2019 Lexus RX Review: Dependable Midsize SUV With Reasonable Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Jan 26, 2023

The 2019 Lexus RX can last around 300,000 miles with only minor fuel pump and paint issues reported. At $31,990 to $49,998, it’s expensive, but worth the money for one of the most reliable midsize luxury SUVs on the market.

The cabin offers outstanding quality for the price, there are a lot of safety features and long-term reliability is great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The F-Sport model is not very comfortable, there’s still no Apple CarPlay and the tech system is distracting.

Is the 2019 Lexus RX a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2019 is a great year for the Lexus RX since it’s extremely reliable with a luxurious cabin. Owner reviews praise the dependable engines, smooth suspension, along with the lower ownership costs as it ages.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 9/10 – Interior materials are very high-quality for a midsize SUV, seating is supportive throughout the cabin, although there’s not much cargo space.

  • Performance 8/10 – Performance is good from the standard V6 engine, although it’s not the most agile or fun SUV to drive.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2019 RX is very safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s standard automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, along with a rearview camera. Optional upgrades include a head-up display.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 23 MPG, giving 441 miles of range out of the 19.2 gallon tank. Gas costs are $14 cheaper than average at $194 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2019 Lexus RX is more expensive than other SUVs, yet high reliability ratings and a nice interior make it a great value.

My Lexus is the best thing to ever happen to me.
I love my vehicle it is easy to drive, and comes with so many safety features! I also love how dependable and conformable it is, not to mention how much room there is for other passengers. The interior is amazing, and I absolutely love all of the new things included with the car like the sos button that can help you when in need by just clicking a simple button.

Lexus rx350 feedback after 1 year.
I really enjoy my car which performs really well with very low cost on gasoline. The interior is beautiful and the seats are very comfortable too. It also needs little maintenance, which is affordable to own. I enjoy Lexus so far and I would recommend this car.

2019 RX350 is best car we ever had and have had a few.
It ride like dream and has power. You find that it handles like big car. A lot space in rear. Gas mileage is very good.

Lexus is reliable and advanced.
The car is a smooth ride, it has a nice quiet engine and does not have problems with jerking. As well, it has comfortable seating, the technology available, the heater and air conditioner are reliable and powerful. This is a powerful vehicle that will require very little to maintain.

I love most of the features on my rx 450.
I love every feature in this car. My only complaint is that there are only 2 cup holders in front and the little pocket to put phone is not big enough for plus phones. I love all of the automatic settings like parking brake and bright lights. I also love the hybrid that I can sport mode and I can econ mode.

I have had no problems with my car. I love the quietness and smooth ride. The body is very strong and looks sleek and modern. This is my 3rd Lexus and will continue buying them forever. When you see the luxurious interior you know you are riding in luxury. The extra features are also a benefit.

I love the holograph on the windshield. It is amazing and much safer.
I do not have any issues with my rx350 other than the “joystick” thing. I am not sure what it is called, but it is used to navigate the screen. It is not the easiest to use and I am often wasting time going back and forth because of how sensitive it is. I think the newer models have a touch pad, though.

Water leak
Brand new 2019 Lexus Rx 350, bought 3 months ago, paddles of water on the front passenger floor every time it rains. Lexus refuses to fix it under the warranty because it “caused by spiders webbings in the a/c drainage”. A/c is completely off and never used since the summer’s over. Noticed the leak with the first rain in October. Got stuck with this problem. Their repair price is about $7000

Does not have the past Lexus quality’s. Many other less expensive SUVs are just as nice. Very complicated to operate controls for heat, radio, and GPS.

Lexus rx 350 has grown on me but do I really need this luxury?
I think the Lexus is overrated although it has excellent safety features I believe most automakers are equivalent at this time. There are features that I enjoyed much more in my high end Nissan product. Steering wheel heat, sound system, vehicle speed pickup as well as heaviness of the vehicle. Rx is beautiful & classic and has a very good reputation but it is very pricey & in this day & age people need affordable options. It is also not the most comfortable interior on long rides & the air conditioned seats are extremely loud. Just small luxuries that can cause problems that we probably could live without to begin with in the long run.

What Do Critics Say About the Lexus RX?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Lexus RX offers a comfortable and luxurious driving experience with very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the RX at 3.8/5, praising the smooth standard suspension, but dislikes the boring driving experience.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Lexus RX a 4.2/5, enjoying the extremely quiet cabin, but owners don’t like the tight third row on the long-wheelbase model.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Lexus RX Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Lexus RX include the engine stalling, some paint issues, as well as forward collision avoidance system failures. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to other luxury SUVs on the market from the same year.

The engine stalling has been reported on some 2019 Lexus RX models in the first 10,000 miles. There’s a recall on the fuel pump which causes the engine to lose fuel pressure and stall. Lexus will replace the fuel pump for free, although parts are limited so people have reported it taking several weeks to get a new pump installed.

