2016 Jeep Wrangler Review: An Off-Road Oriented SUV With Dated Tech

Alex Showalter
Nov 9, 2021

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is an SUV with a price range of $31,826 to $44,571. It’s not the best SUV for the money, focusing heavily on off-road enthusiasts, and Jeep fans with limited-edition models.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
It’s a fantastic vehicle to take on off-road adventures with standard 4-wheel drive, and a long-lasting engine. It depreciates slowly, making it a better value than other SUVs.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The Wrangler rides very rough on the road with large tires and a lifted suspension. Safety scores are poor for its class, and it’s missing the latest technology.

2016 Jeep Wrangler: Quick Overview

  • New features for 2016 include changes to the Sahara model, and the introduction of the Black Bear Edition.
  • Reliability rankings are average according to J.D. Power. 2016 has fewer complaints than older models.
  • One engine is available. It’s a V6 with adequate power for driving off-road, but feels weak at highway speeds.
  • Fuel economy is below average for its class, placing it near the bottom of the midsize SUV lineup. It gets a combined fuel rating of 18 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are below average, earning only a 3-star rating in government crash tests.
  • The 2016 Wrangler exists in a class of its own, since most vehicles are not as focused on off-road performance. Compared to other SUVs at the same price point, it loses out on comfort and technology, but wins in its ability to go on an adventure. Paint job & very good resale value.
I really love my Jeep Rubicon, it is hard top but can remove everything --doors, roof & sun roof for front passengers. The leather seats are very comfortable, an excellent sound system, my tires are 32 inches & still have a very smooth ride. No problems with Jeep at all.

I love my Jeep. I like the four wheel drive capabilities and the ruggedness of the jeep.

It's a blast to drive on road and if you so choose off road as well.
It's fun to drive, gets decent gas mileage. Makes me feel like part of the Jeep family. Does an excellent job in the snow.

Reliable and dependable and low cost maintenance.
Good on all types of terrain.. Easy to drive.. Durable and dependable.. Low cost maintenance and easy appointments.

Great little truck for everyday use.
No issues other than the inside is very simple looking. Navigational software very remedial. Not many bells and whistles. Rides great, smoother than you think for being a Jeep. Sometimes top leaks if panels not put exactly back in place. Better storage on center console behind shift knob would be great.

Its basic but an go anywhere and do anything I need it to do.
No complaints. It is durable and fun to drive! It fits all of my family with room to carry groceries or camping gear.

I love my Jeep Wrangler Sahara hands down.
I love my Jeep. The only problem I have had are pretty routine - I had to replace the battery last week. Prior to that the ABS sensor went out and is located on the driver's side rear tire. The dealership quoted $200-$300 to replace, but my husband got the sensor from O'Reilly's for $25 and replaced it himself. There have been no other problems or issues.

The speed and enjoyability of the car is off the charts fantastic!
The jeep wrangler is easy and fun to drive. The car is very responsive, so it is also an easy car to learn to drive in. The speakers are a very nice added feature that helped my family and I to enjoy the car even more. We all love this car, and my whole family wants to drive it whenever possible. It is very zippy and fast, although it was a tendency to lean/shake in the wind, which can be concerning, but very easy to control if you are not going too fast. The top comes off, allowing nice wind and sun to enter the car, adding to the experience of driving it.

Jeep wrangler - always breaking down.
My car is always having issues. Whether it's the breaks, the tires, a fuse, the windshield, or the lights something is always broken. I've put way too much money into fixing it every month. Right now the radio won't work because the fuse blew out. And the charger ports aren't working either. Last month it was the breaks that were not working.

Lack of dependability
Hell no!!! If you're thinking about buying one, you may as well account for $40,000 for the price of the vehicle. $10,000 in upgrades and basic items that should have been included in the price. And around $10,000 for repairs....basic repairs like power steering pump at 50K miles. Wheel speed sensor at 45K miles. Ignition coils go out at about 40K miles. Heater/AC fan, brake calipers, new rear dime light ( the whole thing not just the bulb, rear defroster broke off, driver's side freedom top leaking, rebuilt manual transmission because for some weird reason it doesn't like to go into 4th gear. I'll stop there cause it's getting late. And my jeep only has 60,128 miles on it. Never upgraded the wheels or tires yet. No lift kit yet. I feel like the things that have failed on my jeep are normal failures, but not at 40K miles. I mean c'mon. I had to spend $600 in sound deadening material for the inside so I could have a decent conversation with my wife while going down the highway. This vehicle is a black hole. A money pit. And it's ok if ya got it but I'm just trying to keep mine running long enough to be able to do upgrades.

