2018 Jeep Cherokee Review: Reliable & Comfortable SUV With Good Off-Road Capabilities

Alex Showalter
Dec 6, 2022

The 2018 Jeep Cherokee lasts around 200,000 miles with some average throttle body and transmission software issues. At $16,575 to $23,150, it’s a decent value for an SUV with a nice interior and advanced technology.

likeFilled The Good
The cabin is very quiet for an SUV, the upgraded 8.4-inch touchscreen stereo system is nice, and the Trailhawk model is great off-road.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The nine-speed transmission feels slow, the base 4-cylinder engine is weak and rear visibility is poor with the wide rear pillars.

Is the 2018 Jeep Cherokee a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2018 is a decent year for the Jeep Cherokee, although it’s only average compared to other SUVs on the market. Owner reviews praise the comfortable cabin, smooth suspension, as well as the powerful stereo system.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are nice for an SUV in its price range, the seats reasonably comfortable, although the cargo space low.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are some engine problems reported, yet they are not as widespread as in earlier models. Avoid Cherokee models from 20142016, while 20172021 are more reliable choices.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is poor with the 4-cylinder engine, while the V6 offers a decent amount of power for the size of the Cherokee.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2018 Cherokee is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. A rearview camera is standard. Optional safety tech upgrades include blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning with brake assist, adaptive cruise control, as well as lane departure warning.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 25 MPG, giving 395 miles of range from the 15.8 gallon tank. Gas costs are $37 cheaper than average at $209 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2018 Jeep Cherokee is a decent value since they’re cheaper than a lot of other SUVs, while still being reliable.

Love this model of jeep Cherokee.
Love all of the features about this car. Gas tank is too small. Comfortable have change stuck in the steering wheel. The seats are comfortable and warm. The color is silver and looks sporty. The sport mode is a wonderful feature and the ability to shift is a great feature for the snow.

It gets great gas mileage!
We have had no issues with out 2018 Cherokee. It is a quiet ride with Bluetooth capabilities. The back seats do slide up and back, which is nice.

Very comfortable family vehicle. Plenty of space for travel or grocery getting.
Very comfortable! Extremely reliable. Has yet to give us any issues. With the roof rack we've installed there’s a lot of road noise but that is the only issue I have ever found but has nothing to do with the car itself. Touchscreen radio makes for easy access and use. Love the backup camera!

Review of Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus
No problems with the car at all. Comfortable to drive both short and long distances. I would recommend it for a smaller SUV

I have never had a vehicle with Bluetooth features in it until I got this jeep.
This vehicle (jeep Cherokee 2018) is the most reliable car I have owned. A very smooth drive and plenty of room for passengers. After one year of having the vehicle I have experienced 0 problems with the car. I love it. Much better than my previous cars and has all of the additional features that I need/like to have.

2018 jeep Cherokee limited.
I absolutely love my jeep Cherokee limited. It has everything that was a must on my list including heated leather seats, heated steering wheel, dual temperature control and rear backup camera. The only thing I wish it had is a sunroof but that wasn't a deal breaker. The ride is smooth and comfortable. The only problem I have had with the car is that the battery died after a little over two years of having the car, it was covered by my warranty though so I didn't have to pay anything. I would highly recommend buying a jeep.

Sporty, but still towards the luxury end of an SUV.
Does have some electrical issues but for the most part it is great. The wiring harness had to be replaced because it will not shift into 4 wheel drive. Interior is leather. Very sporty looking. Very comfortable. I love the colors. Reliable and fun to drive.

The perfect winter vehicle.
At the moment my vehicle does not have any problems, the performance on the vehicle is great and very noticeable in the winter weather. As for the interrupt the front seats are very comfortable but the back not so much, the car is very efficient on gas and pretty much almost everything else.

Frequent Mechanical issues
I have had my vehicle since new and do the recommended service required timely. I had my Air conditioning go out in the middle of summer driving thru the desert in Arizona 123 degrees out there so imagine that.... I was able to get an appointment as it is required due to covid, and when i turned it on the next day, the A/C worked just fine so the dealership said i had to wait for it to have the same malfunction and take it then. Fortunately A/C was making a hissing sound and once they reinspected it they realized there were some issues that were resolved, so I won't find out until my next road trip if this is the case. Then my car has started to overheat as a do a lot of driving and make a lot of stops thru out the day, the longer I am in the car the hotter the dashboard gets to the point that my feet are extremely hot from being in the drivers seat and when I turn on the air vents to get some circulation going the air comes out warm, without it being set to heat ofcourse. So I took it back for service and since car was looked into the following day when engine had cooled there were no apparent problems and car was returned to me stating everything was fine. I will be trading in my car needless to say and never ever getting another one of their brands due to the disservice and poor attitude. I paid for a brand new car so that I wouldn't have to worry about having mechanical issues.

