2012 Jeep Wrangler Review: A Rare Miss For The Popular Off-Road SUV

Alex Showalter
Apr 9, 2022

The 2012 Wrangler lasts around 250,000 miles, but there are computer and engine problems. At $18,893 – 28,981, it’s a year to avoid due to the number of issues.

likeFilled The Good
Off-road performance is fantastic, the new engine offers more power and exterior styling is great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Suspension is very rough on the road, roll-over rates are higher than rivals and the soft top roof is not secure.

Is the 2012 Jeep Wrangler a Good Used SUV?

  • No, 2012 is a bad year for the Wrangler. Owners complain about electrical problems, frequent mechanical breakdowns, and leaks.
  • Reliability ratings are below average. Avoid models from 2012-2014 and go with a 2015 or newer model.
  • Performance is good from the redesigned V6 engine offering more power.
  • The Wrangler is not a safe SUV, only earning 3 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is poor at only 18 MPG combined.

Gas mileage could be better, but if you take care of the inside of your jeep it can go a long way.
I am able to drive my jeep on the road, then on the beach without any problems. I can get out of tight spaces by driving over stuff if need to. I love that I can tow another vehicle out of trouble if needed.

A good ride, but not for a long time.
My vehicle is dependable and makes me feel safe no matter what the weather. It is as comfortable as expected from a 4x4 jeep wrangler, but the seats could be slightly more welcoming. It has all the features I need: seat warmers, Bluetooth, power windows, CD player, leather seats... I wish my car was quieter though. While driving, the inside cabin is pretty loud and does not absorb sound well.

My Jeep is an ongoing project. I'm always adding or improving to it. It gets a lot of comments whenever people look at it.

Jeeps: they're reliable and safe.
There is really bad gas mileage but it is very reliable and it can handle the weather. It can handle off roading very well, I have run over many curbs and the car does just fine. The car is very tough as well. I was in an accident and the car did fine, stayed in one piece and did not have any dents or scratches. I was also safe.

Has been a great vehicle to own and drive. Haven't had any major is with it. And faults have been covered by the warranty.

The jeep wrangler is an awesome car to buy. Gives you all the fun of driving on the road while also giving you off-road capabilities that do not disappoint. I would suggest buying one with some modifications already done but do your research on what is good and bad to have on it as it really changes how the overall driving experience is. Compared to a car, this vehicle drives way less smooth but that is part of the reason why people love the jeep. It looks great also and you can modify it to look however you really want.

Fun off road vehicle with tons of modifications available
Love the freedom tops but they leak sometimes. Gas mileage is not that good but you don't buy a Jeep for the gas mileage. Love that the doors come off. Love being able to go off-roading. Wrangler is very sporty and fun to drive. There are so many modifications you can purchase to make it unique

Not trustworthy. Leaked, constant issue and is poor customer service via dealerships and jeep itself.

The engine in this car is reliable.
Love the Jeep but the interior broken down very quickly. The emergency break has never worked & has been fixed several times. Also the back gate does not work either & has been repaired easy 4 times. Can not hold the weight of the spare tire. When it swings out the hinge breaks & crushes tail light.

I love the option of taking the doors and top off in the summer.
I have been frequenting the mechanic and I only have 77,000 miles. Replacing sensors, electrical, transmission, fuel leak, tire issues, replace pcm, really bumpy ride, not too comfortable, unreliable and costly repairs. But I would lease it instead of own if given the opportunity.

Jeep wrangler 2012 model review.
I enjoy the interior design of my vehicle and the color (dark red). I have some complaints about the manual nature of the vehicle. For example I have to roll down the car windows and unlock the car directly (instead of automatically) using my key. I also find that my car shakes when I drive to fast on the highway so I cannot drive more than around 80 mph without feeling unsafe.

Its expensive. Its horrible on gas, it has horrible blind spots, .
Horrible gas mileage, slow, great for road trips, detachable doors and roof, great for moving things,

What Do Critics Say About the Wrangler?

  • Consumer Reports says the Wrangler is outdated in the modern world, and has average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Wrangler a 4.3/5 loving the off-road capabilities, but the cabin is noisy.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Wrangler a 4.5/5 and enjoy the rugged suspension, but find the performance weak on the roads.

What Common Problems Does the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Have?

The problems found on the 2012 Wrangler are serious including computer failures, expensive engine issues, and worn-out heaters.

Computer failures of the totally integrated power module (TIPM) are very common at around 50,000 miles. The problem is well documented across Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles. The only solution is to replace the computer costing over $1,300.

Cylinder head problems show up on some Wranglers in the first 45,0000 miles. Replacing the heads fixes the problems, but costs upwards of $5,000 depending on local labor rates.

Heater system issues are another frequent complaint at around 35,000 miles. The heater core wears out quickly, and is nearly $1,000 to replace.

