2019 Jeep Wrangler Review: Fun Off-Roader That Holds Up Well Over Time

Alex Showalter
Dec 21, 2022

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler lasts around 250,000 miles with only some steering system and electrical issues reported. At $27,700 to $41,425, it’s expensive, but worth it for an off-road SUV with the lowest depreciation on the market.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Off-road capabilities are second to none, the V6 engine offers good power for the Wrangler’s size and the touchscreen works well.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is bouncy on paved roads, fuel economy is worse than many other SUVs and the cabin is very noisy.

Is the 2019 Jeep Wrangler a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2019 is a good year for the Wrangler, although it sacrifices daily driver practicality for off-road performance, giving it an average overall score. Owner reviews praise the fun driving experience, lifted suspension along with the powerful V6.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are nicer than older models, the seats offer decent support, cargo space is lower than many other SUVs, though.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no serious mechanical problems on the 2019 Wrangler. In general models from 2013 through 2021 are all good choices.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is okay from either of the engine options, although it’s not very quick.
  • Safety 6/10 – The 2019 Wrangler earns 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests, it comes standard with a rearview camera. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, as well as automatic emergency braking.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – Fuel economy is low at up to 24 MPG, giving 516 miles of range from the 21.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $15 higher than average at $247 per month.
  • Value 9/10 – The 2019 Jeep Wrangler loses value slower than any other SUV on the market, making it a great long-term value.

Top technology and safe driving.
My jeep is great. I feel safe on the road. The new technology alerts me about other cars on the road. The music and calls from my phone integrate with the car speakers. The only glitch is sometimes when I start the car there will be no sound until I stop and start up the car again.

Has a pair of flip flops engraved near the wiper blades.
I love the comfort of my vehicle. Its color is different than most other vehicles on the road. It is comfort and even though it is a jeep made for off road driving it is not bumpy at all. It is an easy and comfortable ride. The tops can be removed so the jeep becomes a convertible. Very easy to remove for a nice ride on a gorgeous day.

Call of the jeep: adventure and the road.
The jeep performs extremely well. I have never had more fun in a vehicle. The whole family fits and loves our adventures. It is very comfortable and surprising good on gas. I love it and will always have a jeep as one of my vehicles. There is no reason not to start this adventure.

All around great vehicle!
I had to have the steering gear replaced but the warranty covered it so it's nice to not have to come out of pocket for it. I love you all around good uses and easily customizable ability for this vehicle. I would recommend this to everyone that I know it is the greatest vehicle I have ever had.

Adventure of United States.
Jeep Sahara, comfortable with great Sirius radio and air conditioning. Seats are very comfortable. Vehicle is black and white 4 door. Great vehicle for going cross country, as we did this past fall. Jeep itself is roomy, and we have large area in rear. Vehicle is a hard top and great for secured storage.

Jeep are great vehicles to own.
The jeep Sahara is a great everyday vehicle. The leather seats are very comfortable. The heated seats are very nice to have in the winter. The jeep Sahara also has the auto start which is also a nice addition for the winter months. I love getting into a warm vehicle with the seats already heated when it is cold outside. The hard top t roof is very easy to take off and put back in whenever you want. The storage bag that is included keeps the t top safe from scratches while it is being stored. The back seat is roomy. You can fit two car seats or two adults comfortably in the back. The storage compartment in the back is great for putting my reusable grocery bags in. And also for storing a very tools that are needed to take the doors off. Removing the doors is easy although the doors themselves are heavy. There are storage pockets in the back of the front seats. It is a great place to keep my travel dog bowl.

Love my 2019 jeep - highly recommend! Amazing heating steering wheel.
I love my jeep! The heated steering wheel and heated seats are amazing in the winter. I love the drive, not bumpy like some think. Very comfortable and looks great! Only thing I do not like is the death wobble. Other than that it is a great car I’d recommend to anyone!

My vehicle is mojito green and has the convertible top, which is so nice.
The only problem I have is with the steering wheel, it can never go straight, and with the windshield wipers, but I can just get new ones. Love the inside and the one-touch top. I have the heated seats and heated steering wheel which is such a nice touch.

Unreliable
I purchased a 2019 Jeep Wrangler as it had been a dream car of mine for decades. It has been in the shop many times, and now there are two major problems: a clutch recall and steering drift. When I received the recall notice a few days ago, I was not surprised, as I had planned on bringing the car in anyway as the clutch was having trouble, is mushy (have to hit the floor a few times to get it to engage), it smells like it is burning (that can't be good), and it only has 3K on it. This car is an absolute disappointment. The steering seems to have a mind of its own, it wanders and one can not rely on their own driving savvy to handle the road. The car drifts, especially over100K per hour (60MPH). YIKES Even though it is under warranty, it is absolutely not worth it.