Pretty blue jeep Cherokee.
I have had no mechanical issues out of my car. It is comfortable and drives well. Overall I have no complaints about the vehicle. I am just not a SUV person. The color blue of my car is beautiful. The gas mileage is great!! Honestly it is an excellent daily driver.

2018 Cherokee Limited Needs New Tranmission
I owned my Jeep for one year on March 1st. With less than 10,000 km, it has been in for servicing for engine on light 4 times. One time, I was left on the side of the road with no power. It has been at the dealership for 4 weeks waiting for a new transmission. For some reason, the transmission has not been shipped from the factory yet. I paid more for this vehicle than I paid for my first house and all total it has been in the shop for one month out of the 12 I have owned it. I would never buy another one. I have spoken to other previous owners and discovered this is not an unusual occurrence. I should have asked more questions before I bought it.

The moon roof is great. One of the best features.
Downsized from a grand to a regular Cherokee. Feel like the interior is pretty, but the outside feels cheap.

Not reliable
I have owned my 2018 Jeep Cherokee Limited for one year today and I was supposed to pick it up today after it's third time in for engine light being on. Each time it was a different code. The latest was for a transmission module replacement. They just called to tell me to not come pick it up because the engine light is on again and they have to bring it back into the shop. Once, it stalled while I was driving 85 km an hour in the highway. VERY dangerous. They could not tell me what happened. If I could give it back, I would.
accountCircle Lisa B
I love the heated seats and the heated steering wheel!
The vehicle is a lot lighter than I initially thought. It drives okay but the pickup from a stop is slow. The interior is nice and the design of the car has things within an easy reach. The vehicle sets too low to the ground making you feel more like you are in a car rather than an SUV. If I had to do it again, I would spend the additional money and purchase the grand Cherokee. As for the design of the vehicle, I am a fan of a more boxy model rather than the almost minivan body style.

BURNS OIL
I have 2018 a Jeep Cherokee latitude. Jeep kept cutting off sometimes when I would drive it. When oil gets low motor will shut off. It would stall when making turns. I looked for leaks and didn't find any leaks. I noticed the jeep burns at least 2-3 quarts of oil every 2,000 to 3,000 miles. I called Dealer and Chrysler Corp. They said the same thing. I HAVE TO CHECK THE OIL WEEKLY Now. I have to fill up with oil between oil changes. Sad, This jeep burns oil like a old car.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Cherokee?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Jeep Cherokee fills a good spot between a compact and midsize SUV, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Cherokee at 3.6/5, praising the smooth suspension on rough roads, but doesn’t like the weak 4-cylinder engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Cherokee a 3.9/5, enjoying the powerful V6 engine, but owners don’t like the lack of room in the cabin.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Jeep Cherokee Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Jeep Cherokee include the engine shutting down while driving, failure to shift into higher gears, as well as splitting leather on the seats. Overall, these problems are similar to other SUVs, with lower estimated repair costs as well.

The engine shutting down while driving is the most widespread complaint from 2018 Jeep Cherokee owners at roughly 20,000 miles. There is a known problem with the throttle body which causes the engine to stall. Replacing the throttle body fixes the problem, costing around $450. There’s also an oil pump failure which can cause the engine to stall, which is addressed by a recall.

Failure to shift into higher gears has also been reported by Cherokee owners at around 1,000 miles. There’s a software update for the transmission which improves shifting performance. Most dealers will install the software for free, while some may charge up to $100.

Splitting leather on the seats also shows up on some Jeep Cherokee models at 30,000 miles. The side of the driver’s front seat in particular, wears down quickly as people get in and out of the SUV. There are several solutions. Installing a seat cover costs around $50, repairing the leather costs $200, while new leather is about $800.

There are 6 recalls on the 2018 Jeep Cherokee, which is more than many other SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers a potential fuel leak which could lead to a fire. Jeep will replace the fuel tube on models with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine for free. Other recalls cover cruise control, as well as the voltage regulator, which Jeep will also repair for free.

How Long Will the 2018 Jeep Cherokee Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Jeep Cherokee can last around 200,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are more affordable than other SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $376 per year.

