The 2016 Toyota 4Runner lasts around 350,000 miles with only minor sensor and alignment issues. At $25,725 to $37,325, it’s expensive, but worth it if you’re looking for a capable and extremely dependable midsize SUV.

Is the 2016 Toyota 4Runner a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2016 is a great year for the 4Runner, it is a bit outdated in terms of technology, however, the amazing reliability helps it earn a high overall score. Owner reviews praise the off-road performance, low ownership costs, as well as the roomy interior.

It's different and really nice and will really hold Its value over time.
I love the look of it and the performance. It is also very safe and reliable. I have the TRD Pro model and I get compliments on it all the time because it's different than other standard SUVs.

The car is beautiful and brand new.
The only problem I have with it is the trunk space which is very small and not convenient for long trips. However you can fold the last 2 seats if you have no more than 5 passengers. My family loves it and so do I. Overall, I love the car and it is been a good 4 years so far.

Toyota 4runner. Has the best ride and coolest features in a SUV.
I am absolutely in love with my Toyota 4runner. The vehicle itself is gorgeous. It has a nice sleek design. I would consider it a larger car, but very slim and not too bulky for a SUV. The trunk space is very roomy. I love that the back window rolls down which is probably my favorite feature. The front end is so mean looking but elegant. I would 10/10 recommend owning or purchasing this car. You will not own another brand!

I can't change anything about my car nothing bad has come about.
My vehicle has had no problems since I've purchased my car back in 2016. I believe Toyota has one of the best models of cars that is durable and very reliable. Performance on my car is wonderful! Everything I ever wanted I found in my Toyota 4runner. I will always recommend Toyota to friends and family.

Love every piece of my vehicle. Safe, fun, perfect size. Looks amazing. I wish I could purchase the limited edition!
It is super safe to drive anywhere. I know it will protect me in the worst of accidents if I ever have to endure one.

Great SUV for a small family.
I really like my SUV it is small enough to fit most places and easy to drive. The only complaint I have is that the third row seating is a little crammed in the back. The backup camera is very impressive and high quality. The only other complaint I would have is that if I bought it again I would upgrade the cloth seats to leather they are a bit stiff on long rides.

The Bluetooth! Everything is done while my hands are still on the wheel!
I absolutely love everything about my car! It is not too big to where I feel like I am driving a bus but it is spacious enough for my 3 year old! I can accommodate my friends to ride along and drive in style while doing it! I have never had any problems and I have had it for about a year now. I wouldn't change a thing, I love it!

Worst 4Runner I’ve ever owned
This is my 4th and final 4Runner I will purchase it’s garbage compared to previous years first the wires and seats are made with soy products which attracts animals to crawl up and start chewing wires it smells like vanilla to them, the car isn’t as sturdy as previous years feels like plastic, Toyota Entune is a joke they keep removing apps & their navigation SUCKS!!!!

Very smooth ride city and highways.
It is a smooth, quiet ride. Very roomy. Has enough cargo space to haul large furniture items. It is a gas guzzler, though. It is used for my husband's work and he has to fill up at least twice a week. In the future, we will definitely purchase a smaller car, even though we love SUVs. We could save much more money with a smaller, gas friendly car. I have to say the 4runner has been pretty reliable with 140,000 in just 4 years. Routine maintenance has been all that is needed. Sadly, the gas situation is the deal breaker.

Toyota 4runner review... Mainly about the seats.
The main issue I have with my car is the level of comfort. Especially in the driver's seat. No matter how you adjust it, it is just always an awkward uncomfortable feeling. However the back seats are amazing. Not only can they lay down for extra room they recline! Overall tho, it is a good vehicle.
accountCircle Rachel W
The family car that is so much fun to drive.
It is a great car, I love the room in the back for storage/putting groceries and strollers. It is a minivan that looks a lot better than a minivan! The gas mileage is also a plus, I do not notice that I am filling it up too often. Also I really like the leather seats, I didn't think it would make that much of a difference but it does.

Comfortable and a very reliable car.
I love my 2016 Toyota, it is a very nice car and a good brand. I cannot reply on it and not worry about it breaking down while I am on the road. It does not get light while speeding on the highway. I love it, I recommend it to everyone, it has amazing features.

One interesting detail of my car is the computer system.
My vehicle is great for outdoors. It is not recommended for big families of 4 and more, since the seats are so closely packed. I prefer small cars, so I do not like it that much, but overall it's pretty good. It also is strong and can pull heavy things. My vehicle is also great for snow and hard terrains that normal cars would usually struggle with.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota 4Runner?

