2011 Jeep Wrangler Review: Expensive Long-Lasting Off-Road SUV

Alex Showalter
Mar 23, 2022

The 2011 Wrangler can last over 300,000 miles despite some suspension and electrical issues. For buyers looking for a capable off-roader it’s worth the money at $17,193 – 22,905.

likeFilled The Good
Off-road performance is outstanding, they hold their value well long-term and the exterior styling is appealing.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The cabin is very noisy, the ride is harsh on the streets and the engine is weaker than rivals.

Is the 2011 Jeep Wrangler a Good Used SUV?

  • Yes, 2011 is a good year. Owners praise the off-road capabilities, open cabin with removable doors, and fun driving experience.
  • Reliability ratings are good. Wranglers from 2009-2011 are all good and avoid the 2012  models which have electrical issues.
  • Performance is weak from the single V6 engine offered.
  • The Wrangler is not a safe SUV, only getting three out of five stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is poor at only 17 mpg combined.

For everyone that complains about gas mileage. If you bought a Jeep for mileage, you bought the wrong vehicle. Live my Jeep. My wife and I have done Backcountry in many different states. Jeeps are awesome for adventure if you use them right

The joys of owning a jeep.
My jeep has always been very reliable. It has about 80,000 miles on it and basic service has kept it running like new. It is perfect for quick trips around town as well as the occasional joy ride in the outdoors! I love being able to take the doors and roof panels off. They are very easy to remove and store.

Customization and being high off the ground.
I like the customizable aspects of the vehicle. I take my roof off, doors off, and can change the look of it just by getting a tire cover. After getting this I will never drive a car low to the ground again. I would recommend a jeep to anyone I speak with.

The look of this Jeep is classic.
This Jeep is so much fun to drive. The suspension on it make it feel like it's floating. All of the controls are right at your fingertips and very easy to maneuver. Does not have great gas mileage though, it does however have amazing air condition and the heat is great too.

Very sturdy, low maintenance and large enough for big puppies.
It is 4 wheel drive. It is big enough and sturdy enough for transporting my large puppy. It is not that comfortable for long drives.

I can't say enough good things about my jeep. It is reliable, fun to drive, and easy on the eye. The wrangler is easy to handle and easy to drive anywhere. I would recommend buying a jeep to anyone. You can even take the doors and top off so it is perfect for summer

Jeep wrangler - great for winter!
It is very reliable and has decent power for what it is. I am happy with the off-road performance and also the highway mpg. Overall it is a great vehicle, especially if you live in the north where it snows. In the winter it is nice knowing I have a vehicle that will not get stuck easily.

Jeep Wrangler 2 door sport V6 4 wheel drive 18 inch rims
No problems good on gas mileage, performance is outstanding. Jeeps are reliable on and off road with the most comfort and awesome legroom for tall people. Features are big tires, 4 inch lift, all doors come off, soft top and 4x4 drive. Mileage reads 62,670. The color Royal blue was the only year '2011' Jeep Wrangler where painted.

I bought the jeep used with no background history, but it is been a decent car.
It is a very durable vehicle and does great off road, but I believe the previous owner didn't keep up with maintenance. I have had various mechanical problems since I bought it, to include the engine and exhaust. At least once a month I am doing mechanical work on it.

It is burnt orange in color. I dislike the color but it turns heads.
I have a 2011 Jeep wrangler four door. It has a hard top on with but can take the T-tops off during the pretty sunny weather. It is orange with black cloth interior. I dislike the color of it. I guess you would say it is the basic edition because it does not have any extra.

My jeep has two light bars on the front with a front bumper and 38 inch tires.
My jeep has many transmission and engine problems. The engine was recently fully replace. Granted my jeep is decked out with very large tires and light bars. When you step on the gas you feel the car almost glitch. It is fairly annoying and my and my family wish it would just run smoothly. We love taking the doors and roof off tho.

It is fun to drive in the summer.
The engine light is always on. It is fun in the summer. The radio quit on me. Wheel shakes quite a bit.

They are fun to drive, but very costly.
Older wranglers tend to have a lot of problems. I've only had it almost 2 years, and replaced the battery, brakes, calipers, gas tank, and some tires. If you have bigger tires, it's a gas guzzler. It is a fun and cool looking car though. You can customize it in many different ways, and do fun things like off road on the beach. It can also be a bumpy ride, but fun at the same time. They are quite expensive all around, so you need to save money for it, and absolutely get an extended warranty!

