2012 Ram 1500 Review: A Budget-Friendly Half Ton Truck

Alex Showalter
Jan 17, 2022

The 2012 Ram 1500 is a full size truck with a price range of $10,477 to $24,394. Although there are some engine problems; a lower starting price than other large trucks and more affordable maintenance costs make the Ram 1500 series a truck we recommend.

likeFilled The Good
A more luxurious interior than other full size trucks on the market, the suspension is very smooth on and off the road, and there’s great storage options including the RamBox locking compartment in the bed.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There are fewer safety features than the rivals, the base V6 engine is very weak for a vehicle this large, and the towing capacity is lower than other half-ton trucks.

2012 Ram 1500: Quick Overview

  • New features for the 2012 model year include the introduction of the Tradesman model, and there are new paint color choices including Deep Molten Red, Sagebrush and Tequila Sunrise.
  • Reliability ratings are great, according to J.D. Power, with fewer complaints from owners than the older 2011 model.
  • Three engine choices are available, including an efficient V6, and a powerful HEMI V8.
  • Fuel economy is good for the class, ranking 3rd out of 7 full size trucks with a combined rating of up to 16 miles per gallon.
  • Safety scores are average for the class, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • The 2012 Ram 1500 ranks 5th out of 15 full size trucks based on owner reviews. Good long-term reliability, and a lower cost of ownership than other full size trucks help the Ram 1500 stand out as a good option.

That it's stylish and it has a lot of power and torque to it
Yes I like it especially for towing because I can hook up a trailer to it and haul just about anything

My 2012 Ram 1500 in review.
It is fun to drive with a smooth ride. Easy to park with the back up camera and it gets great fuel mileage. The only issue I have had is a short somewhere on the right headlight some times it lights sometimes I would does not. The dealer look at it and can not explain what this issue is or how to fix it.

Performance at an optimal level.
I noticed sometimes the sunroof leaks. The truck drives smoothly and steady. The paint job is great and is still looking great. The truck has nice looking grey leather seats which can be heated or cooled. The truck is very reliable and performs at an optimal level every time it is driven.

Comfort and convenience!!
Have had that many problems yet the comfort is amazing you can ride in the truck for hours. Plenty of towing power great truck use it every day!! I would recommend over a ford the in cab space is much larger than that of an f150. I always owned ford but definitely like my ram better than any ford I have owned.

Do you need storage. We have loads.
I love how spacious the crew cab is, the seat covers do not hold water and is great for outdoor activities. It's very reliable and it's super easy to haul things. Its average on gas but has tons of storage private and out in the open. I am so happy with my truck!

It is a fantastic truck that they should purchase.
Runs great, we have no issues with it at all, has plenty of room for us and dogs. Very good for long road trips back home.

STAY WELL AWAY
The 5.7 HEMI is the worse engine ever designed. Well documented of the lifters jamming yo and ruining the camshaft resulting in basically an engine replacement.

Ram 1500 truck use over timeless.
Sometimes does not start. Makes weird noises when starting. This is expected because I have had it for a while and it is used for work. In the beginning was very good and reliable. Love the truck and would definitely buy another when this one runs its course is.

Comfortable but motor issues.
Had to put a new motor in at 125,000 miles. Number 4 cylinder went bad. New motor the timing chain broke after about 3000 miles. Beyond the motor issues it rides and drives great. Tons of space and love all the storage options. With the outdoorsman package your bed space is very small and you cannot haul a lot or hook a kayak rack up.

Sensors lights
My problem is traction control and 4wd light on. Changed back sensors and hooked up code reader. No code. Plus if you put in park you can't move shifter. Have to shut truck off, then restart and all light go off until I drive over 55. It has over 100tho miles. But truck runs great though

Heated and vented seats. Dual climate control. DVD player. Ram box (tool box on side). In floor storage (can use as ice chest). Sliding back glass. Sunroof. 4 wheel drive. Dual auto set memory. Rear view camera. Seats 5 people. Built in inverter. 2 sets of over the ear headphones for DVD player.