There are 10 recalls, with the most serious being for a transmission fluid leak which causes transmission failure. Most of the other recalls are for the air bags and clock spring assemblies.

How Long Will the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Last?

A properly maintained 2012 Wrangler should last about 250,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles shorter than its closest competitor, the FJ Cruiser. Regular annual maintenance costs are expensive at $677 per year, according to Repair Pal.

Most 2012 Wranglers will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace thermostats for $375, shocks costing $450, and coolant reservoir tanks which cost $360.

I haven't had any big problems with my jeep. I keep it maintained. The only issues that I have had is the windshield. I have replaced my windshield a few times due to rock chips that turn into large cracks across the entire thing.

accountCircle Candace L

The wrangler sport is extremely reliable. I have never had any issues with the vehicle and it receives proper care to maintain its excellent condition.

accountCircle Brittany S

accountCircle Joanne D

Yes very reliable. No it does not have any problems at all. It is a very sound vehicle, not top heavy at all. Handles extremely well in all types of terrain.

How Much Is the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Worth?

What are the Different Models of the Wrangler?

What Colors Does the Wrangler Come In?

How Big Is the Wrangler?

The Wrangler is smaller than other midsize SUVs including the Highlander and Pilot. Passenger room is cramped in the backseats, even with the 4-door unlimited model.

Cargo space is less than rivals as well, with 17 cubic feet of space behind the seats of the 2 door increasing to 56.5 when folded flat. The 4-door is a little better with 46 cubic feet behind the seats, and 86.7 when folded flat.

How Does the Wrangler Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is the closest competitor costing about $5,000 more. Where the FJ Cruiser stands out is with a much more reliable drivetrain, but the Wrangler Rubicon is better off-road. We recommend the FJ Cruiser since they are more affordable to own long term.

The Toyota 4Runner is another rival, costing about $2,000 less. Passenger space and comfort are much better in the 4Runner, but the Wrangler is more capable off-road. We recommend the 4Runner since it’s a longer-lasting and more practical choice.

This car is perfect to cruise around in the summer with the roof off.
I love my jeep wrangler. The heated seats are perfect for the winter and the removable roof is great for the summer. The car is a little heavier so it cannot reach higher speeds, but it is the perfect car to cruise in. It is extremely reliable especially when using 4wd, on snow and ice there will be little to no sliding. I would definitely recommend this car for anyone who loves adventures or a good car to cruise around in.

Best off road vehicle to hit the road.
I always loved seeing jeep wranglers driving down the street when I was a kid, but was always told they were dangerous and rolled easy. Finally bought a jeep and I will not go to any other vehicle again. Performance wise it is amazing taking it off road gets out of almost anything I put it through, very reliable. It is not a Cadillac but the comfort is great.

2012 jeep wrangler a vehicle that has taken me everywhere I want to go.
Having a jeep has been great! It's a vehicle that has been able to take me anywhere I want to go in sunshine or in snow. I have had no major issues with my 2012 wrangler to date. It truly was worth every penny. The only thing I would change on it if I could go back to buying it again would have been more inside room. I would have bought the 4 door model. Next time for sure will be a 4 door even though the 2 doors look much better in my opinion.

Luke my car. Runs pretty good. Great in snow. Do not drive much anymore as I am now retired. Not great in gas though. Do not have any more to say. Parks easily. Not a large vehicle so fits everywhere easily. Hopefully will have good resale value. This is my second jeep wrangler.

Jeep wranglers are so much fun to drive. I love being able to take the top off and drive on the beach or in the mud. It is reliable, but does require maintenance. It is a comfortable, but sporty ride. The gas mileage is not great, but that is to be expected in an older model.

It has motor issues and some wobbling but other than that it has been a very dependable vehicle and I got it for Christmas my dad bought it for me. Comfort is great but I have a tall boyfriend and he barely fits, it has an aftermarket radio but as far as features that is the best one it is very rough on the road.

Great American made vehicle.
I have a 2012 6 spd manual wrangler. Both hard top and soft top were purchased at time of sale. I honestly have not had any major issues with this vehicle. I keep up with the oil changes, I have customized it, after the warranty expired of course. It was not purchased for handling or speed. 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sahara pros and cons over 100,000 miles
Having owned my 2012 Wrangler (two door) since new, I have encountered very few 'problems' it will sometimes leak water during a heavy rain, there have been minor mechanical issues that one would have with any vehicle such as both rear wheel seals leaking (this didn't happen until closer to 7 years old and almost 100k, And I replaced them myself ). For performance the 3.6 liter V6 has done very well for me, with just regular maintenance it has never given me any doubt about completing a road trip or making it to work in any weather conditions. When the sun is out the Three piece freedom top comes of easily allowing you to do what the jeep was made for putting a smile on your face and giving you a break from the monotony of daily commuting. But also know that a Jeep is good at being a Jeep! It is not like the larger SUVS with fold down third row seating, through the back seat does fold up/or removed completely you do not gain a colossal amount of space. So if have children or are planning on using the back seat often, you might want to do a few test runs getting in and out of the back seat before you make the final purchase.

