2014 Mazda3 Review: Dependable, Comfortable & Upscale Compact Car

Alex Showalter
Sep 27, 2022

The 2014 Mazda3 lasts around 250,000 miles with only minor brake and touchscreen issues. At $10,425 to $14,575, it’s a great value for a reliable compact car with a high-quality interior.

likeFilled The Good
Very upscale interior for the money, steering feels sportier than average and the hatchback is practical.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Cargo space in the sedan’s trunk is smaller than average, both engine options are noisy and the suspension is overly firm.

Is the 2014 Mazda3 a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2014 is a great year for the Mazda3, a combination of dependable motors and good safety features, it earns a high overall rating. Owner reviews praise the efficient engines, stereo system, and luxury materials.

  • Safety 9/10 – The Mazda3 gets a perfect 5-star overall rating in all government crash tests. Optional safety features include collision warning, blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, and collision mitigation with automatic braking.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is excellent at up to 34 MPG, giving 445 miles of range from the 13.2 gallon tank. Gas prices are $58 cheaper than average, at $143 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – A combination of low prices and average ownership costs make the Mazda3 a great long term value if you can find one with under 100,000 miles.

Mazda3's are all you need in one.
I love my Mazda3! The greatest thing is the gas mileage. The newer Mazda 3's are much bigger than the older ones. I wish it had a little more technology, but I do just have the basic model. Very comfortable seats, easy to clean. Very reliable. I keep up on my upkeep and haven't had any other issues. I really enjoy my Mazda and will continue to purchase vehicles from them.

Very great gas mileage, perfect for long drives.
My Mazda 3 I grand touring is the best car I own. This car gets great gas mileage and is perfect for long trips which I happen to make often. I have never had any issues with this car and it has always been very reliable. This car has a great turning radius as well. Along with this, the speaker system and navigation is very user friendly and easy to use. It works perfectly with your smartphone.

Gas mileage and is up to date in style.
It is a very reliable car, the performance is very safe and I get very good gas mileage. If you keep it up to date it will last you very long time. Keep the tires and oil change often and that will help you keep the car for a long time. The style is still up to date.

My Mazda 3 has been the best investment in my life.
I love my Mazda 3. I have had my car for over 2 years now and have yet to have a problem mechanically with this car. I have been able to drive cross country in my car with no problems. I have driven from Illinois to New York to Niagara Falls and back to Illinois. The following year we drove from Illinois to Colorado, Nevada, all along the coast of California and back to Illinois. I feel safe driving myself, my husband and my children in this car. It is also very spacious in the car and in the trunk. As previously stated we did drive cross country and had more than enough room for all the supplies. The color of my car is also very beautiful compared to other reds. It is not a dull red and stands out amongst the rest. I was in an incident where someone had side swiped my car and I had no problems as to getting it fixed and looking brand new. I cannot speak highly enough and if had to purchase another car it would most likely be the same.

Great car with features I love using.
This car is packed with features and is very reliable. I have the hatchback I-touring, and it is a good looking car. Very comfortable for long trips, good amount of interior room, fold down back seats, Bose sound system, sport mode, and many other popular features. I love this car.

Love my mazda3! Best car ever!
It has been a really great car, I have had no issues in the two years I have owned it. It is comfortable and reliable. I love this car and would definitely recommend to my friends. The only thing I wish it had was a backup camera, but later models have that. All in all, it is a great car.

Reliable and fun to drive!
I love my Mazda 3. It is fun and comfortable to drive. I have driven it on small and long trips and on my hour and a half daily commute with no issues. We have put on over 130k miles and it is still going strong. It gets great gas mileage while still being responsive and fun to drive.

Mazda 3 real review: good for teens, not for adults.
Car is sporty but lacks comfort and style. Seats are small and cramped. No real storage. Tan seating is very hard to clean. Great gas mileage. Issues with tires. Needs frequent maintenance. Good first vehicle but not recommended for adults. 30 highway miles to the gallon.

Do not buy if you live where it snows.
Terrible in snow, would not recommend in northern states. Very rigid ride. Comfortable interior. I am very unlikely to purchase another Mazda. Customer service has been awful and I am more likely to look for vehicles known for handling seasonal weather better.
accountCircle alyxandra C
Poor performance, gears stick, but the service package is nice.
It has a hard time switching between gear 1 and 2. The ac sometimes does not work. The seats are supposed to fold down and they do not. The serpentine belt is hard to reach. The truck is weird. I like the general look of the car but it does not perform has said.

