2018 Lexus NX Review: Very Dependable Luxury SUV With Low Maintenance Costs

Alex Showalter
Jul 28, 2023

The 2018 Lexus NX lasts around 300,000 miles with relatively minor wind noise and window regulator issues reported. At $26,800 to $36,970, it’s expensive, but worth it for one of the most reliable small luxury SUVs on the market.

likeFilled The Good
There are a lot of standard safety features, passenger room is great throughout the cabin and it is affordable to own long-term.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Cargo space is lower than some other SUVs, the touch pad for the infotainment system is tricky to use and the dash has some plastic.

The white with the red interior is super eye catching!
It's a smooth ride and I love it. I love all the features and now you are able to add apple play! The F-Sport is very nice with the red leather seats, which are cooling seats in the front. The steering wheel is heated, which is a great feature. The gas mileage isn't the greatest, but I get about 22-23 MPG depending on how hot it is.

Love my white Lexus nx with Caramel interior. Great value for a luxury vehicle.
Love the brown interior. White is not as bright as I would prefer. I would like more safety features. Stylish and a great value for a luxury car. This car is well made and I am so happy with my purchase. The service is great as well. I have never had a bad experience.

Fuel efficient for long road trips, comfortable, and easy drive.
We wanted a vehicle that had a great fuel efficiency for its size and the nx delivers on that criteria. The back seats recline, which has been a huge help during long road trips for people to sleep easier. The only complaint we have had about the nx is that the cargo space is a little smaller than similar vehicles (Acura rdx), but all the other features are great!
accountCircle Syd B
My red interior is my favorite.
I love everything about it. Drives smooth, I have never had a single issue and it is more than comfortable. I highly recommend this car to anyone that is wanting a reliable car that is nice and enjoyable to drive. I have plenty of room for passengers and even include trunk space.

Great car, not for everyone.
F sport styling, two tone red interior, really good safety features, fuel consumption depends on how you drive, decent storage, long distance driving on the f sport seats were actually comfortable, ride comfort is very good, perfect for a small family, compared to the competition I think this is your best bet. The nx has done really well in the snow for those who are looking for a good winter car, the heated and cooled seats are very nice as well. Cons: terrible infotainment system, we only use our phones GPS, a bit of torque steer, I would recommend the non f sport model for better comfort and more options, slight rattle on the side view mirrors, tight cabin, remote start features are limited.

Great service and long lasting cars.
Love this car. Decent gas mileage, the sport hugs the road. Perfect for a single active person. Back seats are small though so I’d size up to rx if you need regular backseat passenger space. Lexus makes great vehicles, long lasting & always had great service with them.

Appearance and safety top priority.
Good looking car interior and exterior. Feel very comfortable driving it. Travels easily on long trips with the help null of safety features. The crossover design allows me the freedom to feel young without looking silly.

Great for singleton, bad for small families/tall people.
It is very small. Not a good family vehicle, was great before I had a child but car seats are a pain to get in and there’s hardly room in the back for stroller storage. I love the drive though, very smooth ride sometimes I cannot even tell I am going 80 down the highway, I have got to catch myself. Great on gas and easy maintenance. Oh also if you are a bigger guy like my fiancé you are not going to be comfortable, he 6’ 4” and he hates driving/riding in my vehicle. He squished. If your 5’ 3” like me you are fine.

Although you can put regular gas in this car it will not run very well and you have to use premium gas
It will not lock if you leave your keys in it. The steel things behind the wheel are a real bother. You have to duck to get in.

The highlight about the car is how silent it is while driving it.
There are some problems with the car. First, the sensor for backing up shuts down later on and can never be fix. Secondly, it is hard using the maps. I wish the screen was touchscreen because it would be alot easier navigating. Lastly, the steering is very stiff. Everything else is fine.