Problems with a wrangler.
My wrangler leaks water every time it rains! The tires are to big and makes the ride very bumpy. The jeep tends to get a lot of problems. It is expensive for gas and is horrible on gas mileage. Very small inside not a family vehicle it is better for a fun time not an everyday thing.
accountCircle Brandon W
It is small and turns very well.
Subwoofer broke, it is design does not look as good as the old wranglers, it breaks often and so do other people's.
accountCircle Sophia B
My jeep is reliable, fits my whole family very comfortably, and is good on gas.
Cons- slow, leaks oil, slow acceleration, no backup camera or GPS, pros- very reliable, safe, comfortable, easy to take roof off, very strong skeleton( someone rear bumped me and I got zero dents), fits 5 people comfortably, has lots of trunk space, great on gas.

What Do Critics Say About the Wrangler?

  • Consumer Reports likes the updated safety gear and technology, and it has above average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Wrangler a 4.1/5 liking the great off-road capability, but finds the engine very weak.
  • Kelly Blue Book users rate the Wrangler 4.5/5 and enjoy how the Wrangler holds value, but find the fuel economy to be awful.

What Common Problems Does the 2011 Jeep Wrangler Have?

Problems with the Wrangler are moderately serious including suspension issues, radio failures, and computer problems.

Suspension issues leading to the notorious “death wobble” are common, showing up at around 40,000 miles. The problem is caused by steering damper and suspension components wearing out. Replacing the parts costs about $450.

Radio system failures are another frequent complaint from owners at around 50,000 miles. The stereo system just wears out in some vehicles over time, and has to be replaced costing about $400.

Computer problems with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) show up at around 80,000 miles, but are not as widespread as on other Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge vehicles. The TIPM controls every aspect of the vehicle and the only way to fix it is replacing the unit for about $1,000.

There are 11 recalls with the most serious being for the axle which can cause an accident in a failure. The other recalls primarily cover airbags and are not as serious once replaced.

How Long Will the 2011 Jeep Wrangler Last?

A well-maintained 2011 Wrangler will last around 300,000 miles, similar to other off-road SUVs including the 4Runner. Regular annual maintenance costs are very high at $758 per year, according to Repair Pal.

As a Wrangler reaches 100,000 miles, owners should prepare to replace the PCV valve for $150, window regulators costing $300 and the fuel tank which costs around $1,000.

accountCircle Katelyn T

It is very reliable. The only problems I have had are normal wear and tear. The wheel speed sensors became bad making my abs work wrong but that has been fixed with no other issues.

accountCircle Stefanie T

No it has just always had the regular maintain since even so far. I have modified it some so it has needed a few extra things.

accountCircle Madison H

Yes, it is a reliable vehicle despite any weather conditions. Whether you have a soft top or hard top, the driver or passenger door may leak water to the floorboards. That is my only negative comment about my jeep wrangler.

accountCircle Dylan L

Yes, for the most part. The one I have is not as reliable as my last one though because it used to be a beach car and the bottom is very rusty now, which causes problems.

accountCircle Kenzie S

The 2011 jeep wrangler sport is pretty reliable. I have had a few issues, like transmission and an airbag light, but both were fixable.

accountCircle Debbie M

It did have transmission problems at 110,000 miles and I had to put a new transmission in. Other than that no problems. I keep the maintenance up on my jeep to avoid problems.

accountCircle Alice S

So reliable knock on wood never had a problem. Its built to last and if taken care of it will last a lifetime

accountCircle Carmen C

I have not had any issues with it being reliable. Always starts right up and gets me to where I need to be. The check engine light comes on sometimes and the air conditioning doesn't always work but that’s about it.

How Much is the 2011 Jeep Wrangler Worth?

Blue book values range from $17,193 – 22,905 making the Wrangler more expensive than other SUVs including the Grand Cherokee and Highlander. When new, the price range was $22,045 to $33,320. Depreciation is better than average, losing 2% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Wrangler?

The 2011 Wrangler is available in three main models. Trims offer solid off-road capability and add-on packages with removable tops. Technology is good with a new Uconnect infotainment system added for 2011, with the next update coming in 2014.

What Engines Come in the Wrangler?

The Wrangler has a weak 3.8L V6 engine making only 202 horsepower. Performance is poor, taking nearly 10 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour.

What Colors Does the Wrangler Come In?

How Big is the Wrangler?

The Wrangler is available in both two-door and four-door models and is smaller than other SUVs including the Pilot and 4Runner. Passenger room is cramped throughout the cabin with limited room for adults in the backseats, even with the four-door model.

