Alex Showalter
Feb 1, 2023

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek lasts around 250,000 miles with some relatively minor stereo system and windshield issues reported. At $18,000 to $30,593, it’s a good value for a nice small SUV with some excellent off-road capabilities.

likeFilled The Good
There are a lot of nice safety features offered, it has high ground clearance and the suspension is comfortable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine is fairly weak at highway speeds, the handling is loose and passenger room is a little tight in the rear seats.

Is the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2019 is a good year for the Subaru Crosstrek since it has decent reliability paired with standard all-wheel drive. Owner reviews praise the low ownership costs, safety technology, along with the performance in the snow.

There great commuter SUV for the city life.
Great compact SUV for the city goers. Then handling is great for passing other cars on a commuter highway or just working to avoId debris on the road. The moderate acceleration is well compensated by its average 32 mpg. Highly recommend getting the roof racks, the trunk space is enough for daily commuting but not enough for trips.

Adaptive cruise control is my favorite feature of my car.
Pros. The safety features are the reason I went with this vehicle. The features I enjoy are I-sight, lane assist, rear alert and adaptive cruise control. Gas mileage. Bluetooth connectivity with android. Color/body. Sun/moonroof. GPS remote start. -. Cons. There's a lack of power (v4). There's some road noise. Unnecessary braking for tumbleweeds.

Small, compact and reliable.
Small compact and reliable. Had it for about a year now and it has never given me any problems. The a/c works like a charm and for winter it has a seat heating function that makes me feel so warm I almost do not want to get out. It has Bluetooth to connect to your phone so you can make hands free calls, play some music or even open the GPS. I was on the fence at first about this car since I never dealt with this maker before, but now I am glad I took the risk.

Perfect for outdoor adventures.
No problems thus far. We love the safety features on the vehicle - especially the lane safety features and the safety in the snow. We go skiing a lot and need to drive in snowy mountain roads and we totally trust this car to take us safely. It is the perfect size, really comfortable seats. Love that they’re heated.

Love it is the most perfect and safest car there is!
There are no issues with this car it is beautiful, comfortable, and extremely safe! This Subaru has the technology to be one of the safest vehicles on the road. When I say this I mean the car can see if you are driving off the road and it can help correct the driver. This is a good feature because it's not self driving but it drives to help stay safe. It makes me feel safe and comfortable while driving.

This car is exactly what I wanted. It's roomy and it runs well. It has a backup camera.

How I love my Subaru Crosstrek!
The car is very comfortable to drive. I am able to pup my seat up to be further up. Also, I like how I can connect my phone to my car. I have not had any issues with my car just regular maintenance. I also feel safe in my car with the roadside assistance. I am able to call any time when I am in trouble. The car rides very smooth. I feel when it rains or snows my car has a very good grip on the road.

I was pretty happy with the car at first even though it felt like a truck when you hit a bump. During the first winter the car went skidding on a turn and hit a curb and feels wobbly since even though I had Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3s installed I brought it to the garage 4 times and the mechanics can never find anything with the car sometimes when I hit the brakes I can feel the left front tire push up against the car.

2019 Crosstrek paint chipping: my first and last Subaru!
Avoid the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek due to paint chipping issues. Dealership worked with Subaru regional representative to get my car repainted at no cost to me, to fix paint issues. Body shop work was substandard and is chipping again- what paint process are they using to replicate OEM paint? Subaru of America won't acknowledge any "known" problems, of course.

Leaking oil
Very disappointed and dissatisfied with this 2019 Subaru crosstrek premium 6speed manual It’s been in Dealership for an oil leak which ended up to be the cam carrier dealership removed engine and resealed with only 5000 miles on it Clutch chatters bad at cold temperatures below 32 degrees Subaru field service engineer deemed the clutch to be functioning as designed by Subaru and the clutch in the crosstrek are meant to be light and soft The head unit screen freezes and my radio presets go away Apple car play only work when it feels like it And the ac unit is very week And for all my complaints to Subaru of America All I got was free oil changes for 3 years This is the 1st and last subaru for me

Auto door locks
We love our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek but are very disappointed that the limited edition did not come with auto door locks. It came with everything else practically. Safety is crucial especially when driving in unfamiliar places. Seems like that should be a feature for all vehicles and not just a few. Very disappointing!!!!