Not fancy, boxy ride, not luxurious. Had to get it to tow with my rv

I really liked the price of my vehicle. I like the off road dirt style.
My car has a lot of engine issues. I constantly have to take it to the mechanic. I do not trust it to drive very far. The car doesn't drive smooth. Its drives pretty rough. However, the design is very attractive, the interior is very cool. I enjoy how the car looks but there are some mechanical issues that I do deal with.

2016, white 4 door hard/soft top jeep wrangler.
My 2016 jeep wrangler, is a great affordable SUV, good for buyers whom may enjoy the off -road experience. It has good gas mileage 21 miles for city driving and 21 miles if used on the highway. The leather interior gives it a sleek and expensive look. The four wheel drive option makes it very safe for winter weather. It is extremely reliable, as I had bought it brand new, off the dealer lot and have never had any major issues with it in the 5 years I have owned it. The soft top is very easy to put down in nicer weather, which is one of a jeep's perks! The ride can be a bit of an issue for some not used to a jeep. It is bumpy and rough at times. Getting in and out is easy with the handles above the doors. The engine power is okay, you will not beat anyone in a race but that is not what a jeep is made for. A jeep is for carefree owners who enjoy fresh air with the removable doors and roof. I would definitely buy another jeep if needed.

Fun & zippy! Great car for around town or off roaring.
Has a problem with the anti lock braking system. Other than that it is a great vehicle. I use it for driving around town, no road trips or anything. It is fun & zippy! It is comfortable, but also jumps. I have a two door & I recommend getting the 4 door. It seems more stable & better for road trips. The 2 door sometime feels like it is going to roll.

I took my vehicle off-roading on the beach in the Outer Banks.
It gets me from point a to point b but I am not a fan of the low mpg or that it has had a fair share of mechanical issues. It does provide fun opportunities for off-roading and is good when road conditions are poor. Overall, it is an alright vehicle and has taken me on several great adventures but in the future I will likely look for a vehicle that is a little easier on the gas.

Wonderful and fun to be able to take the tops off.
I really enjoy my Jeep other then having to have the top seals replaced several times. Dealership worked with us to get those fixed promptly.

What Problems Does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Have?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is an improvement over the 2015 and earlier model years, with fewer problems.

Engine problems are the most frequent complaints from owners. Usually a check engine light will turn on at the dash, and reading the code can help determine the source of the problem. Replacing the cylinder head, or lifters is often needed to solve the issues.

Transmission failures are next in the line of complaints. It’s a rare problem, but there are reported failures around 30,000 miles. If you test drive a Wrangler, make sure there’s not excessive noise while shifting.

Bluetooth connectivity not working properly is also mentioned by owners. It’s most likely a software problem with either the phone or the car. Usually when the infotainment system is reset it will connect again.

There are 4 recalls affecting the 2016 Wrangler, average for an SUV its age. Recalls include the clockspring assembly, front impact sensor, passenger airbag inflator, and the seat belt buckle. All of the recalls are safety related, and will not cause any mechanical breakdowns. Addressing them is important, helping protect the driver and passengers.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler trims include rugged Sport and souped up Rubicon Hard Rock. The 2016 Wrangler is more expensive than other SUVs, with a price range of $31,826 to $44,571, depending on the model and mileage. In the current car market, the 2016 Wrangler is more expensive than it was when new. In 2016 it had a retail price of $23,895 to $36,995. The Wrangler depreciates slower than other SUVs as well, and in normal market conditions loses 30% of its value in the first 5 years.

  • Sport is the base model with cloth seating, a stereo with AM/FM/CD player and AUX connectivity, 16-inch steel wheels, and manual door locks.
  • Sahara is above it in the lineup and adds embroidered cloth seats, 18-inch wheels, air conditioning, a heavy-duty suspension, and power windows and door locks.
  • Rubicon is the flagship model and is built for off-road performance with improved locking axles, a new suspension, and larger 32 inch off-road tires.
  • There are also special edition models including Willys Wheeler, Black Bear, Freedom, and 75th Anniversary. Each offers unique interior and exterior styling as well as special wheels for a more personalized Jeep.

How Long Will the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Last?