What Do Critics Say About the Lexus NX?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Lexus NX offers a lot of great amenities and a supple ride for a luxury SUV, with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Lexus NX at 4.2/5, praising the great passenger room in the rear seats, but doesn’t like the distracting Remote Touch technology interface.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2018 NX a 4.5/5, enjoying the great luxury features, but owners don’t like the weaker engine than some competitors.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Lexus NX Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Lexus NX include excessive wind noise, the windows not rolling down, and a frozen rearview camera. Overall, these problems are relatively minor for a luxury SUV, leading to relatively low repair costs as the NX ages.

Excessive wind noise is the most widespread complaint from 2018 Lexus NX owners, showing up within the first 2,500 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a pinched or damaged bit of weather stripping on the door. Often the problem can be fixed for free, although if it’s torn it will need to be replaced. Changing out the gasket costs around $250.

The windows not rolling down is another problem reported by some 2018 NX owners at roughly 65,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a damaged window regulator or a worn out motor. Replacing the window regulator costs about $400, while a new window motor is an additional $350.

A frozen rearview camera has also shown up on some NX models in the first 1,000 miles of ownership. There are software updates available for the stereo system which improves the reliability of the camera system. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while some charge around $50 for labor.

There is only one recall on the 2018 Lexus NX 300, which is better than a lot of other luxury SUVs on the market. The recall is for the fuel pump which may fail, causing the engine to stall and affects many Lexus and Toyota vehicles. Lexus will replace the fuel pump on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2018 Lexus NX Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Lexus NX can last around 300,000 miles, which is much longer than other small luxury SUVs like the Mercedes GLA. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than many competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $483 per year.

As a used 2018 Lexus NX reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history owners should be prepared to replace the stabilizer bar links for $150, transfer case output shaft seal costing $300, along with the A/C refrigerant pressure switch which costs $550.

accountCircle Sandy N

It does not have a lot of power when you are trying to pass another car but does not bother me. The interior of the car is not as luxurious as other Lexus models or other similar cars.

accountCircle Kristen W

I am really satisfy to drive Lexus NX car right now. I don't think, I have any problem right now. easy to park, cause NX has sensor

accountCircle Eileen C

Yes the Lexus NX is very reliable. It is safe in all aspects and warns you right away if anything is off or wrong.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 8-inch display with a touchpad interface. Optional upgrades include a larger 10.3-inch screen and a premium sound system.

Standard safety technology is much better than other SUVs with the Lexus Safety System which has:

  • Pre-collision warning
  • Automatic braking system
  • Brake assist
  • Pedestrian detection system
  • Rearview camera
  • Lane keep assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Automatic high beams

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Surround-view parking camera
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Adaptive headlights

Is the 2018 Lexus NX a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Lexus NX is a good value since it offers a decent amount of luxury paired with high reliability ratings as it ages. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $26,800 to $36,970, making it less than a Porsche Macan or BMW X3. When new, the price range was $35,985 to $39,775. Depreciation is better than a lot of competitors, only losing about 6% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Lexus NX?

What Engines Come In the Lexus NX?

There’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the NX 300. This engine produces 235 horsepower, at up to 25 miles per gallon. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Performance is okay and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in around 7 seconds.

What Colors Does the Lexus NX Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Lexus NX?

The 2018 Lexus NX offers a high level of comfort that is a signature trait of the Lexus brand. Both front and rear seats are well-padded and supportive, guaranteeing a relaxed ride for all occupants. The front seats, in particular, are power-adjustable, providing an excellent opportunity for individual comfort customization. The rear seats offer ample legroom and headroom, even for taller passengers, making long-distance journeys a breeze.

Luxury extends to the materials used in the cabin as well. The NX comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery, though genuine leather is available. High-quality, soft-touch materials adorn the cabin, complementing the plush seating and adding to the overall comfort of the vehicle.

The ride quality in the 2018 Lexus NX is also praiseworthy. The suspension is designed to absorb most road imperfections, delivering a smooth and quiet ride. This compact SUV also boasts excellent sound insulation, keeping wind and road noise to a minimum.

How Much Storage Space Does the Lexus NX Have?