Paint quality issues have been mentioned on the 2019 Lexus RX in the first 5,000 miles as well. Issues with the paint curing, especially on the roof, have been seen. The only way to fix the problem is by repainting the affected areas, at a cost of around $1,000 per panel.

Forward collision avoidance system failures are another issue that 2019 RX owners have encountered in the first 15,000 miles. The problem is caused by a damaged front sensor. Replacing the sensor assembly costs roughly $500, depending on local labor rates.

There are three recalls on the 2019 Lexus RX, which is similar to other midsize SUVs from the same year. The most serious two recalls cover the fuel pump, which Lexus will replace for free. The third recall is for a transportation hook which may damage a fuel filler pipe and Lexus will remove the hook for free.

How Long Will the 2019 Lexus RX Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Lexus RX can last around 300,000 miles, which is much longer than other luxury SUVs like the Mercedes GLE. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than many other high-end SUVs as well, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $735 per year.

As a used 2019 Lexus RX reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the thermostat for $600, wheel hub costing $1,100, as well as the headlamp switch which costs $350.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good in the 2019 Lexus RX with a standard 8-inch display screen. Optional upgrades include a larger 12.3-inch display. Annoyingly, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still not offered on the 2019 RX.

Safety technology is great for a midsize luxury SUV with standard driver assistance features including forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, along with a rearview camera.

Optional advanced safety features include

blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, head-up display, surround-view parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, as well as adaptive headlights.

Is the 2019 Lexus RX a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Lexus RX is a fantastic value for a very dependable entry-level luxury midsize SUV. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $31,990 to $49,998, making it more than a Toyota Highlander or BMW X5. When new, the price range was $43,820 to $54,435. Depreciation is similar to other SUVs, losing about 8% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Lexus RX?

There are two main models of the 2019 Lexus RX offered including the Base and the RX F-Sport model. There’s also a hybrid RX 450h model covered in another review which adds electric motors. The Lexus RX is also offered with standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. It’s also offered with a standard wheelbase or a long wheelbase which offers a third row.

Base is the entry-level model with:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Automatic LED Headlights
  • Rear Privacy Glass
  • Power Liftgate
  • Keyless Ignition and Entry

  • Power-Adjustable Front Seats
  • 40/20/40-Split Rear Seat
  • Rear Cargo Cover
  • Rearview Camera

What Engines Come In the Lexus RX?

The engine found in the 2019 Lexus RX is a reasonably strong 3.5L V6 which makes 295 horsepower at up to 23 MPG. It’s paired with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. Performance is good, taking 6.9 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Lexus RX Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Lexus RX?

The 2019 Lexus RX is a comfortable midsize SUV, with a smooth ride, supportive seats, room for up to seven passengers, and a quiet cabin. The standard seats are quite comfortable, with ample padding and good support.

The available heated and ventilated front seats offer additional comfort. The standard infotainment system is easy to use, and the materials used throughout the cabin are of high quality. The Lexus RX’s noise insulation is great and the cabin is very quiet, even at high speeds.

How Much Storage Space Does the Lexus RX Have?

The 2019 Lexus RX 350 has a cargo capacity of 18.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and 56.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down which is slightly less than a lot of other midsize SUVs on the market.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fourth generation of the Lexus RX was introduced for the 2016 model year, and will be replaced by the fifth generation in 2023.

2015: Standard rearview camera, 7-inch display, and LED headlights.

2016: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new styling, engines, and technology.

2017: F-sport models offered, there’s also more standard safety equipment available.

2018: No major changes.

2019: Lexus Enform Connect smartphone applications added.

2020: Upgraded suspension, small exterior styling changes, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto available.

2021: Wireless smartphone charging available, standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

How Does the Lexus RX Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Lexus RX is one of the best midsize SUVs on the market, combining a lot of luxury features with outstanding long-term reliability ratings as it ages.

The Lexus GX is a larger SUV made by Lexus which costs around $8,000 more. Off-road performance is better in the Lexus GX, while the Lexus RX has more up-to-date technology. For most people, we recommend the Lexus RX, unless you know you’ll be hitting the trails, then a GX is better.

The

Acura MDX is another midsize luxury SUV available for about $1,500 less. Passenger room is a bit better in the Acura MDX, while the Lexus RX has more advanced safety technology available. We recommend the Lexus RX since it’s a nicer overall SUV, although both are very good choices worth testing out.

The brakes and rotors.
Only problem is the brake and rotor wear. The rotors are warping on the front. I have REPLACED the front rotors 3 times in 1 year. I just replaced the rotors on the front and drove from Ky.to Georgia and you can hear grinding from the brakes.