Cargo space is very small with only 12 cu. ft. of room behind the seats in the two door and 31.5 in the four door. The room expands to 55 to 70.6 cu. ft. with the seats folded flat.

How Does the Wrangler Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a highly-rated off-roader costing about $8,000 more. The FJ Cruiser stands out with better reliability, but off-road performance is superior in the Wrangler. We recommend the FJ Cruiser if you want a longer lasting choice that holds value better.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a rival in the same price range. The Grand Cherokee comes out ahead with more passenger room and luxury, but the Wrangler is better off road. We recommend the Wrangler here since there are fewer problems.

Always buy purchase before 36k warranty runs out but not when you buy the Jeep ! I was hit by a heard of dear driving 70 mph and hit me so hard the flew over the top of my Jeep and landed on the other side of the road. The Ruby stayed straight and strong . I need2 new doors but I was safe my bags didn’t deploy though. Ruby didn’t tip shift or sway . Solid solid as a rock . Love my Boy ! I really enjoy my jeep. I haven’t had any issues with it besides after market lights. I love to take it off-roading and get it off the blacktop. It is very nice to have in the summer when you can take off the top. The top is a very easy removal along with the doors.

I love jeeps they are customizable - you really can't go wrong with one!
Problems with the stereo sometimes and it is not the most reliable as it is lifted and is top heavy. However, I really enjoy driving it and it's great for off roading - comfort is not what you look for when driving a jeep. It's a very bumpy ride but well worth it! You can customize your car with so many options, that's probably my favorite part!

Tire pressure warning issue.
No problems at all, very sturdy and reliable. The only issue that I have had is that when I purchased the vehicle I substituted larger tires off another vehicle in the lot. The car’s computer does not recognize those tires and the air pressure warning light and sound is always going off. It is extremely annoying and dangerous because now I am not aware when I really do have a low tire. Mechanics refused to disable the warnings because it is illegal to do so.

My vehicle is all-in-all very enjoyable and nice to own.
Overall, the jeep wrangler is a nice vehicle. It tends to use up gas pretty quickly, but it is smooth and enjoyable to ride. Soft-top jeeps are the way to go, in my opinion. It is also nice having the option to take the hood off. The seats are fairly comfortable. After owning it for nine years, I have noticed it losing its smoothness, but it is still functioning. I like the features within the interior (such as the auxiliary port) and thoroughly enjoy using them.

If the big one happens this vehicle will get me home to my family.
My jeep is a very fun vehicle, l love taking it off road to taking most of the air out of my tires and driving out on the dunes to rock stomping out in the Borrego desert to playing in the mud in the mountains. This part might be because of my age. Driving a jeep will wear you out, l feel every bump going down the freeway going across country and going off road. There were a few times that l pulled over and took a nap the last time I drove to Michigan. A little more leg room would be a little more desirable in the front and back seats. More towing capacity for the two doors. That is about all I can think of at the moment.

2-door wrangler Sahara with leather interior.
Super reliable, cold weather package is a must, dual top is great, I didn't lift mine but I have 26' tires on it and I probably should have put a better suspension system in, two toned leather interior is nice but shows every spill, I also have the 2-door and there is basically no storage so I would recommend a 4-door unless you are okay with minimal room.

The joys of having a jeep wrangler easily outweigh anything negative about them.
Absolutely love my jeep, it is for sure more of a weekend beach car then an everyday commute vehicle due to gas. Not the most comfy for long distance drives or being driven on the highway but that is as expected since they are not made for speed however it has brought a lot of joy to us and is fun when with friends to be able to take off the doors or roof and enjoy the fresh air and scenery.

2011 jeep jk wrangler amazing vehicle.
Love this vehicle, it has been reliable and can get through any terrain. The heater works really well in this cold northern winters. As for the comfort me and my girlfriend just went on a 500+mile trip and at no point where we complaining about being stuck in the vehicle. The gas mileage could be better but it is not the worst and the road noise is kind of loud but all in all this vehicle puts a huge smile on my face and I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

Wrangler fits all my needs, the gas mileage is low but it is a 6 cylinder SUV.
My 2011 jeep wrangler has been an extremely reliable vehicle for the last 8 years we have owned it. Performance-wise it meets all my expectations though the comfort and features leave a little to be desired. I wish there were a leather interior and the possibility of heated seats on older models but that is a small sacrifice for a very reliable vehicle.

