2011 Jeep Liberty Review: Unreliable Used SUV With Expensive Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Jan 13, 2023

The 2011 Jeep Liberty is a compact SUV that offers good off-road capabilities at an affordable price of $7,705 to $12,180. It has an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 18 MPG. However, a sluggish V6 engine and an outdated four-speed automatic transmission make it less than ideal for daily commuting compared to more modern choices.

likeFilled The Good
The 2011 Jeep Liberty offers decent off-road capabilities and a useful towing capacity. It is also an affordable option for those on a budget.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The Liberty has a sluggish V6 with poor fuel economy, an outdated four-speed automatic transmission, sloppy handling and subpar interior materials quality.

Is the 2011 Jeep Liberty a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall: 5/10 –  The 2011 Jeep Liberty is an option for those looking for an affordable off-road SUV. However, it has a lot of drawbacks compared to other SUVs from the same year as it’s aged.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo: 5/10 –  The interior of the Jeep Liberty is hard, cheap and drab. The cargo area is also on the small side, with a maximum capacity of 67 cubic feet, which may not meet the needs of some drivers.
  • Reliability: 6/10 – Reliability is questionable with some electrical and mechanical issues reported as its aged including engine failures.
  • Performance: 5/10 –  The Liberty is powered by a sluggish V6 engine with a poor fuel economy. The outdated four-speed automatic transmission makes it difficult to accelerate quickly, and the sloppy handling makes it hard to stay in control when cornering.
  • Safety: 6/10 –  The 2011 Liberty comes with standard safety features such as traction control, electronic stability control and several airbags. However, it lacks advanced active safety features.
  • Gas Mileage: 5/10 –  has an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 18 MPG, which is below average for a small SUV. This makes it expensive to run and may not be suitable for those who drive long distances.

Fun and comfortable to drive - nice look feels badass - perfect for New England
This is the first SUV style vehicle we purchased- we live in New England and it's great in the snow - it is roomy and comfortable- the liberty style is great because I feel there are no blind spots- I love the height because I feel I can see everything going on around me - I wish Jeep would bring this model back- I definitely intend on buying another Jeep in the future

Jeeps are very durable and dependable.
I've had a Jeep ever since I learned how to drive, I will never but another brand of vehicle. I've had no major problems. Because Jeeps are SUV the performance is impeccable during extreme weather. Reliability, comfort and features are amazing.

Jeep liberty: off-road ruggedness and durability; style and comfort from within.
I have had my Jeep for 7 years and it is still like brand new in the way it runs. Such a low maintenance and reliable vehicle and strong handling in the snow of the northeast. I don't like that it slides too easy in rain without 4 wheel drive on, but it does handle great once you turn on the 4 wheel drive.

The 2011 jeep liberty is larger and heavier than the same previous years.
My 2011 jeep liberty is slightly larger and heavier than other vehicles in the same class. Being a SUV makes me feel very safe when driving it. This particular vehicle drives very smoothly and is a very good ride. Changing the oil and filter on a regular basis and keeping the car clean will let the car operate properly for a good number of years.

Jeep liberty 2011, spacious very comfortable and very reliable.
I love my vehicle. There has been no problems, it is great for summer and winter. It includes 4 wheel drive and that is perfect for snow. The car itself is very durable. The car is very comfortable and has great features such as a sun roof. It also is great for camping. It is very spacious and the gasoline runs better than other cars who use up a lot.

2011 jeep liberty reviews.
I have not had any problems with my 2011 jeep liberty. The performance is great, I drive to work on the highway everyday and it has been great. I have never had any reliability issues. The leather seats are heated which make it great for winter time. Spacious back seat and trunk enough to fit a big grocery load even with other people in the car. My Bluetooth did not work when I bought it, and I have a hard time setting it up. I wish it had a sunroof but beggars can't be choosers.

Best SUV on the market. Jeep!
Has been an extremely reliable car, has never left me stranded, I have had no mechanical problems at all, very smooth riding, lots of power for a v6 and a pleasure to drive. Has four-wheel-drive which I do not use often but I am grateful to have. This is my third Jeep and I have had nothing but great luck with Jeeps.

Love my Jeep liberty! The jet model looks good and handles really well!
It comfortable and has a lot of great features. I do wish however that the back seat had a little more space. Cargo area is rather spacious. Since I have kept it pretty well maintained I haven't had any major mechanical issues. I did have the passenger side window motor go out on me after about 6 years.