An interesting detail of my car is the push start.
I really enjoy the mileage I get in my car. I just would not recommend it as a family car. Maybe with just one kid, it's okay. But since having our second child, the space is so cramped, and super uncomfortable. When my fiancé sits in it, or his friends sit in the car they look monstrous in the vehicle.
accountCircle Anna G
It's very reliable, but slow. The rest you can tell when you look at it.
Like the look outside and built in navigation. Quality of the finishes inside is very nice. Dislike the acceleration. The car is very slow if you want to pass another car or do another maneuver that requires fast acceleration.

Good, reliable car on a budget.
Car is very reliable. Haven't had to repair it at all apart from normal maintenance. I have a very simple model so it does not have a lot of features. It has great gas mileage but it is very small and can feel cramped at times. Not ideal for a family but great if you commute long for work.

Mazda 3 close to a sports car with four doors.
Comfortable front seats, good gas mileage, easy to control panel, nice ride, decent pick up, build in GPS and Bluetooth, good trunk capacity and cargo net, better mpg than I thought. Some issues early on with the sunroof and instrument panel. Nothing major. 55,000 miles, 4 years, and few problems.

Mazda 3 is a reliable car.
Brakes seem to wear out quickly, and there is a lot of road noise, but I really like the visual display and the ability to navigate it either by touch or through controls near the gear shift. It is a comfortable car to drive, and has good safety features like blind-spot monitoring and a rear-view camera.

What Do Critics Say About the Mazda3?

  • Consumer Reports says the Mazda3 combines sportiness and efficiency with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Mazda3 4.4/5, praising the responsive steering, although they don’t like the noisy engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Mazda3 a 4.5/5 enjoying the new technology features, but owners don’t like the small rear seats.

What Common Problems Does the 2014 Mazda3 Have?

The common problems found on the 2014 Mazda3 include premature brake wear, touchscreen failures, and rusting on the underbody. Overall, these problems are minor compared to other compact cars from 2014 with average repair costs.

Premature brake wear is a complaint from owners at around 35,000 miles. Stock brake pads tend to wear out quicker than on some other cars. Replacing the pads costs around $150, although if you need new rotors that’s an additional $400. Some aftermarket pads and rotors last longer than the stock parts as well.

Touchscreen failures are reported by some owners in the first 50,000 miles. First the touch screen features stop working, then the screen stops turning on entirely. Changing out the screen for a new one costs $800 to $1,200 depending on local labor rates.

Underbody rust is another issue according to owners in the first 25,000 miles. There are a lot of steel components used on the drivetrain of the Mazda3 which rust out if they’re exposed to a lot of snow and salt. Some owners get an undercoating done to help prevent rust from forming in the first place for about $500.

There are 3 recalls, and nearly all of them are serious compared to other compact cars from 2014. The most urgent recall is for a fuel leak which could result in a fire. Mazda will replace the fuel tank on affected models. Other recalls cover the alternator, which can wear out, along with the parking brake actuators which corrode.

How Long Will the 2014 Mazda3 Last?

A well-maintained 2014 Mazda3 should last around 250,000 miles, which is only slightly shorter than the highly-rated Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other compact cars, according to data from Repair Pal, at $440 per year.

Since many used 2014 Mazda3 models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace items including the water pump for $550, horn relay costing around $60, and the power seat motor which costs about $350.

accountCircle Hillary B

Yes, I have not had any issues with my car other than the seat showing signs of wear. The screen is beginning to looks worn because of the hot sun and cold winters.

accountCircle Kierra P

One of the initial manufacturer pieces like the starter or ignition or something had a recall on it for performing poorly in cold weather.

accountCircle Dominique F

I believe the Mazda is a very reliable car. I have had my car for months and have not had any problems.

accountCircle Elizabeth V

I only have one problem with the vehicle. I believe it is because I brought it from one previous owner. I was going through break fluid more quickly than any usual vehicle would. However, besides this one small issue I do not have any other problems with the vehicle.

accountCircle Abby W

Yes, it has been very reliable thus far. So far zero problems. It notifies me immediately whenever there is an sort of maintenance action needed.

accountCircle Ritchie L

It is a very reliable car. I haven't had any problems with it so far & it’s 5 years old! I am sure that it will last even longer.

accountCircle Pip P

Yes, it is very reliable. I have had my older 2007 Mazda 6 for almost 15 year with minimal expenses or problems.

accountCircle Michelle U

I think that it is extremely reliable. The only problem I have had would be the touch screen radio system malfunctioning but the car itself is great.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the Mazda3 with an available 7-inch touchscreen stereo system. The safety technology is excellent with optional blind spot monitoring, rearview camera, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic braking at low speeds.

Is the 2014 Mazda3 a Good Value?

