2011 Nissan Rogue Review: Unreliable Compact SUV With Drivetrain Problems

Alex Showalter
Mar 24, 2022

The 2011 Rogue only lasts around 150,000 miles with serious transmission and electrical issues. At $7,470 – 8,230, the Rogue is too expensive for all the problems.

Interior cabin materials are high quality, the front seats are comfortable and the suspension is smooth.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Mechanical problems are very common, the engine is weaker than rivals, and cargo space is smaller than the competition.

Is the 2011 Nissan Rogue a Good Used SUV?

  • No, 2011 is a bad year. Owners have complaints about bad transmissions, slow acceleration, and limited interior storage.
  • Reliability ratings are below average with a lot of transmission problems on models from 20082016. There are fewer complaints on 2017 and newer.
  • Performance is weak from the one four-cylinder engine.

  • Fuel economy is good at up to 24 mpg combined.

It gets excellent gas mileage and has been a dependable family vehicle.
The Nissan rogue is very affordable and dependable. It gets great gas mileage.

Drives real smooth, and very dependable.
My SUV drives smooth and has so much space, I can fit my grand kids in it with a problem. It also is very good on gas. I have taken it on several trips without any problems. I also love the style of my SUV. Has been a very dependable truck. Love it.

Rogue was the hear decision I made
Super reliable. No maintenance issues. Gas saver. Very roomy and comfortable car. The year does not display its worth or value. Car by far is most reliable I've had in many years. If your looking to invest on a car for the future with low maintenance and not make you look and feel outdated. This beauty would make any buyer's dream.

Sporty looking SUV is very reliable
Car is very reliable. My daily commute is very rough on cars, and my vehicle has required minimal repairs and replacement. The car is surprisingly good on gas. It is the base model, so the extras are minimal but sufficient. Interior is comfortable. I would buy Nissan again

It is safe for driving around a family and it is great on gas mileage as well!
I love the feel of the car when I'm driving. The ride is smooth and I feel safe with my family in the vehicle. I don't like that it gets hot in the car due to it being summer, but that's probably because my car is black. Other than that, great car, great gas mileage!

It's very reliable! I've never been in a situation where my car broke down on me or let me down in general. Very safe!
I love the leather seats, and the way the entire interior is black. The speakers are amazing, and the GPS works really well. It's also very spacious and comfortable for travel.

My car is reliable. It gets me from point A to B. It also is good on gas.
Nissan is a great quality of cars. They are built well.

This vehicle is the best on I have ever owned.
I have had no problems with this vehicle other than maintenance like tires. I will need new brakes soon. It is comfortable and the perfect size. It rides smooth. The stereo is a Bose and is great.

Transmission
I like the looks of the car, but as far as mechanical, the cvt transmission is junk, constantly whining noise went out at 100,000 miles. Engine noise on start up. This car is maintained regularly. I will never buy a rogue or cvt car again.

Nissan Rogue,problems with that car
Only 70,000 a lot of mechanical problems,,, a lot of money paid to mechanic.Changed a/c , problems with front end ,problems with speed control unable to fix it...

None of the buttons on steering wheel works.
My car does not have any features. The car broke from outside and inside. It does not run well and get stuck in the middle of the road. The car is lesser value than of waste.

Nissan rogue no interesting details.
Transmission is broke and cost 3,000 to fix just as my warranty ran out. Very uncomfortable to drive, terrible pick up, uses a lot of gas for a 4 cylinder. Heat takes a very long time to get warm and the windows get stuck sometimes. The backup camera is not sharp.

Nissan Please recall the transmission to put a cooler on it thanks
The CVT transmission sucks I can't even drive 2 hours before I need to pull over to let it cool down and it gets really annoying also they should recall them to put the transmission cooler on them!! So if Nissan would do that this car would be a 10 hands down!!

Truck, 4 door, 4 wheel drive, Gas Guzzler. Perfect amount of miles on the car
My vehicle is very old to me, very nice truck though. I just don't like trucks as much, takes a lot on gas, maintenance not really that high. I just like cars better. The Nissan rogue is a very good car to have through, if you're a person that likes to travel and is going to pack a car full of things

It has a remote starter and is blue
Air conditioning system broke and now fan will not work. After 750 put into car. Does not have great pick up. The trunk space is not really big. Car is ok on gas. Parts are pretty expensive. Everything is pretty hard to get to in the car. A change holder somewhere on the dashboard would be a good idea.

Nissans wear down too fast.
A/c went out at 80k miles and transmission went out at 100k. Now it won't hold antifreeze and it's hard on brakes and tires. The interior cloth is weak and falling apart from seats to floor. I didn't rank it a 1 because the paint job has held up and the inside roof is still in tact. It has good pickup speed and handles nice but now the cv joints are wearing out and it's very noisy when turning and driving.