Money Pit
Absolute nightmare. Purchased used with 150K. Within one year I have replaced the purge solenoid, water pump, radiator, electronic throttle body, exhaust manifold, tensioner assembly, serpentine belt and brakes. It still leaks transmission fluid, oil and coolant daily. Transmission slips, rough idle, embarrassingly loud, all without a single check engine light outside of the purge valve. I have owned this vehicle for 14 months and have already bought it twice -- and that's with me doing all of the repairs myself. Such a frustrating disappointment.

Jeep Liberty Renegade
Worst car I have ever purchased - once I reached 120K everything started breaking from which started with leaking transmission fuel, replaced water pump, new assembly, corroded transmission lines, and the final straw was actually a new transmission in a vehicle less than 5 years old - the under vehicle rust even after paying for rust protection, have put in 3 radiators, they also wanted almost $ 850. To replace the switch which is the warning light for my air bags, I had to replace the window buttons on driver side as the button actually broke, the rubber stripping on the doors is falling off - it basically has had more repairs in a fairly new vehicle then I would if the car was over 10 years old...never again would I purchase a Jeep....their service was also terrible...I paid for extra warranty that covered absolutely nothing that went wrong with my vehicle....piece of c**p actually.......

Good to tote behind an rv
I do not like the way it rides. After 3 hours most uncomfortable. Not enough feet room in the front passenger side. Easy to pull behind the rv Looks sharp. Would not purchase again. Did enjoy for short trips! Like the color red with the silver trim.

I like that it is an affordable Jeep with 4WD.
The air conditioner/ heat is useless. The switch for the driver's side window routinely breaks and is apparently very common.

2011 Jeep Liberty Jet Nightmare
I purchased a used 2011 Jeep Liberty Jet from Landmark Chrysler used with 59, 000 miles on it in the first 6 months my heater core went out the next year my thermostat has went out twice. My transmission went out and then my sun room stop working. Now my car has been leakibg for 5 going 6 years and they never fixed the problem. Now my car has been in the shop since the day after memorial day I was visiting my Grandfather, who was a veteran served his country when Jeep, started overheating. I got a lemon and when look at used do your home work it has cost me thousands of dollars.

That it is a piece of junk and to never buy a jeep liberty if you can avoid it.
I bought the jeep used and have had nothing but trouble with it. It has been in the repair shop requiring a new engine due to the timing chain breaking. I still have 31 more payments on it.

The four wheel drive in my car is well appreciated.
My vehicle burns gas very quickly and it costs a lot to fill it up. The comfort is very nice and I appreciate how big it is, it is very reliable however it has been having more problems with the battery. It has four wheel drive which is very convenient.

I am waiting for vehicle to be diagnosed before I say how I feel.
The engine is misfiring even after a replacement 5 months ago. Before the issue I was happy with jeep. I haven't had vehicle long enough to determine if I really a fan. I am looking at going back to the equinox. The equinox was good on gas and had towing capability.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Liberty?

Consumer Reports praised the 2011 Jeep Liberty for its off-road capabilities and useful towing capacity, but criticized it for its weak V6 engine, subpar interior materials, and dim headlights.

Edmunds considers the 2011 Jeep Liberty to be a good option for those who need an off-road vehicle with moderate towing capabilities.

Kelley Blue Book, says the Jeep Liberty is a great choice for off-road adventurers looking for an SUV that can handle some rugged terrain. However, it lacks in power and fuel economy due to its outdated engine and transmission.

What Common Problems Does the 2011 Jeep Liberty Have?

Electrical problems with the main computer called the totally integrated power module (TIPM) are very common. The computer regularly fails around 80,000 miles and is a common problem on all Jeep, Dodge, and Chrysler vehicles. Installing a new computer is about $1,000.

Engine failures are another issue reported by some owners at around 120,000 miles. The springs in the engine fail, causing piston #2 to destroy the entire engine. Replacing the motor costs over $5,000, depending on local labor rates.

Power window failures are another common and expensive problem on the 2011 Liberty at around 45,000 miles. The window motor and regulator both wear out and require replacement. Swapping them out costs around $700.

There are three recalls on the 2011 Jeep Liberty, including two for the air bags, and one for the steering column, all of which Jeep will replace for free.

How Long Will the 2011 Jeep Liberty Last?

