2019 Nissan Frontier Review: Reliable Small Truck With Reasonable Ownership Costs As It Ages

Alex Showalter
Sep 25, 2023

The 2019 Nissan Frontier lasts around 250,000 miles with some relatively minor A/C system and suspension vibration issues reported. At $17,200 to $34,525, it’s a great value for a practical compact truck even if it’s a bit outdated.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The suspension is comfortable, its four-wheel drive system works great and the V6 engine is strong.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The technology features are outdated, there’s not a lot of legroom in the rear seats and it doesn’t have any advanced safety features.

Is the 2019 Nissan Frontier a Good Used Truck?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2019 is a good year for the Nissan Frontier since it offers dependable engines and is more affordable than some competitors. Owner reviews praise the powerful V6 engine, strong 4WD system, and the smooth suspension.

  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 19 MPG, giving 400 miles of range out of the 21.1 gallon tank. Gas costs are $15 higher than average, at $295 per month.
  • Value 9/10 – The 2019 Nissan Frontier is cheaper than most other trucks on the market with slow depreciation rates, giving it a high overall value score.

Great all-around truck for everyday needs.
Extremely smooth ride, have yet to have any problems with the truck, repairs are cheap and easy, most parts can be bought from any local auto store. Have done many long trips and the cab is very comfortable even after a 10 hour ride, speakers sound beautiful and have great bass for stock speakers. Have had problems with the dash UI and songs will not display properly and sometimes the radio/Bluetooth will completely turn off. Other than that the truck is an absolute beast and will stay with me for a long time.

Nice ride great performance.
No problems the v 6 engine has plenty of power. The seat are cloth extremely comfortable. I does not have a CD player which was disappointing I had to buy on to plug into the car jack. When you only have one window down it is like you are in a wind tunnel but just crack one of the others and the effect is gone.

Great all around Truck
I traded up from a 2016 S model to a 2019 SV-14 model. I love the look, feel, and added features of this truck. The 16" wheels makes a difference in ride and feel. I love the idea that I have a 6' truck bed but its still small enough to drive and park without the Large truck problems. I recommend this model to anyone looking for a small to midsize truck.

Leather interior is top notch,.
Leather interior is top notch. Feels great to drive for long distance trips. The rear coil springs make the drive that much better. Can complain about the truck as I have liked it. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a small truck. Go ahead and give it a try.

Perfect midsize truck to buy.
It is a very reliable truck very roomy. Gas mileage is pretty good for a small truck. The features are basic but had for over a year and everything is still in great condition. I would recommend this truck to anyone especially small family or a college student!

Smooth riding and more of a comfort truck than a work truck.
This is a very nice vehicle. It being a sl it has heated seats, leather seats, sunroof, storage under the back big seat and about thirty other special features. The only complaint I have about my crew cab frontier is that when turning around it will not make a complete circle. If I have to make a complete turn around-unless there is a lot of space - I have to do a half circle and back up and then complete the turn.

Great midsize truck v6 power.
V6 good power nice ride 4wd helps in the mountain winters like sitting up higher than a regular car. Little bit pricey but worth it. Prefer the cloth seat covers leather for sure. No CD player though was a little disappointing. Had to hassle the deal because there was no spare tire!

The worse in my life time on owning cars and trucks
I could not believe the self TAPING bolts all over the truck. What happen to body bolts. The other day had it on my lift to rotate tires. I could not remove one lug nut. Somehow they put some cheap coating on the lug nut. The only way would be hammer socket on to remove. Ok now you need a new one at $6.00 . I can oly imagine being on the side of the intersta with a flat and trying to remove the lugs with the China lug wrench. The only thing that is good is the price. I think so

Where’s my review You didn’t like it? If you live anywhere it snows do not and I really mean do not purchase this truck with out test driving it in a snow event (December 5 2020) on route 95 in Maine nearly got killed. The trucks nose is way too short. Nissan should address that before someone dies

Solid truck for general and daily use.
The 2019 frontier is a solid small truck. We chose it due to the affordability and basic towing options it provided. It is dependable and takes care of our hauling and towing needs. The sv model is very limited on technology. There is not any navigation or carplay features. However, basic phone pairing and Bluetooth capabilities are still available.