  • Consumer Reports says the 4Runner is a great old-school body-on frame SUV with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 4Runner at 4.5/5, praising the strong V6 engine, but doesn’t like the cramped third row.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 4Runner a 4.6/5 enjoying the excellent off-road capabilities, but some owners don’t like the truck-like driving experience.

What Common Problems Does the 2016 Toyota 4Runner Have?

Common problems found on the 2016 Toyota 4Runner include a check engine light, pulling to one side, as well as some exhaust system issues. Overall, these problems are very minor compared to other midsize SUVs, leading to low repair costs as well.

A check engine light is a problem mentioned by some owners in the first 20,000 miles. There are many reasons a check engine light may turn on. The most likely cause is a worn-out gas cap, which costs around $30 to replace. Another common source is an intake sensor issue, which costs around $70 to swap out.

Pulling to one side while driving is another issue which shows up in the first 30,000 miles. Improper alignment is usually the source of the problem. If you take your 4Runner off-road a lot, the uneven terrain can throw the wheels out of alignment. Getting it aligned costs $80 to $150, depending on local labor rates.

Exhaust system issues also show up on some 4Runner models at around 15,000 miles, leading to a warning light on the dash. The EVAP system throws a code when there is a sensor issue. Diagnosing and then replacing the affected sensor usually costs around $150.

There are 8 minor recalls on the 2016 4Runner, which is better than many other midsize SUVs. The recalls cover load carrying labels, air bags, as well as a loose roof rack. None of the issues are mechanically serious, and Toyota will replace the parts on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2016 Toyota 4Runner Last?

A well maintained 2016 Toyota 4Runner can last over 350,000 miles, which is even longer than the highly-rated Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than average according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $492 per year.

Since many used 2016 Toyota 4Runner models on the market have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to change the A/C drier assembly for $375, battery cable terminals for $50, as well as the emergency brake cable which is around $500.

accountCircle Rachel P

Yes, it is very reliable. I have not had any problems with mine. I have replaced the battery and upgraded the headlights, but only to make it better for myself.

accountCircle Amy B

Yes, it is extremely reliable. I wish however the warranty would've lasted longer. I am overdue for a maintenance 25k check now.

accountCircle Pamela D

It is very reliable. I haven't had any problems with mine at all. Like no problems really not even tire pressure problems.

accountCircle Bronwyn s

No it is totally reliable if maintained will last forever. It is completely reliable and versatile. I am sure it will last for at least 15 years.

accountCircle Ali C

My 4Runner has not experienced any maintenance or other service problems and has been a very reliable vehicle.

accountCircle Julie B

I think the 2016 Toyota 4Runner is reliable due to all the safety standards that it have. Some of the problems that it potentially has sometimes is the quality of the products

accountCircle Kyle L

No problems, it's built to last. I'm pretty hard on it. Only downside would be the gas mileage. But it gets me wherever I need to be, in all types of weather

accountCircle Leah O

Very reliable! I drive long distances and long times a lot and every single time it has not let me down no matter how hard I push it. I haven't had a problem with it yet but I know it will come eventually with old age.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2016 4Runner with a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen stereo system as well as an optional JBL stereo system. Safety technology is worse than some competitors since the 4Runner only has a standard rearview camera, with optional sensors. There’s no advanced safety technology available.

Is the 2016 Toyota 4Runner a Good Value?

Yes, the 2016 Toyota 4Runner is a great value since it’s one of the longest lasting midsize SUVs on the market. Blue book prices range from $25,725 to $37,325, making it more expensive than a Honda Pilot or Mazda CX-9. When new, the price range was $34,010 to $44,360. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 7% of its current value per year.

The Toyota Highlander is another midsize SUV which costs around $5,000 less. Passenger room is better in the Toyota Highlander, while the Toyota 4Runner is more capable off-road. We recommend the Toyota Highlander for most shoppers since it has more safety technology, although both are outstanding choices and it comes down to personal driving preferences.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a competitor which starts at roughly $6,000 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Toyota 4Runner offers better reliability ratings. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner since they hold their value with fewer mechanical problems.

2016 Toyota 4runner limited edition.
I have a 2016 Toyota 4runner limited edition, in blizzard pearl. It has black leather interior with 3rd row seating that folds down when not in use, front seats are air conditioned seats that blow hot and cold air. It is a 4x4 and 4 wheel drive. It has USB ports and an outlet to plug something in when switch is on.

The Toyota 4runner is an excellent vehicle. It is durable and wonderful at driving long distances. I drive mine across the United States all the time, and it is extremely reliable. I have always felt extremely safe in the car, and it drives extremely smoothly. I would recommend anyone this car, especially as a vehicle to protect from accidents.