The 2011 Jeep Liberty is not the most reliable SUV and can last anywhere from 8-10 years with proper maintenance. It is also capable of reaching up to 200,000 miles on the odometer, depending on its usage and how well it’s maintained.

accountCircle Tanner-Lindsey L

Yes, the jeep liberty is a reliable vehicle. I have had mine for 4 years and haven't had any problems with it so far.

accountCircle Grace R

The jeep liberty renegade is very reliable and has no problem. I rarely take my car to the mechanic. As long as you make sure you service it every three months as I do, you shouldn't have any issue.

accountCircle Lilia G

So far only had to change the breaks otherwise it has been very reliable. I haven't experience any other issues with this car so far.

accountCircle Carolina C

The only issues I have had with this vehicle were like a year ago, first the air-conditioning fan stop working, then the gas pump. I replaced both and it was very cheap.

accountCircle Zharria R

I have not had any problems with the model except some minor issues with the breaks. Overall it is a dream to drive and take care of.

accountCircle Anna P

I have not had any problems with it. I've had it almost 6 years and going on 80k miles on it. I love my Jeep.

accountCircle Nancy M

My heat went out and had to change blend door as well. I have a rattle in the rear but it is still a very reliable car.

accountCircle Kris S

No we have not had any problems with it so far it is very good car me and my husband share it I work days and he works nights

How Is the Technology?

The 2011 Jeep Liberty offers a wide range of technology features, such as keyless entry, cruise control, air-conditioning, a tilt-only steering wheel, and an optional touchscreen interface.

Despite these features being available, the optional touchscreen interface can be somewhat unintuitive for some buyers. Additionally, there is no built-in navigation system. As such, used car buyers today may find the technology in the 2011 Jeep Liberty to be lacking when compared to modern SUVs.

Is the 2011 Jeep Liberty a Good Value?

Used car buyers today may find the 2011 Jeep Liberty to be a reasonable option given its combination of affordability and off-road capabilities.  If you’re okay with higher maintenance costs as it ages, it could be a nice choice. Additionally, its off-road capabilities — especially in the Renegade trim level — make it an attractive option for those looking to tackle tougher terrain.

What Engines Come In the Jeep Liberty?

The 2011 Jeep Liberty is equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 210 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. This engine is available on all models with a four-speed automatic transmission.

What Colors Does the Jeep Liberty Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Liberty?

The 2011 Jeep Liberty has been described by previous owners as having an interior cabin that is utilitarian and far from luxurious. The angular and drab design of the cabin may not be pleasing to the eye, with some materials being quite basic.

Rear legroom and shoulder room are average, but the seat is quite flat and not particularly comfortable. Ultimately, while the interior of the 2011 Jeep Liberty may not be plush, it is reasonably functional.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Liberty Have?

The 2011 Jeep Liberty has a total storage capacity of up to 62.4 cubic feet. There are also several storage compartments throughout the cabin, including a covered center console with room for small items and a glove box for books or other items.

The rear cargo area features 60/40 split-folding rear bench seats. This is great for hauling larger items such as camping gear or luggage. Additionally, all trims come with a removable tailgate shelf and an adjustable cargo floor for extra storage capacity when needed.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

2008: Fully redesigned with improved on-road ride characteristics and more powerful engine options available.

2009: Improved handling and braking performance, upgraded interior materials in the Limited model.

2010: New off-road focused Renegade model offered.

2011: Improved steering wheel with audio controls, and stereo system upgrades.

2012: Final model year for the Jeep Liberty with Jet and Arctic special edition packages, available rear parking sensors.

How Does the Jeep Liberty Compare to the Competition?

When compared to other vehicles in its class such as the Ford Escape, Mazda Tribute and Honda CR-V, the 2011 Jeep Liberty offers similar power output but has a bit of an edge in off-road capabilities. The Liberty’s EPA estimated combined fuel economy of 18 MPG is worse than its competitors. The interior of the 2011 Jeep Liberty may not be as plush as other SUVs, but it is reasonably comfortable and provides a good amount of features and storage compartments. Lastly, regarding exterior styling, the Liberty offers a sportier look than its rivals – though this may not be to everyone’s taste. Overall, the Liberty is not the best choice for a used SUV, unless you are looking to go off-roading on a budget.

I love that my vehicle is well built and has leather interior.
My jeep is amazing, I love it, I have 3 small children and they all fit comfortably in the back. I was offered a wonderful warranty when I purchased my vehicle and I can honestly see keeping it until it crumbles into a pile of scrap. Reliable and comfortable. Its older so. It has some age related problems but my biggest issue is with the gas mileage. It is not environmentally friendly or cost effective. I like the optional four wheel. It works well for snowy and icy conditions. Overall a good car.

Roomy, good size, good for long drives, nice interior.
We have taken our liberty on many road trips, the liberty is very roomy for two adults, a toddler and two pups that always join us. The truck does burn a lot of gas, which is a huge con. The ac doesn't work very well in high heat 90 degrees or more. But overall it is a good car.