Problematic Steering
2019 Jeep Wrangler JL, the Steering Story This review is for my brand new Jeep Wrangler JL 2-door hard top in ocean blue metallic color. This vehicle was built in April 2019. It is stock, with no mods or consumer-added equipment. I’m writing this review with 250 miles on the odometer. I’ve been driving Wranglers since 2002, and this is my third one after owning a Wrangler Sport X and a Wrangler Sahara, both 2-door configurations. The JL model was introduced in 2018 and replaces the JK model which has been discontinued. Taken as a whole, the JL is a more refined vehicle with a better ride and numerous improvements described on this and other websites. If it were not for one glaring fault, I would wholeheartedly recommend the 2019 Wrangler JL to anyone interested in owning one of these vehicles which are uniquely qualified for off-road use. They are over-priced, but you will not find many competitors that have the appearance of the Wrangler and its off-road capabilities. Unfortunately, however, the current manufacturer of Jeep vehicles, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, has somehow managed to devise a steering system in the JL Wrangler which takes lots of the joy out of owning and driving it. From the first drive out of the dealer’s parking lot, I noticed that the steering of the new Wrangler had a vague and wandering feel totally different than my previous Jeeps or any other vehicle I have owned. On the interstate, the steering is downright frightening and requires two-handed control to keep it from wandering into adjacent lanes. I cannot relax and rely on my driving instincts while driving this vehicle; to do so will result in loss of control. I immediately began to investigate as to whether this was unique to my particular vehicle, or to a larger group. The salesman and service manager where I bought it professed ignorance about any such problem. However, a brief search on the internet revealed a plethora of complaints about the steering in the 2018 and 2019 Wrangler JL’s. The NHTSA has received over 500 complaints specifically addressing this issue with the JL’s. Internet forums specializing in Jeep Wranglers are awash with complaints and lengthy discussions about the terrible steering characteristics in the new Wrangler. And yet, there are some owners who have not experienced the flaw or have adapted to it, according to what I read on line. Even media-based reviewers have given this phenomenon scant notice. Of course, the manufacturer, as far as I can see, is somewhat mute about this issue and probably will not make it right until someone is killed or reviews such as this have a slowing effect on sales. My advice to anyone considering purchasing a new Wranger JL in any of its configurations would be to carefully test drive the exact one you may buy, both on a narrow two-lane road and on a highway where you can attain speeds over 55 mph. If your prospective new vehicle steers normally for you, go for it. However, if it feels strange, seems to want to wander, or feels like you’re driving in a wind storm, you may want to reconsider, because it will probably be a long time before FCA acknowledges the problem and fixes it.

2019 wrangler is the worst Jeep I ever had. Has way too much play in steering wheel- radio is not user friendly- will not move with door open . Never had this problem with my three previous wranglers. Jeep needs to recall and fix these damm problems

The best highlight I have had with my jeep was taking it to Pismo Beach to the.
There’s no problems with my jeep but if your not an outdoors adventure person it is a waste of money to get it is not that comfy the backseat is super squishy and can barely fit my kids I would not personally get this car if you plan on expanding your family size. It is the perfect car if your single and camp out a lot best feature of this jeep is all doors and roof top can come off and my kids look forward to summer so we can do just that.

The vehicle is good but an update is needed.
Driving it is pretty rough as the shocks need improvement. I like that you sit up high but the sport model sure could use more engine power because the pick-up from a stand still is not very good. In addition, the comfort of the seats could use an update as does the technology because it seems very outdated and behind its competitors.

My jeep wrangler - pros and cons.
I like my vehicle not perfect but not terrible. It is great in the snow which is important because I am from NJ and it is super fun in the summer as the top is removable and it is overall a very fun car. On the other hand it is not very comfortable or luxurious and it does not drive smooth.

It is a love hate relationship.
I am a jeep guy and have owned many. The new model has the best gas mileage of any I have owned. The ride is horrible and jeep does not know how to fix it. If you have one or buy one start with heavier sway bars front and back, it will make it drivable.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Wrangler?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Jeep Wrangler offers improved engines and a nicer interior with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Wrangler a 3.4/5, praising the spacious 4-door model, but doesn’t like the slow steering responsiveness.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Wrangler at 4.3/5, enjoying the outstanding off-road performance, but don’t like the noisy cabin.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Jeep Wrangler include steering system issues, electrical shutdowns, as well as some poor quality paint. Overall, these problems are worse than other SUVs, although they’re similar to other off-road-oriented choices, leading to average repair bills.

