Alex Showalter
Nov 3, 2022

The 2016 Jeep Patriot lasts around 200,000 miles with some electrical sensor and water leak issues. At $11,525 to $14,075, it’s cheaper than other compact SUVs making it a reasonable choice for shoppers on a budget.

likeFilled The Good
Seating is very comfortable in the front seats, the available 4WD system works well in the snow and there are no expensive problems reported.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine is noisier than other compact SUVs, there’s limited legroom in the back seats and crash tests are lower than many other compact SUVs.

Is the 2016 Jeep Patriot a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2016 is a good year for the Jeep Patriot, it’s just outdated, which gives it a lower overall rating. Owner reviews praise the smooth suspension, stereo system, as well as the 4WD system.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 6/10 – Interior material quality is worse than average, the seats are reasonably comfortable for long drives, however, cargo space is low.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no major mechanical problems reported with the 2016 Patriot. Avoid models from 20092013 since they have transmission problems. Models from 20142017 are all much more reliable.
  • Performance 5/10 – Performance is awful from both of the 4-cylinder engines, which are weaker than the competition.
  • Safety 6/10 – The 2016 Patriot is reasonably safe, earning an overall rating of 4-stars in government crash tests. There’s an optional rear view camera available. It’s also missing more advanced driver assistance features found in other compact SUVs from 2016.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 24 MPG giving 326 miles of range from the 13.6 gallon tank. Gas costs are $20 cheaper than average, at $209 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2016 Patriot is a cheap compact SUV with low ownership costs, which makes it a decent value for shoppers on a budget.

Very reliable, great look and plenty of horsepower.
It does have a loose sound underneath but that is all. Great smooth driving. No major problems. Very reliable. Live in AZ so battery life is not the best. Air conditioning is a must out here and have not had any problems with that and power is pretty strong.

2016 Jeep Patriot - good utility car for a decent price.
I like that it is a small car with good gas mileage but is larger than a sedan for the purpose of carrying supplies and passengers. It also has a more sporty look than sedans. The 4 wheel drive option is also nice when we're driving up steep terrain. One of the downfalls in my opinion would be the lack of a way to check transmission fluid. Other than that, I enjoy the car very much.

Why I enjoy my 2016 Jeep Patriot
I love how my 2016 Jeep Patriot feels when I am driving. The steering wheel is firm and steady. I enjoy switching from automatic to manual shifting. The vehicle is very roomy on the inside. Looking at it from the outside it does not look roomy. I enjoy listening to my Sirius Satellite radio. The back seats fold down to make extra storage room.

Much lower price than similar SUVs.
I like the sound system, wireless capabilities, interior layout & space. The only dislike would be I wish it had a little more gas mileage.

Does best as an around town car and small road trips.
Basic car, runs well. Comfortable seats and great a/c system. Sound system is one of the best ones out there.

It has plenty of space, Bluetooth connect, it is my dream car. A Jeep is something I have always wanted and it can go off roaring and get me to work.

5 star jeep baby. Superb fantastic suv.
This vehicle has a great ride considering that it is a Jeep. The space inside is very spacious for people to fit in 5 to 6 people. The back seats pull down so that you can Carry larger things in your vehicle. While driving The View within the windows Is really good.

It is a piece of poo-poo.
I don't like this vehicle because the dealership I bought it from pressured me into it. It's too small for my family and does not run very good. It frequently goes through gasoline very quickly and has a very strong gasoline smell when you start it up.

Do not buy Jeep Patriot too many problems.
Gas guzzler, always has recalls, makes noise every time I turn to the left, when it rains water goes in through back window even though it is been fixed 4 rimes.

My jeep patriot has overall been an unpleasant experience.
The quality of the vehicle has not lasted long, I have never completely felt safe in my jeep. It has very limited features. I am not able to see the miles I have left when my gas tank goes on. Overall, I am not happy with it even when I bought it brand new. I wish I was advised a different vehicle.

2016 jeep patriot is it right for you?
Is not very fuel efficient. Have to often fill up the tank. For such a new model it does not come with any features. The features that it does have is very basic and outdated for a 2016 model. The trunk space is very nice and spacious, the backseat is somewhat small but not too bad. The car is 4 cylinder so the acceleration is very slow. The car does not do good in the wind. It can very easily be blown and pushed on the road.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Patriot?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2016 Patriot isn’t as good as other compact SUVs, with lower than average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Patriot a 3.8/5 enjoying the comfortable seating throughout the cabin, but doesn’t like the weak engine choices.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Patriot at 4.2/5, praising the available 4WD system, but owners don’t like the lack of advanced safety features.

What Common Problems Does the 2016 Jeep Patriot Have?

