2019 Toyota 4Runner Review: Ultra Reliable Midsize SUV With Affordable Running Costs

Alex Showalter
Feb 2, 2023

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner lasts over 350,000 miles with relatively minor peeling paint and shock noise issues reported. At $30,250 to $52,998, it’s more expensive than most midsize SUVs, although it’s worth it for the outstanding long-term reliability ratings.

likeFilled The Good
Off-road capabilities are better than other SUVs, ownership costs are lower than the competition and cargo space is also good.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The 4Runner doesn’t have the latest safety technology, the suspension is choppy and the engine is not very fuel efficient.

Is the 2019 Toyota 4Runner a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2019 is an excellent year for the Toyota 4Runner since it’s so reliable, even though it’s a bit outdated. Owner reviews praise the low ownership costs, performance in the snow, along with the leather seats.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are more utilitarian than luxurious, the seats are comfortable on long drives, cargo space is also decent for its size.
  • Reliability 10/10 – There are no mechanical problems on the 2019 Toyota 4Runner, it is among the most reliable SUVs on the road. Models from 20102022 are all excellent.
  • Performance 8/10 – Performance is okay from the V6 engine, although it’s not the quickest SUV on the market due to its weight.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2019 4Runner is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. It has a standard rearview camera while parking sensors are optional.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – Fuel economy is bad at up to 18 MPG, giving 414 miles of range from the 23 gallon tank. Gas costs are $26 higher than average at $232 per month.
  • Value 9/10 – The 2019 Toyota 4Runner is more expensive than other midsize SUVs, although slow depreciation makes it a great long-term value.

Amazing Toyota for a family vehicle.
I love my 2019 Toyota 4runner. I bought it new from the Toyota dealership. I have had no issues or concerns and love using it as my daily driver. This is my second Toyota and will always drive them. I cannot imagine having another vehicle!! It is so great!

Keyless feature is perfect!
This is the second 4runner that we have owned. Loved the first one and love the second one. The interior of the SUV is very comfortable and roomy enough for up to 5 people-four very comfortably. Love the keyless system for starting the vehicle and for locking the vehicle when you get out.

Gorgeous white SUV, seats 7 with sporty black wheels and leather interior.
My vehicle drives like a cloud. I have had it for over a year and it has been very reliable. I got in a wreck and barely felt the impact even though it damaged the front end pretty badly. Features I love include opening the garage door with my vehicle, wireless connection to my phone, sunroof, leather upholstery. For an SUV it actually gets pretty good gas mileage. I love it!

Toyota 4runner 2019 srt awesome vehicle ‘.
None there was one recall but they fixed it immediately and we were happy with the service that we get from Toyota. The only thing I would change is I would put leather seats instead of cloth just to get more use out of the seats. I love the sound system it is really got good bass.

4 runners: the best SUV produced!
I have never had any issues with a 4runner. I have owned five of them and still own two right now. They are very reliable and strong vehicles with plenty of space and gas mileage is not bad either. The seats are comfortable, whether it is cloth or leather. Perfect for off roading too! The price is great and plenty of colors to choose from! You will never be sorry for purchasing the best SUV out there! I will always own a 4runner!

The Toyota 4runner is and will always be a reliable vehicle.
I really enjoy the all the space, comfort, and the overall performance the 4runner has to offer. The interior design with all leather seats really give the inside a more luxurious look. Do not let that distract you from the fact that you can take this piece of machinery anywhere with its impressive off road capabilities.

Comfortable, classy, roomy, mom car!
The navigation center is outdated compared to its competitors. Other than that love the car. It is seats are very comfortable and rides smooth. The steering is much smoother than my last car (a VW). It looks classy and seats children well at the same time.

2019 4runner - my dream car.
I absolutely love my car. Its big and spacious without being overly big. I coach a softball team, so it's perfect for fitting all of the gear. All of the controls and systems are very user friendly. It's a great car if you have a family. Toyota's run forever and 4runners real hold their value which I love. This is my dream car.