Reliable gas guzzler truck.
Really powerful vehicle for it is size. The 5.7 hemi performs well and is very reliable in this vehicle. Although, with a big engine comes a big gas bill. Be prepared to stop at a lot of gas stations because this trucks fuel economy is very low compared to other models in the same class.
accountCircle Matt R
Good daily driver, poor towing.
Overall I am happy with my 2012 ram 1500. It drives nice, is reliable, and is generally comfortable. Has plenty of room for a family of five. My major complaint is the towing capability. I tow a 12 foot enclosed trailer as a carpenter and the towing performance of this truck is pretty poor even with a relatively small trailer.
accountCircle Guillermo D
It will last but you will need to put money into it.
Has broken down a few times, one was the fuel pump going out the other was a more expensive engine lifter repair. The truck is not very reliable and also it is bad with mpg averaging about 12 to 13 mpg I personally will not buy another gas dodge again after my experience with this one. Comfort is good very spacious truck if not one of the most spacious trucks out there.

What Problems Does the 2012 Ram 1500 Have?

The 2012 Ram 1500 series has an average number of problems compared to other full size trucks on the market from the same year. There are fewer complaints than the newer 2013 model.

Engine problems, including camshafts and lifters, are the most serious problem. The cams and lifters can fail around 120,000 miles, and replacing the parts costs about $3,600 depending on local labor rates.

Electrical problems with the totally integrated power module are also common, but better than some other Dodge vehicles. The system controls every aspect of the truck, and will prevent the vehicle from starting when there’s a failure. Replacing the TIPM costs about $2,000.

Transmission problems where the truck jerks as it shifts between gears are also mentioned by owners. The rough gear shifts are often just part of normal operation, but in some cases can be a sign of a torque converter issue.

There are 7 recalls, which is average for a truck from 2012. The recalls include the spare tire placard, rear axle pinion nut, air bags, seat covers, transmission rollaway, fire extinguisher, and front fuel tank strap bracket. All are serious and affect the reliability and safety of the truck.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2012 Ram 1500 series is more affordable than other full size trucks on the market with a price range of $10,477 to $24,394, depending on the model and mileage. When new, the price was $22,570 to $46,420. The Ram 1500 series doesn’t hold value as well as other full size trucks, with prices dropping about 40% over the first 5 years.

accountCircle Jesse J

I have owned this truck for nearly two years now. I purchased it with 93k miles on the odometer. It was & continues to remain in excellent mechanical order. I have had no issues with the truck and to date it is at 102k miles. A very dependable and durable vehicle.

accountCircle Reuben C

The ram 1500 is very reliable. I have not had any problems with mine so far. I would recommend to a friend.

accountCircle Brian F

There hasn't been any issues that I have come into contact with just typical oil change, tire rotation, and tire changes.

It is pretty reliable for the most part, but when it needs maintenance or work it tends to be problematic and costly.

accountCircle David C

My truck does not have any problems it is very good it's fun to drive I perform maintenance on it yearly

accountCircle Jaime H

The only problem I ever had with it was a dead battery and presently a transmission issue. It’s stuck in fourth gear.

How Does the 2012 Ram 1500 Compare to Other Trucks?

Ranking 5th out of 15 full size trucks, based on owner reviews, the 2012 Ram 1500 series is in the upper half of the class.

I've had no issues with my Ram 1500. The 4wd is solid and the vehicle handles well in any situation. If I could change anything it would be to increase the gas mileage.

All dodge rams is very user friendly and very reliable.
I've never experienced an issue with my truck and it's almost up to 100k miles. The drivability of the truck is amazing does not drive like truck if we are being honest, the off road capability is also amazing never gotten. Stuck or been in a situation where it has not performed as I need it too. The ability to switch to basic 4 wheel drive on the fly is also a huge benefit of my truck. Overall id recommend this model truck to anyone whether your outdoorsman or someone who just wants the capability of a truck.

2012 ram 1500 big horn snapshot.
This truck has a reliable engine and transmission. Already had problems with the carrier bearings in the differential. Truck seems pretty reliable and love the 5.7l hemi. Smooth ride and seems to be able to tow within its ratings fine. If I towed a lot I would probably add air bags to the rear coil suspension for stability. This truck also handles really well. Driven it in all weather conditions and I have always felt it has performed very well in all driving conditions.
accountCircle Henry G on April 14, 2021
The truck has good mileage, good performance, and good durability.
It has a lot of punch in it for such a small size truck, and is very durable. Most of the time the gas mileage is very good considering it is a truck. Also my favorite part about the truck is how much I use it and how few problems arise with it. I would never get rid of my ram.

