2007 Scion tC Review: A Surprisingly Capable Budget Compact

Gilbert Smith
May 3, 2023

The 2007 Scion tC is pricier than the 2007 Hyundai Elantra, and not quite as roomy, but it’s also noticeably sportier by a margin of 23 horsepower, featuring an agile coupe body style and generous standard features. There are sportier compacts out there, but not at $5,500.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
As close as you’re going to get to a Civic Si in a budget compact-priced package. The 2007 tC is just sporty enough to be worth the extra cost over an Elantra.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Trims are limited to a single option, the back seat is cramped, and the ceiling may be too low for taller drivers.

Is the 2007 Scion tC a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – The 2007 Scion tC costs a little more than a typical budget compact, but there are cars that cost nearly twice as much without delivering half the value.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – The ride is smooth and the front seats are comfortable enough. The back seat is a bit tight, and cargo space is limited.
  • Reliability 8/10 – Maintenance costs are low, even by budget compact standards.
  • Safety 7/10 – Crash test ratings are mediocre at best, but anti-lock brakes come standard, which you don’t often see in a budget compact.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – It’s not the most fuel-efficient compact, but it gets an impressive 161 horsepower without too much loss of fuel economy.
  • Value 8/10 – A hidden gem. The 2007 tC is typically priced at the higher end of the budget compact spectrum, but it’s worth the extra money.

Comfortable car with a nice punch
My Scion tc is an awesome car! It is small and zippy. I love the hatchback, I can fit large items in my small car.

It's a young girls dream car!
I absolutely love my car. It's very attractive. It does great on gas and it can get up and go. I've been driving it for the last 8 years and it hasn't given me any major issues!

Great mpg, runs well in cold weather, durable in snow and poor weather. Doesn't require a lot of maintenance

I added a speaker to it and the sound is amazing.
I love my vehicle it is reliable it is comfortable I do not have any problems with it. I use it mostly for work and to take my kids to school. It has a good sound I love blasting my music. The seats are comfortable I can go for a long drive without feeling tired.

It is reliable, does not give really any problems. Easy to drive.
Dislike that it is two door. Love that it has lasted so long, it works, comfortable. Dislike that the paint looks old now.

Oil consumption issue, paint is flaking, tires wear out too fast, spoiler is sun faded, battery lasted only 2 years, wipers wore out.

Honda is the best when it comes to cars that last.
Compact car with great gas mileage. With a trusted company (Toyota) their partner at the time. The price was spot on. All this and not sacrificing style.
accountCircle Austin A
A full tank of gas could last a week or week and a half.
My car is very reliable. Maintenance does hurt make my wallet cry. The car is very comfortable. This car is good on gas and the prices at the pump are fairly low.

It has done well until recently, but it is getting old.
The outside has tons bumps and dents all over it. Tire light is always flashing even though the pressure is not low, the sensor went out. Recently had to put a lot of money into it. I have had to replace the battery twice and just recently had to put new coils in.

Motor is trash
I bought my TC used in 3 2016 from a Toyota dealership it took about 6 mo. And the car developed a tap in it one year later the engine blew I believe I dropped a valve due to the hole in the piston. Replaced the engine that lasted a 2 yrs and is now knocking. I don't understand why this car is having these issues I'm not very satisfied with it I followed and performed oil changes now I do not know what to do.

I think the most important thing to know about my car is that while it looks sporty and fast, it really has no power behind it!
I like how it gets okay gas mileage and has been reliable, however I don't like how small it is (I did when I first bought it, but my needs have changed). I don't like that it only has 2 doors. But I have spent next to nothing on maintenance besides oil changes and the regular scheduled stuff.