Why I'm returning my 4Runner keys
Looks nice on the outside & rides well, especially off the road/pavement.. However the 2019 4Runner is way behind other vehicles with the simple technology. No auto-shutoff lights or indication lights are left on until your battery is dead.(Then you get a light indication with beep). 4R Lags Horsepower when accelerating to 45mph but drives better at 70 mph. Zero dimming mirrors anywhere. My 2003 Chevy Avy had dimmers & auto mirrors when in reverse. Why not put the same updated features or technology upgrade package in the (2019) 4Runner as the other lines have standard. (Rav, Highlander, Tundra, Tacoma).

Correcting the straight line steering
No, My local Dealership has failed in its attempt to fix the steering issue on a fully loaded 4 runner limited. They have persons on staff that experienced the problem. They failed to have the alignment technician ride with me and give him much needed information on what speed this starts. This is a safety issue on driver control of vehicle at 65 mph and above. If a Toyota engineer would contact me it would be a asset in determining the steering issue. I do not need customer service on this. They do not have the design knowledge needed to fix my problem. Drove 2 other cars 1 of them exactly like mine. They both drove great at 70mph. Please help. [email address removed for privacy]

Traction as daily driver is awful
No. I have the vudu blue trd pro and it loses traction in the most simple situations Really dont trust it. Had toyota sienna van awd that i traded for trd pro 4 runner and am very sorry. Sideways on a slick bridge, slid in a simple corner at normal or slow speed in the rain and slippage at other strange times. Honestly i no longer feel safe driving in rain or snow and am very very sorry i bought it

There is nothing special about my vehicle beside the rear view camera.
There is no problem. My vehicle performance is good. The features are moderate, it have rear view camera. However mileage is only 30 miles per hour which can be difficult if you travel for work. That is the only thing that I dislike about the car. There is nothing else.
accountCircle RS V
2019 Toyota 4runner fails.
Underpowered for the price it should include more options such as auto gate closure auto wipers auto headlights auto power mirror closure. The positives are that it has a great warranty plus Toyota is a well known reliable name. The auto running boards are awful.
accountCircle Sara T
Large, spacious. Car opens automatically as you get close.
Great handling, very easy to drive. Front seats are comfortable. Good rearview camera. Great trunk size with option to have more seats. Problems: back seats are very shallow/uncomfortable, no automatic tailgate, no warning for if you are out of liquid/water to clear the front screen.
accountCircle Hermione S
Great looking car but downfall is the manual cargo door.
I love my Toyota 4runner nightshade edition. We opted for the running boards that come out when you open the door. It's a very cool looking feature. The part that needs a major update on the truck when it gets updated is the cargo door. Almost all SUVs have push button open and close but the 4runner is still manual. It's a very heavy door.
accountCircle Rose S
Affordable truck with third row option however offers little trunk space.
There is not enough room in the vehicle, not enough up to date features. Does ride smoothly and is comfortable, gets decent gas mileage for a truck. It is a nice looking truck but no trunk space when using the third row. I think it is a bit overpriced but an affordable truck option for a truck with optional third row.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota 4Runner?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Toyota 4Runner offers generous ground clearance with very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 4Runner at 4.4/5, praising the outstanding off-road capabilities, but doesn’t like the inefficient V6 engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 4Runner a 4.6/5, enjoying the high towing capacity for an SUV, but owners don’t like the lack of safety features.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Toyota 4Runner Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Toyota 4Runner include peeling paint, excessive noise from the rear shocks, along with some damaged wiring. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to other midsize SUVs, leading to lower repair bills as the 4Runner ages.

Peeling paint is the most widespread complaint on the 2019 4Runner at around 20,000 miles. Paint which is improperly cared for and left out in direct sunlight will begin to degrade over time. The only way to fix peeling paint issues is by repainting the affected areas for roughly $1,000 per panel.

