2008 Toyota Camry Review: A Midsize Car With Several Issues

Alex Showalter
Jan 25, 2022

The 2008 Toyota Camry is more expensive than other midsize sedans at $6,282 to $9,402, having some engine problems. With more complaints than other years, 2008 is one to avoid with a shorter 200,000 mile lifespan.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
More passenger room than other midsize sedans, a smooth and comfortable suspension, as well as affordable regular annual maintenance costs.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There are more complaints for excessive oil consumption than any other year, a boring driving experience compared to other midsize sedans, and low-quality interior materials for the price.

2008 Toyota Camry: Quick Overview

  • According to J.D. Power reliability ratings are great. We find more problems with oil consumption than other sedans, but there are some improvements from the 2007 model.
  • Two engine choices are available including a weaker 4-cylinder and a large V6 with excellent power for the class.
  • Fuel economy is good, tying for 3rd place out of 13 midsize cars from 2008 with a combined rating of up to 25 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are excellent, getting a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests.
  • The 2008 Toyota Camry ranks 4th out of 13 midsize cars based on owner reviews. Although the Camry ranks highly, we recommend buyers look at another year since 2008 has a lot of problems and is not a good year for the car.

Toyota Camry hybrid 10 years strong.
Very comfortable, fuel efficient, low maintenance vehicle. Has held up very well through the years. I feel that this is a safe vehicle as well. The body shows little to no signs of age. The paint color has not faded or rusted after 10 years. The interior leather has held up well and there are little signs of age.

It has great gas mileage and is very comfortable to drive
It is very dependable and great on gas. I have only had one major issue where my water pump went out. Toyota was great and now my car runs with no issues

Camry's are very reliable
I loved everything about it, sunroof, interior design, etc....but now it is getting old and though it has stood the test of time, I will probably get a new car soon

Camry- a great vehicle for both singles and family.
For the most part, this car is simple and straightforward. One issue that I hear about, that also occurred with my vehicle, is that the driver’s side sun blocker has fallen off. The gas mileage is great, as well as the easy to use radio, temperature control and plenty of spaces to store things.
accountCircle Mina L
Used car problems, still has performance though.
Interior slowly falls apart. I do like the performance. Its a used vehicle so the speakers do sound a little bad.
accountCircle Rebecca V
It has great gas mileage for highway driving.
There are no complaints. Great gas mileage for highway driving. It has a great sound and audio system. Automatic seats and windows are great.
accountCircle Jennifer S
My car is reliable, it is great in all weather conditions, very safe.
I love the lumbar in the driver & passenger seats. The gas mileage is wonderful. The ac & heat are pretty awesome as well.

My vehicle is old and not very reliable. It gets little breakdowns frequently. It is very popular so I can find parts to fix it easily, but its not fun to do all the time.

Anti lock brakes. They can startle you if you do not know about them.
I like that they last so long if they are maintained. I do not like my car because it is rusted and causing me a lot of problems.

Safety feature and it's very important.
I like it to save fuel, easy to maintain, very safe.

Problems with the engine of my car.
The back axle is a bit wonky. The car stays on even if the key is not in. The engine overheard every once in a while. There is leftover oil residue throughout the tank and it is spread to the engine. The car makes a rattling noise when driving. It can be annoying.

Reliability, Dependability, Affordability
The best feature is the amount it takes to fill up on gas. It's very good on gas. Close to 40 miles on the gallon. It is very reliable even when you aren't so reliable. I have only had to replace my radiator that was cracked last year and I'm only at 182,000 miles on it. Also the parts (radiator brake pads, etc.)are not expensive at all.
accountCircle Mike T
It's reliable and doesn't break down.
I like that it's compact. I like that it gets me from point A to point B with little hassle. I like the style.

What Problems Does the 2008 Toyota Camry Have?

The 2008 Toyota Camry has an average number of complaints from owners compared to other midsize cars on the market. Serious improvements show up for the 2010 model year, making the extra $2,000 worth the cost.

Excessive oil consumption is the most common complaint from owners. Toyota engines frequently use more oil than other brands, but the 2008 Camry consumes even more. Some owners replace the pistons and rings to solve the problem, costing over $2,000. In other cases, the best course of action is to regularly check the oil to make sure the engine is full.