A properly maintained 2016 Wrangler will last over 250,000 miles. There are examples of older Wranglers that have traveled over 400,000 miles, but ownership costs increase as it gets older and needs more repairs. Maintenance costs are high for an SUV. Repair Pal estimates it will cost $785 per year to keep one running.

accountCircle Jorge A

Yes it is. I have never had a problem but the car is not cheap there a bite pricey to be honest. If you have the money buy it.

accountCircle Kadie S

Very reliable. No problems that I have experienced. It is a simple design and parts are relatively inexpensive.

accountCircle Amy C

The jeep is very reliable! I do all my own maintenance so I haven't had any major issues so far. The only problem I have had is when traveling to cold climates the tires lose pressure but that is not really a jeep issue and I have changed out tires.

accountCircle Katie F

Yes it is reliable and a safe car. I have not had any problems. The windshield cracks easily because it is so vertical.

accountCircle jake w

Yes it is very reliable. We haven't had any issues from it at all. I think it's a great vehicle for reliable.

accountCircle R D

The jeep wrangler sport is very reliable. I have never had any problems. This vehicle always gets me where I need to be without any hassles.

accountCircle Madison N

I have had no issues with my jeep. My car does a good job at letting me know when I need to fill up the tires, get an oil change, etc. Other than these maintenance necessities, I have not had any issues.

accountCircle Nicole B

The Jeep itself is very reliable. The problems come from the soft top that I bought aside from the Jeep. Whenever it rains, it always leaks on one spot into the Jeep itself

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

Technology is basic in the 2016 Wrangler. It loses out to other SUVs with its dated infotainment system, and no advanced safety technology. If technology is important to you, then the redesigned 2018 model is a better choice.

  • Standard technology includes an AM/FM/CD stereo system with AUX input and MP3 playback capabilities
  • Optional upgrades include navigation and an improved Alpine stereo system with 9-speakers.
  • For safety, the Wrangler has airbags, ABS, disc brakes, stability control, rollover protection, and traction control.

What Engine Options are Available?

Only one engine is available in the 2016 Wrangler, a 3.6L V6 with 285 horsepower. Performance is average, going from 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds. The towing capacity is low for a midsize SUV, at 3,500 pounds.

What Colors Options are Available?

How Big is the Cherokee?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is available in 2-door and 4-door configurations. Seating in the Wrangler is uncomfortable and basic, even on higher-end models. There is a decent amount of room in the front seats, but the rear seats are cramped on both body styles. It also has one of the smallest cargo areas of any SUV. The 2-door model has less room than most compact cars, with only 12.8 cu. ft. of room behind the seats, fitting only about 2 suitcases. It increases in the 4-door model to 31.5 cu. ft. of space, still below average for its class.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other SUVs?

The 2016 Wrangler ties for second place among midsize SUVs based on owner reviews. At the top of the class is the Toyota 4Runner, which is another off-road oriented SUV in a similar price range. Where Toyota wins is in overall comfort, material quality, and technology. The Wrangler is very focused on off-road performance, and it suffers on-road. If you need a 4WD SUV for a daily driver, the 4Runner is a better choice, but if you know you will spend most of your time on the trails then the Wrangler is the way to go.

Another competitor is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Both vehicles are made by Jeep and have similar reliability ratings, but the Wrangler lasts longer based on ownership data. The two SUVs are marketed at different buyers, with the Grand Cherokee being a better choice for shoppers looking for luxury, and the Wrangler is better for driving off-road. The Grand Cherokee is also a better value, with a lower purchase price and better technology. Overall, choosing between the two comes down to personal preference and your plans on how you will use it.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a Good SUV?

Based on 466 owner reviews and research from 11 automotive and government websites, yes, the 2016 Wrangler is a good SUV. It has built a reputation over the years as an excellent off-roader, and is long-lasting. Where it falls short is with limited technology, and an uncomfortable ride on the road. If you’re in the market for an SUV that can go anywhere, it’s a great choice.

This jeep stands out in a crowd.
Very reliable. Great gas mileage. So much fun to drive. Easy to park. Has been problem free. I live in a snowy area and it handles the snow very well. I feel safe when I am driving no matter the weather. It has had several airbag recalls that were addressed quickly and easily.

Jeep wrangler sport - 2016.
I love this car, it is literally my dream car. Personally, I have had no issues with it and bought it used with over 60,000 miles on it and still looking brand new. Recently it has started to have shifting issues, but it quickly fixes itself. Other than that, nothing to complain about.