Don’t know if anyone has driven the 2019sv4x4 i in the snow or slush,I have. December 5th 2020 the wet snow in Maine, the front wheels are too far forward which makes whatever slush you go through come right up over the hood like a blanket. If you live any where that snows alot (North East New England) I would definitely reconsider this truck. It is the oldest newest truck on the market, everything is simple.
It is a great truck overall, but it lacks some modern features like motorized seats and blind side detection. The radio does have a defect where it restarts without notice. Great highway mileage and smooth rides with plenty of room inside the cab. Would recommend.

Do not make the same mistake.
Starts with a loud noise, handles bumps roughly, no rear window defogger, develop rust too soon, poor on gas and if I had to do it all again I would have never purchased this vehicle. Had a ford f-150 and should have never traded it in for Nissan frontier.

What Do Critics Say About the Nissan Frontier?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Nissan Frontier is outdated and lacks some of the polish found on other more modern trucks, with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 2019 Frontier at 4.2/5, enjoying the Pro-4X model off-road, but doesn’t like the poor fuel economy compared to other trucks.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Frontier a 4.4/5, praising the old-school driving experience, but owners don’t like the lack of safety technology.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Nissan Frontier Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Nissan Frontier include the A/C system not working, vibrations at highway speeds, along with some excessive noise from the wheels. Overall, these problems are similar to other small trucks on the market, leading to average repair costs as they age.

The A/C system not working is the most widespread complaint from 2019 Frontier owners, showing up at around 10,000 miles. Usually the problem is caused by the A/C compressor having a clutch slipping issue. Rebuilding the compressor costs around $450, depending on local labor rates.

Vibrations at highway speeds have also been reported on some 2019 Frontier models at roughly 35,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by some worn out suspension components including bushings. Fixing the suspension and replacing the bushings costs roughly $500.

Excessive noise from the wheels is another problem mentioned by some Frontier owners in the first 50,000 miles. Worn-out wheel bearings are the most common source of the problem, which can cause a howling noise. Replacing the wheel bearings costs around $400.

There is only one recall on the 2019 Nissan Frontier, which is better than some other compact trucks on the market. The recall covers the backup camera failing to display an image on the screen. Nissan will update backup camera software on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2019 Nissan Frontier Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Nissan Frontier can last around 250,000 miles, which is shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Tacoma. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other small trucks according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $435 per year.

As a used 2019 Frontier reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the blower motor for $250, fuel temperature sensor costing $300, along with the water pump which costs $725.

accountCircle Rodney M

I have not had any problems yet I just bought it in march but already have drove it a lot and have a ton. Of miles on it.

accountCircle Nyjah C

From the short period of time that I have had the vehicle it has been very reliable for me I really haven't had any problems.

How Is the Technology?

Standard entertainment technology is very good for a small truck, offering a 7-inch central display. Optional upgrades include a more powerful Rockford Fosgate audio system.

The safety technology is basic, only offering a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include rear parking sensors.

Is the 2019 Nissan Frontier a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Nissan Frontier is a good value since it’s cheaper than most other small trucks, although you sacrifice some of the latest tech features for that low listing price. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $17,200 to $34,525, making it less than a Chevrolet Colorado or Honda Ridgeline. When new, the price range was $19,290 to $37,150. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 3% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Nissan Frontier?

  • 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine: This engine produces 152 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft of torque at up to 19 MPG. It comes paired with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. While this engine is suitable for daily driving and light-duty tasks, it’s not the most spirited regarding acceleration, taking more than 9 seconds to reach 0-60 MPH. Towing capacity for this engine is relatively modest, maxing out at around 3,500 pounds.
  • 4.0-liter V6 engine: As the more robust option, the V6 generates a more potent 261 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft of torque, while getting 18 MPG. It comes mated to either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. The V6 provides brisker acceleration, with a 0-60 MPH time of 7.5 seconds. When properly equipped, the Frontier with this engine can tow up to 6,720 pounds, making it more suitable for heftier towing tasks.

What Colors Does the Nissan Frontier Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Nissan Frontier?

The 2019 Nissan Frontier strikes a balance between rugged utility and passenger comfort. While it has many of the design elements from previous years, making it feel a bit dated compared to some newer competitors, it offers a straightforward, user-friendly interior. The seats, particularly in the higher trims, are cushioned and supportive, providing a reasonable degree of comfort for both short trips and longer journeys. The ride quality is generally smooth, but, like many trucks, it can get a bit bouncy when the bed is empty.

