Alex Showalter
Oct 27, 2023

The 2020 Mercedes GLE lasts around 200,000 miles, with some average check engine light and brake wear issues reported. At $42,550 to $65,999, it’s expensive, but worth the money if you’re looking for a very luxurious midsize SUV.

The optional V8 engines are very powerful, the cabin is roomy for an SUV of its size and it has a lot of safety technology available.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The stereo system menu is very complex, replacement parts are expensive if anything breaks and the air suspension feels floaty.

It is a new Mercedes, it looks like an iPad is going across the whole dash.
There’s a no vehicle problems for me. I have owned a 2013 Mercedes as well and I loved it so I. Decided to purchase this new one and so far I have no complaints. It is very reliable. Only downfall is the price of oil changes and things like that, but it is a luxury car, so that is what you get with that kind of car.

Mercedes Benz is the best car brand ever.
I have no problems. The Mercedes Benz is really comfortable and nice and leathery! Mine is a gle class and is black. I would highly recommend buying it. But, only if you can afford it. But there are plenty of cheap Mercedes Benz. In conclusion the Mercedes Benz car brand is extremely good.

Very Sub Par Customer Service
Problems with “hey Mercedes” she can’t do anything; the navigation is worthless other than directional. Customer Service Sucks - From service techs to service manager - they lie to my face and on my VM - which I have a record of; they have no clue what part I was having trouble with - one person said it was an “air flow pan something” so that’s what the service guy said I wanted checked on the service request; then identified it as something else on the repair receipt as not having a problem! I don’t know of this is to confuse the records so that the part(s) won’t be qualified or identified later when checking for warranty, or checking for complaints about the part in case they get sued or more complaints—I don’t know and don’t care, I just know this is horrible customer service. No surprise no one was there when I came to pick up my car, even though the service manager said there were several cars in my range that had the same discoloration on the “muffler” due to heat exhaust — after 6 months — ? Really? First they did not know what it was, then they came up with the excuse maybe it was road conditions, or salt air, then they finally came up with heat exhaust causing discoloration. When they were to have shown me the other cars with the same problem — naturally, no one was there - even though it was still during their workday business opening hours as posted on right outside their office door and on their cards! Shame on you Mercedes Benz of Laguna Niguel, Eddie Chavez, and the unnamed service manager who would not repeat his full name. I plan on researching this issue with other MBZ dealers because I suspect I may have even been given an after market part the way this muffler is so discolored - I really do not believe any certified MBZ part could do this. Sadly, the folks at Mercedes Benz of Laguna Niguel are too incompetent, lazy, or just don’t care to find out what the problem is and they could give a s**t now that they made the sale. It would cost them less than $1,000 to replace this part and save their reputation, but NOOOO! Shame on them!

Poor customer service
I purchased a new 2020 GLE 350 I noticed a whistle in the window. I took it in and was told it was NOT the window rather the driver mirror. The dealership replaced the mirror twice. The conclusion was it is a factory default the have found with the GLE 350 and they are working to engineer a new part but they are not sure when it will be available. I called customer service at the 800 number at the main MB office. They told me they would do nothing further rather I would have to wait out a new engineered part. So I am driving an expensive vehicle listening to a whistle. I told them if this was GE and I purchase a new washer and this happened GE would replace the washer.

Would not recommend. My drivers side window makes a popping noise every time I open it. The service center told me it was because I park under a ... Ready for it? ... Sappy tree! I park my car in a garage!!! My brother in law is a car mechanic and said it’s total BS. Now during our first snowstorm the passenger side window doesn’t respond to trying to open or close it. And wireless charging isn’t working for some reason. For $70,000 you can buy a much better car. I should have paid attention to the red flags when I had to track down the sales guy to BUY the car and when he told me that 80% lease instead of buying (aka he knew they were pieces of c**p). Sad as it’s my first major car purchase. Such a disappointment to spend this kind of money on a car and to have it be a piece of c**p and to be treated like a piece of c**p by the a$$hole service advisors when I have countless issues with my one year old Mercedes. (As an aside prior to this I had a Lexus for 13 years with very few issues. I’m good to my car.)

Problem with tail light
Received car in May 2019. Driving home in the rain (Oct 2020) warning light goes on with message stating right rear tail light is ouT. Turns out, there was water accumulation in the whole assembly that shorted out the light (no bulbs). Defect? Probably. A well of water should not accumulate. There was no accident etc to cause this. Should not have occurred.

This car is really hard to take care of please be careful with what car you buy.
It's an alright car it's not that big of a deal many people think owning a car like this is cool but it's pretty stressful because I used to watch my dad clean his when I was younger and he always just focused on his car his car was his pride and joy until he sold it for a truck.

What Do Critics Say About the Mercedes GLE?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Mercedes GLE offers impressive fit and finish and strong engines, with good owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Mercedes GLE at 3.9/5, enjoying the advanced MBUX infotainment system, but doesn’t like the rough transmission gear changes.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the GLE a 3.7/5, praising the extremely luxurious interior, but owners don’t like how floaty the steering feels.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Mercedes GLE Have?