Jeeps, are very reliable and efficient vehicles. They also hold their value extremely well. I have had my jeep for about 6 years now and it is fun to have. Fun to ride, and very durable!
I love driving this Jeep! It's lots of fun with the ability to remove some pieces, or all of the top. I like the height, turning ability (I have to make some tight 3 point turns), and durability. Only drawbacks would be that after taking off the doors a couple of times, the drivers side door tends to very slightly leak when it rains badly.

4 door Jeep is hard to get in and out of the back doors to narrow. Easy top to put on and take off. Not a smooth ride but lots of fun. New jeeps ride smoother than older jeeps. Back seats fold down for lots of storage. I usually throw my bike in the back to head out to the bike path.

I do not like the wobble in the steering. But overall I love my jeep. I wish the interior was more suitable for outdoor activities such as hard flooring instead of carpet. Also I would have rather have the latches on the hood a different type of material rather than rubber. Whenever I drive and go fast the hood seems like it is going to pop up.

Some issues are worth being a Jeep owner
I've always dreamed of having a Jeep but they're expensive so I opted for a used 2011. It still runs well and I haven't had too many issues so far. The issues I've had include the check engine light being on quite often from a misfire somewhere in the vehicle, the air conditioning leaking and not working, the soft top leaking when it rains on one side into the passenger window. It's comfortable and has regular features, nothing fancy since it's a 2011. It's always been reliable it always starts up and gets me where I need to be. I love that I can take the top off and it's been really great during the summer time.

I love my jeep! The only problem when it comes to jeep wranglers, is that these are meant for off-roading, so driving on the highway and interstate can be rough. Other than that I have had this vehicle for several years and have ran into little to no problems. Also, the gas mileage is really good considering it is a jeep!

My wrangler is great for family, fun, and work.
My wrangler fits easily in most parking spaces. It is so easy to manipulate in heavy traffic and compact enough that you do not feel like you are going to be sideswiped in narrow lanes. It is roomy enough that I can haul all my product to trade shows comfortably. I have been on many long trips and found it to be comfortable with plenty of leg room to stretch. The 4 door Sahara model is a very smooth ride for a jeep. Very roomy and decent amount of trunk space. Leather seats make it much nicer. Fun in the Sun with a Jeep
So far I have not had any issues with my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I am unfortunately having to buy new tires this year, which can be quite costly since I have a lift. I am getting between 17-19 miles per gallon. My Jeep has always been exceptionally reliable and I always know I can count on it. There are a billion aftermarket parts. I have a remote start installed, a nice 2 din touch screen stereo system, and a Bestop soft top. I highly recommend the Jeep Wrangler to anyone and everyone!

I am glad I purchased this vehicle because it really suits me.
The car is over all good. It is comfortable, has a good amount of space, but it does not drive the smoothest. You get used to it though. The features like being able to open up the car during the summer is really nice. The car is a bit pricier than I would want it to be but you get a lot.

You get good mileage to a gal. Of gas.
I love the sporty look. Along with the many things you can do and add to the vehicle. I also love the room!

It can be modified to anybody`s personal liking.
I have not had any problems with my vehicle. It gets me anywhere I need to go and is amazing in many weather conditions. If your enjoy modifying your vehicle then a jeep wrangler is definitely the way to go. I can see myself either buying another one or replacing the engine before I get a different type of vehicle.

Jeeps are great but be prepared to pay.
Gas mileage could be better. Needs upgrades to feel like you are not riding in a plastic car. Jeeps are great fun, but I am surprised by how much always needs to be fixed. It is not too expensive, but things just do not have a long life if driven often and far.

All black jeep wrangler, lifted with light bar.
I love my jeep! Cannot wait to get a newer year. I have mine lifted, it is amazing. The soft top is easy to let back. I haven't took the doors off yet, but it looks pretty easy! I feel like the gas mileage is just fine for me. I probably fill up once every 2 weeks.

Jeep wrangler rubicon review.
My car has been reliable with minimal issues since I purchased it over 8 years ago. I feel safe and the reliability is no joke. It can be difficult to get in due to the height of the seats, but there are multiple accessories available. The car can be customized to fit your unique personality. I feel confident driving on any road conditions. I have had two cars in my life and it would be hard to give this one up!

Weird things about the jeep wrangler.
Recently the brake pads were worn down. And when it rains heavy, the rain can come through the cracks on the roof where the removable panels come together. Also sometimes the steering wheel buttons stop working occasionally to change the radio and such and you have to honk the horn to reset them.