What Do Critics Say About the Rogue?

  • Consumer Reports thinks the Rogue has a high-quality interior, but has low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Rogue at 3.8/5 and likes the smooth ride, but finds the visibility very poor.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Rogue a 4.2/5 enjoying the exterior styling, but find the motor to be weak.

What Common Problems Does the 2011 Nissan Rogue Have?

Problems with the 2011 Rogue are pretty serious including transmission failures, air conditioning issues, and paint peeling off.

Transmission failures are the most common problem showing up at around 85,000 miles. The continuously variable transmission in Nissan vehicles is a weak spot. Replacing the transmission for $3,000 is the only way to fix the issue.

Air conditioning compressor failures are another frequent issue at 80,000 miles. When the compressor wears out, the only thing owners can do is replace it costing over $1,100.

Clear coat issues are widespread showing up in the first 60,000 miles. There’s a class-action suit over the problem in which Nissan agreed to pay $400 to fix paint issues. Repainting affected areas can cost more than that at up to $1,000 per panel.

There are two recalls which are serious including the electric power steering which can cause an accident or fire.

How Long Will the 2011 Nissan Rogue Last?

A properly maintained Rogue should last around 150,000 miles, about 150,000 miles shorter than top competitors including the RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are high at $578 per year, according to Repair Pal.

As a Rogue reaches 100,000 miles, owners should prepare to replace shocks and struts for $1,100, oxygen sensors costing $650, as well as the airbag control module which costs $1,200.

Yes it is, I wish 2020 version could be made. Great shape of SUV. No problems at all. Drive very well and neat.

accountCircle Cordelia N

Braking is not good. Suspension is bad. And the blind spots are a lot bigger than other cars. The safety reviews were quite good, though.

accountCircle Raquel R

Yes it's very reliable. It has some problems with the traction showing in the middle of driving and you have to slow down. That can be a problem.

accountCircle Robert B

Recently I had problems with the suspension but otherwise it has only needed routine maintenance. Because of the low purchase price we will probably trade it in sooner.

accountCircle Nicole L

It is mostly reliable. It did have a transmission problem and other problems that I have fixed. I cannot drive it through hills because it starts to slow down and the gas no longer works.

accountCircle Makenzie Z

Recently I had to get new rear brake pads, and last year I had to get the horn and cruise control fixed but that has been it.

accountCircle Rich O

It’s reliable enough to get me to work and back. I have had problems with mine but, I purchased mine used.

accountCircle Taylor Z

For the most part it is reliable. We haven't really had an issue with ours in the time that we have had it.

How Much is the 2011 Nissan Rogue Worth?

Blue book values range from $7,470 – 8,230, making the Rogue over $2,000 cheaper than a CR-V or Liberty. When new, the price range was $21,460 to $25,680. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Rogue?

There are three models of the Rogue available. The navigation and stereo system was just updated for 2011, with the next major redesign coming in 2014.

S is the entry-level model with:

  • 16-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Cruise Control
  • Power Windows And Locks
  • Four-speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo System With USB and AUX Connectivity

Krom Edition is a step up, adding:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Sport Exhaust
  • Unique Front Grille
  • Steering Wheel Stereo Controls

SV is the flagship model and has:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Keyless Ignition
  • Premium Cloth Seating
  • Power Driver’s Seat
  • Six-speaker Stereo System With Bluetooth and Color Display

What Engines Come In the Rogue?

One weak 2.5L four-cylinder engine is available with 170 horsepower. Performance is below average, taking 8.6 seconds to go from 0-60 miles per hour.

What Colors Does the Rogue Come In?

How Big Is the Rogue?

The Rogue is a bit smaller than some other compact SUVs including the Escape and Equinox. Passenger space is cramped in the backseats, which do not recline at all.

There’s less cargo space than rivals at 28.9 cu. ft. of room behind the back seats, increasing to 57.9 with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Rogue Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota RAV4 is one of the highest-rated competitors costing around $4,000 more. The RAV4 has much better reliability ratings, but the Rogue offers higher-quality interior materials. Overall, we recommend the RAV4, which will last longer and be more affordable to own.

The Honda CR-V is another rival at about $2,500 more. Where the Honda stands out is with more technology and room, but the Rogue is easier to maneuver in small cities. Between the two, we recommend the CR-V, which has significantly fewer mechanical problems.

