgrades such as rear view camera, and stereo, the car is very basic. This is the first jeep I've owned and I am never going back! Jeep cherokee’s are an amazing choice for anyone single and perfect for families. Performance is all around a 10/10. I've had some issues with spark plugs but had them replaced the first year owning the vehicle and they haven't been a problem since. I commute to school and work in a busy metropolitan city and this has been a reliable component through it all! The best feature besides the heated leather seats and the sunroof, would have to be the 4 wheel drive.

Comfortable and roomy for my dogs and baby.
I really love my Cherokee. I feel safe in it and it is a smooth ride. It is roomy enough for my two dogs and baby to fit in comfortably, but if we are going on a vacation we do not have room for luggage and use a box on top of the car. It has electrical seat and mirror adjusters and heated seats. There is a touchscreen for the radio and I can hook up my phone via Bluetooth easily.

I like that my Jeep fits my sons carseat in the backseat while I people in the front can still sit comfortably. It also get good gas mileage and it drives smooth over bumps and bad roads. I wish the back cargo area was bigger but it's better than the compact car I had before.
It drives really well in any kind of weather even though it's not a 4 wheel drive.

2017 white with black trim jeep Cherokee.
Love my jeep! Very reliable and comfortable the seats are amazing, I go on lots of trips and so far it has been up to my standards. My favorite feature is the detailing on the interior and the panoramic sunroof, that was the winner for me. Great on gas mileage even though it is an SUV.

2017 jeep Cherokee: avoid at all costs.
The 4 cylinder engine in my 2017 jeep Cherokee burns an excessive amount of oil. The engineers designing the vehicle felt the best way to address this issue is not to alert drivers by an onboard message, but shutting the engine down when low oil is detected, and placing it in a limp/low power mode. This is a well documented issue. It is incredibly dangerous, and the only advice from the service techs is to routinely check the oil, and add quarts, in between oil changes. This vehicle is ridiculous.

Love my jeep Cherokee Trailhawk.
My jeep is super comfortable and is great for longer car rides. It handles great in the rain and snow. Never had a problem and love the 4 wheel drive. I feel completely safe driving in any weather condition. I have had zero problems since I bought my jeep 2 years ago. Love the look of it as well.

Jeep altitude great car for a great price. Handles the snow easily.
We've owned this car since 2017 and there have been no issues. Great gas mileage and very spacious for a family of 4. The jeep handles great whether it is on the highway or on the side streets. When it snows the jeep has pushes through it with ease. Great price for a great car.

Review of grey jeep Cherokee 2017!
Super reliable and great performance! No issues yet. I have had this vehicle for a little less than a year and love it a lot and have experienced no issues. Great comfort and features! I love the look. It has a jeep look but also a stable and reliable feeling with nice new features.

Sharp looking Jeep that has been very reliable.
It gets good gas mileage for a SUV. I have had no problems with it. I bought it a year ago. It is very comfortable and is a smooth ride. I like the automatic start and heated seats. It is a sharp looking vehicle.

Great compact SUV with some room for improvement.
Vehicle runs great. Radio has an issue with connecting to Bluetooth. Either it does not find items or when it does it shows the wrong number of songs on a list. Only thing I would want more of its trunk space. It does not fit all that much, but it does the job when the seats are down. I would also like the passenger seat to have buttons to adjust it instead of the manual levers.

Great car that is perfect for all ages.
The automatic hatch is unreliable and does not always open or it does not always latch shut to make it work you need to disconnect the battery and restart the car and hope that will work. The car is overall great and is very comfortable and reliable I love it.

Not highly recommended for gas.
Not applicable; car is used for work and travel at times. Had recent issue with battery not lasting even the three years. Overall not a bad vehicle but would prefer something more gas efficient. Depreciation of market value is ridiculously low and makes It Difficult to trade in when necessary.

2017 Jeep Cherokee latitude with an attitude.
I have been driving my Jeep Cherokee for about 1 month. I love many of the features except for the stop/start. I am trying to get used to it before I decide to just turn it off. I also wish the side mirrors would fold in. My previous car was 10 years old, so many of the standard features seem new and luxurious to me.

It shuts off at lights and drives me nuts. I can turn it off tho
I like that it runs good. I wish it was higher up off the ground

Jeep Cherokee great review!
My car is very reliable. The speed is very fast & super fun to drive. The car itself is very easy to drive and a safe car. The interior is nice & comforting. It is spacious & can hold a lot of things. The only seat w/ an electrical seat adjuster is the driver seat which is kind of annoying that the car is a nice new car w/ only one seat being able to move electrically.

Great storage space and good on gas!
I really like my Jeep Cherokee. I feel that the jeep is large enough for my growing family. There is also a great deal of storage space in it for groceries or to transport our large dog.

My great experience with my jeep.
Not the smoothest ride. Great on gas mileage. Very powerful. Sound system is amazing. Interior and exterior lighting is great. Very spacious. Very reliable. This vehicle come equipped with backup camera. Blind spot indicator. Leather interior is very smooth and easy to clean.