Jeep sport review by new jeep owner.
I love my vehicle. It is bad on gas mileage however so is not made for long trips or destinations. I recommend having another car for these. I use it for short drives to work or the beach or groceries. It is a safe car and has not given me any problems since I bought it last year other than some brake issues due to it being an old car. I like the way it drives and it came with pretty good speakers as well. It is definitely fun for warm weather however in Florida it rains and if the roof is off it can be difficult to get back on as it is a soft top car.

My vehicle is a white jeep wrangler 4 door sport edition.
Bumpy on uneven surfaces, doors never shut unless slammed, gas runs out quickly. The fenders al thought the vehicle is only 2016 and has not been driven often are already discolored and I need to get them replaced. Other than this the vehicle is quite pleasant. The air conditioning works really well and the v6 engine is powerful.

Jeep wrangler. Reliable and sturdy.
Jeep wrangler is sturdy and does not break down easily. The steering is as sturdy as the body looks. Brake work well and efficiently. During rainy seasons it is very reliable on turns and braking. The only issue that can be pointed out is the low gas rate mph. For long drives, gas tank has to fill up often.

My jeep is reliable. I have never had a problem with it in any type of weather. I do enjoy using four wheel drive in the snow time. It makes driving a lot easier. I love my jeep, I haven't had any issues. It came with a hardtop and I plan on getting a soft top to make it easier to go topless. It is not great on gas compared to a regular sedan, but it is not terrible. It is a 2 door, but still has plenty of room for storage when the back seat is down.

I haven't had any major issues with the jeep. Does great on any terrain. Nice ride and plenty of room. Does extremely well in snow and mud especially with good rough tread tires. It's a beast. We love the unlimited versatility of the Jeep. Taking the doors off and going topless is very liberating. 2016 Jeep wrangler review- our family car.
I love this vehicle, it can go anywhere. The only downs are the sound system is not very good and it takes longer to gain speed but for regulars driving and adventuring its great. It is always fun in the summer to have the option to take the doors and roof off and have the Jeep as a complete convertible, but still be a larger SUV. We never have to worry if our Jeep can make it somewhere or not because it can go pretty much anywhere.

Jeeps get a lot of positive attention with their iconic style and practicality.
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler Sport is a wonderful car. It has a classic style, is popular among individuals of all ages, and is truly reliable. The 2 door style is small enough to drive easily, yet it still has a 'big car' feeling. My vehicle did not come with a USB port, however, I purchased an adapter that works great. Also, when carpooling multiple people, it can be quite a hassle to get into the backseat. The removable T-Tops, iconic look, and modern updates makes this vehicle worth every penny.

Great vehicle for personal use, but not an everyday commuter vehicle.
Great vehicle for having fun and enjoying fresh air during trips. Not great for gas mileage. I did have to replace battery after only 2 years after purchase and there is a dripping noise coming from inside my dash, but have had no problems other than those two. Comfortable and well-built, but would not consider this a very good commuter vehicle simply due to the low gas mileage.

Once you drive a jeep you will never want to own another vehicle.
I have had technical problems with sensors and also the soft top leaking. But all in all it is a great and reliable vehicle. It makes me feel very safe when driving on the highway. I am constantly looking for reasons to take the top off and take it off roading with my 4 wheel drive.

I am a jeep girl for life!
I am a jeep girl so I am biased but my jeep is powerful, comfortable, versatile. It is really easy to take the tops off once you get the hang of it and it is perfect for late summer days. I have a 2 door and I live on a narrow street and I can always get it to fit in little spots. I took my back seats out to make the drive lighter and to save on fuel economy (and to have more trunk space).

Jeep wrangler vs tesla model 3.
I really do love my jeep wrangler hard rock edition, I own it in all white, with led lights and off road tires. However, I do plan on getting a tesla model 3 soon instead. I feel like the wasted money spent on gas really does make me like the car less. Also the “jeep wobble” in the car is pretty harsh at highway speeds. Overall if you asked me which one I rather have between the two I would definitely go with the tesla. Although I do have to say, the jeep definitely is a looker!

