The 2019 Subaru Impreza lasts around 200,000 miles with some average battery and suspension issues reported. At $16,200 to $23,990, it’s a great value for a compact car with a great all-wheel drive system for the snow.

The stereo system is very easy to use, there’s a lot of cargo space and fuel costs are lower than the competition.

The engine is fairly weak, there are some cheap plastic buttons on the dash and the transmission makes a lot of noise.

Great color! Sleek car, sportier than needed for daily commute.
The tire pressure sensor on the dash came on very shortly after I got the car which was very annoying and the tire has an unexplained gash in it, but other than that I enjoy the car. The sport model looks sleek, though I honestly do not use many of the features. It works well for me.

Appealing to the eye. Great customer service.
Comes with good gas mileage. Purchased at a reasonable price and rate. Nice stylish color. All desired accessories included. The seats are very comfortable. At day of purchase, had excellent customer service. Highly recommended for anybody looking to buy their first car.

The best value hatchback on the market: Subaru Impreza.
This car is extremely reliable, gets great gas mileage, especially on road trips. It has great handling and the controls are very intuitive. The one issue I have had with this vehicle is that the storage space in the vehicle can be a bit limited. Other than that, there are no issues with this car.

Review of my Subaru Impreza.
My Subaru Impreza is an amazing car. When I first got my car I was very happy to choose the Impreza. I think that Subaru is a very good brand to buy from. They are very safe and very reliable. The car drives very nicely and it is very comfortable to drive. The car drives very smoothly and it also has lane assistance so that is fun to have.

Love my Subaru Impreza! Best vehicle purchase I have made!
Very good gas mileage. Safety and driver assistance features exceed my expectations. I especially love the heated seats and the ability to set the distance from vehicle in front of you when using cruise control. Have an occasional issue where it resets my radio presets.

Perfect car for any type of person.
Very spacious and is a gas saver. Drives very smooth and can pick up speed quite well. Has no problems as far as I could tell in the time I have had my vehicle. It is a very universal car for many activities and perfect for a on the go life. Absolutely love.

The new Impreza sport is stylish, fun & without a heavy price tag!
I desire a more sporty looking car - I was looking for a 5 speed transmission, and needed black interior. This car exceeded my expectations. It handles excellent, it is comfortable, it is stylish, and the AWD is a great bonus, especially living in a state that has snow 9 months out of the year. The technology is top notch, with a stylish dash and quick, easy, connectivity to whichever device you utilize. I'd recommend this car to anyone who's looking for a stylish sporty looking vehicle, without a high price tag.

Poor quality
The windshield in these cars are of very poor quality in 8000 miles I have had the windshield replaced twice because they crack so easy from a very small pebble. I would not recommend this car to anyone

Good safety rating as well as reliably.
Sits too low to the ground wish it was higher like the outback. Should have purchased a higher more premium trim. It does have good safety and reliability. Have been a previous outback owner so just got used to the outback. Overall it's a good vehicle.

It’ll run for awhile, but you'll be looking for your next car in a week. Boring!
Very basic “get the job done” car. Acceleration is dreadful, CVT transmission is not good for city driving. Cabin is modern and spacious but ergonomically poor. Electronics and sound system are great. The apple car play is a huge plus. The car has almost no ground clearance which is frustrating.

2019 Subaru Impreza pros/cons.
Silver 2019 Subaru Impreza hatchback. Bought brand new, cloth seats instead of leather has a moonroof. Grill/bumper are not real sturdy, very pliable plexiglass. Overall car has functioned very well in the city and on the highway regarding gas mileage. Ability to clean inside easily I would say is a bit more difficult, surfaces have some textures that are not easily cleaned with standard rags and cleaner.

Good all-wheel drive vehicle that handles well in inclement weather.
Subaru Impreza is a very good basic, all-wheel drive car. It handles very well especially in inclement weather. It is comfortable to drive long distances and gets good gas mileage. Overall a decent car, if you want horsepower this is not the car for you. It can go moderately quick but you will not break any speed records.

Impreza owner who enjoys a 4 wheel drive car with a hatchback.
The car is okay, but does not really have a lot of pick-up. It is reliable, and the ride is all right. I have the hatchback, which I really like, because it is roomy. The service I get on it is excellent. I really appreciate the 4 wheel drive on the car, because I live in an area where it snows.