Common problems found on the 2016 Jeep Patriot include water leaking into the cabin, a lack of power while driving, as well as excessive brake noise. Overall, these problems are similar to other compact SUVs, with average repair costs as well.

Water leaking into the cabin is a common complaint from owners in the first 10,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by worn out seals on the windows, doors, or sunroof. Replacing the seals is fortunately a fairly easy process, costing about $100 per seal, which needs to be changed.

A lack of power, while accelerating, is also mentioned by some owners at around 40,000 miles. There are known problems with the crankshaft position sensor, which causes the Patriot to have a loss of power. The crankshaft position sensor has been covered by a recall, with Jeep replacing it for free on affected models.

Excessive brake noise has been reported by Patriot owners in the first 15,000 miles. Brake noise usually means the pads are beginning to wear out, leading to metal-on-metal contact. Changing out the pads costs around $350. If there’s damage to your rotors, they are an additional $500 to $600, depending on local labor rates.

There’s only one recall on the 2016 Jeep Patriot, which is much better than many other compact SUVs on the market from the same year. It covers the crankshaft position sensor, which can lead to a loss of power. Jeep will change the sensors on affected models.

How Long Will the 2016 Jeep Patriot Last?

A well-maintained 2016 Jeep Patriot should last around 200,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than average as well, at $566 per year, according to data provided by Repair Pal.

Since many used 2016 Jeep Patriot models on the market have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the valve cover gasket for $140, door lock actuators costing $275, as well as the radiator hose, which costs $400.

I bought the car used over a year ago and have had no issues with it. As long as the driver does normal maintenance it will be a reliable jeep.

accountCircle Jodi S

Abs, wheel drive and traction lights have recently come on, and we have to wait to afford to take it to the dealership to have it checked out.

accountCircle Caprice R

I have had no major problems my car. It is a reliable car. When I first bought the car it had problems with it and it only had less than 4, 000 miles on it.

The jeep patriot is reliable so long as you take care of the expected maintenance on it. I have had no issues or problems with this vehicle.

accountCircle Jenny C

Yes it is very reliable. I have never had any major problems with this vehicle. I get it tuned up with an oil change and all that and I just keep the maintenance up on it and it runs like it's still brand new.

accountCircle irene h

accountCircle Katelyn r

accountCircle Darian A

It is never broken down on me. I have replaced the breaks, oil, battery, and I am about to need new tires but it is really all happened when I expected it to.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is outdated in the 2016 Jeep Patriot with an optional 6.5-inch screen available, which is still not up to date. Safety technology is worse than other compact SUVs as well. The only option is a rearview camera, which is less than the driver’s assistance features found on many competitors.

Is the 2016 Jeep Patriot a Good Value?

Yes, the 2016 Jeep Patriot is a good value since it’s cheaper than many other compact SUVs. Blue book prices range from $11,525 to $14,075, making it less expensive than a Honda CR-V or Subaru Forester. When new, the price range was $17,695 to $26,640. Depreciation is average, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Jeep Patriot?

What Colors Does the Jeep Patriot Come In?

Passenger room is good in the front seats, although the back seats are cramped for taller passengers due to the limited legroom.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Patriot Have?

Cargo space is worse than other compact SUVs with enough space for 4-6 suitcases behind the seats, and around 10 with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Jeep Patriot was launched in 2007, and was discontinued in 2017 due to declining sales and a reduction in models made by Jeep.

2011: Exterior styling changes added, upgraded suspension, standard cruise control.

2012: Available CVT transmission is quicker than older models.

2013: No major changes.

2014: Upgraded 6-speed automatic transmission, standard front airbags.

2015: Navigation system added to the Latitude model.

2016: Limited model removed from the lineup, optional rear view camera, standard Bluetooth.

2017: Final model year for the Jeep Patriot.

How Does the Jeep Patriot Compare to the Competition?

The Jeep Patriot ranks as an average compact SUV compared to other choices on the market. None of the problems found on the Patriot are expensive to fix, however, it’s a basic and out of date SUV.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is another SUV offered by Jeep which costs $7,000 more. Passenger room and off-road performance are better in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while ownership costs are lower in the Jeep Patriot. We recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee since it has more up-to-date technology for its age.

The Honda CR-V is a competitor which costs about $6,000 more. Technology is better in the Honda CR-V, while the Jeep Patriot handles off-road trails better with the optional 4WD system. We recommend the Honda CR-V since it has lower ownership costs and offers a more comfortable cabin.

My jeep patriot is a good ride.
My jeep patriot is a fine vehicle. It rides extremely well. It is abit loud when driving on new roads but handles well. I have the Sirius radio in it and it has a fine sound system. I would definitely purchase it again if given the opportunity to do so.