As a 2018 Jeep Cherokee reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the A/C direr for $350, blower motor costing $275, as well as the radiator hose which costs around $550.

Reliable yes. Had an issue of the battery dying in the middle of the summer but it was replaced. No other issues so far.

accountCircle Jennifer G

Yes. My only complaint is that they new jeeps do not come with a spare tire only an air compressor. Which is nice but have been stuck on the side of the road in the country with a flat.

accountCircle Kathleen C

We have never had any problems with this vehicle. Very dependable. Starts every time, runs like a dream.

accountCircle Megan K

I have experienced trouble with stopping and starting where it seems as if there's a stall and it jerks forward.

accountCircle Kali M

It is reliable. I have not encountered any problems however I only owned it for 2 years. I only have good things to say.

accountCircle Nora C

I think that it is very reliable because there are many safety features regarding its performance which make me feel much more protected. I personally don't see any problems with it

accountCircle Bobby S

Yes it is reliable. The only issue I've had with it is something wrong with the shifter which needs to be fixed under the warranty. Other than that I've had little problems with her.

accountCircle Chris B

It has been extremely reliable. The only issue we had was a trim piece that came off from the front wheel fender.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good in the 2018 Jeep Cherokee offering a standard 5-inch touchscreen. There’s a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, which is available as an optional upgrade.

Safety technology is also great for an SUV with a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, brake assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic high beam headlights, as well as parallel park assist.

Is the 2018 Jeep Cherokee a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Jeep Cherokee is a decent value since it holds up well over time while being affordable to maintain. Blue book fair market prices range from $16,575 to $23,150, making it cheaper than a Honda Pilot or Subaru Outback. When new, the price range was $24,395 to $37,340. Depreciation is similar to other midsize SUVs, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Jeep Cherokee came out in 2014, and is still in production as of 2022.

2015: Engine stop-start on V6 models, rearview camera on Latitude and Trailhawk models.

2016: Siri Eyes Free added to 8.4-inch Uconnect system.

2017: Standard Xenon headlights on all models except for Sport, Overland model introduced.

2018: New Latitude Plus model added to the lineup.

2019: Minor exterior styling changes, new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine offered, upgraded stereo system.

2020: No major changes.

2021: More standard safety features across the lineup, Latitude Lux edition launched.

How Does the Jeep Cherokee Compare to the Competition?

The Jeep Cherokee is a good SUV since it offers a nice interior, good off-road capabilities for its size, as well as decent long-term reliability ratings.

The Jeep Compass is a smaller SUV offered by Jeep which costs about $1,000 less. Where the Jeep Compass stands out is that it’s easier to park in crowded cities with small parking spaces, while the Jeep Cherokee is much better off-road. We recommend the Jeep Cherokee since there are fewer complaints from owners.

The Toyota Highlander is a slightly larger SUV which costs about $7,000 more. Technology is better in the Toyota Highlander, while the Jeep Cherokee’s 4WD system works better off-road. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since they last longer, although both SUVs are worth taking a look at.

Jeep Cherokee- great SUV!
I have had no issues with this car at all. It drives great and is extremely comfortable! My favorite features are the touch screen system, heated seats and steering wheel, and Bluetooth. There are a few very minor things I dislike. First, are the non automatic seats, but I know they do make some with that feature. Next, the ac/heat vent in the back seat is too small for the area, I would prefer the vents be on the ceiling. Also, the front and back seat air settings are not separate from the front. Last, the care takes a little bit too much time to speed up from a stop. But again all of these things are very minor, overall I love this car!

Love this car! Would suggest for high mileage driving.
Love how it drives. I wish it had apple car play though. In a little over 2 years I have put 35k miles on it and have only had to have scheduled maintenance and one battery change. I would really suggest this car for anyone wanting a new crossover type vehicle.

It is quite when I drive and mostly smooth on different train.
It always feels like something is moving underneath when I go over bumps. The window when rocks hit it crack very easy. Comfort could be better and cleaning also could be better and easier to do.More color options available that you do not have to pay extra.

I have had zero problems with my 2018 jeep Cherokee limited. I have had it for almost 3 years now and absolutely love it. I love the compact size of it yet still enough room for 5 people and some storage space in the back. I would definitely recommend purchasing a jeep Cherokee.