Not bad at all, great for getting around and reliable in snow.
Good car, reliable for just getting where you want to go. Sound system is adequate, easy to change up the settings. Comfortable interior with a good amount of space for the car’s overall size. Trunk is great for storing groceries and other items. Wouldn't consider is a particularly fancy car, but it certainly does its job.

What Do Critics Say About the Subaru Impreza?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Subaru Impreza is one of the top-rated compact cars on the market, with very high owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Impreza at 4.1/5, enjoying the quiet cabin at highway speeds, but doesn’t like the slower acceleration than some competitors.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2019 Impreza a 4.3/5, praising the great standard all-wheel drive system, but owners don’t like the relatively low ground clearance.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Subaru Impreza Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Subaru Impreza include the battery dying, worn-out strut mount bushings, along with some rare reports of the engine stalling. Overall, these problems are similar to some other small cars on the market, leading to average repair costs as it ages.

The battery dying is the most widespread complaint from 2019 Impreza owners, showing up at around 10,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in the Impreza which sometimes drain the battery while the engine is off. Diagnosing the source of the electrical draw costs around $70, while fixing it ranges from $20 to $150, depending on the issue.

Worn-out strut mount bushings have also been mentioned by some Impreza owners at roughly 20,000 miles. If you take your Impreza off-road often then the suspension components will start to wear out. Replacing the bushings costs around $200, depending on local labor rates.

There are some rare reports of the engine stalling as well, showing up at around 25,000 miles. Usually, the problem is simply caused by a sensor issue on the intake, which will lead to an incorrect air-to-fuel ratio. Replacing the sensor costs around $150, making it a fairly minor engine issue.

There are five recalls on the 2019 Subaru Impreza, which is slightly more than some other small cars from the same year. The most serious recalls both cover the fuel pump, which can fail. Subaru will replace the fuel pump on affected models for free. The other recalls cover an engine software update, and damaged reflectors, which Subaru will also fix for free.

How Long Will the 2019 Subaru Impreza Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Subaru Impreza can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than some other compact sedans like the Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than some competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $585 per year.

As a used 2019 Impreza reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the transmission fluid for $150, wheel bearings costing $350, along with intake piping which costs $550.

The Subaru Impreza base is very reliable. Besides a recent recall, it gets me to where I need to be.

accountCircle Geoffrey N

The Subaru Impreza is very reliable, it has few problems with the engine or related parts. In the few months I have been driving it, I have had no problems with it. The only problems it has are occasional issues with the electronics.

accountCircle Shanna M

So far so good no issues since it was bought in may. Transmission variable is not ideal but works as intended

accountCircle Leslie S

How Is the Technology?

Standard entertainment technology is very good, offering a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen along with a more powerful stereo system from Harman Kardon.

The base safety technology is worse than some competitors, only offering a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Forward and reverse automatic emergency braking
  • Steering responsive fog lights
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind spot monitoring

The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $16,200 to $23,990, making it more than a Chevy Cruze or Hyundai Elantra. When new, the price range was $18,595 to $25,690. What Engines Come In the Subaru Impreza?

The 2019 Subaru Impreza comes with a single engine option. It’s equipped with a 2.0-liter flat-four engine that delivers 152 horsepower at up to 32 MPG. This engine is paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). As for its acceleration, the 2019 Impreza with the CVT can reach 0-60 mph in roughly 9 seconds. Those who opt for the manual transmission might experience slightly different performance and economy figures.

What Colors Does the Subaru Impreza Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Subaru Impreza?

The 2019 Subaru Impreza is lauded for its comfort, offering a pleasing driving experience for both drivers and passengers alike. The vehicle features well-cushioned seats with adequate support, making long journeys more endurable. The spacious interior guarantees that even taller passengers have enough legroom and headroom, a feature that’s particularly noticeable in the rear seats.

Furthermore, the Impreza’s suspension system is adept at absorbing road imperfections, providing a smooth ride even on rough terrain. The cabin is well-insulated, minimizing road and wind noise, which contributes to a serene ambiance inside. Add to this a user-friendly infotainment system and easy-to-reach controls, and the Impreza creates an environment where convenience meets comfort. Whether navigating city streets or cruising on the highway, the 2019 Subaru Impreza stands out as a comfortable choice in its class.