Excessive noise from the rear shocks has also been reported on the 2019 4Runner at around 45,000 miles. If you tow a lot or go on extreme off-roading trips, the rear shocks will wear out quicker than normal commuting. Replacing the shocks costs around $800, depending on local labor rates.

Damaged wiring is another issue mentioned by some 4Runner owners in the first 10,000 miles. Some of the wiring has a soy-based coating on it which attracts rodents. If you have to park outside where the engine is susceptible to rodents, we recommend installing a rat strobe light or ultrasonic noise generator to discourage rodents.

There are four recalls on the 2019 Toyota 4Runner, which is similar to many other midsize SUVs. The most serious recall is on the fuel pump, which may fail. Toyota will replace the fuel pump assembly in affected models for free. Other recalls cover labels around the SUV, which are not a mechanical concern.

How Long Will the 2019 Toyota 4Runner Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Toyota 4Runner can last around 350,000 miles, which is longer than nearly any other SUV on the market including the popular Subaru Outback. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other midsize SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $450 per year.

As a used 2019 Toyota 4Runner reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the voltage regulator for $450, evaporative canister costing $500, along with the A/C drier assembly which costs around $350.

accountCircle Vic S

To this point I have not had any issues. Car includes free oil changes so that is helping with preventive maintenance.

accountCircle Frederic T

I have had no issues with my 4runner. I have only had it for a short while. I just recently got my first 5k maintenance.

accountCircle Lynn C

It is reliable, the only “problem” our family has is that it doesn't tell you when a car is too close, our past cars have this beeping noise when it notices that a car is too close for when we want to change a land or turn

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2019 Toyota 4Runner with a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Available upgrades include a stronger JBL stereo system. Unfortunately, the 4Runner still doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for the 2019 model year.

Safety technology is worse than many other midsize SUVs with a standard rearview camera. Front and rear parking sensors are available as an optional upgrade, there are not a lot of driver assistance features.

Is the 2019 Toyota 4Runner a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Toyota 4Runner is a good value since it’s one of the most dependable midsize SUVs on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $30,250 to $52,998, making it more expensive than a Honda Pilot or Jeep Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $35,310 to $47,400. Depreciation is nearly non-existent in current market conditions, although in normal times expect it to lose about 4% of its current value per year.

It comes standard with a five-speed automatic transmission. Performance is decent, taking 7.6 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH. The towing capacity is also decent at up to 5,000 pounds. The combined gross vehicle weight rating is up to 6,300 pounds.

What Colors Does the Toyota 4Runner Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Toyota 4Runner?

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner is a comfortable midsize SUV. It comes with a roomy and well-appointed interior that provides plenty of space for passengers. The front seats are supportive and offer plenty of adjustments, and the rear seats provide ample legroom and headroom for adult passengers.

Overall, while the 4Runner is not a luxury SUV, it offers a comfortable and practical experience for daily driving and long-distance trips.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Toyota 4Runner first came out in the 2010 model year.

2015: New off-road focused TRD Pro model introduced.

2016: Cell phone navigation added to base model, increased towing capacity.

2017: Trail and Trail Premium models renamed to TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium respectively.

2018: No major changes.

2019: Nightshade edition with black trim offered, upgraded Fox Shocks on TRD Pro model.

2020: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto finally offered, standard Toyota Safety Sense P on all models.

2021: New wheels offered on TRD Pro model, standard LED headlights on all models.

How Does the Toyota 4Runner Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner is one of the best midsize SUVs on the market since it’s ultra-reliable, although you trade some of the latest technology for lower ownership costs as it ages.

The Toyota Highlander is another midsize SUV from Toyota, which is around $5,000 cheaper. Technology is much better in the Toyota Highlander, while the Toyota 4Runner is much stronger off-road. We recommend the Toyota Highlander for most buyers, but if you want the ultimate reliable old-school SUV, we recommend the 4Runner.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV available for about $4,500 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Toyota 4Runner is more reliable. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner since it will have fewer problems as it ages, although the Grand Cherokee does have more powerful engine choices available.

