2019 Subaru Outback Review: Spacious Wagon With Excellent Long-Term Reliability Ratings

Alex Showalter
Dec 17, 2022

The 2019 Subaru Outback lasts around 250,000 miles with minor windshield and battery issues. At $21,950 to $28,525, it’s a decent value for a comfortable midsize SUV with a fantastic all-wheel drive system.

likeFilled The Good
Passenger room is great throughout the cabin, the visibility is excellent with all the glass and there’s a lot of standard safety equipment.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The four-cylinder engine is slow, the integrated roof rack system has proprietary connections and the steering feels loose.

Is the 2019 Subaru Outback a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2019 is a good year for the Subaru Outback since there are no serious problems paired with a great all-wheel drive system. Owner reviews praise the smooth suspension, advanced safety technology, along with the nice seats.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are nice for an SUV, seating is supportive on longer drives, although cargo space is a bit lower than the competition.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no major mechanical problems found on the 2019 Subaru Outback. Models from 20132015 have a lot of engine problems. We recommend 20162022, which are much more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is weak from the standard 4-cylinder engine, while the V6 is similar to other midsize SUVs on the market.
  • Safety 10/10 – The 2019 Outback is a very safe SUV earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. Subaru’s EyeSight is standard on all models with a rearview camera, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control,  along with automatic emergency braking. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring as well as reverse automatic braking.
  • Gas Mileage 9/10 – Fuel economy is great at up to 28 MPG, giving 518 miles of range from the 18.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $60 cheaper than average, at $173 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2019 Subaru Outback is a great value since it’s cheaper than other midsize SUVs while also depreciating slowly.

Subaru is all about safety first.
This car has very good safety features. The doors lock automatically now. The radio also has better choices for volume control. Plenty of room for passengers and cargo plus a cargo rack on the roof. The fuel door is on the passenger side of the car for safety also.

Love my 2019 Subaru Outback!
It's one month old and I've had no problems other than when my daughter rides with me there is no room in the front for my purse which is a nuisance. It is otherwise very comfortable, quiet, has a smooth ride and all the bells and whistles since we got the top "Touring" model. It has the larger engine so has lots of power. Its lock system seems to be inconsistent...or I just haven't figured it out.

Super family car with amazing safety features.
This vehicle is super room, very comfortable, and I always feel very safe while driving it. A trip from FL to NY felt like nothing driving in this car. The safety features and AWD is amazing. I absolutely love this car and would recommend it to anyone.

Automatic braking saved the day at least one time.
The only problem I have had to date is a dead battery when it was a year old. They replaced it and so far no problems. The car does not get listed mileage but we seldom leave town so all city miles. Rides good but could be quieter but still is quieter than some others I tried. In my opinion it is not a good survey road car.

Road trip car, great for pets and people!
My Subaru is incredibly reliable. I have never had any issues. The back in the outback is very spacious. Great car for road trips and dogs! I would recommend the leather interior as it is easier to clean. Subaru as a company has always taken great care of me!

This car is smooth, reliable and easy to operate.
This vehicle is smooth; reliable and easy to operate. I have had this vehicle for over 1 year and a half now and it is still in the best condition without any problems. I def recommend buying it. You will not be disappointed. This car is also very useful with snow because the tires are made for that. The car has a beautiful black color and the rims are silver. The shape mostly resembles a sports car.

Love my outback and all the great features.
Outback is the best..Love the comfort and trim. Love taking long drives. Love the fact it is higher off the ground makes it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. I love the cargo cover and the all weather mats and the seat back protectors and cargo mat.

2019 Subaru outback 3.6r used in upstate NY.
Car is awesome in snow. I have had many full size SUVs and this car puts them all to shame in the snow. I am not really a fan of the eyesight safety features. Wish you could shut off the adaptive cruise permanently. A little more sound deadening would be appreciated.

Sound system is awful
My 2019 Outback has had nothing but problems with the sound system since day 1. Getting it to play and properly identify songs from mp3 on media is impossible. I did not have a smart phone when I bought the car. I called the dealership before buying a new phone to assure it would be compatible. Only AFTER I bought the new phone and made 2 trips to Steve Moyer Subaru in Leesport did they tell me the phone is not compatible. They have nothing but excuses for all the problems. Things don't work, but it's never the car's fault. I have no idea how they stay in business if that how customers are treated.

Eating front tires???
I love that the car was made to my liking and the price was good. But the noise sounding like a wheel hub... Told it was the tires. At 12,000 and 19,000 miles. Recommended new tires on the front both times. Anyone else eating tires and not driving sumo wrestlers around? I would otherwise give this vehicle a 10 star rating. I absolutely love it otherwise.