An outdoorsman's ideal rig.
The 4runner is a rugged SUV that has met all my expectations. While it may not be a luxury vehicle, it rides exceptionally well and gas mileage is comparable to others in its class. I personally love the looks of the car. The interior is comfortable and rides quietly. The leather is soft and durable. The media system is easy to use and produces a great sound quality with a pleasant interface. The rear storage is perfect for road trips and can be easily used for camping outings. Because it is a Toyota, I am confident in the vehicle's reliability and look forward to driving it for years to come.

Best off-roading vehicle we have owned!
Love the interior detail of the 4runner trd-pro, black leather interior leather with red stitching. It rides very comfortably in both the front seat as a driver and passenger. Plenty of space for passengers and dogs in the rear hatch. One complaint would be the gas mileage, as it is not the best. We have never had one concern with performance or reliability.

4runners are safe and fun for the whole family, including the fur babies.
I live in Colorado and I cannot see myself driving another vehicle here. 4 wheel drive is amazing, super safe, handles amazingly, love how the seat in the back fold down. Dog's favorite part is the back window rolls down! I do not think there is another vehicle out there that does that.

Top performance not so great.
I tried to drive it on the highway at top speed and once it reached its max the engine cannot keep up with and start to make sounds, and lower the speed about 5 mph less. Interior is great on leather. The 3 row seat is very useful when you need to get in more passengers or when you need to make a bigger room for the trunk.

The Toyota 4runner is an amazing vehicle. It rides smooth and has plenty of room for my kids and everything we have to lug around with us. Gas mileage is not terrible at about 18 mpg. I also like how high up you sit when in the vehicle. I would recommend this vehicle to everyone!

The back up camera is helpful, and the 4wd performs very well.
The throttle response is a bit wacky, the vehicle has been extremely reliable. It has a third row of seats and is quite roomy and comfortable. I wish that Toyota would have put more effort into the features because for a $40,000 car the tech features do not seem quite up to par.

I recommend this car to anyone. Very reliable, very roomy, touchscreen radio, back seat air, heated leather seats, sun roof, back up camera, performance is good, big trunk space, lot of legroom, this is all around a very nice and luxury car and very safe and reliable all the way around.

4 runner for the win!! Would only trade if I was upgrading to a newer model.
I love this vehicle. It is very sporty and overall just looks great. It runs very good and to date has had no issues. There is not a lot of space on the inside, child car seats will fit but does not leave any room. Back seats do fold down and makes good room for hauling things as long as you only need the two front seats for passengers. You can however fold down only one seat if you are not hauling anything big or if you are hauling tons of groceries (or a sam’s order). If traveling on vacation where more room is needed, add a travel trailer, the 4 runner pulls great! Also we added a roof rack to ours which also helped!

Rugged build but top heavy feels.
I like the idea of my 4runner, meaning it is an SUV. I also like the look/style. However, the 4runner is rather top heavy and often feels unstable. My dog who is terrified of the car actually hates the 4runner because of the top heavy feeling. But other than the top heavy feeling, the car has been great.

My 4runner: why I love it.
My car is exactly what I wanted. When I bought it, the car was the trd pro edition. It came with off roading tires, which is perfect because we trail ride and hunt, and lots of options to assist with 4 wheel drive. The glove compartment locks with the key, I love that! When I went shopping for a new car, I specifically went looking for a Toyota. I owned several makes of cars before and Toyota was the brand that I never had an issue with. My 4runner is a reliable car, I have never had a major problem yet. It is a perfect size vehicle for someone who wants a lot of room but does not want to drive a huge car, and the ride is pretty smooth for an SUV.

It is a reliable car, as all Toyota's are. The car should last well over 100,000 miles since our old ones did.
Size is great for family of 5 and two dogs. 4WD works well as we have tested off-roaring and up steep hills. Would like more space in the third row seats. This SUV is not super eco-friendly as I generally only get 15 mpg on streets and 17 highway. Voice recognition works as well as a phone does. Needs A/C vents in rear seating.

My 2016 sr5 Toyota 4runner has a third row for extra seating.
Performance on the 4runner is amazing! I have pushed my 4runner through 3 feet of snow. I have driven through a winter storm & was the only vehicle on the road. It has a perfect weight distribution to where is doesn't slide. It is very comfortable & seats 7 people comfortable. The only problem I have with the 2016 sr5 4runner is the heating to the back seats is very poor. The buttons to adjust the passenger front seat doesn't give you the option to lower for a much taller/bigger person.

Perfect car for all family and outdoor activities.
I love my 4runner. It is dependable and I can drive it up any hill. I live in the mountains and I drive steep, rocky, snowy roads. I have never had any trouble with my car. Good gas mileage too and good ac/heat. It has a lot of space for groceries and luggage.

