Alex Showalter
Nov 29, 2023

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator lasts around 200,000 miles, with some average steering and check engine issues reported. At $31,700 to $41,850, it’s expensive, but worth the money if you’re in the market for a capable off-road focused truck.

likeFilled The Good
Off-road performance is better than other trucks, the passenger room is good in the back seats and the optional stereo system is great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine is not very strong, it has a bouncy suspension on the road and the steering feels slow.

Is the 2020 Jeep Gladiator a Good Used Truck?

Absolutely love my jeep gladiator!! Looks amazing, drives amazing, and is tons of fun for road trips! I love how the top and the doors come off. I did have to get some steps so I could get in. The sound system is the best I have ever heard in a vehicle! My favorite car!

The only truck I'll ever buy again!
Love my truck! It does it all and then some. Very versatile, smooth handling, great engine performance. Love the ability to take the top off. So many customization options it is insane! Whether you are planning on off roading, camping or just going to the beach, the gladiator will do it!

Great vehicle, questionable service.
Great, no problems. Very customizable, turns heads and gets me anywhere in style. I had to go great distance to find a decent service department. Most dealer service departments are to busy to help you and/or promise one think and do not care enough to follow through.

The value of a jeep is in the capability of where it can go.
The off-roading performance and capabilities are truly freeing and very important to the jeep name. Having a vehicle with such capability allows for transportation without worry. A capable vehicle is very important especially for those who like to “take the path less traveled.” comfort is good. Nice interior and good display. Not sure how it would hold up getting wet through.

Gladiator: the good the bad and the ugly.
The gladiator provides a smoother ride than a traditional wrangler. It has all the same off road capabilities and perks of a wrangler with the convenience of pick up bed. One problem I have had is that when removing the doors it does not always want to go into gear, I have had to the dealer multiple times with no luck in fixing so far. I also wish bigger tires came standard without paying for the rubicon since it is already at a higher price tag than my previous wranglers. Overall though I love the truck. I enjoy being able to remove the top and doors and still being able to travel with kayaks. I have also used it to pull a tow behind travel trailer over 700 miles with no issues other than gas mileage.

Gladiator the name fits the definition, worthy.
I love it no problems, excellent performance, reliable, comfortable, great features to personalize, max tow a must for some, truly a great jeep long time coming, price will adjust but worth it in my opinion, I bought one, and do love it, it is appeal and style says it all.

The ultimate versatile vehicle.
The new jeep gladiator is so incredibly versatile! There are so many combinations you can do for the ultimate ride depending on the weather, your destination, your mood, and or travel companions that day. It is both a truck and a jeep, so it is super fun! What more could you ask for? It is also plenty roomy inside to feel like a car as well. And there are endless possibilities for accessories to add on to really make it your own. Everyone loves a unique jeep!

Engine issues- Jeep support awful
We had two types of engine failure lights a half hour after buying this Jeep. Jeep Cares was awful. They would not buy it back, would not say why not or when they would. It was in different shops multiple times for weeks the first few months we had it. Unresolvable issues time after time and having to jump thru absurd hoops, and pretend fixes. We were paying insurance on an undrivable vehicle, while Jeep drug out the buy back for months, telling us to get an attorney, even though we met our state's lemon law. Then we got a different Jeep support person, and after about 6 months of unfixable engine issies, she started the buyback process. At 8,000 miles Electrical issues, die hard jeep fan but I had to have the factory steering box replaced as it was unsafe. AC comes on by itself when truck is turned on some times. Radio shorts out with a loud POP and resets to factory. Clock dosen't keep time. Dealership says no codes nothing they can ( will ) do. Radio numbers on volume screen are misinformed and distorted. Look at the Jeep gladiator forum. Many owners are in the same boat. I like the truck but if Jeep and the dealer keep ignoring and isolating owners, telling them basically to just deal with it, I will have to trade it in at a loss. Driver door has loud click poping sound from broken weld in the door, jeep wranglers and now gladiators have been getting this defect since 2018 and jeep has ignored owners and not fixed the defect. They will all eventually get the annoying sound. This truck depending how things turn out may just ruin Jeep for me. Which is heartbreaking...

The back is too small. But can still do everything a wrangler does
The vehicle looks nice but when trying to use the bed of the vehicle it falls short. You cannot pick up/buy and bring home any big item/furniture. I would just rather have a truck or a wrangler jeep not both. All in all I would not buy this vehicle again.

The roof is removable and it has a waterproof interior.
It is reliable and durable for off road and it is convenient with easy detachable parts and waterproof interior. It also is high for terrain and it can help with durability. The jeep is also a smooth ride when you are inside and it does not have problems and does not bump.