How Much Storage Space Does the Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2019 Subaru Impreza offers a versatile storage capacity that caters to both passengers and cargo. For the 5-door hatchback version, there’s a generous 20.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. With the rear seats folded, this expands to an impressive 55.3 cubic feet. To put this into perspective, you can comfortably fit multiple large suitcases, camping equipment, or even a bicycle with its wheels removed in the expanded cargo space.

On the other hand, the sedan variant has a trunk capacity of 12.3 cubic feet, suitable for several travel bags or a week’s worth of groceries. Beyond the trunk or cargo area, the Subaru Impreza is also equipped with small storage areas throughout the cabin. This includes door pockets, a center console compartment, glove box, and cup holders. These compartments are ideal for stowing away personal items like phones, wallets, sunglasses, or drinks, ensuring a clutter-free and organized driving experience.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Subaru Impreza was introduced for the 2017 model year.

2015: Standard rearview camera and cruise control on all models, new 6.2-inch screen available, there’s also an optional advanced safety package.

2016: Subaru Starlink Cloud applications now available on all models.

2017: Fully redesigned for the fifth generation with updated exterior styling, more technology, and new engine choices.

2018: Automatic wipers are now standard on the Premium, Sport, and Limited trims.

2019: More features added to the EyeSight safety system, manual transmission has an improved short-throw shifter.

2020: Minor exterior styling changes including new headlights, now EyeSight driver assistance is standard on Premium and Sport models.

2021: Improved engine management software on the Premium model.

How Does the Subaru Impreza Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Subaru Impreza is a nice compact car, offering a strong all-wheel drive system with a practical interior, making it a good choice for shoppers.

The Subaru Outback is a wagon offered from Subaru which is about $4,000 more. There’s more cargo space available in the Subaru Outback, while the Subaru Impreza offers a sportier driving experience. We recommend the Subaru Outback since the additional ground clearance and room makes it worth the extra money.

The Volkswagen Jetta is another small car available in the same price range. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Volkswagen Jetta, while the Subaru Outback offers a strong all-wheel drive system which is better in the snow and dirt. We recommend the Subaru Outback, although both are very similar and worth test driving to see which you prefer.

Very nimble, very comfortable for bigger drivers.
Coming from a 2002 Honda accord, I was amazed at the front seat space of the 2019 Subaru Impreza, which is a compact car. It has more front space than that accord. It also has a quite smooth CVT transmission generally speaking, though it can hesitate finding a gear at low speeds. The ride is very comfortable, and I did not expect heated seats in a car this size--it's quite nice. Handling is very responsive and acceleration is very good. The infotainment system, if you haven't had one before (I hadn't before this car) takes a few moments to boot up before it can be used, so if you left the volume up loud the last time you were in the car, you'd have to rush to shut it off once it boots (instead of merely turning the radio/player off once the engine starts, as on older vehicles).

Love my car: ac could be stronger, stereo better.
I love my car! Just a few minor complaints. The safety feature that does the automatic braking. It is not very accurate and has slammed on the brakes more than once almost causing someone to rear end me. I would like the option to turn this feature off and have it stay off and not reset every time I turn off the car. Also, the ac could be a little more powerful. It takes a long time for it to cool off the car with the Florida heat. I have sun visor accessory that I bought for like $65 made from Subaru and it does not even fit right. The last thing is that the sound system is very poor.

I really love the way the car drives. It is very smooth. Sometimes the Bluetooth can be funky, but it is still a fantastic car. My favorite feature is the back camera. It really helps me parallel park in the city, especially on the weekends when the city is very crowded with tourists. I love the feature that lets you know when a car in front of you has stopped or moved forward. I also enjoy the look of the car. One thing I have noticed is that the car upholstery soaks up water, which ends up leaving stains on the seat.

2019 Subaru Impreza: great gas mpg, good cargo space and a reliable safe ride.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my vehicle. It gets good gas mileage. It handles well in most road/weather conditions, with the exception of deep snow only because my vehicle is low to the ground and does not get the clearance needed for that type of condition. It has a little less engine power than I am used to in that it takes a little longer to get up to speed but, the 31-33 miles per gallon I get on average makes up for that small issue. It has decent cargo space with the hatchback and the rear seats folded flat. Leg and head room might be a little restrictive for a taller or larger person but, it works just fine for me at 5’5”.