Noise insulation is adequate, though not class-leading, guaranteeing that the cabin remains relatively quiet from most road and wind noises. The available Crew Cab variant provides rear-seat passengers with decent legroom, making it suitable for families or those who often travel with passengers. Higher trim levels, like the SL, come with additional amenities such as leather seating and dual-zone automatic climate control, further enhancing the comfort level. However, it’s worth noting that while the 2019 Frontier provides satisfactory comfort, it doesn’t match the refinement or advanced features found in some of its more modern rivals.

How Much Storage Space Does the Nissan Frontier Have?

The 2019 Nissan Frontier is a versatile mid-size pickup truck that comes with different bed lengths and a spacious interior designed for comfort and convenience. Specifically, the Frontier is available in two bed lengths: the shorter 5-foot bed (found on Crew Cab models) and the longer 6.1-foot bed (available on King Cab models). These bed lengths offer substantial space to carry a variety of items. For instance, the 5-foot bed can comfortably accommodate standard-sized mountain bikes, garden tools, and small furniture items, while the 6.1-foot bed provides additional room for longer items like ladders, kayaks, or longer pieces of lumber.

Regarding interior storage, the 2019 Frontier is equipped with multiple compartments designed to keep personal items organized. The door panels come with pockets and bottle holders, making it convenient to store beverages, maps, or small items. Additionally, there’s a dual-level glove compartment, which offers more organized storage for documents and other essential belongings. Some Frontier models also feature a multi-functional center console with cup holders and a storage bin beneath the armrest. The fold-flat passenger seat and under-seat storage bins in certain models further expand the storage possibilities inside the truck, making it suitable for both work and leisure purposes.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Nissan Frontier was introduced for the 2005 model year.

2015: SV and Desert Runner models offer a new 5-inch screen with Nissan Connect apps.

2016: More exterior color choices, sunroof added to the SV model.

2017: S Work Truck package has a spray-in bed line and standard rubber floor mats.

2018: Rearview camera is now standard on all models, A/C and cruise control included on the S model.

2019: Upgraded 7-inch touchscreen on the S and SV models.

2020: New 3.8L V6 engine added, and the center console has been redesigned.

2021: No updates from other years.

How Does the Nissan Frontier Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Nissan Frontier is a nice compact truck, although it is a bit outdated compared to some of the other choices on the market, which ultimately just helps it be a better value for shoppers.

The Toyota Tacoma is another small truck which can be found for about $3,500 more. Off-road performance is better in the Toyota Tacoma, while the rear seats in the Nissan Frontier have more room. We recommend the Toyota Tacoma since it’s the longest-lasting compact truck on the market, but if you’re on a budget the Frontier is a nice choice.

The Ford Ranger is a popular competitor which is available for roughly $2,000 more. Standard technology is better in the Ford Ranger, while the Nissan Frontier has lower ownership costs as it ages. We recommend the Nissan Frontier, although both are similar small trucks worth testing out to see which you prefer.

Overall I am pleased with this vehicle. I am a huge xterra fan and since the stopped making them, I found this to be similar enough, especially sitting inside and was able to get a decent deal on the vehicle. I have not experienced any issues yet but only have about 3500 miles on it. I am disappointed in the low gas mileage as I am averaging about 14 mpg which is less than I was told I could expect and quite a bit lower than my previous xterra that I used to own.

Towing with the 2019 Nissan frontier sv crew cab.
My Nissan frontier is primarily used for towing our 24 foot travel trailer - and it tows like a dream. We didn't go with the 4x4 so that we could have a higher towing capacity. And it still averages about 12 mpg when we're towing, otherwise it is about 21 mpg! We have a crew cab and the inside is so roomy, feels like you are in a regular sedan. It is such a quiet, smooth ride as well, considering it is a pickup. The 5x5 bed is roomy enough for us!

Really rough ride. Pretty well equipped but missing some features most vehicles have now. Lacks an automatic setting for headlights, has old style trip meter, no computer info available on engine coolant temp., oil pressure, transmission temp, gas mileage, etc. That one sees in modern trucks now. Nice speakers and Bluetooth equipped radio but no satellite radio available. I will have to replace the radio to get Sirius (long commute every day so I miss the satellite radio).

I have no real issues to report about my vehicle. There was some wear and tear at the time of purchase, but that was as a result of buying used. It handles well, and is comfortable. The only feature I feel I would want would be some kind of built-in GPS or other touchscreen functionality.