Subaru outback is a big disappointment.
The radio broke after 2 months and it took 2 months to be repaired. The air conditioning does not have enough vents in the back so anyone seated back there gets uncomfortably hot. The car seems cheap, especially for the price and it is uncomfortable. I feel like it is built for a man and the lumbar doesn't support in the correct spot and the neck is not right and I get neck and back aches after driving too long. The electronics seem wonky and buggy as well.
accountCircle Ld T
It is a small car on the inside versus the look on the outside.
It is smaller than I thought. It still hydroplanes. And it hits every single pothole. I wish that it was a smoother ride, it seems like it takes more gas. I do like the things that tell you when other cars are coming and lane gliding. It is currently having a recall that I didn't expect.
accountCircle Ana P
Good value for the price and gas mileage.
It gets good gas mileage. Easy to get in and out. Wish it would be a bit bigger. I like the interior. The dual seat heaters. Appreciate the driver assist systems such as the backup camera. Also, having access to the radio control on the steering wheel. I would've liked a better color selection. Do like the interior material.

Excellent car but needs work on media technology!
Love everything about this car except the media center. Apple play is finicky and sometimes I have to restart everything to get a connection. The car has ample space, it is excellent in the snow. The eye site tech is very useful especially on long trips. We leased this car because of excellent safety ratings.

What Do Critics Say About the Subaru Outback?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Subaru Outback is a nice alternative to other midsize SUVs since it’s more efficient, with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Outback at 4.1/5, praising the excellent off-road capabilities, but doesn’t like the loose steering feel.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Outback a 4.5/5, enjoying the spacious and comfortable interior, but owners don’t like the weak 4-cylinder engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Subaru Outback Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Subaru Outback include cracked windshields, excessive battery drain, as well as some steering wobbles. Overall, these issues are minor compared to many other SUVs on the market, leading to lower repair bills, too.

Cracked windshields are the most widespread complaint from 2019 Subaru Outback owners at around 10,000 miles. The original windshields in some batches are weaker than average, leading to them cracking easily. Replacing the windshield costs around $900, depending on local labor rates.

Excessive battery drain has also been mentioned on several 2019 Subaru Outback models in the first 5,000 miles. There are a lot of electronic accessories which occasionally drain the battery while the vehicle is off. Diagnosing the source of the problem costs around $100, while a new battery is roughly $250.

Steering wobbles have also shown up on some Outback models at roughly 7,000 miles. Usually, the issue is caused by unbalanced wheels which can be fixed for under $50. Another common issue which can cause wobbling steering is bad alignment, which is $100 to fix.

There are 3 recalls on the 2019 Subaru Outback, which is similar to other midsize SUVs its age. The most serious two recalls cover the fuel pump, which can fail. Subaru dealers will replace the fuel pump on affected models for free. The other recall covers spot weld issues on only 2,100 vehicles, making it rare.

How Long Will the 2019 Subaru Outback Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Subaru Outback can last around 250,000 miles, which is slightly lower than the top-rated Toyota 4Runner. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other midsize SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $479 per year.

As a used 2019 Subaru Outback reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the radiator fan for $350, CV joints costing around $400, along with the radiator hoses which cost $250.

accountCircle Eileen P

I haven't had any problems with it yet and I hope it stays that way. So far, it is been reliable. I cannot complain.

accountCircle Lorelei M

So far no issues. Very reliable so far, it is also very new to me and the vehicle itself is almost brand new.

accountCircle Fatma Y

Very reliable. I have had it a short time and have not experienced any problems. If you research the Outback they have some of the best safety ratings on the market.

accountCircle Roger G

So far our Subaru Outback has not had any problems with it at all so far. It gets great mileage and its safety features work flawlessly. I know I can depend on it to keep us safe..

accountCircle Kathryn O

Yes, so far! We have had Outbacks in the past and they have gone for over 150,000 miles. The room is amazing and the new safety features are great!

accountCircle Claire L

No so far it has no problems to report, I have had good luck with all the Subaru cars I have had so far

accountCircle Cynthia Y

I haven't noticed many problems. The windows should be tinted. The car has a little lag in pick up too

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is excellent compared to other midsize SUVs, offering a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Optional upgrades include a more powerful stereo, as well as a larger 8-inch touchscreen.

Safety technology is fantastic since the 2019 Subaru Outback comes standard with Subaru EyeSight safety system. Standard safety features include a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, as well as adaptive pivoting headlights.

Is the 2019 Subaru Outback a Good Value?