Yes, the 2014 Mazda3 is a good value since they have relatively low ownership costs. Blue book prices range from $10,425 to $14,575, making it more expensive than a Honda Civic or VW Jetta. When new, the price range was $16,945 to $24,595. Depreciation is similar to average, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Mazda3?

  • The base engine is an average 2.0L 4-cylinder which makes 155 horsepower and gets up to 34 MPG.
  • An available upgrade is the stronger 2.5L 4-cylinder which generates 184 horsepower and gets up to 32 MPG. Performance is slower than average, taking 8.1 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Mazda3 Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Mazda3?

The 2014 Mazda3 is very comfortable with higher quality materials than other compact cars available in the same price range. There’s room for up to 5 people, and the seats are supportive, yet soft.

Passenger room is great in both the sedan and hatchback models with enough leg room to fit taller adults in the back seats.

How Much Storage Space Does the Mazda3 Have?

Cargo space is lower than average in the sedan with enough room for 3-4 suitcases. The hatchback has a decent amount of space with room for 5-6 suitcases behind the seats, and over 10 with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Mazda3 was introduced in 2014, which was replaced by the fourth generation in 2019.

2012: New 2.0L 4-cylinder engine added, and minor exterior styling changes.

2013: Larger navigation screen, and USB audio input added.

2014: Fully redesigned for third generation with new engines and electronics.

2015: Manual transmission added to 2.5L engine.

2016: SV model discontinued, rearview camera added as standard.

2017: Minor front & rear bumper updates, new steering wheel, updated dashboard.

How Does the Mazda3 Compare to the Competition?

The Mazda3 ranks among the best compact cars from 2014, offering dependable engines and a more upscale interior than its competitors.

The Mazda6 is another sedan built by Mazda which costs about $1,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Mazda6 since it’s a larger sedan, but the Mazda3 has more responsive steering. We recommend the Mazda3 for most people since ownership costs are slightly lower.

The Honda Civic is another competitor in the same price range. Performance is better in the Honda Civic, but the Mazda3 has a much nicer interior for the money. We recommend the Honda Civic since ownership costs are slightly lower, but you can’t go wrong with either long-lasting compact car.

My Mazda is very reliable and I feel very safe driving my infant around. It is super comfy and has a sporty look to it! I really like the red trim around the seats and the steering wheel! I have not had any major problems with my car. One of my favorite features of the Mazda 3 is the Bluetooth connection.

Good reliable car. Gets good gas mileage. Little highway noise but only at high speeds, above 70 mph. I own the basic model so no bells and whistles but can be upgraded. Good sound system and CD player is nice and hidden. Overall a good car and a good value.

Love at first sight, but lessens over the years.
I fell in love with my car when I bought it, but over the years my love has lessened. The driver side panel causes a huge blind spot. The Bluetooth is unreliable. You cannot play music through Bluetooth if phone is plugged into USB when car starts. Other charger died and does not work.

Reliable, never breaks down.
My vehicle is 6 years old and I have had no issues with it at all. It has always started up, it runs smooth and handles well. It is comfortable to drive and gives me the power I need when I need extra get up. My car has never broken down and has only needed a new battery only within the past year. The synthetic oil it takes also provides good efficiency for the vehicle. Overall I feel that the purchase of my car was a great choice and I will be buying my next car as a similar model and brand.

Comfortable and good gas mileage, but small electrical problems.
The car is very comfortable to drive and affordable to gas up and maintain. It has a good amount of power for a small car. The only problem that I have had with it seems to be related to the backup camera and to the navigation system. Once in a while the backup camera will fail to turn on, or it will turn on and the picture will be distorted. The navigation problem has started recently, where if I have that screen selected when driving, it will start randomly beeping when I am going less than about 10 mph and when I am stopped. Other than those problems with electronics, I am very happy with the car.

2014 mazda3 hatchback i Sport.
Great city car. Good gas mileage, no mechanical issues to date, and comfortable for two people for longer car rides. The cargo area is a good size for the size of the vehicle. I like the sport model compared to the touring model because it feels more powerful while getting better gas mileage. I chose the car because it had the best safety ratings for the category in 2014.

I have a 2014. I have had no issues besides regular maintenance like oil changes. It is a very reliable vehicle so far. 40,000 miles. I have always had BMWs in the past. So compared to a luxury car, it is disappointing in the way it handles and drives. But honestly you cannot compare a Mazda 3 to a BMW. It is not fair. Really, the Mazda is comfortable and reliable. Very affordable. It is a great option.