Very interesting Nissan truck.
More electrical truck than the old school trucks, but does ride well and like the look of the truck. Should have been a new look on this truck I feel. Gas wise could be a lot better. The digital radio is not good at all. Handles good in the rain. Better tires could be put on the truck.

Correction
I posted that the gross weight of my trailer was 3600 lbs. But that was a mistake. The gross weight is actually 5000 lbs. 3600 is the dry weight. Oops ?

The frontier I own is four wheel drive.
The frontier is a very reliable truck. Gas mileage is not great neither is the size of the fuel tank. The options it has are not great but overall they are not bad either. The frontier is mechanically sound. The truck drives particularly fast and smooth more like a car than a truck. Towing capacity is not great but it works good for what I need it for.

Best rough terrain truck on the market. Even in the snowy winter months.
Best Nissan truck I have owned so far. I am a snowmobiler, and travel a lot to go and ride. Being able to have the weight of my sled in the back of the truck, and still get amazing highway gas mileage was a big seller point for me. It drives smoothly on the rough terrain I have to drive over getting to the cabins I stay in to ride. There are a lot of rocky un maintained mountain roads, and my Nissan doesn't miss a beat getting me there, and back to my family safely.

I like the extended cab it is not so much that I feel like I am in a car.
Does not shift gear smoothly at 40 miles an hour other. Then that truck is great. Gains speed a good rate, the breaks do not jerk when you stop. I like the inside the interior it is basic not overdone, there is enough room for shopping bags or other things. I have the extended cab and I still feel like I am in a truck not a car.

Towing capacity
I have a 2019 frontier pro4x and I love it, no complaints. I tow a 3600 lb. (gross weight) camper trailer with it. A quick Google search tells me I can tow up to 6720 lb. In my opinion (and this is only my opinion) I would not go much above my trailer weight just based on the way my truck feels going up and down the road with that weight behind it and the increase in fuel consumption. Maybe I'm being too cautious but I just thought I'd share my thoughts with y'all.

Nissan frontier- great truck in a small package.
I love my truck! It has plenty of space and power. Great features although somewhat behind current technology and standard. It is a basic truck for everyday use. That is the charm of it though. It rides excellent. Seats are very comfortable. I recommend to anyone looking for a truck.

Love the color and performance.
I like my truck. It is not too big to drive. Comfortable ride. Able to put groceries in the back. Sits up high. Feel safe in it, especially when it rains. Great on gas. Love the color of my truck. 4 people can fit into the truck no problem. Truck note in my budget.

2019 Nissan frontier review.
I have had my Nissan frontier for about 4 months now and I have had no problems regarding performance or reliability yet; however, when I was doing my research before I purchased my vehicle most of the reviews I saw said that it is one of nissan’s most reliable vehicles. For being a midsize pickup I was surprised at the amount of room on the inside of the truck. Being 6’4” having a lot of room in a vehicle is something that is very important to me. One of the features that I have enjoyed the most is the backup camera. Although it may not look like it, the Nissan frontier is quite a fast truck. Overall, I have really liked my pickup and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good midsize pickup.

Overall a very good truck. I love to drive it.
Biggest complaint is the turn radius. The titan turns better, also the material the dash and door trim is made out of scratches so easy for a truck. Also when the is shining on the electric touch screen and you are backing up it is pretty much useless because you cannot see the screen.

Big motor for a small truck.
I love my truck, it has plenty of power for a mid size truck. The inside is very roomy I have a 6 foot tall son and he fits in the back seat with no problem. It handles great and looks good. The only issue I have had is the window regulator went out.

Has Power with lots of bells and whistles
Have not experienced any issues so far. Truck has 5400 miles when I purchased it had 5400 miles. Rides well with lots of power as I drive the freeways a lot on my job

Leather interior is top notch,.
Leather interior is top notch. Feels great to drive for long distance trips. The rear coil springs make the drive that much better. Can complain about the truck as I have liked it. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a small truck. Go ahead and give it a try.

Rough ride
Underpowered engine downshifting a lot, noisy interior, rough ride bounces on smooth road, best thing is the looks from outside.

Nice but poor quality control
Bad wheel alignment from factory ...guess they want you to crash ...this is a safety issue ..free oil change means you get regular oil

Impressive power and features.
The 2019 Nissan frontier has been an awesome vehicle. I had one issue with it regarding the shifter, but the warranty took care of it. The size of the vehicle is perfect for hauling most items and the interior room is great. The power of the 6 cylinder engine is perfect for handling traffic.