Common problems reported on the 2020 Mercedes GLE include check engine lights, excessive brake wear, along with dead batteries. Overall, these problems are similar to some other midsize luxury SUVs on the market, but repair costs are more expensive than average.

Check engine lights are the most widespread complaint from 2020 GLE owners, showing up within the first 15,000 miles. When you see a check engine light on your dash, you will need to use an OBD-II scan tool to read the code that caused the light to turn on in the first place. From there, the problem can be as simple as a damaged gas cap or loose sensor, all the way up to serious mechanical issues, making them cost $20 to over $1,000 to fix.

Excessive brake wear has also been reported by some Mercedes GLE owners at around 10,000 miles. The front brake pads wear down quickly due to the weight of the SUV. Changing out the brake pads costs around $400, while new rotors are an additional $900 if they are damaged.

Dead batteries are another problem mentioned by 2020 Mercedes GLE owners within the first 2,500 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories and computers in the GLE, and sometimes they do not shut down properly when the engine is off. Diagnosing the source of the problem costs about $150, while fixing it can cost $10 to $250.

There are 34 recalls on the 2020 Mercedes GLE, which is much worse than other midsize SUVs, although many of the issues are computer and software related, or only cover a small number of vehicles. The most serious recall is for the engine stalling due to water getting into the vehicle. Dealers will install a water plug for free on affected models.

How Long Will the 2020 Mercedes GLE Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Mercedes GLE can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than some other luxury SUVs in the same price range, like the Lexus GX. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than the competition, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $1,184 per year.

As a used 2020 Mercedes GLE reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the drive belt idler pulley for $300, fuel tank evaporative canister costing $600, along with the A/C condenser, which costs around $1,400.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is excellent, and includes the large 12.3-inch touchscreen with the MBUX software, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades include a powerful 25-speaker Burmester sound system.

Standard safety technology is great for an SUV, and features:

  • Rearview camera
  • Active brake assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Driver attention monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Parallel and perpendicular park assist
  • Mercedes Pre-Safe, which tightens seatbelts and rolls up windows in the event of a collision

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Lane keep assist
  • Automatic high-beam and adaptive headlights
  • Pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Front cross traffic alert
  • Active steering assist
  • Head-up display
  • Lane change assist

Is the 2020 Mercedes GLE a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Mercedes GLE is a good value if you’re in the market for a luxury midsize SUV with an extremely nice interior. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $42,550 to $65,999, making it more than a Lincoln Nautilus or Volvo XC90. When new, the price range was $54,250 to $77,600. Depreciation is a bit worse than some other SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

The seats are wrapped in high-quality materials and come with multiple adjustment options, including lumbar support, providing a tailored seating experience for individuals of all sizes. The cabin itself is spacious, giving ample legroom and headroom, making even long journeys feel relaxing.

The GLE’s suspension system is adept at absorbing road imperfections, providing a smooth ride irrespective of the terrain. Moreover, the cabin is exceptionally quiet, with the vehicle’s insulation effectively filtering out external noises, be it from the road or the environment. The addition of features like dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats, and an intuitive infotainment system further elevate the comfort levels. All these attributes combined make the 2020 Mercedes GLE a sanctuary of comfort on wheels.

How Much Storage Space Does the Mercedes GLE Have?

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Mercedes GLE was introduced for the 2020 model year.

2016: First model year for the Mercedes Benz GLE, which is replacing the older M-Class with new styling, stronger engines, and more standard features.

2017: Minor changes to the standard equipment lineup, diesel engine removed, and new AMG GLE 43 introduced.

2018: Improved performance from a stronger engine in the AMG GLE 43.

2019: GLE 350 has been renamed to GLE 400 with a stronger turbocharged V6, all-wheel drive is also standard on all models.

2020: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new styling, engines, and technology features.

2021: All-new AMG GLE 53 and GLE 63 S introduced with improved performance and more responsive handling.

How Does the Mercedes GLE Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Mercedes GLE is a nice luxury SUV offering a very upscale interior paired with excellent technology, although it’s more expensive to own long-term than most of the competitors.

The BMW X5 is another popular midsize luxury SUV, which is about $1,500 less. Steering is sportier and more responsive in the BMW X5, while the Mercedes GLE has a more luxurious cabin. We recommend the BMW X5 since it’s cheaper to own, but both are great luxury midsize SUVs worth test driving to see which you prefer.

The Range Rover Sport is a popular competitor, which costs about $3,500 more. The suspension and off-road performance are better in the Range Rover Sport, while the technology features are superior in the Mercedes GLE. We recommend the Mercedes GLE since they have fewer mechanical problems reported as they age.

I had this vehicle since Feb. 2020 and notice no problems yet. I love the fact you can change the color of the lights in the cabin to whatever you are feeling at the time. It also makes a wonderful trip vehicle. It shows upcoming restaurants on the next exit so you can plan your trip to your specifications. I really love the feature of asking Mercedes to do whatever you want by just asking such as changing the music, the color of the lighting, directions, and even turning on the massage seats. It's literally the most awesome vehicle I ever driven.