The mazda3 hatchback has been the perfect car for me.
The mazda3 great car for the price I got it. The mpg is good with an average of 30 mpg. The hatchback functionality has helped me out on countless occasions with the extra room and utility it provides. This has been used for helping others when moving, from putting a bike in the car (meaning no bike rack necessary), to have a place nap and recharge when going on a long road trip (I am 6'1' and cant lay down completely in the back).

Great little ride for the money.
I really like my car. Haven't had any significant issues since I got it. It is not as fast or powerful as I would like, but it keeps me out of trouble. One of the main reasons I got it, besides the excellent price, was the standard Bluetooth connection. A lot of key troubles. Sometimes the key fob does not work. A light will come on in the car saying that the key is not in the vehicle. Also when I try to unlock and lock the door it takes a few clicks until it registers. The steering wheel is starting to peel but that is an easy repair. The parts are very inexpensive which I love. I really like our Mazda 3. This car drives smoothly and hasn't needed any major repairs since we purchased it. The Mazda is comfortable enough, but I think a little more legroom in the back seat would be an absolute plus for our next purchase.

The great features of the 2014 Mazda 3 I touring skyactiv hatchback.
Could use a little more speed and power, but very smooth riding and pretty roomy. My car has a wonderful radio dock that is not too big or bulky but unique compared to the screens in the dash. I also love the blind spot sensors on the mirrors as it makes it easier to change lanes.

I have had it for four years and I have never experienced a problem!
I really do not have any issues with my vehicle. I absolutely love it. I have really bad back problems and in any other vehicle my back will start hurting after being in it for 30 minutes. But the way the seats in the Mazda are shaped, I can be in the car for about 2 hours before my back starts to hurt. I also love all of the safety features the Mazdas are equipped with.

Reliable, fuel efficient vehicle.
This vehicle has been very reliable for my needs. No problems or breakdowns, just regular maintenance and occasional factory recall. In great working order after six years of ownership. Fantastic fuel economy. Great for commuting and comfortable for road trips.

The Mazda 3 issue report!
The brake sensor went bad fairly quickly which caused it to have a start issue. Other than that it's great, nice and comfy, with a good bit of power and great gas mileage! I am not personally a fan of the way it looks inside when driving but all in all it's great!

Other than not being designed for short people its overall a reliable car.
The Mazda 3 I touring is definitely a reliable vehicle. I love the body style. Although I do find enjoyable things about my Mazda I do feel it is not designed for people that are vertically challenged meaning short. I am 5 feet tall and this car has quite a lot of blind spots. The Mazda 3 also does not allow the same amount of seat movement as other vehicles.

Mazda 3- reliable and great on gas.
I haven't had any issues with my car at all. The car is very reliable. The car is very good on gas, I only have to fill up once every 2 weeks on average. The car is very easy to drive and it is always a smooth drive. I wish the car would cool down or warm up a little faster in the winter, however it is not a huge problem and the car is overall great and I love it!

Mazda 3: A Good Car for your kids.
I love my car. It is good on gas and drives smoothly. I have not had any major problems with it and I had a Mazda 3 before this. I would purchase another Mazda in the future. There are numerous features in the car that I love including start to push ignition and the sunroof. The car is also pretty spacious and comfortable for people to sit in the back.

Mazda 3 was a great purchase.
This is a great car. It drives very smooth and is quiet. The Mazda 3 is comfortable and enjoyable. It has a very spacious backseat and trunk. The controls are very straightforward and easy to use and find. I am very happy with the purchase of this car.

This is a great fuel efficient car with good styling.
I like my Mazda because it is fuel efficient and reliable. I also like that it is a hatchback so there is more space to carry things. I would say that I dislike the navigation system and the lack of a backup camera.

Car for families or for looks.
I love the sleek and modern look to it. Mine is red, it is shiny, and in the sun it glistens. I have 2 little ones in car seats and they both fit fine in the back with plenty of room for a small person to sit in the middle. Very spacious and comfortable back and front seats.

Mazda 3 is the best car I have ever owned.
Overall the vehicle has been fantastic. I have only had problems with the heat not working. It was a simple fix though, just have to take the glove box out and reattach a thing. Otherwise I love the car and decided to keep it after my lease. It is peppy but fuel efficient, and a very smooth ride.

It is very reliable and low maintenance
I love all of the features- sunroof, leather seats, bluetooth technology. It is also very low maintenance and gets very good gas mileage

Do not buy if you live where it snows.
Terrible in snow, would not recommend in northern states. Very rigid ride. Comfortable interior. I am very unlikely to purchase another Mazda. Customer service has been awful and I am more likely to look for vehicles known for handling seasonal weather better.

It drives smoothly and is very safe
I wanted to get the hatchback but it was unavailable. The interior is roomy but could be bigger. The speed was the biggest draw