Small, not great for traveling.
Not comfortable, very small, began rattling after owning for one year. Holds value and has good gas mileage, which is why we bought it. Insurance is very expensive. Apple CarPlay does not always work. Would be a good car for a new driver or young person, but it is not comfortable for long distances. Back/trunk is small and does not hold big items at all.

Subaru, Crosstrek, 2019, good overall wagon.
This car is great for both longer trips and city driving. It is a good size for 4+ passengers and hatchback makes nice for transporting things as needed. Decent gas mileage, but not fantastic. Sometimes the phone/ device connectivity has issues and is annoying. Overall it is a good car with some tech bugs.

What Do Critics Say About the Subaru Crosstrek?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek offers easy-to-use controls, with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Crosstrek at 3.9/5, praising the high ground clearance, but doesn’t like the loose handling.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Crosstrek a 4.4/5, enjoying the standard all-wheel drive system, but owners don’t like the smaller rear seats.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek include the stereo system freezing, broken windshields, along with some more rare reports of sudden acceleration. Overall, most of the problems are relatively minor compared to other compact SUVs on the market, leading to lower ownership costs as the Crosstrek ages.

The stereo system freezing is the most widespread complaint from 2019 Crosstrek owners in the first 10,000 miles. There are software updates which improve the reliability of the system. Most dealerships will install the software updates for free, while some charge around $50 to update the system.

Broken windshields are another problem mentioned by owners at around 5,000 miles. There are some batches of windshield glass which have more imperfections in them, leading to them cracking easier. Replacing the windshield costs around $600 to $800, depending on local labor rates.

Sudden acceleration is relatively rare on the Crosstrek, although it’s serious. There are some electrical and sensor issues in the engine which may cause it to idle higher than normal, which can lead to a stronger acceleration than expected. Fixing the high-idle problems costs $250 to $400, depending on if there are any damaged sensors or not.

There are seven recalls on the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, which is more than many other compact SUVs. The most serious recall is for a loss of electronic power steering assist which can cause an accident. Subaru will replace the steering gearbox for free on affected vehicles. Other recalls cover engine software, along with stabilizer bracket bolts, which Subaru will also fix for free.

How Long Will the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Subaru Crosstrek can last around 250,000 miles, which is around 50,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $400 per year.

As a used 2019 Subaru Crosstrek reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the coolant expansion tank for $350, wheel bearings costing $250, along with the suspension bushings which cost around $400.

How Is the Technology?

Standard safety technology is good with a rearview camera. Optional advanced safety features include driver assistance features such as Subaru Eyesight which has blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, reverse automatic emergency braking, lane departure and sway warning, lane keeping assist, along with automatic high-beams.

Is the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is a good value since it’s reliable and has a lot of safety features. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $18,000 to $30,593, making it more than a Nissan Rogue or Kia Niro. The more expensive Crosstreks are certified pre-owned vehicles which have a longer warranty. When new, the price range was $21,895 to $27,195. Depreciation is better than many other small SUVs, only losing around 8% of its current value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Subaru Crosstrek was launched in 2013, and replaced by the second generation in 2018.

2015: Standard rearview camera on all models, new entry-level model, available Subaru EyeSight safety system.

2016: New interior trim choices and small front-end changes.

2017: All-new 2.0i Premium Special Edition model added, hybrid model discontinued.

2018: Fully redesigned for the second generation with a new interior, exterior, and suspension.

2019: Upgraded Subaru Starlink infotainment system with only a few changes.

2020: Standard engine start-stop, new LED light features added.

2021: More powerful 2.5L 4-cylinder, redesigned front bumper.