Bad gas mileage is about all. And the fact that is it very small.
I like that it is small and compact. It has bad gas mileage. It is small, but people cannot see you.
accountCircle Kelly A
The car used with very low mileage. Problems occurred within the first year.
Leaking air conditioning, front wheel drive is a nightmare, paint is peeling off sides of doors and mirrors.
accountCircle Mark O
The car is cheaply made. Many parts are prone to break.
The gas mileage is low for today's standards in new cars. Also there was an issue with the handle in the back to lift the trunk open. It is prone to just ripping off. With that said the trunk has hydraulics that will give out over time.
accountCircle Casey M
Gets you where you need to go but has its flaws
The scion tc is very reliable, however the interior is barebones and is low in quality. My car has about 140k miles on it and is still in great mechanical condition. The interior however has worn through the years. The sole purpose of this vehicle for me is to commute to work (50 miles a day) and it does it's job. It is a great car to drive if you are looking for something reliable with a low operating cost. It is not a car that will win any beauty contests or surprise you with luxurious features. Overall it is a great car.
accountCircle Heather H
The brand itself is reliable.
It is just an older vehicle that is not as equipped as newer vehicles and it has begun to run behind.

What Do Critics Say About the 2007 Scion tC?

Consumer Reports found the Scion tC to be a boring, but well-rounded coupe, praising the low price point and the generous list of standard features. They had special praise for the car’s quick acceleration and solid fuel economy.

Kelley Blue Book named the Scion tC a worthy successor to the defunct Toyota Celica coupe. They liked the car’s powerful, fuel-efficient engine and low price. They note that the back seat, while spacious for a coupe, may have taller passengers bumping their head on the ceiling.

Edmunds liked the generous standard features, the roomy cabin, the sharp handling and, of course, the low price. They note that the overall vibe of the car is pretty bland.

What Common Problems Does the 2007 Scion tC Have?

The 2007 Scion tC has generated 115 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with engine complaints taking the lead at 31. Driver report excessive oil consumption owing to a defective piston ring. There has been no recall for this issue.

There are 21 visibility complaints on file, with a handful of reports of exploding sunroofs. That is, the sunroof simply pops out of the frame and flies out into traffic.

Structure issues make up 16 complaints in total, with a few drivers reporting the rear hatch wearing out to the point of falling right off the car, and others reporting that it may become impossible to open.

The 2007 tC has only been recalled twice, both times for misprinted load carrying capacity labels.

How Long Will the 2007 Scion tC Last?

Scion tC drivers generally report the car lasting at least 200,000 miles before any major repairs pop up. With excellent care you might get to 250,000 miles, but expect 200,000 as a minimum.

Repairpal estimate that a 2007 Scion tC should cost you a very low $307 a year in maintenance. The most expensive common fix is a new window switch, starting around $453. New blower motors are up there, as well, starting at $393.

accountCircle Theresa B

Very reliable. It only needs routine maintenance and repairs are very few and far between. Great car!!

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology in the 2007 Scion tC is more robust than you might expect of a budget compact released two decades ago. CD/MP3 players come standard, and you’ve even got a customizable welcome screen when you boot the system up.

Safety technology is, likewise, surprisingly generous. Anti-lock brakes come standard, and the car even comes with a first aid kit (of course, most of the items in the box will probably be expired by now).

Is the 2007 Scion tC a Good Value?

Initially marketed as a budget-friendly compact, the 2007 Scion tC is still a good value for the price. The car typically lists for around $5,557, and there’s just the one trim level, so you don’t have to worry about missing out on the bonuses.

If you can find one in good condition, the tC is kind of a hidden gem. When you take the car’s low maintenance and refueling costs and combine that with sticker prices under six grand, you’ve got a pretty good deal on your hands.

What are the Different Models of the 2007 Scion tC?

The 2007 Scion tC is offered in just one trim level, the Base model, featuring:

  • Manual air conditioning
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Steering wheel mounted audio controls
  • CD/MP3 player with 6 Pioneer speakers
  • Cloth seating
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Panorama power moonroof

What Engines Come In the 2007 Scion tC?

  • The 2007 comes packed with a 2.4L inline-four engline delivering 161 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission in front wheel drive, and it averages around 23/31 miles to the gallon, city/highway.

What Colors Does the 2007 Scion tC Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2007 Scion tC?

The 2007 Scion tC’s front row is pretty comfortable. If you’re exceptionally tall you might find the leg and head room a bit tight, but most drivers should have plenty of breathing room up front. The back row is another story, stretching just 47 inches across and offering very little overhead.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2007 Scion tC Have?