The 2019 Subaru Outback is a good value since it offers decent reliability ratings with relatively low ownership costs. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $21,950 to $28,525, making it cheaper than a Honda Pilot or Jeep Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $26,345 to $38,995. Depreciation is better than other SUVs, only losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Subaru Outback came out in 2015, and was replaced by the sixth generation in 2020.

2015: Fully redesigned for the fifth generation with new styling and engine choices.

2016: StarLink apps added to the stereo system, steering system improved.

2017: Touring model added to the lineup with more luxury.

2018: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added, minor exterior styling changes.

2019: EyeSight safety technology standard on all models.

2020: Fully redesigned for the sixth generation with new interior, exterior, and technology.

2021: Adaptive LED headlights standard on all models, rear seat reminder added.

How Does the Subaru Outback Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Subaru Outback is a great midsize SUV, offering a strong standard all-wheel drive system, decent ground clearance, along with high long-term reliability ratings as they age.

The Subaru Forester is a smaller SUV made by Subaru which costs around $1,000 less. Where the Subaru Forester stands out is with a sportier driving experience, while the Subaru Outback offers more passenger room. We recommend the Subaru Outback since it’s a more practical choice worth the extra money.

The Toyota RAV4 is another SUV which costs around $1,500 more. Ownership costs are slightly lower on the Toyota RAV4, while the Subaru Outback has a bit more passenger room in the back seats. We recommend the Toyota RAV4, although both are very good SUVs worth taking a look at.

Front passenger Seat Airbag System Failed after 40 months, which is just out of 36 months warranty period..... No collision at all. Cost of sensor and seat replacement is well over $2K from retailer. Contacted SOA for safety concerns, due to potential death without airbag protection if involved into accident. After over one month negotiation, "goodwill" covers portion of the cost, but the repair price with retailer is still hard to digest…..Go buy Subaru if you have decent amount of spared money to cover this essential

I wish the back seat had an air conditioning vent. I also wish the remote start would not turn off when I open the door. The car is very comfortable. Drives great! Its sleek and very comfortable to ride, very smooth and luxurious inside and out. Its fully loaded with all the bells and whistles, it's a smart vehicle that alerts the driver of danger such as veering off the road, getting too close to another vehicle, a vehicle is coming along side near your blind spot, a vehicle has moved ahead, and will stop to avoid a crash. Dependable-great pick up-good space for items in back-looks nice not low to ground so when you're driving your higher than most cars for better viewing traffic also what to enjoy the most is inside the cabin area. Subaru Outback is the best family car ever!
The Subaru Outback has been a great reliable car. In the 9 months we've owned it, we have had no problems. It is very comfortable, even for a cross-country road trip with our family of 3 and our pet dog. The trunk area is spacious. The performance has been fantastic. I haven't had the car for very long, but I am very pleased with it. I love the button adjustments for the driver's seat so that I can make it more personalized. One issue that I know was corrected in the 2020 is the location of the clock. While you are driving, it is hidden by your right arm.

Great value and drive, could do without auto-drive features.
Powerful with great pickup, easily handles in bad weather, comfortable steering and seating for all passengers. Lots of space in the back for hauling and easy maneuverability of seats. The “auto driving” features, including lane departure and automatic steering can be annoying. The steering wheel will just lock up occasionally to prevent lane departures, even when your blinker is on, which is odd.

We have had zero issues with our car and we have had it for over two years now. We love the size of the car especially because we have a child. This is my second Subaru outback I leased, there a great vehicle in all weather conditions I have ever owned, the one I own now is a six cylinder I like it better than the four cylinder I owned the first time, the Subaru outback is comfortable and easy to drive good vision all around the car.

Great features, reliable, and comfortable.
Good performance, comfortable. Kind of expensive for the features but really reliable and sturdy. Quite powerful but quiet. The car has a lot of space for passengers and baggage. Overall great car. No problems are experienced so far. I love the car. It is a great purchase.

The best outback ever Subaru has made to this date.
This is my fourth Subaru outback limited, white, with black leather, 3.6 boxer engine. The care is used mainly for everyday needs; back and forth to the grocery store, taking the dogs out on trips, taking two bicycles with us also. Our outback is very comfortable and has great performance with 30 mpg on the open road. The outback has a lot of room for storage especially when folding the rear seat down. Our outback is a very important SUV for home needs as well. The employees where we obtained the outback are very friendly and I take it for service where I obtained it. I have not had one problem with any of my outback's and this outback is following the same trait, no issues. I have every feature the outback offered and I have found this outback to be the safest one yet with advising me about the road around me. If you were looking for a mid-size SUV you must check it out.