How Does the Subaru Crosstrek Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is better than a lot of the other compact SUVs on the market since it offers standard all-wheel drive, a high ground clearance, along with good reliability ratings as it ages.

The Subaru Forester is another small SUV from Subaru which is around $3,000 more. There’s more passenger room in the Subaru Forester, while the Subaru Crosstrek handles the snow and dirt better with its higher ground clearance. We recommend the Subaru Forester since it’s a more practical daily driver, although both are very good choices.

The Nissan Rogue is a competitor available for $1,000 less. Standard safety technology is better in the Nissan Rogue, while the Subaru Crosstrek has better anticipated long-term reliability ratings. We recommend the Subaru Crosstrek, although both are worth test driving for the 2019 model year.

This is by far the worst vehicle I have ever purchased. The day I made my last payment the a/c system failed. The credit needed, the compressor replaced, expansion valves and coar replaced a a cost of $4300 dollars, this was discovered less than two weeks after I paid 1200 dollars for my 90,000 mile service. It should be noted this car has been serviced every 6,0000 miles from the day I purchased it. Contrary to what is being said about this vehicle, stay away from it. It will not meet your expec6in the end. Trills poor quality car.I boutique my car at Fresno Subaru and that is where I have taken it for my services, this has got to be Subaru's worst service department, very poorly managed and the mechanics are slobs. Last service I got they didn't even take put the plastic on the eats and they left the floor mat paper on the floor, really! What else did these clowns forget. They have done nothing but show they are not worthy of the car service industry.

My Subaru has been very reliable. As a new mom it is perfect for our family in terms of comfort. The space however is an issue and truck space is not enough. Let room for a tall person is small as well. Safety feature are incredible and all up to date. However sometimes radio/screen glitches.

Gas mileage gas mileage gas mileage and it can go off road. It is super easy to handle and relatively comfortable. Reliable, and did I mention the gas mileage. Going from a full size pickup to a small SUV is an adjustment for sure, but you get used to it.

This one was my first Subaru, I am really impressed with the amount of headroom and legroom it has. It offers a lot of safety features, breaking assist, rear braking assist, and more. I most impressed with the eyesight driving assist. This feature I utilize often, it controls you cruising speed and adjusts based on the speed of the car in front of you.

Subaru’s are the most reliable cars that are out there. Their all-wheel drive is the best on the market. They are comfortable and spacious to travel long distance in. They are so comfortable that you can even lay the seats down and camp in it. I could not imagine driving any other vehicle.

The safety features on the Crosstrek are really what sold me on the car. The touch screen display makes navigation easy and allows for quick changes to music/phone/maps.

Good and comfy ride and gas mileage smaller than an SUV but as comfortable.
The vehicle is slow when you take turns. I wish the screen would be bigger. The motor is already noisy for a newer vehicle. It should have more USB charges it only has one in the middle console and it is hard to reach. The gas to mileage is in 10 increments I wish it was a little more precise.

Most comfortable and quiet vehicle I have ever owned. I'll be driving it for the next 15 years. The Subaru Crosstrek is fantastic for all outdoor activities. We live in the mountains have the sport mats so the carpet is not ruined with mud or skis, etc. It handles great in the mountains on ice and snow and looks good too. We also used it to move furniture, it has tons of space when you put the seats down.

The feel of a rugged sedan with the cargo space of a mini SUV.
This vehicle gets great gas mileage for its size, and handles beautifully. The premium model has basic features that make the drive comfortable (CD player, radio, media ports, heated seats, etc). Does not have strong power (v4) though, so start up speed is slower.

CarPlay, Bluetooth and touchscreen.
The Bluetooth and phone connection is not very good. The option to connect your phone to your car via charging USB never works and after awhile the home screen on the touchscreen dash will burn into the screen. Leaving a permanent outline of the icons. The Bluetooth and phone calling will drop a lot and makes it difficult while driving.

