2006 Jeep Liberty Review: Among The Worst Years For The Compact SUV

Alex Showalter
Jul 5, 2022

The 2006 Liberty lasts only around 150,000 miles with engine failures and A/C system issues. At $4,878 to $8,181, it’s way too expensive given the number of problems.

likeFilled The Good
The stereo system is easy to use, off-road performance is above average and the ride height is good.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The fuel economy is terrible, there are a lot of mechanical issues, and the base interior is low quality.

Is the 2006 Jeep Liberty a Good Used SUV?

  • No, 2006 is a bad year. Owner reviews complain about mechanical issues, cramped cabin, and a bad interior.
  • Reliability ratings are terrible. Models from 2009 and newer offer better reliability than the older ones.
  • Performance is average from the V6 engine, but it’s a bit weaker than  its rivals.
  • The Liberty is reasonably safe, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is bad, only getting up to 17 MPG combined.

I love this car.The size is perfect for towing behind the RV.The gas mileage is almost 20 miles to a gallon. The only dislike l have about this car is there are no cup holders in the back seat and window controls are on the center console.
The power that this car has is amazing.Since it is a small car people think it has no towing power. But,we have towed the pontoon boat and the trailer with it.

Great family car that we have enjoyed for more than 10 years.
Love my Jeep. It's our fifth Jeep. Had them more than 20 years. Very low maintenance. Gas mileage is very good. Only major thing I would change is the upholstery. It stained very badly even with water. We couldn't clean it and had to use seat covers very early.

She is a beast and I will cry if I ever lose her. She may be small but she is amazing.
My poor truck already has almost 250,000. She has been through hell and back with me but I love her and I really can't afford or even have the credit for a new vehicle right now so I am praying she holds out for a super long time.

Since its a suv its roll over prone would be one of the most important things to know
First off i LOVE my Jeep it has been the most dependable vehicle i have owned next to my chevy blazer that is. However it is not without its own set of issues. Its had oil light issues which almost cost me my engine because the oil was 2 1/2 quarts low and the light didnt come on,its had issues with the roof leaking and the water ran down into my fuse box which caused all kinds of issues and its had security issues where it wouldn't start because the security wouldn't disengage. Otherwise it was worth the money paid .did i mention it has over 218,000 miles on it?

It is a great Jeep, good on gas just enough room for family of 3 also love it.
Love that it is small with sunroof. So much class. It is pretty good on gas and runs smooth. At this time I have not found anything I dislike. We have only had it about 45 days.

The Jeep Liberty is a cute, fun, reliable vehicle that will not let you down!
I love my Jeep Liberty because it is compact, cute, and fun! It has plenty of space in the back to accommodate small loads of groceries all the way up to a weekend away at the beach with the kids. It has 4-wheel drive, which has been wonderful for projects in the muddy yard, and enough power to tow a trailer. The gas mileage is decent, so no complaints there. It has great visibility all the way around, which is important to me. It is easy to get in and out of and provides a comfy ride. It is basic and reliable. I've owned it for 12 years and it's been good to me!

Its performance on and off the road is outstanding.
A very comfortable and fun auto to drive. Have had no major problems. Performs well on road and off. Could be better on mileage but other then that I am very pleased with vehicle.

It could be a very good older van, if you keep up the maintenance on it.

It's not the best but it gets me places
Needs a lot of repairs. I need to repair the back door, side, door, and there are some lights on the dashboard that won't shut off. It is not fuel efficient and I feel like I have to take it for repairs every few months or so. I also need to get an alignment down because it its type wobbly.

Jeep liberty not the vehicle choice for me.
Vehicle is too small for a family of four. The brakes have been replaced twice. The water pump is going out. It makes a loud popping sound when turning either direction. It has already had a part recall on the vehicle. Paint peels easily. I really do not like driving this vehicle at all.
accountCircle Ann S
Seems like older Jeeps have a lot of problems.
I have had to replace the window regulator motor over 8 times. I have experienced suspension problems. And I just spent $800 on new radiator.
accountCircle Erin R
It is very fast. I can get on the highway or interstate and really catch speed.
It is a nice car, but it rubs a lot and eats gas. I am at the gas station twice a week, or even three. When I turn, it sounds horrible. Even after I just had it fixed, it is still rubbing and locking up when I drive. And it has lots of miles on it.

A Noisy, Loud and Uncomfortable Car.
My vehicle is heavy, loud and uncomfortable. I had to change the engine last Jan. Each time I drive the vehicle, I'm afraid that something will happen. It's time to get something new!

Jeep liberty for easy to parallel park you can park in any parking lot.
I don't really like the jeep liberty's because I am going problems with the windows in the shocks in the raisable glass in the back of the jeep has been replaced many times and the CD player does not work only have an am FM radio no USB or aux hookup uses too much gas and problems with the jeep liberty leaking antifreeze does thanks what I like about the jeep liberty is that it is small I guess that is about it as far as the likes.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Liberty?