Best mom vehicle ever!! You will not be disappointed.
Drives great and very comfortable. Large enough for our family and big hatchback for our dog. Living in a state with lots of snow. The 4 runner drives and handles very well in all road types during winter. Back seats are roomy for the kids and has enough leg room for adults as well.

4runner- a good mix of utility and comfort.
Chassis squeaks when going over bumps or turning. Performance is great and it is always reliable. For off road 4wd vehicles it is extremely comfortable. Good mix of performance and comfort. All features of the car work great, only complaint is the headlights. There are not automatic lights. You have to manually turn them on all the time. The lights themselves are also pretty dim, we had to replace with new lights.

My Toyota 4runner is a great overall vehicle. It sits rather high so you have great vision without the downfalls of a big truck. It comes with it is a reverse camera so parking is easy. All windows are auto featured, and that even included my back window. I used to work for Toyota so I know that this vehicle is trustworthy and will give me good mileage in the years to come. 2019 4runner - sr5 premium.
Reliable, consistent. Brand reputation holds true: top notch. Simple features without too many impractical bells and whistles. Functional vehicle. Wish it had a power liftgate - hatch is a bit heavy. Navigation is not too great, prefer apps on iPhone vs. In dash. Could use an upgrade GPS wise in both functionality and appearance of the screen.

The power and reliability of the car are great. It the comfort is not all that good but since it is 4wd comfort is not what its built for. The mileage is low around 17 mpg which is good for a v6 engine. Without the third row seats there is a lot of space in the trunk.

Toyota 4runner is a must!
Highs highly capable off-road, roomy cargo hold, loads of standard driver assists. Lows poor fuel economy, sloppy on-road ride-and-handling, shabby interior materials. Verdict the 4runner is great for taking the path less traveled, but its on-road behavior and overall refinement are less impressive on the paths most often traveled.

I absolutely love my 4runner. I put a lot of thought into what my next vehicle would be and the 4runner won by a landslide. It has the sporty look I love without sacrificing comfort and style. A wonderful family-friendly car with all the features of a luxury vehicle.
When we began getting ready to start our family, we traded in my older BMW for a “baby-friendly” car. We decided on a new Toyota 4runner limited 4wd. I have always driven Audis and BMWs, but I have to say, the 4runner is my favorite car I have had! It is reliable, low maintenance, and affordable to fix the many dings and dents I accumulate in the city. The limited trim is loaded with all the features I enjoyed in my BMW 750li, and there’s plenty of space to comfortably fit both our dogs and our new baby.

Drives great, looks great, especially with lift, wheels and tires.
Super reliable and drives great! I have loved the look of the newest 4runner body styles. I do have a slight issue with a vibration noise. Had to replace the front wheel differential, which was supposed to fix the problem but it didn't. I also have a 'squeaking' noise somewhere on the dashboard on the driver side, which can make a person crazy without the radio playing. Other than that, no complaints!

I love the Toyota 4runner.
There are only two things that I do not like about the vehicle. 1) the window controls are a little high for me, 2) the entertainment head unit does not have apple carplay. The window controls is not that big of a deal-I've gotten used to it. But I have looked into different head units to get apple carplay and it is not too expensive to replace, about $500 or so.

My dream car drives like a dream.
This is my favorite vehicle I have ever owned. It was my dream car before I purchased it. Even though it is not the upgraded trim, it is still beautiful in the dark metal gray color. The 3rd row seating is great to have but better suited for smaller sized people. Gas mileage is as to be expected for an SUV. I have not yet driven it in the winter but I feel confident that it will do well, especially with the 4wd package.

Smooth ride to work or play, no matter the season or day.
I love my 4runner! She’s been perfect for the snow and ice conditions! She handles well in the mountains too! This car is super tough, and I have never lacked for space! I have hauled a lot of stuff and people in it in the past several months. I am super grateful!