The best vehicle out there!
Zero issues. This is the second 4runner I have owned and I'll never have another type of vehicle! Very comfortable and great on gas. Handles all weather perfectly. The most reliable vehicle I have ever had. Bought brand new in 2016 and haven't had any issues with it since!

The 4Runner is fast and smooth on the road.
The Toyota 4Runner is spacious & efficient; however, the bluetooth is awful, and the there is no automatic button for the trunk.

Save some money on a 4runner and buy a low-mileage used one.
The 2016 Toyota 4runner trail premium is a great vehicle for those that want a reliable and comfortable SUV that is also fantastic off road. The trail premium has the nice softex heated and powered seats, a great moonroof, roomy back seats and good cargo space. The navigation system/phone interface is dated and does not have android auto or apple CarPlay, but that is a minor issue. The newer years haven't changed much, so save some money and look for a low-mileage older 4runner.

The 4runner is the best car on the market.
The most reliable car I have ever owned. Great on the highway as well as off road. No matter where I need to be the 4runner can get me there. Extremely comfortable ride, with a well put together interior. Would recommend 100/100 times to anyone who is interested in buying.

Toyota 4runners are the best SUV’s on the market!
My 4runner is a very smooth ride. You can hardly tell when you go over bumps. It is excellent in the snow and off-roading in the mountains. It has a lot of legroom and space in the back for dogs.

Great car for the tall people in your life!
I truly love driving my 4runner. I previously drove a Buick and the quality and style of drive do not compare. My family can ride comfortably in my SUV, and it is very spacious. My family is on the taller side (5'4, 5'7, 6'2, 6'4) and we all are able to travel far distances and be comfortable. I do not have any special upgrades in my SUV, but I do not see the necessity for them either.

Try the 4runner, and you will fall in love with it!
The only issues we have had with the performance, is that sometimes the back up camera does not work. It really is hit or miss if it will come on. Another thing that can be annoying is the height of the vehicle, but only because I am short. We really do love this car.

I absolutely love the heated seats!
I love my 4Runner! I had a 2005 4Runner before I bought this one and had it for over 10 years. The newer one drives almost identically to the older one which I really like. It was hardly any adjustment at all to get used to driving the new one. I love having a third row to be able to have my parents ride with us when we go on vacation together. It really helps when driving around in busy vacation spots.

Interior, comfort, and cargo. Thanks for asking.
The 2017 Toyota 4runner comes in making a splash in the industry, offering a combination of great features, powerful performance and incredible fuel economy. The ’17 4runner is offered in 1.5l and 1.8l engine displacements, delivering 110 horsepower and 136 horsepower, respectively. It can be driven in a FWD or full-time 4wd drivetrain. Interior features that make the 2017 Toyota 4runner so great may include privacy glass, and rear camera for safe driving in reverse. Other features may include power windows, locks and mirrors, as well as air conditioning and keyless entry.

Perfect vehicle for an active, outdoorsy family.
Great GPS navigation and screen features. Bluetooth and XM radio capabilities. I love that it has an ac adapter in the back when the 3rd row is down for blowing up air mattresses while camping. Seat heaters are perfect for cool mornings. The ac and heater both kick in quickly which is great for impatient kiddos. We've taken this hiking, camping, around town and on long trips. It is comfortable, reliable and the perfect family vehicle.

Very reliable and very comfortable.
Not enough room for more than 2 kids. It is very comfortable - love the heated and cooling seats. Came with the hitch - a bonus! Love that it is remote keyless entry. Very happy with car but do need a little bit more room.

Everything that is needed.
I think the thing I like the most is how simple the car is. It does not have too much features but just enough features that I can do all of the things that I like. I also like how high the car is off of the ground. The music control is very appealing to me because has the bass and quality that is there and needed for an person.

Third row seats are the best ever in my 2016 4runner!
Love my 2016 4Runner! Handles great and rides comfortably. The third row seat is easy to set up and convenient. When it folds down, there is a ton of cargo room. The built in navigation is phenomenal! Touch screen is easy to use. The rear sliding glass was not something I thought I would use, but I surprisingly use it more often than not. Seats are very comfortable.

The Toyota 4runner that we love.
It's great, we feel very safe in it. I have two small children and in Chicago winters we feel very safe especially when we use four wheel drive. The only thing is it is very loud, it sounds like a semi truck when you turn it on. Also it does not have a very fancy display. But we love it.

Good off road performance
Very good SUV for mix of on-road off-road activities, good towing capacity, not much new technologies installed. Outside of backup camera, it has pretty much nothing. No front or back sensors, no keyless start. Within this price range comparable SUVs are much more loaded