I have not had any problems (with the exception of one factory recall for replacement part). I have also had two flat tires caused by nails or screws in one if the tires. Car handles well. I had an rx450 hybrid before the rx 350. I liked that vehicle better because it got much better mileage.

Test drove them all. This car had the best ride. Considered buying a Audi Q7 and BMW X5. This is the only car in it’s class that uses regular unleaded gas. All the others require high test. Do not want the extra cost.

High quality and comfort in SUV.
High confidence in the Lexus brand and its long lasting reputation for quality. The ride feels quite comfortable and feels luxe too. GPS software could be a bit faster and more user friendly on the dashboard, it seems this has had very slight improvement over the prior rx 350 model.

Excellent SUV - will buy again.
It is a great sized SUV. Not too big to where it is hard to handle or park, but plenty big enough to comfortably fit and car seat, golf clubs, groceries, etc. The ride is incredibly smooth, as are all Lexus vehicles, and the f-sport mode comes in handy more than I expected. We'll likely get another one when this lease is up.

It is for people who are seeking comfort. HUD and 360-degree view is very useful.
Lexus rx series is generally for people who are looking for comfort. It has plenty of leg rooms and is wide for people to sit in. The seat belt feels like nothing, you do not feel like you have seatbelt on until there is a harsh break or something. You do not feel much bumps on a bumpy road. You also do not really feel the push when you speed up the vehicle such as when going on to freeways (that might be some people’s preference). Getting head up display is very useful. With personal referenced setting, you'll be able to see your current speed without moving your sight away from the road. GPS could be pretty helpful if you do not have a smartphone or when your smartphone lost signal. With GPS and HUD combined, you'll also be able to see the speed limit for the current road. HUD also allows you to have a vibration on the steering wheel when you are driving on the line, which may be a safety feature when you are falling asleep when driving. The 360-degree view around the vehicle is also very useful. It allows you to check your surroundings to see if it is safe (no kids or such) in your blind spots. The backup camera is also very useful. I do not think the full moon roof is that useful, because you rarely would use it. During summertime, it is too hot. The place where it is designed to store phone is way too small to fit a phone in.

Comfort and beauty in a luxury vehicle.
The drive is smooth, comfortable and fast. It moves very quietly but it is strong enough. It comfortably fits three children in the back seat. In the front seat it is easy to move around. The trunk is big enough for strollers and carry around other items that we need.

Good for safety but a bit big:).
I really like the safety features that the car includes, such as the warning sounds and lights. The acceleration and braking are also really smooth, and the car itself looks very good! One drawback is the size, which makes it hard to park in smaller spots, but I find that the size adds to the car's safety!

2019 Lexus rx 350 its surprising lag in digital capabilities.

My 6th RX. First 4 350’s, last 2 450h F Sport. All special ordered with every option available. Best ever and getting better! Great performance, ride comfort, 30-31 MPG!! Gorgeous, elegant Ultra White/red @ black panoramic roof car looks intimidating to drivers seeing it coming up from their rear view mirrors.

Amazing and luxurious car.
So far I Haven't had any type of issues with this car. Excellent performance all around. The car is great in gas, keeps you very comfortable and no issues in the year I have it. The price tag is a bit hefty but you are getting a car that will last a lifetime.

Comfortable and reliable.
Great mileage especially on the highway. Idles really quietly, the a/c system is always satisfying, and the cooled seats help keep me comfortable on a long drive or a hot day. The smooth feeling of the steering wheel allows for a more natural experience as if the wheel is a part of your body.

Best car I ever bought! Worth every $.
The brakes have a spongy tissue on top of the gas pedal not being super firm. However, the car is fantastic all around. The suspension is super stable and the car handles very well around curves. The electronics are very responsive and the power steering is fantastic. I would recommend driving in sport mode to increase the effectiveness of all the cars features including horsepower.

Overall it is a very comfortable way to go around.
Car is very smooth and very quiet, it can be loud if you want it to be. Very easy to drive and very comfortable in the front and in the back. Cruise control and steering assists work well. Maintenance is not bad overall, but it does come up quite often. Boot space is good if you do not use the third row and is decent if you do use it.

Sporty car with less luxury than expected.
I love the sporty look of the car. The functionality is nice with the four doors and the third row. My middle row has two seats that both contain car seats and we usually leave the third row down to increase space for cargo in the back. It has a very classy interior but I feel that I can never get comfortable with the temperature settings. The remote start function is also frustrating because it turns the car off when you open a door so I cannot load the car with it running.

Luxury crossover SUV: Lexus attractive value and reputation for reliability.
The 2019 Lexus rx 350 is without a doubt one of the most attractive options for a full luxury crossover SUV. The rx's appeal is due in part to that wide variety of settings, but also to its long list of standard features, such as adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, and leather upholstery. There are also plenty of high-end options to choose from, such as a 12.3-inch center screen, 15-speaker stereo, and panoramic sunroof.