  • Consumer Reports says the Liberty is jittery to drive with very low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Liberty  a 3.8/5, liking the off-road capabilities, and disliking the rough driving experience.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Liberty 4.1/5 and enjoy the standard V6 engine, but dislike the lack of storage.

What Common Problems Does the 2006 Jeep Liberty Have?

The most common problems found on the 2006 Jeep Liberty include broken window regulators, engine failures, and air conditioning issues.

Broken window regulators are the most common problem showing up about every 55,000 miles. There is a poor design for the regulator, and it prevents the window from going up and down. New regulators are about $400 per window, and will break again due to the design flaw.

Engine failures show up on some Liberty models within the first 80,000 miles. The only solution when there’s a complete failure is to replace it with a new one, costing around $4,800.

Air conditioning system problems are another issue at around 65,000 miles. The compressor and blower both wear out quickly, and cost roughly $600 to replace.

There are 10 recalls, and many of them are serious including the engine wiring harness, steering ball joints, and the rear lower control arm, which can all increase the risk of an accident.

How Long Will the 2006 Jeep Liberty Last?

A properly maintained 2006 Liberty may last around 150,000 miles, which is half as long as top-rated competitors like the Honda CR-V. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than rivals, according to Repair Pal, at $440 per year.

Most 2006 Liberty models will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace items including the oil pan gasket for $500, transmission mounts, which cost $80 each, and the brake booster costing $200.

Fabric on seats spotted and stained first time moisture touched it. Unable to clean. Has needed seat covers most of time we've had it.

accountCircle Morgan N

Engine light remains on although there are no mechanical problems. I checked multiple car places and there is no problem with engine.

accountCircle Ryan S

So far mine has been very reliable. The only thing I see being a problem in the foreseeable future are the shocks. They are very stiff and seem to be making some weird noises.

accountCircle Brianna G

I believe it is pretty reliable. I have had some issues with it in the two years that I have had it but nothing to major or that costly to fix.

accountCircle Rosa V

It has not had any major problems, just the basics, brake replacement rotor and oil change fluid checks etc.

accountCircle Laura S

Some things have had to be replaced, but because of normal wear and tear not because of poor quality or workmanship.

accountCircle Denise H

Aside from the window problems, the jeep liberty sport is a reliable vehicle. And the upholstery stains easily, which is another problem.

accountCircle Nate F

In two years, had to replace radiator, water pump twice, three batteries. Other random issues too but.

How Much Is the 2006 Jeep Liberty Worth?

Blue book values range from $4,878 to $8,181, making the Liberty about $400 more than a Subaru Forester or Ford Escape. When new, the price range was $21,290 to $26,190. Depreciation is worse than rivals, losing roughly 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Jeep Liberty?

How Does the Jeep Liberty Compare to the Competition?

The Jeep Wrangler is another competitor from Jeep costing nearly $8,000 more. Off-road performance is much better in the Wrangler, but the interior of the Liberty is nicer. We recommend the Wrangler since they last longer and hold their value better.

The Toyota RAV4 is a rival that costs about $2,500 more. Reliability ratings and technology are better in the RAV4, but the Liberty has slightly more room. We recommend going with a RAV4 since they are more affordable to own and last longer.

Yes, it is very reliable. It is decent on gas mileage and gets me from point a to point b. It is a really good car in the winter because it has four wheel drive.

Yes, it is a good reliable vehicle, very spacious. Has a lot of room in the rear, not many mechanical issues but regular maintenance.

The 2006 jeep liberty sport is a vehicle that will last at least 10 years, but there are some problems, including falling windows. If you can fix the windows as they fall, it is a good vehicle.

Take care of it it will take care of you
We have a 2006 Jeep Liberty Limited. It has given us very few issues. Of course the well know issue with the windows. I replaced the ignition switch. The rest of the issues were regular maintenance items that wear out on any vehicle. We have changed the fluids religiously and it's still going strong. We have driven our liberty on several cross country road trips and it has never let us down. It currently has just over 230,000 miles. Whoever came up with life expectancy of 150,000 miles is a clown. You can keep your honda.

I have over 260,000 miles on my 4wd 2006 liberty. So I completely disagree that they only last 150,000 miles. I've changed the water pump and cooling reservoir. It's been treated rough. I pull a 24 foot camper with it 2 times a month, hunt fish and pull people out with it. It's not like a wrangler but it works.