My 2012 ram has been great. I haven't had any problems. Change oil, tires etc. Just routine maintenance. It rides great & great on vacations. It has great safety features. I am very comfortable when I carry my grandchildren, fill very safe in a ram.

Ram 1500 sport has something for everyone.
This truck really is the whole package. Mostly used as a commuter/leisure vehicle, it gives performance and safety while also providing power and comfort. The one issue we had was with the hemi 5.7 engine. We had to replace it at just over 100k miles. Granted we did not purchase the vehicle until 80k miles, and the issue we had was with a camshaft which is likely due to poor maintenance before we got it. Now that we have the rebuilt engine, it runs better than ever. I have towed horses with it casually no problem. It is our favorite road trip vehicle as it has enough modern technology for comfort and the cab feels roomy and comfortable. The turning radius is also amazing. It feels like driving an SUV instead of a truck. I feel comfortable in most tight spaces and busy traffic. I would recommend a ram 1500 to anyone looking for the most versatile vehicle while still enjoying decent fuel mileage.

Problems doesn't have the best ability to haul, but is a great asset for a small family. Allows you to load more stuff in the bed without having an extremely long bed. Review of 2012 dodge ram 1500.
The truck had issues with the starter, it was a known recall. I had to have the whole vehicle rewired as well. Other than those two issues the truck is very durable and reliable. I have put my truck through a lot the last eight years and it has not let me down. It is a very roomy truck with lots of leg space in the front and storage space in the back. Despite the bed not being lined it have held up nicely.

I like my truck. It looks great the ride is nice and it has plenty of horsepower for towing or just tearing around. But it does have a few issues. It is only 8 years old and beginning to rust even though I try to keep it in good condition. It also idles rough and shakes when parked with engine idling.

Dodge rams are the best truck and you cannot go wrong. We love our truck!
It is a 4 door but has a smaller back seat. We really like that it had the bench seat up front with the flip up console so that it seats 6 people. We added a cover on the back for storage when traveling and it fits all of my needs. It also has satellite radio so when we ride through the mountains we always have music.
accountCircle Michael H on February 11, 2021
I have the single cab short bed. It has great turning and handling.
The only problem is the Hemi and my lead foot. The + side is I love the power and performance. Sitting up on 20s can be tricky in weather conditions, but the clearance is a good thing. I live in the city so having a truck that is not 4 wheel drive gives me take off power is appreciated and relied upon. Then when I decide to go off-road the limited slip is a good thing. The tow package with the drivetrain setting to match makes the truck a viable tool.

Great work and family truck!
As my family's first truck, the ram 1500 is a great vehicle. We have 3 children under 5 so having enough room in the back seat for 3 car seats was a must. And it exceeds our expectations with that. The front is also very roomy which comes in handy for my 6'2 husband. The bed of the truck is quite large so we're able to store my husband's tools and work things nicely. With also having room for groceries when I go shopping every Friday! The one downfall I have regarding the truck is how tall it is. I am on the shorter side so I have to jump in. If it was a bit shorter it would be perfect!

My dark blue ram truck story.
It is a really nice vehicle. It is very comfortable to drive. It has good gas mileage for a truck and I get a lot out of it. One main problem with it is that sometimes it does not want to turn over. I have to turn the key multiple times to get it to start up.

Great choice of vehicle for family or single person.
The ram 1500 is very reliable. Plenty of room for a large family. And comfortable enough for long trips. Makes trips to lumber/hardware stores a lot easier. 4x4 is a great option as well. Gas mileage is as expected with a full size truck. But otherwise a great choice.

I have not had any problems with this truck. It is been reliable, comfortable and it is a great looking truck. Has all the accessories that you need and depend on. The ride is nice. The gas mileage is good for a 4x4. I have 85.000 miles on it and have done nothing really but change the oil every 3.000 to 4,000 miles.
accountCircle Cass P on December 26, 2020
Great room, lots of power.
Well to start, I enjoy how much room it has in the cab area, plenty of room for my family and friends, the adjustable driver seat helps with my back so I can drive it longer without feeling stiff. The trailer hook up has both types of plugs which is a great plus for pulling different types of trailers. I enjoy having a rear parking detector. Helps to live up to hook up trailer. And the towing haul button helps when pulling heavy loads. Auto start makes it nice for cold mornings. The handling is great, has great power and can get me going quickly. I am disappointed in the plastic bumper, shutters in cold weather from tall frozen snow drifts. Parts are kind of expensive for this, truck. If I were to buy a new one I would choose one with a steel bumper and probably the one with tool box on its back fenders. That would be very nice to have.