My smooth riding jeep! It tells how this car runs well, and has good power!
My vehicle has enough power to get me up and down the mountains where I live. Though it has 4 wheel drive, I do not go out in poor weather. The tires grip the road well and fog lights are awesome, when needed! This car is comfortable, reliable, and gets me where I need to be with little or no effort.

Smooth ride with soft comfortable seats when traveling short or long distances.
I how smooth it rides when driving and the seats are comfortable to sit long drives. I like how much room is in the back hatch and even more when laying down the seats. I dislike how there is not much room in the back seat. I dislike that it did not come with a USB to plug my phone in and had to get an adapter for it.

Jeep patriot has a sleek look for a sport vehicle.
Jeep patriot is pretty reliable, performs well for the most part. It is comfortable for a SUV, and rides pretty smoothly. Could use a bit more features for that year model, such as side mirrors indicators and power seats adjustments. It seems to have trouble issues. Tends to jerk while going uphill or taking off from. Stall position.

To light for a SUV. Not weather approved.
This vehicle meets my standards except it is lightweight and will spin very easily with rain or snow. It also hydroplanes very easily. I have had it since 2016 and it has not given me any trouble mechanically. I would like it more if it were a 4 wheel drive. That may keep it from hydroplaning as easy.

I bought my 2016 jeep patriot in 2016. To add electric features such as electric windows and locks would have been an $6000. I didn't know manual features were still an option in 2016. The car is decent. Does not take much to fill up on gas. Fairly decent on mileage. It is definitely not a sporty jeep.

Reliability and sustainability - a beautiful car.
The jeep patriot is reliable. As it ages, it needs work, but once that work is done - it is like brand new. We've had to replace the brakes once in the four years we've owned it. The wheels have been replaced, but due to objects or road construction. We need to get a full diagnostic and we need to tune some things up. On the whole, it is been a reliable car for us. We've used it to drive to and from a suburb, for work, and for pleasure. We know we will have this car for years to come.
accountCircle Rebecca W on June 2, 2021
It is simple and reliable.
It has plenty of space. The jeep is lower than most suv crossover. Fits in compact parking spots. No performance issues so far. Cali had a emission recall but it has not changed the performance of the vehicle. I haven't had any issues. Basic features.

2016 jeep patriot - practical for students.
I love my jeep patriot. As a college student, the amount of space is perfect for moving between home and school. The ride can be bumpy, but that is expected of jeeps. It does not have the latest technology, so if that is what you are looking for, I would suggest a newer jeep model.
accountCircle Taylor F on May 30, 2021
Overall fine. Nothing impressive. A little costly for being so basic.
I got this car as I really wanted a jeep. However I have been overall not impressed. The Bluetooth is trash. There are no extra features. The radio is old school for being a newer car. The wheels creak all the time. I could've bought a Chevy with all the features at a lower price. I do like the trunk space especially when putting the back seats down.

Durable and comfortable vehicle.
It does not have a lot of ‘get up and go’ but it is great on gas mileage and comfortable for me and the kids. It is recently started randomly sputtering which has me worried. It only does it occasionally and started within the last year. It is super durable as I have taken it through pastures and really rotten roads.

2016 jeep patriot lover, keep it.
This car is absolutely incredible. Smoothest ride I have ever had, and in addition it is super reliable. Only issue I have run into is the tire sensor comes on when it is extremely hot out because the pressure expands, but it is a minor issue I move past. Also the gas mileage is not the greatest, but the car itself is a wonderful ride.

I really like the comfort of driving a bigger car. One of the underrated aspects of the jeep patriot is that I feel there is enough space to pack for road trips. The car is realizable, in 2+ years of ownership there has yet to be any major issues that have arrived. The car is comfortable and being able to start the car remotely allows for it to be heated up in winter by the time I leave for work.

The 4 cylinder is underpowered, but can keep up on the highway. And the s.U.V. Is noisy, even on paved roads, and not the most comfortable for long trips. All in all great around town and short drives good on gas, no problems have 28,000 mi not much for a 4 year old car. But looks good and a lot of room for a smaller car.

Jeep patriot-the best small SUV.
I love my jeep. I was upsizing from a small car and this was perfect! My only concern is it only holds 11 gallons of gas and I drive a lot so I have to fill up more often. But I do like the sporty feel. I have leather seats and plenty of storage room. It has a spacious back seat, great for my dog. I have put a lot of miles on my jeep in the past couple years and it has never given me any mechanical issues! Overall it is a cool, reliable, and flexible vehicle!

It is the best vehicle to own but it has Its flaws.
The jeep runs good and the a/c works perfect and the gas is great. The vehicle has a lot of space. And the mileage is amazing. The jeep tends to lose a little power going up hills but to fix it is turn off a/c and afterwards the jeep will run like new and one other thing is if you washing underneath the car it makes it run better.