Jeep gladiator review 2020.
The gladiator is very high off the ground. The doors are also quite thin, therefore you can hear the wind when driving and makes it very loud. There is not a lot of space in the back seat. The car looks abnormal when you are used to a regular jeep wrangler.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Gladiator?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Jeep Gladiator shares a lot of strengths and weaknesses with the Jeep Wrangler, while getting good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Jeep Gladiator at 4/5, enjoying the spacious rear seats for a small truck, but doesn’t like that it only offers only one engine choice.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Gladiator a 4.6/5, praising the excellent off-road performance, but owners don’t like the relatively short bed.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Jeep Gladiator include wandering steering, check engine lights, along with window motor issues. Overall, these problems are similar to other trucks on the market, leading to average repair costs as the Gladiator ages.

Wandering steering is the most widespread complaint on the 2020 Gladiator, showing up at around 15,000 miles. The steering feels very floaty and imprecise, especially at highway speeds. There are steering box braces which improve the steering feel, and cost around $650 to install.

Check engine lights have also been reported by some Gladiator owners at around 25,000 miles. You will need to use an OBD-II scan tool to determine the source of the light. Once you know what caused the light to turn on, replacing parts costs around $50 to $350, depending on the source.

Window motor issues are another problem found on the Gladiator at roughly 20,000 miles. The window motors simply fail as the vehicle gets older, and have to be replaced. Changing out the motors costs around $500, depending on local labor rates.

There are six recalls on the 2020 Jeep Gladiator, which is worse than some other trucks from the same year. The most serious recall covers the rear driveshaft, which can fracture. Jeep will replace the driveshaft for free on affected models. Other recalls cover the clutch pressure plate, rearview camera, and seat belt retractors. Jeep will fix those issues for free as well.

How Long Will the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Gladiator can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Tacoma. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than average, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $585 per year.

As a used 2020 Gladiator reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the wheel hub for $350, parking brake shoes costing $400, along with the radiator hose which costs around $500.

So far no problems. Very reliable. It can be driven 2 wheel Dr as well 4 wheel Dr. It has sirius radio installed.

accountCircle Courtney M

Only had a couple a couple of weeks but oh yes reliable I have not had any problems at all I would expect not to

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is fairly basic, and includes a 5-inch central display. Optional upgrades include larger 7-inch or 8.4-inch touch screens with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is worse than some competitors, and only offers a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Forward collision warning
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking

Is the 2020 Jeep Gladiator a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator is a good value if you’re in the market for a unique pickup truck with decent off-road performance. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $31,700 to $41,850, making it more than a Chevy Colorado or Nissan Frontier. When new, the price range was $33,545 to $43,875. Depreciation is similar to other trucks, losing about 3% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Jeep Gladiator?

The standard engine is a 3.6L V6 Pentastar which delivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Both configurations have a combined fuel economy of 19 MPG. With this engine, the Gladiator can go from 0 to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds. The maximum tow rating with the 3.6L V6 is up to 7,650 lbs., making it quite capable for various towing needs.

What Colors Does the Jeep Gladiator Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Gladiator?

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator stands out for its combination of off-road prowess and everyday driving comfort. It is recognized for its comfortable and roomy seating, particularly beneficial in snowy conditions due to its 11 inches of ground clearance and four-wheel drive with aggressive all-terrain tires. The vehicle has been designed to offer a better ride quality than its predecessors, with a dedicated body and chassis that improve upon the Wrangler. The Gladiator’s extended wheelbase and width provide additional shoulder room, while taller tire sidewalls enhance suspension compliance over bumps, contributing to a smoother ride.

However, comfort levels may vary depending on the environment. For those living in rural areas with challenging terrain, the Gladiator may provide a comfortable driving experience. In contrast, for those who spend significant time driving on highways, the Gladiator’s ride might feel less refined, and there may be better options available for highway commuting.

As a family vehicle, the Gladiator offers a spacious cabin that can accommodate up to five people, making it suitable for family adventures. It also offers the unique feature of a removable roof, adding to the enjoyment during favorable weather. Nonetheless, the ride can be a bit bumpy, which might be fun for younger passengers but less so for adults, especially on longer trips.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Gladiator Have?

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator offers a versatile storage configuration suitable for various needs. It can comfortably seat five passengers and provides 35.5 cubic feet of cargo space in its 5-foot bed. Notably, an extender system can add another 4.5 feet of usable length with the tailgate down, accommodating longer items. This bed size is enough to fit a queen-sized mattress using well-placed ratchet straps, two full-size dirt bikes with dedicated space for them indicated by molded treads in the bed liner, and a significant amount of camping gear, although larger items like a fridge/freezer may need to be placed in the back seat.