The hard top roof is easy to remove and put back on.
We have the lowest end model so no electric locks or windows. It's a manual and fun to drive but it gets hot. I have a baby and we want to sell it now because it gets so warm in the back seat. The AC works great but the roof gets hot which makes it warm in the back. Sometimes it's hard to see the front side fenders when parking so it's deceiving. I do like driving it. It's fun and can go anywhere. We have mud tires on it which aren't great in the snow but in 4wd it's pretty good.

Why I love my jeep wrangler.
I love my jeep! It is as much of a hobby for me as a form of transportation. I take it off-road and really enjoy driving it on a warm, sunny day with the top down and doors off. It is not the most practical as an everyday driver, but it is worth it for the fun you can have.

I drive a red jeep wrangler unlimited with manual locks and windows.
I thoroughly enjoy my jeep! I do not feel like my gas mileage is too different from other SUVs. The maintenance is very minimal, I have had the same tires for 3 years now and they are working great! Sometimes I feel like the turn radius is a little larger than it should be, but I do not make too many au turns so it does not affect me too much. I like the option to take off just half of the hard top, which is usually what I do when I go off road. I highly suggest getting a jeep!

A few under-performances but a vehicle I will always cherish.
I really enjoy my 2012 arctic edition wrangler unlimited. The style and color scheme is beautiful. I love the way the windshield is closer and more vertical is comparison with other vehicles. Visibility is superb. It's roomy and the rear fold down seats in addition to the rear end space makes it easy to pack for long trips or load up my large dogs for a ride. It's easy to clean and the interior is rugged. I do not like the fact that 6th gear gives no pickup and is basically for fast downhill travel. The shocks and steering are beginning to get sloppy and bumpy. The gas mileage has been decreasing over the past couple years from about 21mpg to about 17 now. The 4 wheel drive works great and of course being a Jeep I love taking the top and doors off in warm weather. It is such a freeing feeling thriving under the open sky and hopping in and with ease. The stereo system with the extra built in subwoofer sounds incredible. Oh yeah and I love the whole Jeep community. And how they wave to each other.

Fun to drive and practical.
My 2012 jeep wrangler Sahara is a lot of fun to drive, and has a very tight turn radius, which makes it very easy to park. It has a high ground clearance so I have been able to drive over trees downed in the road on 2 occasions. It is boxy shape means you can fit more stuff in back. The only complaints I have are that the windshield is prone to being hit by small rocks thrown up from the road by dump trucks ( which are not required to have mud flaps in WI.

My only complaint would be that the cloth top is noisy when I'm driving above 50 mph and is not as easy to put back on as it is to take off and that, though convenient to drive, it is not very spacious, so passengers aren't exactly comfortable, especially not in the back seat.

Fun versatile vehicle the whole family will love.
We bought your jeep in 2012 brand new it was our first jeep and now we are hooked. We have had our 8 years now and it is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. The durability exceeded my expectations as I have always wanted to go trail riding and when it comes to trail riding or any off roading you plan on doing the suspension is more than capable. I highly recommend purchasing a jeep.

There is not really anything that someone would need to know about my vehicle.
Really fun car. The gas mileage is decent. Definitely not as bad as a larger vehicle. However, I wouldn't consider taking on a road trip. Between mileage and size it would be inconvenient and pricey. But for everyday it is great. Meant for off-road driving, I however cannot attest to that aspect of the car. I generally just do some city and highway occasionally. Overall, enjoyable vehicle I would recommend.

The car has literally no problems at all.
So far no problems with my car besides changing oil quite often. It drives well and is good for off roading. We have taken it camping a few times. The seats are very comfortable and have a lot of room to get comfortable. Enough room for our 2 dogs in the back. It hasn't broken down or overheated at all. So far it's a good vehicle

Jeep Wrangler - Highly Recommend. You will not be disappointed.
My Jeep Wrangler is the most amazing and capable vehicles I have owned. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking adventure and the ability to off-road. The performance is unmatched, while never sacrificing comfort. I have had both a brand new Rubicon with less than 7 miles on it and I have purchased one with over 60K miles, both ran exactly the same and never wavered in reliability. Again, I highly recommend any model of Jeep. You honestly cannot go wrong!

It does not get really good fuel mileage.
My Jeep Wrangler is a really good and sturdy vehicle. I have not had too many problems with it just yet. The only problems so far was the ball joints eventually wearing out due to age and also had to replace my steering stabilizer.

Jeep review: great chill, summer driving car.
My jeep has treated me very well for the last year I have had it. The exterior is gorgeous as well as the interior. It is great during summer when I can have my top off and the doors off, it makes for a great summer experience. The only problem is the gas mileage. I pay lots of money for gas in short amounts of time and it can be frustrating.