The 2007 Scion tC comes up just shy of 13 cubic feet of storage space. This is pretty much on par for a compact or mid-size sedan or coupe. Don’t look for fold-flat seating or anything. What you see is what you get, which is enough space for four or five medium suitcases and a carry-on bag or two.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The Scion tC ran from the 2005 model year to 2016. The 2007 model was the third edition for the 1st Generation, which was retired in 2010.

2005: The 2005 tC was launched as a spiritual successor to the Celica, featuring standard cruise control, power windows, and keyless entry.

2006: Audio got an upgrade for 2006, with a new 160 watt speaker system.

2007: Extendable sun visors and improved interior fabrics are new for 2007.

2008: Side curtain airbags and torso airbags were made standard for 2008.

2009: Seat fabrics were upgraded again for 2009, but there were no other major changes.

How Does the 2007 Scion tC Compare to the Competition?

The first car you’re likely to compare any budget compact to is going to be a Hyundai Elantra, which is a few MPGs more fuel-efficient than the tC, but 23 horses weaker. The Elantra typically sells for about a thousand dollars cheaper, too.

A Dodge Caliber typically sells for around a thousand dollars less than a tC, too. And it’s the most likely of the three to clunk out before it gets anywhere close to 200,000 miles. And, despite the Dodge branding, it’s very slow to accelerate.

The Scion tC costs more than an Elantra, but it’s worth it if you’re looking for a budget compact with a sporty vibe. It’s no Civic Si, but it’s one of the more powerful compacts in its price range.

Scion is really just Toyota.
I like how it was affordable and has a lot of features that I use daily and some features that they thought out well. I wish it had automatic bluetooth connection, but I can add that if I really wanted it. It doesn't have any ridiculous additional features that will make it outdated in a couple of years like newer cars have. It also lets me be in control at all times. It's a fun car to drive and doesn't take away a lot of that capability from the driver. It has a lot of space, but is still a small car that is fun to drive and handles well.

I love my car. It's nice very good on gas and reliable. It's black on black. With 20 inch rims. I haven't had any problems with mine. It took me a while to find one. Small 2 door sedan with sunroof and great sound. 5 speed manual.
This is an adorable small car that is great for a seasoned driver or a teenager. I will say that I would not trust my teenagers to drive it as it gets to speed quickly and handles curves very well. The engine is made to last. I have replaced the radio to have Bluetooth but otherwise no complaints in the entertainment area.

Gas mileage isn't that great because the tank is small, but it has a lot of room in the inside. The back seat folds so you have a lot of trunk space as well. There isn't much pick up, but the vehicle lasts very long. Adjustable seats, good air flow, and a sunroof to experience as well.

Haven't had any issues with it. Drive it from Arizona to California multiple times a year with no issues but normal wear and tear. Decent on gas. Runs smoothly and is quiet. Ac is good. Sunroof is awesome. Easy maintenance if you are a car junky, if not still easy for mechanics to not overcharge for difficult jobs.

Reliability with folding seats.
So far no real issues have come up with my automobile. Through heat, rain, and sleet it has stood the test of time. Only kinds of issues that have come up were that a blinker stopped working for a little bit. Outside of performance, the car has foldable seats which make up for the lack of trunk space. Have had a few problems with this car but so far it's been a reliable car! No engine problems so that's always good! I really love the way it drives. It sounds and is fast like a sports car but looks like a modern town car, if that makes any sense. So if you want a car with sports car like features but looks like a in disguised sports car/town car mixed, this is the one for you! I also really love the inside of this car! Its a two door car and it's actually pretty spacey in the back surprisingly! My favorite part of this car is the two moon roofs it has in it! Two! Its amazing lol one thing though that I don't enjoy is that it has bad blind spots on the sides! Sometimes you really have to stretch to look around them! But besides that I haven't really had any major problems with this car! I really enjoy it and hope this helps help someone else decide on a car they want as well!!:).

My car has been fairly reliable, but there have been many accessory issues since the day I got the car. All of my interior lights are out, it is a well known problem, yet Toyota denies it.