Do Owners Recommend the Nissan Rogue?

accountCircle Patrick S

Yes, it is good on gas and a great SUV to drive. Good on freeways and all. Cheap parts. Nissan product great cars!

accountCircle Cordelia N

Yes, but it is a second hand car. I used to drive a 2010 Mazda cx 9 and I loved it. The Nissan is a very standard car. It has a few nice features such as sport and eco mode. It is a comfortable car, but I personally do not like the way it drives. It feels as though to suspension is not that good, feels top heavy, almost like driving a jeep wrangler, and my breaks are not the best but that is probably just because it is second hand. Overall it is a good vehicle, but if I could trade it in, I would.

accountCircle Raquel R

Yes it's very dependable. It's a great size SUV and it's affordable. There are many features that are helpful.

accountCircle Robert B

Yes it is a good vehicle the maintenance is not too much. It is all wheel drive. The heated seats are a nice feature.

accountCircle Nicole L

It mostly is a good vehicle. It runs and gets me where I need to. But I do have to do repairs quite often and they are not easy repairs either.

accountCircle Makenzie Z

I have really enjoyed it. I paid it off almost a year ago, I have had it for almost 6 years and do not plan on getting a new one anytime in the near future.

accountCircle Nicholas T

It gets me around and is comfortable but, there is nothing over the top about it. I bought mine because I have had so many friends who love them but, I got mine used and have had a lot of issues with it, all prior to 100,000 miles.

accountCircle Loren E

It is a good vehicle. It has pretty good gas mileage, given the cost of fuel these days. It also has great storage capabilities as well.

Story of a decade old car.
The car has had issues with the mass air intake valve sensor, the sensor has been reset and the valve itself has replaced with no resolution to issue. The car is a comfortable ride and offers heated seats and auto dimming mirrors which are a plus for winter/night driving.

Roof rack is great for camping, seats fold down for extra space/room in vehicle.
Bought a used car. Had to replace whole suspension within first year total of close to $4k in repairs. Has weird wobble sway that cannot be diagnosed even after all the repairs. Nice leather interior and roof racks. Like the sunroof and heated seats.

Great overall value and drive!
The rogue is the perfect size for me. Wanted vehicle where for the most part could just step in and not either step up or scrunch down to get into. Like driving it very much and handles well and have been very please that purchased this vehicle back in 2011. Am sure when need another vehicle the rogue will be checked out first.

I love my car, not to big and not to small, very good on gas, drove it across country 3 times now and no problems. Very reliable and comfy, has Bluetooth to connect your phone, radio is very good as well, sounds better on the phone than the regular radio.

Reliability of Nissan rogue. Strong, reliable with affordable comfort to drive.
Nissan rogue is a very strong and reliable vehicle. Its speedometer is moderate, the interior is well built and adorable. It has back camera, automatic gear and good pedal. Good air conditioner system, leather seats and has heat up systems. Externally, the tires are well suitable on the road and weather. However, the only problem it has remains that its gas storage is not big enough for an interrupted long journey.

Nissan rogue and kids. Not for me.
It is great but I need something bigger. Great on gas and reliability, but I need something to withstand winters. I do not have enough cubic feet. I do not have towing. My seats fold flat and is great but not kid friendly. I have navigation and phone adapter but I need more for kids.
accountCircle Lorie H on May 27, 2021
The Nissan rogue is the perfect vehicle.
I purchased my black Nissan rogue used with 137,000 miles on it. I love the way it rides, it is large enough to be comfortable but small enough that I am comfortable driving it. The back has plenty of room for all my groceries. It is very good on gas mileage. The only problems I have had were with the air conditioner. I had to replace the fan to that which was expensive. Also, the tint is coming off.
accountCircle Brenna G on May 25, 2021
Great car, annoying auto lock.
It drives very well for a car which is almost 10 years old. Some of its issues include: fragile door handles, automatic lock while in park, and a tire pressure light that does not go away. The tire pressure light is a recent problem, and only occurred after I switched the battery. The door handle broke off a year after I bought it, so I replaced it. The new one has recently broke off. They are, however, made of very cheap plastic. The auto lock is the worst thing. You can leave your car running in the driveway, come back, and the doors are locked with the key in the engine. It is extremely frustrating and Nissan should send compensation to those who have had to hire a locksmith for this issue.

Reliable and safe car, 10/10.
This car was passed down to me and she works great. I learned how to drive in this car. The rearview camera is great, it has seat warmers and a great sound system. Very reliable car. She's great on gas too. The all wheel drive has been very useful as well.

I love my Nissan rogue for the most part. It is great on gas mileage and has plenty of space in the front and back seats. The trunk also has a lot of space as well. It drives smoothly and I havent really had any issues with the vehicle itself. I have always owned Nissans and they are by far my favorite brand vehicle.