Pros of owning the jeep liberty.
This is my second jeep and I have always loved their product. My jeep rides very smooth which I love, gets decent gas mileage, and since it is a boxy shape it has great visibility. I also thoroughly enjoy that this vehicle is American made so when I need something fixed it can be done quickly instead of waiting for parts from another country. This vehicle is also sturdy and can withstand a few dents and dings.

I haven't really had any issues with the liberty. The interior is pretty spacious which is great for me, my girlfriend and our two large dogs. 2011 jeep liberty, black four wheel drive.
I love it. I have some tech issues when it starts at time. I had another tech issue with the airbags but that was due to who I bought the car off of. It is very comfortable to ride it. I drive a lot. I am not a fan of how the moisture gets into the windshield on the inside. It makes it difficult to see. And I also wish the dash was longer so I can travel easier at times.

High price (worth it) for adventures.
It is a great, spacious vehicle. Very comfortable to drive it, since it is a tall vehicle and allows you to see everything very well. It has a lot of space for traveling, or to be used in most situations. The mileage is not very good, at the end of the month the expenses on gas will be high depending on how much you drive; however it is still a wonderful car.

Gray jeep liberty, not 4wd.
My vehicle is a 2011 gray jeep liberty. It is not four wheel drive but still does decently when driving off road. My vehicle has held together pretty good over the past 3 years I have owned it. However, it is a jeep and jeeps are known for their low gas mileage. My car does fairly good on gas and I think it is worth the money I have to spend BC it is a good car. I love my jeep liberty. I have put 120,000+ miles in the 7 years that I have owned it - it is covered the majority of the east coast from Maine down to South Carolina. The jeep liberty is a lemon.
I have had to replace the engine, the motors that control the windows movements have been replaced in the drivers and passengers side which are expensive because it is the limited model. My jeep started out really good, it was bought used with 40000 miles. Had a rear axle bearing go out, got fixed. Then the transmission was starting to go out so that got replaced as well. Found out later the car had been in a flood and that is why the transmission had gone out. It has been a pretty solid car.

2011 jeep liberty, not the newest vehicles on the market but worth the buy!
The one thing I love about my vehicle is the huge sunroof that covers nearly the whole top of the truck. The touch screen radio and navigation system loaded with Bluetooth capabilities really comes in handy when taking long trips and allowing for hands free navigation. The interior is a beautiful tan color with silver trims and grey accents really give a beautiful touch to the black exterior. The digital dashboard also is very up to date showing tire pressure, miles, gears, and how many miles til empty. The trunk space may be my favorite because it is more than big enough to fit anything I have ever needed to transport including a huge coffee table and 2 end tables (the back seats let down as well).

2011 jeep liberty sport gone wrong.
I purchased a 2011 jeep liberty sport, barely any miles about two summers ago. 4 days after I bought this jeep from a known in town dealer the engine blew up on the highway. This story could be very long but all in all, the place forgot to change the oil and I drove without noticing the blinking * check engine light* and boom my car needs a whole need engine and fluid is everywhere. So I lose my car for about 5 months. So not off too the best start. Now I thought I loved the brand of the car, jeeps were in and I had wanted one for years. Saved up every penny I had as a child. I've had to change my tires twice, multiple flat tires, lights go out all the time, not as good in snow as you would think and probably one of the worst purchases my family has made. I am emotionally attached to this car as it has gotten me through a couple years off college and I have always kept it in good care. In the summertime, rarely any problems, but couldn't seem to hang in the winter months.

Sunroof leaked, many issues after 100k miles, comfortable for long trips, gas guzzler, air conditioning unit has issues, resistant to interior wear and tear, coolant level does not like to maintain level, burns oil, uconnect for Bluetooth is great, radio antenna has weak signal.

Perks of owning a jeep liberty.
I love that it is four wheel drive and it is reliable for me to drive in any weather the seasons in New York throws at me. It is everything I could dream about. I have had no problems other than room. I love the way it rides even though I said I would never own something rear wheel drive. But I absolutely do not regret buying my vehicle!!

I would not buy another one.
I enjoy driving it and I tow it behind my motorhome, however, I have had ongoing trouble with the air conditioning and heating system and the evaporative control system. Estimate to fix the ac/heating system is $500 and I do not have an estimate on the evap control system as I am afraid to ask. The check engine light stays and when I plug the code reader in it says gas cap, but I have replaced it twice and still have the problem, the heating system control is erratic, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. You can occasionally hear a very rapid clicking noise from under the dashboard and a mechanic told me it's a known problem, and the part is cheap but they have to disassemble the dashboard and the labor is expensive,

Great car, not for families with young kids.
The car is functional, can take a beating, and go the distance even with poor maintenance. Very good car to learn how to drive in, as it is small enough to feel comfortable in but not so small that going to a larger vehicle is difficult. The interior cabin is very small; it is not the best car for when you have small children as it will not comfortably seat front row passengers while there are car seats in the second row.