Steering system issues are the most widespread complaint from 2019 Jeep Wrangler owners at around 15,000 miles. There are steering linkage issues which are commonly called the “death wobble”. Replacing the steering linkage is usually covered in the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. If it’s out of warranty then replacing the linkage costs around $1,200.

Electrical shutdowns have also been mentioned in the first 20,000 miles. Updating the powertrain control module software usually solves the problem. Many dealerships will update the software for free, while some may charge up to $100.

Poor quality paint is another issue reported by owners at roughly 10,000 miles. The paint particularly around the door hinges, tends to bubble and peel. Paint in this area is thinner and exposed to more wear and tear than in other areas. Repainting the damaged areas costs around $350.

There are 6 recalls on the 2019 Jeep Wrangler, which is more than many other SUVs. The most serious recalls cover the front suspension track bar, which can detach. Jeep will replace the bar for free on affected models. Other recalls cover the rearview camera as well as the seat belt retractors, which are not as mechanically serious, yet still need to be addressed.

How Long Will the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Jeep Wrangler can last around 250,000 miles, which is about 50,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota 4Runner. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than other SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $650 per year.

As a used 2019 Wrangler reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the suspension ball joints for $600, fuel sending unit costing around $850, as well as the radiator hoses which cost $400.

accountCircle Robert B

I have only 12k miles on my jl. So far no problems. I did encounter a blow out at ~9k miles. This was caused by a road hazard,

accountCircle Kathy H

It has been reliable so far without any problems. The retractable top works great and all the components to remove the doors, windows, etc have worked smoothly as well thus far.

accountCircle Nikki T

Yes very reliable. I've only had for three weeks and no problems at all. Rides very well, much better than my previous 2015 Jeep Wrangler.

accountCircle Shan R

It is very reliable and I have not had any problems other than it being noisy but overall a very reliable car

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2019 Jeep Wrangler with a standard 5-inch touchscreen display. There’s a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen available as an optional upgrade, along with a more powerful stereo system.

Safety technology is similar to many other SUVs on the market with a standard rearview camera. Optional safety tech upgrades are in the advanced safety group package which includes rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, as well as adaptive cruise control.

Is the 2019 Jeep Wrangler a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler is a good value since it’s a fantastic off-roader with no real competition. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $27,900 to $41,800, making it more than a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Honda Passport. When new, the price range was $28,045 to $41,545. Depreciation is better than nearly all other SUVs, only losing about 2% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Jeep Wrangler?

There are four main models of the 2019 Jeep Wrangler offered, from the base Sport all the way up to the very capable Rubicon. All Jeep Wrangler models come with standard four-wheel drive. They also are offered with either a two-door regular model, or the larger four-door Wrangler Unlimited.

What Engines Come In the Jeep Wrangler?

  • The standard engine found in the 2019 Jeep Wrangler is a strong 3.6L V6 which makes 285 horsepower while getting up to 20 MPG. It’s offered with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission. Performance is okay, taking 7.5 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH. The maximum towing capacity is low at 3,500 pounds.
  • An available upgrade is  the more efficient 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder which produces 270 horsepower at up to 24 MPG.

What Colors Does the Jeep Wrangler Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Wrangler?

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler is not the most comfortable SUV on the market, with seating for up to five passengers. Seating is okay, although it’s not very supportive on longer drives since it has basic cushions.

Passenger room is bad in the back seats of the two door models, while the four-door Wrangler Unlimited model offers plenty of legroom for taller adults in the rear seats.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Wrangler Have?

Cargo space is worse than other SUVs, offering enough space for 2-3 suitcases behind the seats of the two-door model and 5-6 with the seats folded flat. The larger four-door Unlimited model has enough room for 5-6 suitcases behind the seats, and around 15 with the rear seats folded flat.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fourth generation of the Jeep Wrangler, called the JL model, was launched in 2018.

2015: Tool kit includes tools needed to remove the doors, stereo system upgraded.

2016: New exterior color choices available and special edition models added.

2017: New optional upgrades include remote start, heated seats, and LED headlights.

2018: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new styling, technology, and engine choices.

