Editor's Overview

Although it's wrapped in iconic Jeep styling cues from stem to stern, the 2014 Jeep Patriot is actually a very car-like prospect, with a modest off-road ability and one of the lowest sticker prices of any compact SUV. The Patriot has gotten better over the years, but it still can't keep pace with the newest offerings from Ford, Kia and Subaru.

CVT transmissions are horrible!

I have the latitude model, it has no extras. No bluetooth, not fuel mileage info, only power windows and remote start. No power seats either. This year and model has the CVT transmission in it. It does not have a fluid cooling fan. Anytime you are driving on the hwy for more than 50 miles and the outside temp is over 80, the transmission fluid overheats. You have to pull over and put the car in neutral a d wait for it to cool down. On several occasions this has happened to me, turns a 2 hr trip into a 5 or more hr trip. This is a dealer only transmission which means that you have to go to a jeep dealer to even check the fluid level. The dealer wants $300+ to service the transmission. This is the worst vehicle I have ever owned because of this ridiculous transmission.

Smaller than originally thought.

I have owned two Jeeps out of the three SUVs I have had. I loved my Jeep liberty. So I decided to buy another. My best friend got the 2013 Jeep patriot and I loved it. In 2014 I decided to get a new Jeep and got what I thought matched hers. The 2014 is shorter and has such a smaller feel. I truly can not wait to get rid of it, I will not any time soon because I keep cars for 10 years each time. I enjoyed the new SUV until I had to drive it long term for work and had my office on wheels. Much to small for what I needed it for. I also was not able to fit three car seats (two, no problem), I always had to take my friend's car if we had all three kids, not family friendly with little children, adults you will be squashed.

A lower priced SUV that leaves quite a bit to be desired. Wouldn't recommend.

The SUV is not the most comfortable to ride in very long. It rides pretty rough compared to other SUVs we've owned. It does not have the space we've had in other makes. I do like the 5 speed transmission. It seems to work well. The interior, while plain is easy to keep clean. The cargo area is much smaller than we've experienced with other makes. The mpg is much lower than we had expected. We’ve had the vehicle four years now and we've not had but one mechanical issue that was covered under warranty. The exterior has a lot of plastic that is starting to wear and peel. Very disappointed about that.

Safety Recalls (2)

Engine Nov 5, 2013
Report Receipt Date:
Nov 5, 2013
NHTSA Campaign:
13V552000
Summary:
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2013 Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200, and model year 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot vehicles equipped with 2.4L engines. Due to abrasive debris in the balance shaft bearings, these engines may have a loss of engine oil pressure, possibly resulting in an engine stall or engine failure.
Consequence:
If the engine stalls while driving it may increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy:
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine balance shaft module, free of charge. The recall began on December 24, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N52.
Air Bags Sep 14, 2016
Report Receipt Date:
Sep 14, 2016
NHTSA Campaign:
16V668000
Summary:
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot, Compass and Dodge Avenger vehicles. The Occupant Restraint Control (OCR) module may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying in the event of a crash.
Consequence:
If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.
Remedy:
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the OCR, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners that parts are not available yet were mailed on October 26, 2016. The recall began on August 15, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S61.