Spacious and safety features.
I was looking for a durable car, one with a great reputation in regards to safety features and a bigger space because I drive around my kid, my nieces and nephews so I am very delighted to have my Crosstrek because it falls in that category. I could only purchase the base feature but has an eyesight feature upgrade. I am extremely satisfied as to how it functions, it sensors when being really close to the car ahead so it warns to slow down, it warns you to stay in your lane, and has video camera when backing up for better view. It has very spacious back space for groceries or when buying furniture. I was actually impressed how I was able to fit my whole entire room stuff when I moved out, of course not including my bed and drawers. Overall, I am glad to owned and currently enjoying it.

This brand as a whole is super reliable. I have taken it on many trips, off road, through winter weather, hills, mountains, etc. With no issues. Subaru Crosstrek starlink system.
The car drives really well. It is smooth and can handle rough dirt roads when it has to. For the most part all of the technology features work really well, but sometimes the starlink system has trouble finding and connecting to my phone with Bluetooth, and sometimes even plugging it in to use CarPlay does not work. I have had it for almost 2 years now, there is one recall on the car so far. Besides that, it is the perfect size for me and will continue to be enough space as we begin our family. It does not have not a lot of horsepower, but just enough get-up-and-go where you need it. I did prepaid maintenance and it is been such a breeze. It drives and turns really well. I am 5’3 and cannot put my 75 pound kayak on top without any issues. It is just the right height for me. The seats are comfortable and the bells and whistles make long distance drives a breeze and comfortable. I was able to move my room from California to Idaho with room to spare.

All wheel. Superb mpg. Sirius satellite services. Off and on road capable.
Perfect road trip vehicle. Also provides plenty of comfort for any off road trek of stay. I love the online mobile access. Sirius radio is a great feature if you travel farther north. Seats 5 comfortably. Also plenty of sleep space if you needed a quick nap.

Subaru Crosstrek and it is features.
I really like it there are a lot of safety features. There is also a lot of space in the car for a lot of people. It is very good on gas and does not take a lot to fill up. It also has all the latest technology. It has built in seat warmers which is also good and USB ports.

Cool grey khaki is the new black!
I love my new Subaru Crosstrek! The vehicle came with rubber floor mats that are a must have for my family- 3 dogs and a kid! There are a ton of features that make this car awesome- Bluetooth connectivity, apple carplay, excellent safety rating, sunroof, unique colors, excellent gas mileage, etc. The car is comfortable and roomy as to be expected from a midsize car. I have had zero mechanical (or otherwise) issues! It is super fun and easy to drive/ maneuver/ handle whether in bad weather or winding roads on a sunny day. I love that it sits a bit higher than an average sedan but not quite as high as a truck. One of the extra features that comes with all Subarus is the Subaru community; it is a blast to be a part of. These people love there vehicles and for good reason!

A few great features of my Subaru Crosstrek.
The Crosstrek is a sporty, reliable and work-horse of a vehicle. I travel a great deal for my job as a hospice nurse and have put 40,000 miles on my vehicle in just under 2 years. So far, I have only had to take my car in for routine maintenance. I love the heated seats, hands-free talking and the easy handling when I drive.

I love my Subaru Crosstrek!
I love my Subaru! It is a great car for taking my dog places due to the easy to clean rubber mats. The Crosstrek make offers a really unique and fun range of colors which is what really attracted me to the car. It is durable enough to take up into the mountains which is important to me. It gets good gas mileage which has been a lifesaver for me and has great built in safety features. I also love apple CarPlay. Only complaints I have is in the front there is a little cubby under the display to put stuff but things constantly slide out and there are no cupholders in the back. I also would love a sunroof but the car itself performs very well and is the car of choice when my boyfriend or friends and I are going somewhere.

Love the Subaru Crosstrek!
This car has been problem-free so far. The stereo is terrific, it rides comfortably, it is sporty, and has many great features. I love being part of the Subaru family where the company seems to be doing some great things within the community at large.