The good and bad of the patriot.
Bad gas mileage and low power. You don't have the power to get up to speeds on the highway or to get yourself out of trouble. The mileage is terrible, 20 miles uses over a quarter of a tank. I am filling up more and more each time. Other than that it's great.

Most of the issues are what we can fix but we have noticed that the air conditioning does not work and that the breaks are very squeak. And every time the speed o meter says that we needs to change the oil and the that the gas lid is open when we got the oil changed and the gas lid is always closed.

I love my jeep, but I did have the alternator go up quickly after purchasing the car. It was not bought new or even used from a car dealership so it does not have to do with performance of the car. I love the features, the radio is touch screen and nice. The a/c is very powerful and heats up very quickly. It also has good pick up for a jeep vehicle. The automatic headlight option is cool.
The power of the 2.4 liter combined with the 6 speed automatic transmission gives this vehicle an abundance of power whenever you need it. The heated seats come in very handy on cold winter days. The air conditioner works wonderfully. The vehicle is good on gas. It is been dependable since day one. The parts are very easy to get and are relatively cheap. Regular maintenance is inexpensive. I have replaced the tires once in four years. Also, there has not been many recalls on the vehicle.

Jeep patriot would recommend.
Inside is very comfortable. Roomy. It gets great gas mileage. Drives like a car and yet I can still haul a dirt bike with it. Rides very well. Is missing some of the need and whistles of some other similar type vehicle and that is ok with me. Have had no mechanical issues.

White exterior with black leather interior with 4 cars.
Problems with tires and transmission. Great sound system, heated seats, and remote start. Black leather interior and white exterior with 4 cars and a spacious trunk. Bluetooth audio is included as well. There is also heated seats in the front and air conditioning included with the car.

Having car problems already.
I had my car for 4 years and it is already giving some problems. It shakes when I drive fast. The brakes are not sensitive. It has a rattling noise when I drive it. Other than that, I like the exterior of the car. It has comfortable seats and it is spacious enough for my family. It needs upgrading for the radio and does not have a touch in screen.

I love my Jeep, you will too.
My Jeep patriot is amazing. This vehicle has everything I want including heated seats, a/c, comfortable ride and plenty of room for everyone. I have had no significant issues other than a flat tire and a broken window. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Reliable 2016 jeep patriot.
Great reliability. Has sunroof, heated seats, leather seats, and Bluetooth. Has four wheel drive and runs smoothly. Would highly recommend to anyone. It does have low gas mileage, but only takes about twenty dollars to fill up the tank. I love my jeep patriot.

Pretty good jeep for all seasons.
The jeep patriot rides very smooth. It is also has a very comfortable interior. The gas mileage is reasonable. And the electronics have been great. I do not have any real complaints. I drive very little. I also live in the city and the patriot is a good size for the city but I still use the 4 wheel drive when I go home to the mountains.

The Bluetooth feature has only worked one month out of the 2.5 years I owned the vehicle. I've taken it in to the dealership and they were never able to fix it. I bought the car brand new with only 3 miles on it.
The back seat is too small for my child's car seat so my front passenger seat has to be all the way forward for my child's seat to fit. It's a very weak vehicle. It hydroplanes easily.

Love my black jeep. Would buy again
The jeep is the perfect size. Big enough to carry passengers and stuff from shopping. But not to big where its hard to park

Love my patriot! (though I do wish it had power windows).
Love the amount of space, there’s lots of room for people or big stuff which is great! I do dislike that my particular vehicle does not have a door alarm system or power windows but overall it is a great car! Not much get up and go but once you get it going it’ll keep cruising! Seats are very comfy!

The jeep patriot is a great car.
I haven’t had any issues with the car yet it is a great car it does it is job. I haven’t been to the shop besides having a flat tire. Now when it comes to comfort I would say I would rather the seats be a little more comfortable I have arthritis so comfort is important to me.

My Jeep doesn't have a charging port
My vehicle is the best, it blue the size of the car is nice, and affordable. It holds gas for along time and keeps its mileage. It's a five seater and cotton material in side. The radio is Bluetooth and has a great model for the front of the car. The only thing I don't like it doesn't have a charging port.

It is a really great value for the money I spend on it.
I love that it is an SUV but it is still compact. It is easy and fun to drive. I really wish it had a larger gas tank though.

Good trunk space, needs more seat space.
The car has good trunk space, and runs nicely. My one complaint is there is not much seating space, it is very cramped inside the car. The turn radius also seems to be pretty large to me, which makes it hard to get through some spaces. Overall it is a good car, but could have more space in general.

Loud cabin, not 4x4, low to the ground.
The cabin is a little bit loud and noisy. I got the base model so its got no power anything, it's manual everything besides the transmission. It's a reliable jeep so far. It sits pretty low to the ground so you don't have very much ground clearance at all.