The 2018 Lexus NX provides a reasonable amount of storage space for a compact luxury SUV. The cargo capacity stands at 17.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats. To give you a better idea, this space can comfortably accommodate around four to five suitcases of varying sizes, or a weekly grocery haul for a small to medium-sized family.

If you need more storage room, the rear seats can be folded down to increase the cargo capacity. Once folded, the storage space expands to a substantial 54.6 cubic feet. This allows for larger items to be carried with ease, such as a bicycle, a small piece of furniture, or even a medium-sized flat-screen TV.

While the Lexus NX does not boast the largest cargo area in its class, it still provides a practical amount of space for everyday items and occasional bulky cargo. Additionally, its carefully engineered design provides easy loading and unloading of items, making it an excellent choice for those who value convenience and practicality.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Lexus NX was introduced for the 2015 model year.

2015: First model year for the new Lexus NX, which is a smaller and more budget-conscious SUV added to the Lexus lineup.

2016: Smartphone features added with Lexus Enform.

2017: Scout GPS Link navigation standard on all models with smartphone connectivity.

2018: Renamed to NX300, Safety System+ standard on all models, larger infotainment screen.

2019: No changes from other years.

2020: More driver safety features added, Android Auto smartphone features, and an optional Mark Levinson stereo system.

2021: Blind-spot monitoring and an auto-dimming rearview mirror are now standard on all models.

How Does the Lexus NX Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Lexus NX is a great compact luxury SUV since it offers decent features, advanced technology, and excellent long-term reliability ratings.

The Lexus RX is a larger SUV from Lexus which costs about $5,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Lexus RX, while the Lexus NX has a sportier driving experience with more responsive steering. We recommend the Lexus RX for most shoppers since the extra room is worth the money, although both are very good choices worth testing to see which you prefer.

The Acura RDX is another small luxury SUV which is about $2,000 less. Performance is better in the Acura RDX since it has a stronger engine, while the Lexus NX comes standard with more safety technology. We recommend the Lexus NX for most buyers since it’s a little more advanced, although both are excellent SUVs.

Blindspot in the front right hood of the car. I love the interior - comfortable and luxe. The reclining seats in the back are a game changer!
The reason I purchased the nx300h was because I wanted a hybrid, but I did not want a small car like a Prius. When I test drove the nx300h I felt safe. I loved all the safety features, especially the one where the side mirrors light up when a car is in your blind spot and it beeps if you put your blinker on and a car is in the blind spot. I think it is cool that there is an option for the steering wheel to vibrate when you go over a solid line, but I keep mine off when I am driving around town because it can get annoying if you forget once or twice to put your blinker on. Otherwise, I really love the car’s safety features all around. I like having a camera when I back up, especially in my Lexus because it beeps when something is close behind it and it also beeps when you pull into a spot and are getting too close to something in front of it. The size is great, the color is great (I got black exterior and red interior). I wish the a/c was just a bit better for the back seat. However I love that the back seats recline! This was a huge deal for my parents. They love that it is so comfortable in the back seat and they do not have to sit just straight up during a long car ride. Lastly, this car drives smooth and great. It is quiet which is a bonus and the gas mileage is one of the best, but not better than a Honda civic which was a bit disappointing.
accountCircle Greg P on January 25, 2021

I purchased this car because it has the latest safety features. I have only had the car about six months, so I cannot speak to how reliable it is because it is still brand new. One feature I wasn't expecting was the fact of the headlights go from regular to bright when I am on a darker area. It a nx300 so it is slightly smaller, which makes it easier to park.

Love the autumn breeze in Florida.
The thing I like most is the look of the car especially the front grill. It rides very smoothly. The front seats are comfortable. However the middle seat in the second row is very stiff and uncomfortable. Lexus should find a way to keep out the road noise for a more quiet ride. I have only had the car for four months. It has been extremely reliable so far. The technology is a bit quirky especially the navigation system and screen. The audio control is a bit difficult to control when driving since the controls are in the form of a mini laptop mouse. It is difficult to keep your eyes on the road and the mouse at the same time. I also love the color of the car--autumn breeze. It is quite unique. I have received many compliments. The cream leather interior and wood detail give it a luxurious look. The cargo space is fair. It could use a bit more room for cargo especially when travelling as a family and trying to fit several large suitcases in the back. The sun visors are a bit small.