Nissan rogue 2011 review.
Comfortable, feels good to drive, has lots of good features like touchscreen GPS, backup camera, heated seats, good speakers, aux. It does not accelerate too quickly with a light tap so driving and turning all feels very good, and the brakes work super well. The trunk also has a lot of room and the space inside is very comfortable.
accountCircle Olushy I on May 17, 2021
Compact SUV comfortable sitting.
The problem that I have with my vehicle is that I wish it was not too compact not enough room. I love that you can adjust the air according to your height and also adjust the back support. I love that it has a temperature reader on the dashboard. I do not like that it has a Bluetooth for taking a car but not for connecting for music.
accountCircle joseph G on May 11, 2021
2011 Nissan rogue is worth it.
Bought the car essentially brand new. We have changed tires and done basic maintenance on it over 6 years. The only real major work we have had done to it is we had the air conditioner completely replaced but we live in Florida so it was absolutely necessary. Car runs great with about 90,000 miles on it and we are coming up on having to have to brakes replaced in the next year I would believe. Very roomy with a lot of trunk space and the back seats go down to add more space. I would recommend the Nissan brand and specifically the rogue model.
accountCircle Melissa M on May 7, 2021
Nissan rogue starts off as reliable vehicle, but wore down quickly.
The car was fine for the first few years. I hardly drive due to working at home. The air conditioning had to be completed replaced, after being “fixed” twice. The control arms went bad at 50k miles and is a known issue. Nissan does not issue many recalls and does not take much responsibility for issues.
accountCircle Zed M on May 2, 2021
This SUV is very unique, well made and very stylish in my opinion.
This car is really reliable. Just hit over 100,000 miles and have had very little issues. The axle boot broke once over time but was very inexpensive to have fixed. The car rides great and is compact enough to get in smaller areas. I would recommend this SUV to anyone looking for something more than a standard car. The gas mileage is also really good for an SUV at 26 mpg on average. I take care of my cars and this one has held up really well compared to more expensive cars that I have had.

Very reliable, easy to maintain, and fuel efficient. My Nissan rogue also has a decent amount of hauling space when the seats are put down while not being too obtrusive like a larger SUV. It is functional, practical, but stylish at the same time. Highly recommend this make and model.

The fuel economy is good for an SUV.
My vehicle has been extremely reliable for the 150, 000+ miles that it has been in action. It is comfortable and economical. The only complaint I have is the blind spot at the back corners of the vehicle. My vehicle has taken my family on long vacations and everyone has been comfortable. It is good for transporting dogs in the back. The back is also good for daily groceries and stacked suitcases. I have had no major mechanical issues. It is quiet and I can hear my music well.

Plenary of room for small families
My husband doesn't like driving it long amounts of time the driver seat for him to drive he feels like he is touching the roof. It is great on gas. When the ac is on it shakes the steering wheel. The back seat can fit 3 car seats but they have to be slim to get them buckled in right.

Light and does not handle well with turns. The headlights could be brighter, it could have a bit more tech for radio and such for it to be a 2011. It has a lot of room even though it looks small. It is very good on gas as well. Should not have a CD option. And needs a alarm.

The control arms went out around 85,000 miles. I have had to get the automatic seat replaced as well as my air conditioning. It is a good car but does not feel too stable on the road. Best vehicle I have ever owned.
Drives supremely, excellent handling, sturdy and I have absolute confidence with my vehicle's performance and reliability. I have driven over 30,000 miles in just over a year in my rogue, and I have enjoyed every one of them. I love the smooth ride, relaxed feel, the interior and cargo space, and the excellent gas mileage. The only issue I have noticed is a small blind spot on the front passenger side where the frame is for the windshield/passenger door. I had an xterra for almost 300,000 miles and loved it, but this provides a much more smooth and comfortable ride. Fantastic vehicle.

2011 Nissan rogue- average.
I love the interior details of this car. The heated leather seats, Bose sound system, sunroof, and backup camera really make driving worth it. On the other hand, the low gas mileage is not something I am used to. Getting around 21 mpg is not really economical.

Get a Nissan and see how the rogue rules.
Pros: I like the heated seats with two settings( low or high). The backup is an invaluable feature that I use everyday. We have not had any major issues with this durable older vehicle. We really like the keyless doors that is just the push of a button versus having to put in a code as with other types of vehicle. Cons: does have blind spots that you always have to be aware of.

The rogue is great on gas, has a lovely interior, has great sound system. My car is 9 years old and I haven’t had any major mechanical problems. The front control arms have been replaced twice but other than that it drives well. I would purchase another one and would recommend this vehicle.

Reliable and comfortable car.
Small engine for a big car. So it needs more power. It is very comfortable and has lots of space. Good on gas. Parts are not really expensive and most parts are easily found online for decent prices. Anyways being a 4x4 would like more power on it. Ok.