Maneuverable, but with power.
I like the smaller size and maneuverability. I live rurally and many times need 4 wheel drive to even get out of my driveway. With this model I appreciate the dual rear door which allows me to open either the window only or the entire back door depending on my needs and the size load. I do have some difficulty with the size when passengers more around a lot as the car is not heavy enough to stay in place.
accountCircle Jordan S on March 30, 2021
Jeep liberty older models may be old but are still functional.
Only problems is my water pump needed to be fixed. Very reliable. Comfortable. Pretty spacious for a medium sized sport utilities car. Older features, but any update will be fine. Performs well. My 2WD does good in all conditions. No engine problems, no wiring issues. Perfect car for teens. Body upholds nice. Tires are good and have good traction. Since my car sits up so high the wind tends to have an impact on the steering a little bit. Headlights are super good even at low beam.

Never again will I buy another Jeep.
I love my car but will never purchase another Jeep. From the start there have been recall after recall. One recall was for new window motors however they changed the motor size which meant that I had to buy new windows for my car that fit the new motor. Recalled for axle issue as well as a recall because if I am rear ended the car might blow up b/c of where the gas tank is located - their solution to this - add a hitch to my car - which cannot tow anything. Also I live in a big city so trying to parallel park with a hitch on the back of my car - no thank you. There is a ghost in the machine so to speak meaning that the abs/esp lights are constantly on - even after spending hundreds of dollars trying to fix that issues. Now the front driver side window is acting up.

It's reliable and trouble-free.
I like that's it's been a reliable and safe vehicle for 12 years. Basic maintenance, few problems. I'd prefer a little better gas mileage but it isn't awful. Could be a little more comfortable, seat-wise. Great for hauling things like small furniture.
accountCircle Carl O on February 24, 2021
Attractive, comfortable, and spacious enough for nearly any job
The Jeep Liberty Renegade has been our reliable car since 2006, and it is still going strong in 2019! It looks nice, it's spacious inside (fits 4 adults comfortably, or 5 almost comfortably.) I've been in it for several long drives, and I've never felt cramped in there. My favorite part is that the back has ample storage space. I can do huge stock up grocery trips and all that food fits back there! Or I can fold down the rear seat and fit larger items, such as small furniture, a ladder, or long items like ladders or rugs. My only complaints about my Jeep Liberty are the gas tank recall (which they fixed by putting a trailer hitch on the Jeep), the motors in the windows failing (we had to replace all four window motors), and some faulty sensors (which caused one tire to go flat constantly in cold weather). But aside from these minor problems, I have been quite happy with my purchase, and I hope to get many more years out of my Jeep Liberty.
accountCircle Irene C on February 23, 2021
Great vehicle, just old age issues.
We love our vehicle, but wish it wasn't as old as it is. The only things wrong with it are issues like it leaks oil, the airbag light goes on, needs new tires, etc. I believe all the issues are because of old age not because of the make and model. Would definitely buy this car again, it is the perfect size for our family and the 4 wheel drive is necessary in the winter months.

Great vehicle overall w/ slight interior issue
I love my Jeep Liberty. I have had it for about 9 years now & it has had very few problems. I do regularly take it to the Jeep shop to get oil changes & get it checked on. It drives very well in harsh weather & in situations where I was forced to drive in off-road situations. My only issue with it is that the inside interior seems to have been made with cheap materials & it falls apart. The plastic that makes the inside of the doors & other parts of the car does not hold together well. But all-in-all I love my car & it has always performed well for me.

My title is: My Little Big Escalade
I've only had one recall on my truck in which the dealership fixed it. I really love driving my Jeep. It is a little SUV but handles like a car. It is really good on gas. It came with a 6 disc changer but unfortunately it gave out so I had to replace it with a after the radio. This automobile has been very reliable on getting me too and from work along with any errands that I have to run. It sits comfortably for me. I am short so this small SUV is perfect for me.

It has a bit of a rough ride. Otherwise it has been a good form of transportation.
The Jeep has a bit of a rough ride. Gas mileage is @15. Had problems with the power windows in the past.

I love my 4x4 SUV!!
I got ‘Jeepers’ in spring of ‘17 with 120,000 plus miles on her from a family that bought her brand new. They kept Up on all the maintenance, as have I. I’d never driven a Jeep before but fell in love quickly. The problems I’ve had are known. The back windows both motors broke, my husband installed wood so they won’t roll down anymore. Front driver side motor also broke but had that fixed, just under $400! The rear windshield wiper flew off and they no longer make the correct one for this model. Bought closest one and tied on with wire, fixed it! However the worst happened last winter when putting it in 4WD, BANG! She’s in shop now having a used Transfer Case put on as well as the right front wheel bearing thatwent out. So, $1600 later I’m still happy. I’ll have a 4WD SUV That still runs excellent.

I don't know what else to say
I don't have any problems with my 2006 Jeep liberty. I wish that I got better gas mileage tho. It is great in the winter, especially driving in central Pennsylvania. The steering is a little touchy, but I think that is the way jeeps are made. I love that I sit up higher off of the road, I feel safe in my Jeep.