The 2018 Lexus nx300 f-sport is stunning but average in class.
I have the f-sport trim which aesthetically 10 x better looking than the normal trim in my opinion. It is not a performance car by any means and gas mileage is not best in class. The interior feels luxury, with an extremely quiet cabin - my wife falls asleep immediately. In my 6 months of leasing, I have had zero issues. One huge pitfall is that there is no apple or android carplay - the navigation app is horrible, not google maps or wade.

Best mini SUV with the best mpg!
This is the most comfortable car! I drive for work and it has a lumbar support for the drivers side that I love and helps with lower back problems. I love that it does not feel huge either. It is a big, small car with enough room for passengers or anything from the store. Also it feels safe and protective without feeling like I am driving a boat. It drives like a little car but I have so much room! What I love the most though is that I get the best miles/gallon! I have always had sedans and I get usually 25-26 mpg with my nx300! If I am on the highway, I can get up to 40! I was afraid of upsizing because of gas and even considered a hybrid just for gas mileage, but now I get the best of both worlds!

Very luxurious but bad turning radius.
The car has a very comfortable drive and luxurious features. I like the technology included as well as the safety features. Sometimes the scroll pad is hard to use and the interface is not intuitive. The biggest problem I have is the turning radius of the car. It is very difficult to make sharp turns or u turns.

Appearance and safety top priority.
Good looking car interior and exterior. Feel very comfortable driving it. Travels easily on long trips with the help null of safety features. The crossover design allows me the freedom to feel young without looking silly.

It has fantastic navigation and parking camera system.
Problems happen during winter when it snows. It has smooth performance and very good comfort. I wish it was more stylish. The tires need to be better and have to be changes constantly. It has good speed and good navigation system. It would also be nice to have more color range.

Loving the style, size and sound.
Love the style and size of the car and the updated technology. The car very comfortably seats five and is a good size to move furniture. The tech is fun and it has great sounding Audio throughout. However, I had a Kia Soul rental car this past weekend and thought its driver seat was way more comfortable than my own. Aside from these, I do also appreciate the tech that sensors driving lanes and vehicles ahead.

My red interior is my favorite.
I love everything about it. Drives smooth, I have never had a single issue and it is more than comfortable. I highly recommend this car to anyone that is wanting a reliable car that is nice and enjoyable to drive. I have plenty of room for passengers and even include trunk space.

Overall, I am happy and pleased with my vehicle.
My vehicle pulls to the right and has from day one. It also does not have a holder/container for sunglasses. The navigation screen/system does not retract, it remains sticking up at all times. I like the performance, reliability and all of the comfort features.

An interesting detail is the car safety features.
I have zero problems with the car. If I am too close to a car in front or behind me it beeps, if I am not breaking when there is a stopped car in front of me the car will take over and brake itself. My side mirrors flash of there is a car on the side of mine so I know not to switch lanes yet. All of these things make me feel very safe with my son in the car. The seats are very comfortable. I love the sunroof. Perfect amount of trunk space. We opted for the car starter and we can start the car from our phones anywhere we are. We can also lock, unlock, open the trunk, and find the vehicle from our phones.

Sporty, luxurious and perfect!
I love my Lexus NX300 F Sport! When my fiance and I found out we were going to be first time parents, we knew that we had to find a reliable, safe family vehicle. We were blown away by the Lexus NX. It's sporty and compact, with enough space for my family to fit comfortably with a car seat and stroller. We chose the F Sport trim level, so it has plenty of power to get us around town. The interior accents are really thoughtful and practical for all driver types. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for something luxurious, yet fun and stylish!