It's a great car To own for the price. And the gas mileage
I love the size and room it has inside. I love how spacious the back is with the back seats down. The gas mileage is decent. Lots of windows so no blind spots.

A great family vehicle very versatile.
Jeep liberty is a very reliable vehicle for long trips with family or just a good day trip alone. Jeep offers 4x4 low and high. Great traction control. Wheel sensors all notify main computer system when one may be low. Similar to the sportsmanship of the wrangler but a sturdy edition.

Things people do not think about when buying a car.
My liberty, is almost 10 years and the back rt tire abs sensor just went out. I have replaced nothing but tires over the years. Not only that but the turning ratio is awesome. I can turn this jeep around in the middle of a 2 way road and not even go off road.

Most reliable, cost effective vehicle I have purchased.
No problems. Have 65k miles. Largest purchase for car was new tires around 40k. Very reliable. Very efficient. Great fuel mileage. Big trunk space. Perfect for kids. Seats move easily to adjust space in vehicle. Plan on purchasing another Jeep when I need a new car.

My vehicle has become quite the money pit.
I love the size of my jeep. It is not to big, but not to small. Also, it runs smoothly for a jeep when it is working that is. However, in the space of 4 years I have had to replace the transmission, fuses, spark plugs, rotors, cylinder head and other minor parts. This does not include the electronic challenges I have had with the vehicle. Needless to say, as the second owner of the vehicle I never expected to have all those complications.

Most likely to never purchase Anthony jeep.
I bought my jeep liberty used so not sure if it's issues were from the previous owner but half of the radio screen went out, sunroof leaks, up and down switches for the windows pop off but I do love the heated seats and that its 4 wheel drive and it's very roomy.

Runs smooth very dependable vehicle.
The Jeep rides great in the mountain highways sharp turns. It rides very smoothly for a Jeep . . It has great power and speed. It accommodates 4 adults comfortably. With the seats down it can haul a very big load for moving. I would recommend this vehicle time and time again.

Nothing in my opinion I mean other than keeping my car clean that's about it
I like the size, and shape. And that it sits high so I can see well. I don't like the radio though. It only goes up to 37 on the volume and no higher than that I like my music loud

Love how reliable and safe it feels.
I love that this car is an SUV without being to large. It has plenty of space in the trunk, and the back seats can be put down for extra space. It rides very comfortably. The gas mileage is the biggest downside. I have personally had no issues with the car and would definitely recommend it.

Runs well. No engine problems so far.
Love it is up high. Is heavy weight for safety. Only sometimes windshield wiper goes on when making a right turn.

Powerful, reliable and beautiful.
I love it, is a powerful yet comfortable vehicle. This is my second Jeep, and I haven't regret my choice.

Dependable and very cost effective
I love my Jeep! She is very dependable and good on gas mileage. I have 4 children, 2 whom are 3 year old twins. Comfort with 2 car seats is enjoyable, not at all a tight fit.

2011 jeep liberty review in 2020.
Pro's- 4 wheel drive is excellent in winter driving. Back seat folds flat. My camping gear fits perfectly. Cons- due to discontinued status of the liberty, parts are getting scarce. The mode door actuator for air vent redirection has gone out twice and each time it gets changed out, the revision/ rebuild has caused nothing but problems. For example, no matter how hard mechanics try, getting heat on the drivers side floor does not work correctly. Air conditioner parts are problematic also.

It is meant to be driven on pavement AND dirt roads.
Nearing 100,000 miles and still runs like a beast. Gas mileage isn't great but you know that going into it. Has awesome power. AC recently went out from a cracked evaporator and driver side window has been losing power. Other than those few things, this vehicle has been extremely reliable.

My car is a heavy duty Jeep meant for off-roading and trips.
Breaks down all the time, engine light constantly on, gas mileage is terrible, rides very rough, not reliable for long trips, the air conditioning/ heat is constantly needing repairs.

2011 jeep liberty. Gets the job done.
The heat cuts on and off. It makes some screeching noises but other than that, not bad. The color is a beigish color which I do not love but it gets the job done. I wish there was a larger screen but I do not think that was a big thing at the time the car was made. Overall, it is a decent car and it works for what I need it to work for.

It has been very reliable for the seven years that I have had it.
It is a small SUV, just the right size for me. I have never had any problems with it. It drives very smoothly and quietly.