Furthermore, the Gladiator’s interior also offers additional storage solutions. The rear seats can fold forward and flat, doubling as a shelf for extra cargo. The seat bottoms flip up to reveal lockable storage compartments, ideal for smaller items such as tools or tow hitches. These storage areas are especially valuable in a convertible pickup to keep valuables secure.

For larger cargo, the Gladiator’s pickup bed can accommodate items such as couches and bed frames, with the Trail Rail system enhancing the range of possibilities for securing various loads. Overall, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator combines open bed space with clever interior storage options to suit a wide range of hauling needs.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Jeep Gladiator was introduced for the 2020 model year as a small truck built on the Jeep Wrangler platform.

2020: First model year for the Jeep Gladiator with all new styling, and a practical bed.

2021: New diesel-powered V6 engine offered.

2022: Sport model now has a standard 7-inch touchscreen, all other models have a standard 8.4-inch screen along with an Alpine audio system.

2023: Freedom Edition package introduced with better off-road performance, more standard features offered.

How Does the Jeep Gladiator Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator is a decent compact truck, offering a practical cabin and great off-road capabilities, but the driving experience may be too extreme for some buyers.

The Toyota Tacoma is another small truck which costs around $3,500 less. Standard safety features are better in the Toyota Tacoma, while the Jeep Gladiator offers more passenger room in the rear seats. We recommend the Toyota Tacoma since it’s the longest lasting small truck on the market.

The Jeep Wrangler is a small SUV built by Jeep, which costs about $1,500 less. Both the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator are built on the same platform and share a lot of features. The Jeep Wrangler is better off-road, while the Jeep Gladiator is more practical. The two Jeeps are very similar and ultimately the decision comes down to which you prefer.

Mr.
I have 26,000 miles. My truck has been very reliable. The only issue I've had is the 'famous' rear window leak with the hard top. The jeep dealer replaced the rear window, which corrected the problem. No mechanical issues to date. I do follow the recommended service intervals outlined in owners manual. I really like the Blind Side feature. Has saved me 2 times so far. I also like the backup sensors feature. As for road noise, It's a Jeep. However, I did add the Headliner after the fact. That has cut down on road noise about 3 - 4 decibels. In the summer, seems to make a difference on keeping inside vehicle cooler and warmer during the winter - go figure. I would recommend all 3 of these options if you are considering a new Gladiator. You will be happy you did. They are worth the $$$. I've taken trips from Florida to North Carolina, Virginia and up to Maine. Handling has been good on the Highway as well as off road in Pisgah, Cherokee and Shenandoah National forest as well as Baxter State Park in Maine. MPG has been averaging +-26 MPG on the road at 70 MPH. I'm a happy camper so far.

Love having the only open-air truck on the market! It is so easy to remove the top and I bought a $20 electric screwdriver to make it even easier. Only wish the 3rd piece of the top was easier to take off by 1 person. It is not too heavy, just a bit cumbersome.

Great car, drives great on the highway. Has plenty of space in the bed and the back seats which makes it comfortable for all passengers. The roof and doors are removable, which makes this a great summer weather truck. Handles very well, easy to maintain. Everything in the truck is waterproof, so you do not have to worry about unforeseen rain storms coming at you.

Good car, not for short people.
I like the car overall. I have got a few issues with it but overall I’d give it a five out of five. The step to get into the car is too high in my opinion. I am five feet four inches and it is a bit hard to get into the car for me. The fact that the cars engine turns off to conserve energy at every stop also can be quite annoying sometimes, but I am learning to adjust. The steering functions are flawless though and it is a great all terrain vehicle, which is exactly what I needed it for.

Not the best driving vehicle, gas mileage not so good... Love the truck and accessories added on... Jeep is not the most comfortable seating for road trips. I have not encountered any problems with my jeep gladiator, it is everything I expected. The towing ability is reliable and strong, we have towed trailers and also pulled down trees after a hurricane. It is nice and drives great but. I am in love with my new truck.
Seat adjustment and leg room has been a problem for someone larger like myself. The noise inside the car at high speeds can be quite a lot due to the carbon fiber body work. The power of the engine feel quite good it has a solid acceleration response and handles well. Backup camera is crystal clear and works great. The headlights are fantastic and I can see clearly at night. Heating and ac works great really pumps out a lot of air and functions perfectly but I have noticed the heater getting hotter while revving the engine harder like going onto the highway. Doors have been a little harder to close then I am used to. Indicators do not always click to let you there on so it is either a good or bad thing depending if you like the noise or not. Sound system is good but kind of has a center point that is a little behind the driver so it is not centered to your hearing and it sounds like it is behind you. Biggest problem is the seat adjustment being able to go further back would be nice but more so being able to tilt the seat base so the aft end is lower than the front end would be great. Currently feels like sitting in a stool with a backrest it forces you to sit more upright and it has resulted in some back pains.