2016 jeep wrangler Sahara - most favorite of all vehicles I have ever owned.
What's not to love about the jeep wrangler? I bought mine new in 2016. It is a six-speed manual transmission (turns out manual was difficult to find, but totally worth it). I live in Arizona, so I have the top and doors off regularly (which is very easy to do, by the way - it only takes a few minutes). I have taken the jeep off-road on a few occasions and it performs like a champ. One of my favorite things about jeeps is that there are so many customization options - it is very easy to make your jeep unique and exactly how you want it. Admittedly, jeeps are not exactly economical when it comes to fuel consumption, but I work from home and really only drive around town, so I am not too worried about the gas mileage, which I believe is around 16 city 21 highway. Anyway, I absolutely love my 2016 jeep wrangler Sahara and would recommend it to anyone seeking a rugged vehicle that is fun to drive.

Perfect amount of ruggedness and luxury.
My rubicon is the most reliable vehicle I have owned. It is rather expensive (price tag and maintenance: 4wd). I have had two wrangler sports in the past, with very basic features. I have found that I do not need a ton of bells and whistles but, the backup camera, seat warmers and leather seats are just what I need to make my wrangler experience just what I am looking for.

It is slow. But it performs all the tasks I need and more. Would love more aerodynamics to improve gas consumption

It's the best car ever. I really do like it.
I love the jeep and love taking the top off. It is really spacious if you have a 4 door. If you are traveling, the passenger can't really stretch out at all.

Jeep wrangler not all it is cracked up to be.
Love the model and it is versatility/ruggedness, but it has had performance issues include faulty heater core not covered by warranty (despite being a known manufacturer’s error during engine casting), leaky soft top, and severe undercarriage corrosion.

Lives up to rugged outdoor claim.
Made for the outdoors. Not the most comfortable seats you are ever going to sit in compared to a sedan or truck, but handles beautifully in the snow, on the trails, and climbing in/out of mud. Incredibly easy to pop the front panels on the roof off (less that 5 min), and only an additional 5-10min to pull the rest of the roof off. My biggest complaint is the blind spots out the back, but you get used to relying on your mirrors instead. Also a pain when it comes time to wash it down and clean it up- lots of knobs and bolts all around that require a toothbrush to actually get clean.

Go 4 door over 2 door for the Jeep Wrangler
The Wrangler has great pick up, handles well in urban and rural areas. Easy to park and drives great. The 4 door has much more trunk space than the 2 door and seats 5 where the 2 door seats 4. Unfortunately the factory bumpers are not the same quality they used to be. Dents extremely easy.

I really like how the roof of the car can come off during the summer heats.
I really like my vehicle and overall I am very happy with it!! I have not really run into any major problems with my jeep and it is a reliable vehicle. It is very comfortable and there is plenty of legroom and space available in the trunk. The radio and aux cord features are some of my favorites as well as the air conditioning which cools off the car very quickly in the hot summer heat. You have to be a little careful dirigible fast on the highway in the snow but otherwise it is a wonderful car and I recommend it to anyone considering buying this car!!

Jeep Wrangler Love it So Much
I love the way the vehicle rides. It's very comfortable. I love that the doors and top comes off. I also like the seats.

Jeep Drives good and no problems if you keep it maintained

Fun and reliable car - comfortable front seats!
Such a fun car. Great drive, comfortable for front seats. Not a ton of room in the back seats for long drives, but fine for driving around town. Not a great turn radius and takes a little longer to speed up quickly. Although, the car is definitely reliable and I have had zero troubles with it since purchase.

Jeep wrangler Sahara 2016.
Uconnect in jeeps seem to always glitch when new software comes out. It is not a problem but music will glitch until the software is straightened out. Other than that there’s no other issues with the car. It is a fun car and fun to drive around. Nothing I would suggest to improve.

Grey jeep with lifted tires.
My jeep has not had any problems at all, it works rly good. I bought it at a Chrysler lot, barely used. It is been very reliable. Comfort is good the only thing is you have to jump to get in it and that can be hard especially for me right now because I am pregnant. But seats are comfortable and I like how spacious jeeps are. Features of my jeep would be the top comes off if you want or you can detail it how you want your jeep to look. Air conditioning, Bluetooth radio, heated seats, came with seat covers and floor mats. Big spacious back for the trunk to fit a lot of stuff in. And also I feel like driving a jeep is more safe than driving a car in case of weather and other traffic issues that can come.

White jeeps are the best for sure.
Had a couple recalls that were taken care of but love the look of the car. Added leather heated seats and remote start are really nice. Rides kind of loud making Bluetooth talking on the phone difficult. It can go anywhere. I added larger tires as well.
