2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review: A Dependable Year For The Comfortable Midsize Off-Roader

Alex Showalter
Jul 12, 2022

The 2007 Grand Cherokee lasts around 200,000 miles with some computer and throttle body issues. At $5,837 to $16,275, it’s a decent value for a strong, well-made SUV.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The off-road performance is great, the largest V8 engine has more power than other SUVs, and the seats are comfortable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There’s no third row option available, the suspension is very bouncy on the roads and it’s expensive to run.

Is the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Used SUV?

  • Yes, 2007 is a good year for the Grand Cherokee. Owner reviews praise the room, off-road performance, and smooth suspension.
  • Interior materials are nicer than many other SUVs, with higher quality leather and dash trim options than SUVs in the same price range.
  • Reliability ratings are average. Models from 2007-2010 are decent choices, with a lot more issues on 2011
  • Performance is average from the V6, but the V8s offer significantly more power.
  • The Grand Cherokee is reasonably safe, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is below average, getting up to 17 MPG combined.

I love my wheels for my car it is great in any type of weather it treats me good.
My car is runs really smoothly I take it to and from California often and it is amazing my miles are kind of high but it still runs like a champ the only thing that is wrong with it is that it sucks on gas I have to fill up pretty often other than that there's nothing to complain about I love my car.
accountCircle Holly B
It has an awesome speaker system.
The windshield wipers have to be replaced quite frequently. It drives very smoothly. It has great miles on it. You have to get an oil change quite often. Gas miles are great. I have some complaints regarding tire pressure. I have to get it changed a good bit. I love my jeep and would not trade it for the world.

It's a really convenient truck.
I like my vehicle. It feels great when driving it. Also great during winter season. I don't have trouble driving on the snow.

That it is a very reliable vehicle.
The year is a little old, but it's a very reliable vehicle. It's all wheel-drive. The gas mileage is only 18 miles a gallon.

The jeep grand Cherokee is a great all-terrain vehicle.
I really like the performance of the jeep grand Cherokee. I feel like I can take it anywhere and in any kind of weather. The features that I love are the heated leather seats, auto start, Boston sound system, sunroof, and traction control. It is able to pull our boat with ease. It has not really had any big problems, mainly just maintenance.

I absolutely love the power of the hemi engine.
The performance of my Jeep grand Cherokee is excellent! I have only had to perform routine maintenance thus far. The only thing I had to replace mechanically was the starter since purchase.

Jeep Grand Cherokee, Old.
It's old so the battery doesn't work as well. The lights inside the car turn off and the air conditioning will also occasionally turn off and turn back on. Other than that, the car is in great shape. If you take care of it there's no need to buy a new one.

Jeep Cherokee is a great vehicle
I love my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I keep up with regular maintenance and have had very few problems. I installed a new aftermarket radio that hooks up to my phone, other than that-it's perfect. It's been in a minor accident (fender bender) and I still feel safe and secure in my Jeep. It really is a nice vehicle.

Good when it works but have been met with many unexpected & expensive issue.
I have had this car for 5 years and have had to do so much maintenance it is ridiculous. I have had to replace the transmission control module, starter, 2 new batteries, motor in the back windshield wiper. Tons of money spent on this car. When it works it is fine but basically a money pit.

The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't all that Grand.
My vehicle has been an ok car. I love having 4WD and a 5.7L Hemi is cool and all but I get horrible gas mileage (about 11 -13.5 miles per gallon) and the overall performance of my car is rather dull l, but can get up to speed pretty quickly and can go off-roading. The sensors for tire pressure have never worked properly so it will say 1 tire is completely flat and the light on the dash and sound will go on but then return back to what it was before and goes back and forth. There is many options you can play with like having your windshield wiper blades turn on at the sense of any rain on the windshield. My personal favorite is the headlight brights will turn off when detecting another cars lights across from it so no having to keep turning them off and on myself. There is also a digital amount of miles you can go before reaching an empty tank, however I've run the jeep at the '0 miles til empty' warning for at least another 5-10, miles and have not ran out of gas, the whole time I've owned the car, actually. There's been many recalls for the vehicle and we have had major issues with needing a new alternator and electrical issues. I honestly would not recommend a jeep but it's definitely not the worst route to go buy means.
accountCircle Kelsey D
It is overall a dependable car, but not worth the poor gas mileage
Electrical problems (lights don't work, windows get stuck), reliable (hasn't ever broken down), poor gas mileage (16-17 MPG), overall Ok
accountCircle Alan K
It is a reliable vehicle and gets me where I need to go.
I like that the vehicle runs and gets me where I need to go. I don't like that it has rust and rattles but I do like that it gets okay gas mileage and can pull my boat.

It is pretty reliable and gets me to where I need to go safely.
Like the amount of space it is good for long rides. Hate how much gas it takes and a lot of its parts are quite expensive.
accountCircle Megan W
Do not get if you have a rear facing car seat.
The backseat is small. We have a rear facing car seat and have to have the passenger seat almost all the way forward. It does really awesome with towing and in the snow though. Plan to turn it into a hunting ride when we upgrade.
accountCircle Lauren K
Jeep is pretty good but could use a lot of improvements.
Overall it is a great vehicle. It could be roomier but it is not made for more than 4 people even though it is a 5 seater. The ac in the back could be a lot cooler. The back area is pretty nice. Easily can store luggage. The acceleration though is not all that great. It takes some time for it to get going.