2019: Adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning systems added.

2020: Optional V6 diesel engine offered, Moab model discontinued.

2021: New 4xe Hybrid model introduced, and powerful Rubicon 392 model launched.

How Does the Jeep Wrangler Compare to the Competition?

The Jeep Wrangler is a very good off-road oriented SUV, although it’s hard to live with as a daily driver since you sacrifice a lot of the comfort and practicality for the great performance on the trails.

The Toyota 4Runner is another SUV which is available for around $3,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Toyota 4Runner, while the narrower Jeep Wrangler handles off-road driving better. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner since they have fewer problems reported by owners as they age.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a competitor from Jeep which is about $2,000 less. Interior materials are much more luxurious in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the four-wheel drive system in the Jeep Wrangler is much more capable. We recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee for a practical daily driver, although the Jeep Wrangler is much more fun to drive.

My thoughts on having an overpriced jeep wrangler Sahara.
It does not handle well on the highway when it is windy. It gets tossed all around when the wind goes up underneath the vehicle. The vehicle is very expensive and after owning it for two years I do not feel that it is worth the cost. Although I enjoy having it I am not certain that I would purchase another one. The 2 door Jeep Wrangler JL rides smoothly and quietly. The automatic engine shut off when stopped for long periods of time helps save gas and is super neat. The space in the back seat is tight but if seats are removed, it provides much more cargo space.

Keeps keep improving without ever losing that jeep quality that makes a jeep a jeep. I would love to test drive the diesel model. Sooner than later. I own the perfect daddy car. My entire family fits comfortably. There have never been any complaints. Jeep wave is part of our drive. Instead of punch bug, we play jeep.

I like that you can take the top and doors off of the car.
It is not the most comfortable drive on the highway, but I love my car and I love using it in the summer, spring and warm weather. It is a great car for the beach. My ac does not work as well as I want sometimes, but it is overall very comfortable and has apple carplay.

There's a hidden easter egg on the jeep and its different for a lot of them.
I have had no problems with the jeep wrangler, it is amazing and I love driving it everywhere from the beach to my job or just going to the store. I totally recommend buying the jeep because the design is sleek and better than any other cars I have driven.

Jeep is a fun and good SUV to have to go around town or off road fun!
I enjoy the height of the jeep. I like that the renegade package comes with leather seats and a manual 6 speed transmission. The hardtop is super easy to take off and put back on when desired. The downfall to jeep ownership of course is gas, uses a lot of gas. The ride is much smoother now and isn't as loud and bumpy as previous jeep models i've ridden in.

I love the turn radius, I can park in almost any parking space.
The turn radius is amazing, not top heavy at all, the ride is very smooth and accelerates speed smooth and fast. Personally I think it does really well on gas and I drive a lot! Fits up to 5 people, taking the top off is an easy process and can be a one man job as it only involves unclamping a couple clamps on the roof.

Jeep wranglers: an endless adventure.
I absolutely love my 2019 jeep wrangler jl. The color, bikini pearl, is beautiful and turns a lot of heads. I feel like I am going on an adventure every time I drive it, even if I am just going to the grocery store. The seats are comfortable, and I really like how the dash is set up (buttons, radio, etc). There’s plenty of cup holders and space. The hard top is easy to take off as are the doors, with little spaces to keep the bolts so you do not lose them. I will be a wrangler girl the rest of my life.

Great car! Reliable, affordable and is well deserved of a 5 star rating.
The car is reliable and is very comfortable to drive! While most jeeps drive like a truck, this drives like a car. The interior is well designed and spacious. I never run out of room when I am transporting multiple people or if I just came from the grocery store. I like to take this car on trips for that reason. The gas mileage is good for a car this size. I am usually around 22 miles per gallon.

Nice color selection for jeeps that stand out in the crowd.
Jeep sits high so good road visibility. Can make sharp corners. The 2-door is easy to park (in small spaces). High road clearance for off-road adventures. Can convert to open top easily. Did notice some of plastic handles seen on cheap side (one already broke). Gas mileage is nothing to write home about, though 4 cylinder is available at around 24 mpg.

Our jeep is the best vehicle for our family.
We love our jeep. Trim package is awesome. The seats are amazing. Plenty of clearance for off roading. The stock tires were great even though we changed them out to a larger size to get even a little more clearance there are a few things we would have liked to have had for the price. We are apple people so not having apple carplay was a downer. It also does not have a backup camera. Other than that, it is perfect.