I love the black details throughout the interior and exterior of the car.
My 4runner is great on gas mileage, comfortable to ride in, and has never given me any mechanical problems. The blackout features makes the SUV look very sleek! The SUV has never given me any mechanical problems. If I could go back to the day I purchased this vehicle, I would have added the third row option.

My new awesome 4 runner is great for off road.
Extremely comfortable seating and easy to drive. The only bad thing is that it is not very fuel efficient, I love that I can open the back window for my pets and the sunroof is very enjoyable, it is also very roomy inside. Air works perfectly. I really love the heated seats.

4runner opinions and feedback.
The old 4.0 liter engine would be best in the 4runner. 3.5 liter lacks some power also, some of the features of the 4runner feel outdated. The interface needs more modern hardware. With that being said the vehicle is great for light off-roading but can be upgraded for heavy off-roading.

I love how it drives, little big for me but getting used. To it.
I love my 4runner. I do not like taking it for long travels, it likes to eat a lot, but when I do it is very comfortable. I do not use it much for mountain driving, just local. It is very comfortable, it seats 5 peoples. I have not had any problems yet.

The 'Cool' version of a soccer mom car.
I just traded in my 2017 4Runner for a 2019 model. I love them that much. The 4 Runner is a fabulous option for those that what space, technology and safety, but in a sporty package. It handles well, with a quick response time and maneuverability. I love the cargo space and ability to turn down seats for even more room. The back up camera is so useful, and the safety features are awesome. Really can't say enough about this car.

Head turning outdoor truck. Built for comfort and looks.
Truck is fantastic. Great for off-roading, camping, or anything outdoors. Plenty of cargo space and comfy seating. Car is almost two years old and unfortunately the leather on the steering wheel is starting to peel off. Car audio sounds great and is decent on gas.

This is the first time with a back-up camera and it is awesome.
I have not had any problems with my vehicle. It has a lot of room for me, my dog and all my camping gear. Seats are easily cleaned and very durable. It is easy to drive feels more substantial than a small SUV but smaller than a truck. It's a nice middle ground.

The 2019 4runner is a very good vehicle.
The 2019 Toyota 4runner is all out a great car. The car gets absolutely great gas mileage and the car also has a 3rd row seat just in case you need the extra room for someone to sit. The car also has heated leather seats and weather guard floor mats that catch all the dirt and mud on your feet. It also has an amazing stock radio and speakers to provide you with very good sound quality. Throughout the 2019 4runner is a very good vehicle and it has the extra room if you need it.

It's the best vehicle I have ever owned.
I have wanted a runner for over 20 years and I finally got one. It is great for road trips. I moved myself in this vehicle. It gets great gas mileage. I absolutely love it. I have had mine for over a year and I've had no issues at all with. It's actually been the easiest vehicle I have ever owned.

Spacious vehicle with a nice luxurious and rugged look. Vehicle has minor cons.
Toyota 4runners are about to withstand rugged terrain while looking sleek. The only complaint is that due to it being a work vehicle, some features are gone; for example hands free trunk door open/close, the back row is 2 separate seats instead of a bench. Some safety features are also missing like the putter sensors that alert you of traffic around you.

Great vehicle for family travel and fun!
So far I have not had any issues with my Toyota 4runner. I love it and I would recommend it highly. My last vehicle was a 4runner also and it was a great car for my family! It is a very comfortable ride and you can fit a lot in the back also! I love the fact that it also has a third row seat if you need it.

2019 Toyota 4runner off road.
My 4runner is amazing. It is definitely more rugged and not for luxury. The only downside I have so far is the difficulty to put it in 4 wheel drive, you have to go completely off the road in order to do it. The anti skid does not work as well as some of the vehicles I have had in the past. Overall, I am very happy with all parts, except I wish there were more options for luxury on the vehicle.