Beautiful car/lots of trunk space!
We love our jeep Cherokee! Pros/favorites: rear camera, comfy leather seats, being able to start the car with your key, lots of trunk space, good speaker quality, drives smoothly, overall great performance! Cons/problems: the back seats have very little foot space and the middle seat in the back is quite narrow.

I love the smooth drive, I love the way that it looks, I am a huge fan of the type of SUV it is. I am still trying to figure out the dial that is in my vehicle but other than that I really like it, it is big enough for my family. If I had to change one thing about my vehicle it would be the color.

Great SUV but missing a few options that were not available for this model.
I love my jeep but it is missing server all things. I have the top of the line the altitude and it does not have apple carplay. Also the passenger front seat is not electronic as the drivers side. You must adjust it manually. That is the only 2 issues I have with my jeep!

The gold accents on the interior make it seem sleek and classy.
I absolutely love my jeep Cherokee! I purchased it with the intent of it being a great family vehicle, and it has exceeded all expectations. It drives so well and it is great on long trips. I wish the trunk was a tad bigger, but I would upgrade to the grand Cherokee if it became an issue in the future.

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk: excellent for off-roading.
This jeep Cherokee Trailhawk drives really well in all conditions. My husband and I do a lot of off-roading to climb in the mountains of Colorado and this, by far, is the best jeep we've had that can handle the clearance needed for the rough terrain. There's enough space in order to do some car camping. The electronic features and the touchscreen are great. The only problem (and this could be due just to this particular vehicle) is that, even after changing our air filter, every time we turn on the air, we get a musty smell.
accountCircle Maddie M on May 28, 2021
Poor air conditioning, but comfortable.
The air conditioning does not work well in summer. Also, the car has very low gas mileage, and I have to stop for gas almost twice a week. It does have a good screen setup and I haven't had a problem with the brakes. It has a steering wheel warmer which is nice.
accountCircle Ricky S on May 26, 2021
Good vehicle for the money.
The look of the vehicle is great, but the power of the engine is weak. The interior is good, but the screen is a little small and I regret not getting a 4 wheel drive. The interior is standard and did not disappoint, but the seats stain easily. All in all, it is a good vehicle for the money, but if I'd upgraded, I think I would have been happier.

Pros: very comfortable ride. Leather interior is easy to keep clean. Little road noise. Good stereo system. Easy controls (radio, heat/cool, Bluetooth phone). Backup camera is very convenient. Blind spot detection. Cons: terrible pick up. Transmission skips when pushing the gas pedal. Paint is chipping already. Gas mileage is sub par for an SUV.

I love my jeep. I downsized from driving a Buick enclave daily and the gas savings has been tremendous. The jeep has been great for hauling. We moved across the country last year and the jeep was packed! On the daily basis I have our two dogs in and out of the jeep with ease. Love the size of the vehicle for parking and pulling into the garage. It is not a small vehicle, but is smaller than the enclave by far. I bought my jeep new in may 2018 and we have never experienced a mechanical issue with it. 34,000 miles and doing great!

Jeep Cherokee is overall a comfortable and powerful vehicle.
I love the comfort of my jeep Cherokee. There is plenty of cargo space. The ride is very smooth and great power in the engine. However, the auto turn off feature when stopped causes your battery to have a short life span. My first battery only lasted a year. The second one just over a year.

Jeep Cherokee 2018 is a winner.
I have really enjoyed my Jeep Cherokee. It rides very smooth, and gets great gas mileage! The interior is very neat, and the touch screen is a great size. One thing I have found that I do not like is that the seats seem to be smaller than in other SUV/crossovers I have been in. I also wish that I would have gone for the v6 engine versus the v4. The v4 just does not have much get up and go. Besides that I think this car is great, and I would for sure purchase this car again in the future.

Lots of safety features. Auto high beam is an excellent feature. Car is fast.
Performance is excellent. No problems with the vehicle, as it is new. Highly recommend this vehicle because of all the safety features.

The jeep durability cannot be compare with any other brand. Great design.
Jeep SUVs are the best, they're very functional, with a lots of upgrades. Great features. The trunk spaces and the folded back seats make a big difference. It feels like a small SUV yet very spacious inside. Heat and ac work great and de defrost works almost instantly. I have had a jeep before and I will have another jeep after this one.

Whisper quiet engine. Love it.
Sunroof issues. At times my sunroof doesn't close all the way automatically. But sometimes it does. It is weird. Also sometimes my brakes squeak. But that is usually only when I first press the brakes. I am nitpicking here, but the arm rest sometimes does not separate when you lift it up. Does not show the correct compartments.