Jeep wave! Love my jeep wrangler!
I love my jeep wrangler! It could be a bumpy/louder ride but that is what you get with a wrangler. Easy on/off roof. Comfy leather heated seats. GPS is awesome, can hook up your phone to google maps and it acts as the GPS. Great features to customize whatever you are looking for.

It is a white jeep wrangler unlimited sport with a 2.0 turbo engine.
I love my jeep, I haven't had another problems, other than a start/stop malfunction light coming home, but it has not done it very offer, there’s also a slight death wobble, but that is common in a jeep, the interior is absolutely beautiful. And when taking the doors and top off is a free feeling to drive.

Overall I am very pleased to be a jeep owner!
I love my jeep wrangler! I have had no problems with my jeep since I have bought it two years ago! I have leather seats in my jeep and they are so comfortable and durable. I would recommend getting floor mats for your vehicle so you can keep the inside of it looking nice! There’s so much room in the jeep wrangler! I usually have my two dogs in the car with me and they love it!

Love my jeep, get a hard top and jeep should address death wobble.
A jeep wrangler is a great vehicle for rural and urban driving. A wrangler is a lifestyle vehicle, it speaks of fun and independence. I highly recommend the hard top for urban situations, the hard top provides security for items in your vehicle. Wranglers have a steering problem called death wobble, this needs to be fixed by recall.

Good car that gets the job done!
No problems. Very reliable and very good! It handles going off road very well and does a good job of handling difficult trails. It drives well on the street and can accelerate pretty good and doing good things that I like. It gets about 20 miles to the gallon and is more fuel efficient on the highway. The air conditioning does really good and I like the screen and electric system.

I am a loyal jeep owner and will continue the loyalty for as long as possible!
It is an amazing vehicle, versatile for both commute and trips to the beach/off-roading. I haven't had a single issue with it since purchasing it at the beginning of the year and intend on sticking with the make and model for my next few vehicles. I love my jeep wrangler!

A daily driven off road machine.
In the 3rd quarter of 2018 jeep released its new wrangler model, the jl. Completely redesigned from exterior to interior. The otherwise rugged and ruff riding wrangler has been giving improved suspension to become a widely appealing SUV. The offroad capability remains unmatched with included safety features such as skid plates on every trim.

It has the perfect combination of cool and off road.
I love my 2019 jeep wrangler. Fav car I have ever owned. Drives smooth unlike other jeeps. The all black look is exactly what I wanted. I couldn’t be any happier with my car. I do recommend a jeep wrangler to future car buyer’s because of how reliable and cool the car is.

The touch screen technology inside is one of my favorite new features.
My car does not have any issues right now. It is very comfortable to drive longer distances and the stereo system is awesome along with other newer technologies. So far it has been very reliable and I have had no issues. Jeep has done a good job of making the wrangler more luxury.

Mediocre jeep explanation.
Everything is good. Love the car and has great mileage. Seats are very comfortable for kids and adults. Can't fit very many people. It's very easy to clean. Has a bunch of storage space in the trunk of the car. Fits a bunch of things. Radio isn't the best but is still in good condition.
accountCircle Antoinette P on January 16, 2021
My vehicle is so amazing. My vehicle is everything I have always wanted.
I love my vehicle but the only problem is that the motor will be very loud when I am about to drive, as far as reliability just gas money, of course the comfort it is fine and the features they're awesome. And not to mention that I have always wanted a jeep wrangler.

Wrangler death wobble & radio issues!
Some issues I have had with my car is the 'death wobble'. It typically happens in 2018 models and newer. Another ongoing issue with the car is when the radio requires an update on the system, if you have your phone plugged in the entire system will shut down.
accountCircle Mark C on January 14, 2021
I give it a 95 out of 100. The space inside is very small but close to perfect.
I think the biggest problem with the car is that it can be compact in the inside. When you have 3 boys and travel far it's very small especially in the back. I like how you can take out the outside parts and be a convertible. It's very easy to do. The latches are easy to open and easy to put back. It literally takes less than 30 minutes. It's very reliable. The gas mileage for being a big car is very good. I drive a lot and it doesn't waste gas surprisingly. The performance is good too. It doesn't drift or seem like its going to tip over.

Jeeps come with a lot of small details on them.
I love my jeep very much, except that if I was any older or had children I think this vehicle would be difficult to have considering the door spacing‘s in the back seats are very small the jeep at stock height sits higher so if I was older it might be more difficult to get in. The ride is not always the smoothest even with having a hard top.