Jeep hybrid: the gladiator.
The jeep gladiator is the best of two worlds. The soft top is easy to open and makes it a topless jeep. The bed is a five foot pickup truck that easily holds a couch, bike or kayak. It has all the features of a jeep wrangler with the addition of a cargo bed! The stow feature under the second row of seats is a plus. There have been minor electrical issues with the screens and a jeep recall but other than that the vehicle has been solid and reliable.

Best of both worlds - jeep and truck bed. Rubicon is the way to go - the sport is too narrow looking. Amazing sound system. Definitely want to get the bed lined so you do not get rust from scratches. It is very comfortable even though the seats have no automatic features. It does have a screen dash for radio and all. It hooks to Bluetooth but I do not have CarPlay.

Fire cracker red. Gets it noticed.
Comes with heated seats and steering wheel. Auto start., 4 wheel off road traction control and rock climbing feature. My driveway is a mile long. I do not have to plow when it snows. This jeep goes right through. The bed is great for caring feed, lumber and whatever else you might. Automatic or standard shift. Great gas mileage.. Plus all of the touch screen stuff. I add a winch and changed to a more aggressive tire for traction. Have yet to use some of the features. I really love it.

Fun truck and great on gas. Very easy to take off doors and roof!
I love the jeep gladiator, the convenience of being able to take the doors off and roof off in the summer makes it very enjoyable. Very good on gas and has done extremely well in the snow so far. This is a fun truck, I will end up buying it after the lease is up. The size is perfect, interior is awesome and the sound system is also fantastic. The truck bed is a bit small but that is okay as I really do not use it that often. Overall I love the jeep gladiator and how fun this truck is.

Having both a jeep and a truck in one is nice. Great for camping.
Have had issues with a few things. First the latches that hold the soft top on at the window are weak and the roof tries to peel off at highway speeds or when an 18 wheeler passes. Second the leather wrapped under the steering wheel has come loose from the stitching. However these are easy fixes under a hundred dollars each. The jeep is everything I expected it to be.

Gladiator makes great family truck.
It rides very well, I average 50-60 on the highway, the cab holds me and my family with lots of extra space, have not figured out how to pop the roof and doors yet ? But am expecting it to be fairly difficult, all and all rides well, comfortable, though one thing I am not a fan of is the buttons to roll down the windows are in the middle, not on the door. I recommend it, for sure!

I love the jeep gladiator because it goes off roads and it is very high-quality.
My vehicle is great I love it. Now you see the jeep gladiator is my favorite car that I have ever had. Now it comes with a lot of pros and cons. One of the cons of the jeep gladiator is that it is brand new 2020 the jeep gladiator was professionally made in the USA.

The only truck I'll ever buy again!
Love my truck! It does it all and then some. Very versatile, smooth handling, great engine performance. Love the ability to take the top off. So many customization options it is insane! Whether you are planning on off roading, camping or just going to the beach, the gladiator will do it!

Jeep gladiator: the best of both a jeep and truck in one fun package.
The jeep gladiator provides you with the best of both worlds. The utility of a truck along with the new features of jeep that everyone wants. It is easy to drive. The ride is improved over a wrangler since it has the wider wheel base, which is a concern for most people.

Jeep gladiator is awesome.
The steering has a serious issue that needs to be fixed. The headlights are really dim and had to be upgraded right from the start. The look of the gladiator is awesome especially when the top can come off on a warm day. For the prize you would expect some of the features to be more upscale.

Gladiator, the greatest jeep.
I have no problems with my new gladiator. The performance of the vehicle is superb. The greatest part is having the pickup bed. No more dirt in your car. The interior is great. Like and other luxury SUV. Drives great. Does not bounce like the wranglers.

Great car all year round.
I really like the jeep gladiator. I have been looking for a car for a while and couldn't decide between it jeep or a pickup truck. When I saw the release of the gladiator I knew I would be buying myself one. It is a comfortable ride and great choice of you are looking for either a jeep or pickup.

Jeep gladiator review 2020.
The gladiator is very high off the ground. The doors are also quite thin, therefore you can hear the wind when driving and makes it very loud. There is not a lot of space in the back seat. The car looks abnormal when you are used to a regular jeep wrangler.