The apple car play is great and the USB is located in the center console.
This car is a great purchase. It feels incredibly safe while maintaining the feeling of luxury. Great sound system, good gas mileage, and most of the bells and whistles you would expect out of a newer car. The adaptive cruise control is definitely our favorite quality. Would buy a second one in a heartbeat.

My vehicle is a pearl white 4WD Subaru limited with heated seats.
I have had no problems with my Subaru, it performs very nicely. I needed a reliable car to get me to school. I live where we get 3-4 feet of snow at a time sometimes and the 4 wheel drive is amazing. The inside is very comfortable I have taken it in a few trips. I really like the way you sit inside, I'm shorter and it fits me nicely for being a bigger car. I also really like the apple carplay and heated seats for the winter.

Safety first with lots of bells and lights.
Easy to drive - sit up high. Many safety features such as window alerts of cars in blind spots, sound alert when not in lane, brake assist, sound alert when car in front moves ahead after a stop. Trunk is roomy - back seat comes down for additional room. Handle makes closure accessible. Back seat sits 3 with 3 seat belts.

Drive just as well in traffic as on a trailhead in the mountains.
I love my Subaru Crosstrek! Living in Colorado, I have access to both the mountains and the city life, and I have absolutely no problem driving in either location. The gas mileage is fantastic, maintenance is so easy to keep up with, and it drives like a dream. It is a comfortable ride and fun to drive, and I feel safe in gridlock traffic or on the trailhead.

Great car but glitchy technology.
Overall the vehicle is great. I love the sporty style of the car. The interior is very well made. Subaru has proven to be very reliable cars and this is why I chose to buy this car. The AWD is fantastic and hugs the road. The only thing I am not satisfied with is how glitchy the phone connection can be. Sometimes my music will only play if I have the google maps open. Or sometimes music will only play on the back speakers.

Great car! Overall my Subaru Crosstrek is a great car.
My Subaru is a great car. I love the safety features it has like maintained lane alerts, object alerts for the sides back and front. Auto slow down and braking if you are too close to a vehicle in front of you. The backup camera is also another great feature. The one touch lock and unlocking of the doors is awesome. The only downside to my Subaru Crosstrek is the angle of the windshield. I live in a very sunny place and the sun visors are very small compared to the size of the windshield.

Amazing safety features and handling!
The Subaru Crosstrek performs drives smoothly. The eyesight feature is very useful especially on road trips to help with safe driving. It helps the car stay in lane, promotes signaling, and tracks distance from cars ahead. It is not too big to cause inconvenience with parking but not too small to help with moving big items such as furniture. The only negative is there are no automatic locks.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek - the crossover to buy today!
I love the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. It is a perfect mix between adventure vehicle and commuter vehicle. It safely gets me across town or up a mountain. It is a wonderful blend of functional and luxury. I really enjoy being able to put the back seats down and lug around hiking/snowboarding gear as well as furniture or larger objects without a problem.

User friendly and drives smoothly.
No issues with my car and I have had it for almost 2 years. Runs perfectly every time, just like I just bought it. Easy to fold down and unfold the back row. Automatically connects my phone to Bluetooth so I do not have to plug it in for music. Really enjoyable to drive.

Subaru Crosstrek: best midsize SUV.
AWD. Great gas mileage. 3 trim options (I have the limited which adds heated seats, which is a must for cold winters). Awesome tech features come standard (touch screen with android/apple car play- depending on the year, backup camera, Sirius XM). Affordable. Reliable. Sporty. Comfortable seats. Great choice of colors.

Fun, affordable crossover that has your back!
We love our Subaru Crosstrek! Not only is it great on gas, reliable and has plenty of cargo space for us, the safety features of insight are great! From the wide angle backup camera to blind spot detection sensors we have never felt safer in a vehicle as much as we do in the Crosstrek.

The safety of the Subaru.
I love my car and all the features it comes with. There are a ton of safety features that keep me from making mistakes. The only thing I wish, was that the engine had a little more horsepower. Not for pulling power, but for city driving when you need to get up to speed fast.