Classy not flashy SUV - gle 350 is a nice drive.
Exterior looks simple but luxurious and classy. Drives and accelerated smooth. Four-wheel drive has been excellent especially in winter conditions in Michigan. Interior trim and finishes are modern yet classic - does not too flashy or techy. Added panoramic sunroof makes the SUV appear much bigger than it is. Leather seats are smooth and comfortable. Cons: parking brake press feature (sometimes you forget), having to download an app in order to get remote start; no touch screen pad - you need to control the screen using a dial which is not convenient; heated seats should be in rear seats as well.

Beautiful style matches how well it drives.
It's a beautiful car that drives smooth and powerful. The interior and the exterior are both done really well with enough space for a family. It is slick looking but has also been good for a young kid. Technology is amazing and it is a really safe car.

A V8 AMG without the price tag
No issues with my GLE 580. MB quality all the way. Smooth riding and awesome looks.

Energy saver car with great driving in all kinds of road condition.
Easy to drive in all kinds of road conditions. Seats are very comfy, good music sounds but did not come with the step board. I have to order and have to be installed. Heating and air conditioning system is good. Love the exterior color of metallic blue n beige interior. This car is gas energy saver.

Love it but could use more follow through
I love almost everything about my car. However the 'hey Mercedes' functional isn't that great. Half the time she cannot understand what I am asking. Also the map in the navigation isn't great either. It doesn't offer short routes and I tend to use google maps or waze

Luxurious and innovative technology.
Great technology, smooth ride, luxurious features, smart technology with hey Mercedes, navigation features, spacious, has camera in front when at stop lights, roomy back seat, trunk lifts automatically, has lots of space, cooling and heating seats, leather interior.

Big, comfy, luxurious, hefty price, loud, and nice to have.
Pros: feels nice (leather). Lots of room. Comfy. Plenty of add-on choices. Window is not as shaky as it used to be (in previous models/compared to other car brands). Cons: no sun blockers on windows. Can be hard to clean (since it is leather). Is very loud (engine) from outside. Not very fuel efficient.

Love this car! Safe, reliable, beautiful.
Beautiful car. Quiet. Smooth. Back-up and side view cameras. Navigation is easy to use. Apple carplay is nice for listening to things on your phone. Back seat is roomy. Third row of seats is a nice add-on if you have kids. Safety features are great. My number one reason for buying a Mercedes is safety.

The car is wonderful I love the interior and the exterior.
Nice car and interior and exterior I love the way that the car sounds when it starts off and how beautiful the lights in the car look like I have a pink light inside and during the night it looks so beautiful and makes me feel like a baddie I didn't spend too much money on it.

Everything is interesting.
My vehicle works great. I have no problems with it. I have spent over hundreds of dollars to decorate my car. It is one car that I hope I have for a long time. It is very comfortable I have black interior. I love this car so much and I would really recommend it for people.

Luxury ride, spacious interior, panoramic roof, massaging seats, moose lighting.
A harmony of luxury, technology, and German machinery. It feels like you are gliding when you drive making it such a comfortable ride. The massage seats and the mood lighting are a definite plus. The touch screen display stretches across the dash to the driver giving it the look of one big screen.

Car is for everyone not just for your family but for you. It is safe and secure.
It is very comfortable and reliable. Interior are extremely good. The servicing take place regularly that keeps the car in a great shape. The leg room is really great for everyone. There are features like seat heating which I really like. It has a great car trunk space if we go for a long drive or family trip. There is interior lighting that I do not like other than that I like everything in my car.

Benz is amazing best car ever.
It is real good. The way the car rides is amazing and I have never experienced anything like it. Such an absolutely smooth ride and one of the best I have ever put my hands on. If anyone is going to consider buying anything like this Benz then they will not regret it because it is stunning and ridiculous.

Exciting to drive and tons of technology.
Love everything about the car. Good technology, ride comfortable and spacious. The navigation video makes following directions much easier. You can fold the back seat down and fit more things in the back. You can use the remote start to start the car.

Amazing gas mileage for a luxury SUV!
This vehicle is amazing! I recently traveled 300+ miles. I had the eco setting on for the entire trip which was mostly passing through small towns with lots of stopping and starting. I started the trip with 366 miles remaining in my tank. After my entire trip, I still had 152 miles remaining in my tank! The comfort is fabulous-this is all a big improvement from my 2017 gle350. Great vehicle!

Sleek and powerful driving machine.
The car drives extremely smoothly. It has features which I never thought I’d need, such as: massaging seats, hands-free steering (it can change lanes perfectly, slow down depending on how close you are to a car, etc, without the driver doing any work!).

Dependable mb with great new interior design.
Love the new interior design with ambient lighting and full touchscreen dashboard. Car is dependable and great ride with safety features. Prefer to AMG sport model with enhanced looks. Car has great handling. They are pricey even when you lease them but overall happy with the selection.