It can be snug for seating, but great during snowy days to get over the snow. Great for pickup/ moving day. It is reliable during the toughest days and won't be a regret to the buyer. Back to the snug part of you are a bigger person make sure to resize it for yourself especially if there are people in the back because it isn't a car for the family to take road trip.

Dodge ram longhorn Laramie.
It drives nice very beautiful interior love the heated and air condition seats the heated steering wheel in the winter. I have auto start but the latch sensor is messed up they say it happens often cheap fix but you have to still do it. I love the brown leather but the sides of the seats crack very easy and I often condition them. I love how it has a ton of compartments everywhere on the truck I do not know why other trucks do not have the same options.

Get the 5. 7l V8 instead of the 4. 7l V8. The 4. 7l is not built as solid.
My RAM 1500 has a lot of miles and still runs solid just as the day I purchased it. Aside from the exhaust manifold seal leak the truck sounds great, still the power it had when I got it. I should have optioned for the bigger back seat but the quad cab suits me for what I do anyways. Strong truck all around.

Going strong after 95000 miles.
The gas mileage isn't terrible for a truck, but it could be better. The muffler was falling apart after 8 years and 95000 miles. It runs well and does not have the hemi tick yet, which is fantastic. The rockers are a bit rusty, but not too bad. It's a hemi, hard to go wrong there.

2012 silver ram 1500 crew cab 4 wheel drive.
It is a great truck with plenty of room and drives just fine even in snowy and icy conditions. The only complaint I have is the amount of gas mileage, but that is not unusual for a truck. The bed is perfect in size and it rides comfortably. Nice stereo sound and heats/cools like a dream.

STAY WELL AWAY
The 5.7 HEMI is the worse engine ever designed. Well documented of the lifters jamming yo and ruining the camshaft resulting in basically an engine replacement.

A good ride in just 160 characters, but I had to use at least 250.
No real problems other than when it is cold, the front left blinker does not want to work. Other than that no issues. Comfortable ride, decent highway mileage. I am now just adding some stuff because they think that it takes 250 characters to describe it when it really only takes 160.

Long vehicle life. Best truck for the price.
A ram is the most reliable, durable, and safe vehicle I have ever owned. No major problems. The only issue I have noticed is one faulty headlight. Maintenance kept up it'll run forever. It handles well in the winter and it is roomy inside the cab. Best vehicle of the year in my opinion.

Burnt orange dodge ram 1500.
There is little to no maintenance to my 2012 ram 1500. It is an incredibly smooth ride and has a ton of power. I have also got bags on the back end installed for when I am carrying a heavy load as well as a train air horn. That mixed in with big tires, a body of burnt orange, tinted windows and blacked out everything else, it is a real eye turner. The only issue I have ever had was a slight leak. The leak came from the back light above the cab but was nothing a little clear silicon couldn't fix. The trucks not small but also not too big. I have been a truck owner my entire life and it is by far the best. I am still under 100,000 miles but getting close and haven't had a single mechanical issue. The remote does tend to die a little quick but I think part of that is the remote start that I have installed.

2012 ram 1500 bighorn 5.7 hemi.
I love my ram 1500. The bighorn package is really nice and comes with a Bluetooth radio. You can also get SiriusXM radio which is really nice on long trips. The truck rides smooth like a car, has 4x4 for off road purposes and comes with a tow package. I have the full 4 door crew cab which is very spacious and everyone has plenty of room to stretch their legs. Gets pretty good gas mileage for a truck with a 5.7 liter v8 hemi engine. All around great truck. 5 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful ride with ample storage.
This truck is very reliable starts in the most extreme of conditions. Had no performance issues with it yet as it seems to have plenty of power for towing but just a wonderful job riding down the freeway. The cabin of the truck has plenty of space and everything you need access is within a reasonable distance from the driver. The storage in it is what is most amazing as under the rear seats is storage space and the dual center console storage is great along with dual glove boxes in front of the passenger seat.

A truck for the normal everyday person.
Never had a problem with the truck and always got great maintenance from my local dodge dealership. The truck looks great and I have event added a few details. Gets decent gas mileage. Around 16 on the interstate, 15 or so in town, and up to 20 on highway. Been able to pull or haul anything I need. Comfortably seats 5. So many cup holders.