The perks of owning a jeep gladiator.
The gas mileage is great in the gladiator. It is extremely capable on off road trail rides. The gladiator is a beautiful vehicle and gets compliments constantly. As a part of the jeep family, everyone driving a jeep waves, or stops to look and talk about the gladiator when it is noticed.

The perfection of the jeep gladiator.
This vehicle is perfect in every way. Five stars across the board. The ride is comfortable, the driving is responsive. Freedom top is good and the tonno cover it come with comes in handy. Fuel economy is better than expected. Seats are comfortable and interior storage is good.

Very user friendly and multi-functional vehicle.
The jeep gladiator sport edition comes with an excellent tow package and I love how that makes it possible for me to tow a trailer for work and a tow a camping trailer as well. The ride is extremely smooth and comfortable and the vehicle can take on so much terrain so easily! It also has a truck bed, so that makes it really easy to take gear when I go camping. It also has a soft top, so it easily converts to a convertible and can convert back quickly if it starts to rain. The jeep gladiator is very user friendly! The only problem I have found is that sometimes the Bluetooth fails to pick up calls so there is no sound at times.

It is all you want in a jeep but with a bed and able to pull!
It handles a lot better than older jeep models. It is everything you want in jeep but with a bed to put things in. The storage in the cab is amazing and allows you to take the doors off and have secure spaces. The custom ability is all there just like the wrangler and makes it amazing to make it your own.

Upgrade your pickup truck to a jeep gladiator.. You will not regret it!
I just leased a new 2020 jeep gladiator 4 days ago. So far no problems or any discomfort. Vehicle comes fully loaded. Has seat warmers and also a steering wheel heater. Many may say the vehicle appears too long but when driving the vehicle you do not feel any difference compared to driving the jeep wrangler 2 or 4 door. If you are an active person you likes to surf, snowboard, or own any jet skis or ATVs this vehicle is perfect to place your equipment in the back bed. I have been dreaming of getting this vehicle since I first saw it came out in 2019. Best way to start the new year!

Loving my new jeep gladiator!
So far, so good! Love the gladiator. I didn't grow up a 'jeep person' and I must say this is my favorite vehicle. Love that I have the normal features of a regular jeep, but the added truck bed for running errands, etc. Definitely recommend this vehicle for the adventurer!

It’s a....good... Jeep
I’m at the 4000 mile mark on my JT Rubicon and for the most part I love it, came from a 2014 JK Rubicon and I only have praise for the new suspension set up. Off-roading, flexing, 4x4, lockers are exceptional especially the on dash info screen. I have done light towing with it and it does leave much to be desired from engine torque, the time it takes to stop and the sag the Rubicon gets from loading a trailer on it. I know that has to do with the upgraded off-roading suspension and I don’t mind as I don’t tow much anyways. City driving is where I start to have complaints. The shifting is so rough, sometimes going from park to drive leaves a less than desirable clunk and if you catch the transmission off guard and accelerate without warning it doesn’t like you for it, I have had issues with it staying in a gear even into the red zone for no reason until I slow down significantly. The shifting problem goes for 4x4 also, I don’t know if that’s just how a “Jeep truck” that may be geared for longer lower gears operates. I have done some digging and checking on my own and others have the same issue with a finicky transmission. As far as I can tell it’s not anything wrong with the Jeep itself just Gladiators in general. Overall great Jeep, great off-roading, transmission needs a second look.

No Regrets!
Very Pleased. Took delivery November 2019, currently have 7500 miles. No Issues or Problems encountered. It took about a month to get used to the Stop/Start function but now love it. All vehicles moving forward will have this feature. The blindside assist is very helpful. Recommend this option as well. I have the Sport S model with Limited Slip Rear axle and factory off road tires. Very good traction on our farms in Eastern and Western Tenn as well as Gainesville, Fl. Averaging 26.9 MPG on highway between Florida and Tennessee running 72 MPH on Cruise. Averaging +- 23/24 MPG around NE Florida in mixed traffic. Very Pleased with this vehicle. No Regrets.

Air conditioner not functioning.
Amazing vehicle! Stylish, comfortable, and wonderful features. However, most recently, there have been issues with the ac unit. After researching, it appears other gladiator owners have had similar issues. Currently waiting for recall. This isn't the best of the circumstance when you have small children in this 90+degree heat.

Great vehicle, questionable service.
Great, no problems. Very customizable, turns heads and gets me anywhere in style. I had to go great distance to find a decent service department. Most dealer service departments are to busy to help you and/or promise one think and do not care enough to follow through.