What Do Critics Say About the Grand Cherokee?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2007 Grand Cherokee is an improvement from earlier years, and gets average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Grand Cherokee a 3.8/5 liking the off-road capabilities, but disliking the bouncy suspension on-road.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Grand Cherokee 4.2/5, liking the interior materials, and disliking the poor fuel economy.

What Common Problems Does the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

The most common problems on the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee include stalling engines, failure to start, and issues changing gears.

The engine stalling is the most common complaint at around 80,000 miles. The source of the problem is usually caused by a throttle-body, or spark plug issue. Replacing the throttle body is about $800, and a set of spark plugs is roughly $400.

Failing to start is another frequent problem mentioned by owners at roughly 85,000 miles. The computer causes the problem most of the time, and it costs nearly $1,200 to replace.

Shifting poorly between gears is another issue at roughly 90,000 miles. The transmission computer usually is the source of the problem, and replacing it costs roughly $450.

There are 7 recalls, with the most serious covering the transmission shifting out of park and into neutral, leading to a rollaway situation.

How Long Will the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Last?

A properly maintained 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee will last around 200,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles less than top competitors like the Toyota 4Runner. Regular annual maintenance costs are a bit higher than other midsize SUVs at $434 per year, according to Repair Pal.

Most 2007 Grand Cherokee models will have over 100,000 miles,, so buyers should be prepared to replace the timing chain tensioner for $1,500, purge valve which costs $125, and the intake manifold gasket costing $650.

accountCircle Brianna S

It is very reliable. We haven't had a single problem out of it since we got it except for your normal wear and tear stuff that you have to keep up.

accountCircle Julia K

Yes it is very reliable. I have no complaints. My leather is starting to tear, but the car is also over ten years old. I expect to get another few years out of it.

accountCircle Alison B

It is very reliable. I have not had any problems with it so far. I do my scheduled oil changes regularly and a tune up once every few years.

accountCircle Laura B

The only problem I've had is the starter going out twice. It is also not very efficient when it comes to gas.

accountCircle Haley H

Yes. It has been reliable. I haven't had too many repairs. But, the parts are expensive. Parts can be a thousand

accountCircle Jane G

It’s very reliable. We have to fill one tire regularly, but I think it was an error on the part of the mechanic that replaced the tires last.

accountCircle Lori H

It has been fairly reliable however there was an ignition switch recall and I've had starter issues (with the starter cable connection) and have been stranded at several gas stations due to the car not starting

accountCircle Liz O

I have had a few electrical issues with it starting and reading transmission over temp when it had been sitting for awhile. This is supposedly a common issue and Jeep should've issued a recall on it with as many people I have heard with the same issue.

How Much Is the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Worth?

Blue book values range from $5,837 to $16,275, making the Grand Cherokee around $1,000 less than a Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander. When new, the price range was $28,115 to $43,140. Depreciation is a bit worse than average, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Grand Cherokee?

How Does the Grand Cherokee Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota 4Runner is a competitor which costs about $3,000 more. Performance is stronger with the V8 engines in the Grand Cherokee, but the 4Runner is better off-road. We recommend the 4Runner since they last longer and are more affordable to own.

The Ford Explorer is another rival, which costs about $500 less. Passenger room is better in the Explorer, but there are fewer complaints on the Grand Cherokee. We recommend the Grand Cherokee since they are a more reliable choice.

Plenty of power. Good towing capability. Plenty of comfort room. Have done a lot of maintenance including Ball joint and upper control arms. Unsatisfied with the instrument Controls “ the lights burn out and you can’t see the functions at night, I haven’t found a repair for this yet “ but over all I am very happy with My Jeep. BIG TONY the mechanic
I love my jeep very reliable I've had no issues on anything the only majore issue I've had to fix was my front drive shaft I was abled to fix that no problem I'm a mechanic so I do all my work by myself. The only issue or complaint I have is the oil and gas mileage as I take longer trips. They designed these jeeps to burn oil so that they are better on gas mileage keep in mind the other thing is keeping up with the general maintenance on your jeep helps out a lot.

I love the design of this vehicle, the leather seating is wonderful and all the added features of comfort make it a nice and cozy ride, things like heated seats, sunroof, rear back wipers and back up sensors, cruise control, radio controls on the steering wheel, radio functions, and all the details for vehicle maintenance. I love the automatic start feature. I however do find that while all these electrical features are fun and comfortable, having it all connected can be an issue if something malfunctions.

His mechanical experience evolved from modifying off-road trucks as a teen to focusing on automotive electrical systems as he got older. He now specializes in reviewing used cars as an automotive journalist. Some of his favorite brands are Toyota and BMW. The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of his favorite vehicles of all time since they’re built to last forever and can go anywhere. One of his current cars is a Lexus LX570, built on the same platform as the 200-series Land Cruiser, but it’s a better value in the used market.