My Subaru experience by a person who does not like big vehicles.
Even though it is a utility vehicle, it still water plains and spins out in bodies of water. I think that it has the greatest shocks than any other car that I have driven. I love the fact that I can back up with the rear view picture. I also love the fact that my car has heated seats. It has the best way to tell if a car is coming up on you.

The car has more active features than I use. Love it.
My biggest complaint is that when it rains and you open the door, water runs along the bottom of the door and drips. I enjoy the ability to adjust the seat in multiple ways. The lights on the side mirrors flash when a car is passing and in the dead vision area.

Eyesight technology saved me.
The 2019 outback has six computers. The safety features are superb. I have the limited model which has Subaru eyesight technology. This feature has saved me from several rear end collisions. If the car detects a slowing or stopped vehicle ahead of me, it applies the brakes. I also enjoy the adaptive cruise control, especially on long trips. The car has enormous storage and has helped me move several pieces of furniture for my daughter and my mother in law. We also purchased a small chest freezer and it fit perfectly in the cargo area.

Love the safest car in America.
Computer glitches here and there. The backup sensors will slam on the brakes when you are reversing down a hill or driveway. This car feels super safe and is comfortable. Has a lot of storage. Super stylish model. Features are convenient and updated.

The safety features of the eyesight system. Ground clearance.
The outback is a family friendly SUV. The performance off road ie. Sand and mud is excellent. Gas mileage is the best I have ever had in a vehicle. There is plenty of height and leg room for my son that is 5'10. The special features of the eyesight, automatic tailgate, all weather mats, the protective gear in the trunk and on the back seat fold down, power driver's seat, ground clearance from ground to vehicle are all features that had drawn me to Subaru. The safety ratings were a must when choosing Subaru. The only issue that I have is that it is not touchless entry meaning having your key on you but not having to use the key fob to enter. If you are wanting to drag race or speed off fast from a traffic light this is not the vehicle for you.

The outback - perfect cat for an adventurer!
This car has a smooth ride. The ac makes hot and humid summer days enjoyable for a nice drive. The Subaru outback offers a safe ride for long drives off the beaten path! The seat warmers manage to keep you warm in the dead of winter. We've taken our Subaru to the icy mountains of Vermont, the woods of upstate New York, and even the city streets of NYC. The outback offers an affordable luxury car for anyone on the market! We've had our Subaru for about a year now and we've had no mechanical issues at all. Service is easy with the local Subaru service center providing affordable and friendly service. We absolutely love the sleek and modern touch screen display. In the matte rid seconds, we have our Spotify station up and google maps navigating us to our destination. The backup cam makes backup parking so much more easy. We love how the screen offers guidelines helping the parallel park seem like an easy task on a busy street!

Road trip. It is very comfortable for long trips. We have taken it to Yosemite.
It drives very smooth. We like it because it has leather seats. Also it has an element that the steering wheel will heat up for you when it is cold outside. It is compact enough to fit in our garage. We do travel a lot with sports that we are involved with and it fits everything.

2019 Subaru outback features.
No problems. Runs well, easy to care for and has great safety features. No mechanical or technical problems. Runs very efficiently and has great gas mileage. I enjoy having features such as lame assist, backup camera, and auto braking if an obstacle is detected.

The coolest high-teching car I have ever driven.
I have had zero issues with the car thus far. The features are all really cool and slick. The plus is that it is a super safe car and I feel very comfortable driving it. The eyesight features tells you when you are going over the lines and will set a speed a certain distance from the car in front of you.

Subaru outback 2019- review of vehicle.
This car is very comfortable to drive. With smart cruise control and obstacle detection, it assured that you are driving safely the whole time. The seats are very comfortable and everyone has more than enough room to stretch out. The seat warmers in the front and back make sure no one is left cold for too long.

Subaru is all about safety first.
This car has very good safety features. The doors lock automatically now. The radio also has better choices for volume control. Plenty of room for passengers and cargo plus a cargo rack on the roof. The fuel door is on the passenger side of the car for safety also.

Love my Subaru outback- best vehicle to own in Alaska!
I absolutely love my Subaru! I live in Alaska, and it handles so well on the icy/snowy roads. I bought blizzaks for my winter tires and they have worked and handled perfect. The gas mileage is great! I commute about 1 hour 4 days a week, and it makes it a lot easier to get to work.

Great car, small issues but love it.
Battery dies reset a lot of things. Annoying. Great car otherwise. Great Mileage. Good storage but small enough to drive around. Love the temp weather system. Having a smartphone is a must for the android and apple auto features. The build in screen features are lame.