Very reliable and comfortable.
Very reliable and comfortable. Leather, heated seats with great Bluetooth accessible to phone. Touch screen and navigation system. Also, great mileage for a jeep. Four wheel drive with option of “sport” driving, changes drive for different weather conditions, including snow/sleet.

Love my 2018 Jeep Cherokee sport trailhawk.
I looked for over a year to find a vehicle, which was comfortable for me as I am disabled. I found my new 2018 Jeep Cherokee sport trailhawk. I absolutely love my car. The ride is outstanding & the look is great!! I have had over 5 people tell me that they are going to look at this vehicle and would buy one! I would recommend this vehicle to everyone! The comfort, space and ride is excellent!

Super comfortable and reliable vehicle.
Vehicle is comfortable, good size, has heated seats and different driving options for various terrains. Has backup camera and large display screen. Favorite features are the remote start, large sun and moon roof, exterior lights while turning, and parking assistance. Have had an issue with seeing a “service shifter” notification a couple of times, but it has not presented a problem and goes away after turning the car off.

The seats go back allowing for much extra storage, the navigation is amazing.
I love my jeep. It is family friendly with lots of space for our kids and animals. Live to take it camping and on road trips. It is extremely reliable and haven't had any issues thus far. I would recommended this for any large or small family. It is extremely equipped with every amenity you may need. I will continue to upgrade my jeep. Safety is a huge concern as well and it is extremely safe for the little ones and pets.

It gets surprisingly good gas mileage. It also has a lot of room
I like the sporty feel of the vehicle. I wish I had gotten a nav system and power lift gates

Awesome acceleration of the jeep Cherokee!
This car is a very reliable car. Since we have had it, the car has not had a single issue. In the past, we have had issues with the check engine light going on. The car accelerates fantastically, far better than the jeep compass in my opinion. The car is fairly comfortable as well and is spacious enough for all grocery needs.

Jeep Cherokee- the perfect sized SUV for family of 4.
I love my heel Cherokee. I drove it across country from Michigan to Nevada and it has been on many road trips since. Smooth drive, perfect amount of space for family, and just the right amount of trunk space for bulk shopping. The back seats fold all the way down too offering space to move most large furniture and long items purchased. Definitely one of the perfect sized SUV.

Proud owner of 2018 jeep Cherokee limited.
I love my jeep Cherokee. The only problem I have ever had with it was the fuel pump. It is very comfortable and reliable. I would definitely recommend this make and model to anyone. The leather seats are easy to keep clean. Overall, I just love everything about my jeep.

Pros and cons of the Jeep.
The first thing we noticed about this vehicle was that it ride rough. Also there is feature on this model that when you stop a light or stop sign the engine shuts off to save gas. It is annoying. I wish it was more roomy. It is good on gas, has Bluetooth, a good heater and ac.

Very comfortable and feel very safe in my jeep.
Very comfortable seating. Room for dog and all of our gear. Bought it for 4 wheel drive as it is much needed in our area. It performs very well in the snow and rain. Great gas mileage and very much enjoy long road trips due to the overall comfort and driving experience.

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, great midsize SUV.
This vehicle is stylish for a small to midsize SUV. It gets roughly 24 mpg. I had to pay extra to get the navigation but I think it was certainly worth adding on. I haven't had any problems with the vehicle at 70,000 miles. I would probably buy another one, it has been a good vehicle.

I do wish that there weren't so many recalls because overall it drives well.
It has many recalls, and some small issues with the shifter. I have had issues with getting my oil changed. I also wish that the car had more room in trunk. Other that it has been a good car for the price paid. It is a smooth ride and is pretty good on gas.

Off-road and capable vehicle.
Love comfort. Space is a little small. Do not like the ess feature. The power and tow capacity is good for this size SUV. The handling is very good and like the sport mode. Remote start is also a very good feature since it is cold in winter. Would like more free apps and features, like navigation.

2018 jeep Cherokee review.
I like my car overall but there are a few glitches that are frustrating. The engine turns itself off to save gas but it is very inconsistent and makes the car turn off. Also does not have great gas mileage it is fairly expensive to fill up my car. Overall I do enjoy my jeep.

Telling you about my trail hawk. It goes hard off-road.
It is a really good car I got it when I was 16 I am now 18. The car never had anything go wrong with other than the fuel pump going out and having to change the tires. It is a beast of a machine I’ll tell you that. I recommend getting one. For all you know it could be the best decision you could have made.