You should always test drive the vehicle before making a decision to purchase.
The car drives so smooth and there isn't a complaint that I have about it. The car does eat up a lot of gas and you don't get enough gas mileage per gallon like other cars designed for economic pricing. The only way to buy a car and like it is to see if you like how the car steers and moves from a test drive other than that I can't recommend something to someone if they haven't been behind the wheel of the vehicle.

Fun car and sharp color to find in a parking lot.
No problems, great gas mileage, great in the snow and ice. Great acceleration and highway driving. I do not drive as much as I used to but do enjoy the car. Great back up camera view, which is helpful if a larger vehicle parks next to you. The wider camera angle helps backing out of a tough spot.

It is very easy to drive, particularly in snow. The all wheel drive is great. It is comfortable and all the car I need. If you need to tow anything you might want something larger. I got it with a stick shift as that is more fun to drive. You do not really need the WRX to enjoy it.

Car is reliable and has good features. I feel very safe driving it. Did have two recalls in the last year which was a little annoying. I like the ability to use the carplay app with my iPhone. Could get better gas mileage as I only get about 30 miles to the gallon or less.

Great car and use it as my primary car! Not too much to say poorly on this. However, the speakers inside are pretty weak and the entertainment system/radio system has problems. The best part is the heads up display built into the dash. It shows kpa, mpg and a lot of other useful info. Great all around car though!

My 2019 Subaru Impreza. It's great but has some flaws.
I have a base model with a manual transmission. The car runs really good and gets decent gas mileage. I do have a problem with the area around my wheels, they tend to squeak when I turn the vehicle left or right. I was fairly bummed out about how fast I got two windshield cracks fairly early since owning the vehicle.

The trim in the car is easy to clean but still very sporty with a little leather and fabric mixture. Additionally the external trim adds a little sportiness.

Love it - thinking of leasing again!
The car is very comfortable, safe, and reliable. I have never had any issues with it in the year that I have leased it. I like how it always notifies me when a car is passing and when I drift over into the shoulder or the next lane. I am thinking of leasing it again but a newer version.

Great car at a reasonable price.
Overall the 2019 Subaru Impreza is a great car. Only downsides are that it could get better gas mileage and some of the baseline models of other subaru’s have better safety features. Other than that it is a great car, and I have had no issues with it at all.

Safety is the number one concern.
I love that safety is the number one concern. The seatbelt noise does not go off after a few minutes, and even gets louder. There is metal bars in each door to help in a t bone crash. Mph is great. It is a smooth ride every time I get in the car. In heavy snow or rain this car is amazing I always have control of the car. The only issue I have with the car is that there is no light in the trunk area so at night I cannot see what I need to get out of the car.

No regrets. Never felt safer!
It has great gas mileage, especially on the Hwy. Smooth driving experience, heated seats, and a great touch screen media base. Safety features are on point. Backup camera and lane assist. Overall no real problems. There have been two recalls since owning this but they were fixed quickly.

Suburbs Impreza: the safest car out there.
I believe that my Subaru Impreza is the most reliable car I have ever had. The safety features such as the hands free phone system is crucial to my everyday commute to school and work. The car will let you know if the vehicle ahead of you has moved and it will let you know if it detects an obstacle. When traveling 6 hours from school to my hometown, this vehicle gives me no problems. During these long drives, it will let me know how long I have been driving. The gas mileage is amazing, with a full tank I can travel up to 300 miles. Overall one of the safest and reliable cars I have had.

Impreza is the perfect sedan.
I love the impreza. Great gas mileage, easy to drive, roomy. The trunk is giant. It is the perfect little sedan that can be for anyone! Personally next I think I will go for a bigger car, I am just more of an suv person but the impreza is a great price and it is a really fantastic car.

The new technology is the car is a huge advantage.
I really like the Subaru Impreza. Car play makes it easy to see directions and play music from my phone. The windows get a little too foggy at times but you just roll them down and they are fine. The car is very good on gas and you get a lot for your money’s worth.

Eyesight is by far the best feature.
Quite honestly I have not have any issues. The eyesight is great. My first month with the car I could have gotten in a wreck. My Impreza detected the car in front had come to a complete stop and my Impreza hit the brakes for me before I could react..

Easily the best car I've ever owned.
Great for pretty much everything. Roof rack for snowboard. Good for camping. AWD is nice in the winter or trying to get to a camping location. Plenty of legroom in the back seats and the hatchback trunk area has plenty of space. I currently get around 30 mpg.

Good safety rating as well as reliably.
Sits too low to the ground wish it was higher like the outback. Should have purchased a higher more premium trim. It does have good safety and reliability. Have been a previous outback owner so just got used to the outback. Overall it's a good vehicle.

Love my Impreza for all the features and reliability!
I love everything about it. It is a cool car that is reliable. It has cool features like apple CarPlay. I have a great warranty and I bring it in and they tune it up. It is comfortable and stylish. My Subaru gets great gas mileage and I can monitor how good it is by tapping a button.

Safe, reliable and sporty.
Love this car, love the safety features. Got into a bad car accident and saved my life. Very comfortable ride and tons of storage. Big enough to load it up with whatever you need but small enough to feel sporty. After driving this car it would be difficult for me to switch to a different brand.

Fun Subaru to drive. Super cool!
The Impreza works great. The gas mileage is nice and the car runs smoothly. I really like the touch screen display because of the size and connection with smartphones. There is a decent amount of space in the back as well as the trunk. I have not had any problems with the car.

My car is the perfect car to drive around town or take a road trip in.
I have wanted this car for so long, I love the drive and features. Subarus in general have always been my favorite and most reliable car. The smart features in my car such as carplay are my favorite, I love that it pull up maps and music directly from my phone.

Great car, great brand, no complaints.
I have never had any issues. It is fun to drive, plenty of room and performs well. I have bought nothing but Subaru for years, and have always been satisfied. We've always gotten high resale value as well. Great audio, comfortable, good on gasoline. White paint.

My car is everything I wanted it to be
I ordered this car from the factory and it has all the bells and whistles I wanted. The stereo is fantastic and added features like eyesight, backup camera with warning lights, blind spot warning, and my personal favorite, adaptive cruise control. I love this car and hope it lasts a long time.
accountCircle Michael B on December 13, 2020
Excellent value, however not perfect.
Cannot see front of vehicle making parallel parking very difficult. Cruise control does not work in poor weather conditions. Extremely low and vulnerable to scratches on bumpy roads. Otherwise great visibility and ease of use. Great value and looks good as well.

You do not even hear the car when it is running, you barely feel it when driving.
It is a reliable car and does really good in all sorts of weather. The AWD portion is an added bonus, in addition to the paddle shifters. It makes it to where the car can be taken pretty much anywhere. It is a super fast, smooth riding vehicle, and is super comfortable. Makes long trips worth it.

2019 Subaru Impreza sport.
So far we've had to fix multiple recalls on our 2019 Impreza but other than that we love it! Gets great gas mileage and does great in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Haven't had any issues driving in all weather conditions. We previously owned a 2016 Impreza and enjoy this one just as much. We love that it comes with apple play and the back up camera. The heated seats are a nice feature on cold mornings. The backseat is somewhat small feeling, especially with a car seat back there. We had to put the car seat in the middle otherwise one of the front seats has to be too far forward. It is definitely tight feeling with multiple people in the back. The back hatch area feels really roomy and we have used it to move some smaller furniture. It is great that the seats fold down to haul even more stuff/ larger items. Overall, it is a compact car and we knew that when purchasing it and have enjoyed it over the last year. I would recommend purchasing a hatchback Impreza! Great bang for your buck!

Subaru summary in a nutshell.
It is a great car, I have only been driving it for about 6 or 7 months and only have about 6000 miles on it but I do long drives for about 3 and a half hours to 4 hours to go to school and this car is very reliable and I trust that it can get me to my destination efficiently and safely. Even should I get in an accident, I believe this car has a lot of safety features to where I would not be critically wounded.

Most Subaru's are made to be off road vehicles so they have great stability.
I have never felt unsafe while driving this car! I have driven through snowstorms and pouring rain where I cannot see 10 feet in front of me and I have never been scared or had an issue. I know my car will continue to handle at its best in any conditions!