Melting dashboards are another problem owners encounter. In high-heat environments the plastic and leather components wear down, causing the dash to melt. There are two solutions to the problem including replacing the dash for about $1,000, or installing a dash cover for under $100.

Transmission problems, including a harsh downshift, are another frequent issue. Toyota made improvements for the 2008 model year to reduce widespread transmission problems from the 2007 model, but some still have issues. Usually replacing the shift solenoid for about $250 fixes the problem if the shifting is severe.

There are 8 recalls, which is worse than some other vehicles from the same year. The recalls include floor mats, accelerator pedals, load carrying labels, power window master switches, and seat heater wiring. Most serious are accelerator pedal issues, which can cause unintended acceleration.

How Much is the 2008 Toyota Camry Worth?

The 2008 Toyota Camry is more expensive than a lot of other midsize sedans from the same year with a price range of $6,282 to $9,402, depending on the model and mileage. When new, the price range was $18,570 to $28,120. The 2008 Camry continues to depreciate at about 10% per year, which is average for the class.

What Are the Models & Specs?

  • Base is the entry-level model with 16-inch steel wheels, cloth seating, cruise control, power windows and mirrors, as well as a 6-speaker stereo system with AM/FM/CD playback and AUX connectivity.
  • LE falls next in the lineup and has minor improvements including keyless entry, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
  • SE focuses on performance with 17-inch alloy wheels, a sportier suspension, new front and rear bumpers, as well as a unique interior.
  • XLE is the flagship luxury version with 16-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, heated front seats, reclining rear seats, dual-zone climate control, sunroof, wood accents, and a JBL stereo system with Bluetooth connectivity.

How Long Will the 2008 Toyota Camry Last?

A properly cared for 2008 Camry will last about 200,000 miles, which is average for a midsize sedan, but short for a Toyota. Repair Pal estimates the standard annual maintenance costs to be affordable for a midsize sedan at about $357 per year.

As the Camry ages and passes 100,000 miles, some expensive repairs come up. These include $2,000 for cylinder head replacements, steering rack replacements costing $1,200, and oxygen sensors which are about $300.

accountCircle Olivia W

It is very reliable. It has minor wear and tear problems that were easily fixed. It did not cost a fortune to fix.

accountCircle Amanda B

It is reliable. It does not have any problems. Other than routine oil changes and tire rotations, I have not had to take my car to an auto shop.

accountCircle Michael H

Yes 2008 Toyota Camry has been very reliable. Only issue being the power steering line getting a rot hole but it was a return line so it was easy to fix.

accountCircle richard o

I have not problem right now so far is running very good I take care this vehicle good so recommend Toyota very good brand.

accountCircle John E

After about 12 years of ownership, I have finally encountered my first small issue (with the vsc system), but it seems like a quick and inexpensive fix. In other words, this is a wonderfully reliable vehicle. I love it!

accountCircle Samantha K

Toyota 2008 is very incredibly reliable. And no it does not have any problems at all. I can drive very smoothly to work and anywhere further than that it does not have any issues or problems at all. I love this car.

accountCircle Davina N

Ib rarely have to put any money into it and it drives smooth. The gas efficiency is excellent and always gets me where I need to go.

accountCircle Elaine T

Very. No problems other than normal wear and tear such as tires and brakes. Car performs very much like a new car.

What Technology & Safety Features Are Included?

Technology is good in the 2008 Toyota Camry compared to some other midsize sedans from the same year since the infotainment system was updated for the 2007 model year.

How Big is the Camry?

The 2008 Toyota Camry is a midsize sedan, similar in size to other vehicles in its class. Passenger room is excellent, with more legroom in the back seats than most other midsize sedans. Cargo space is good as well, easily fitting 4 suitcases in the 15 cubic feet of room in the trunk.

How Does the 2008 Toyota Camry Compare to Other SUVs?

Ranking 4th out of 13 midsize cars, based on owner reviews, the 2008 Toyota Camry is near the top of the class.

A close competitor in the same price range is the Honda Accord. The Accord offers a more engaging driving experience with a tighter steering feel, and more advanced technology. Where the Camry stands out is with slightly better reliability ratings, and a smoother suspension. 2008 was a bad year for both the Camry and Accord. Mechanical issues plagued both cars, making them a bad choice for buyers.

Another midsize rival is the Volkswagen Passat. Where the Passat wins out is with more cargo space in the hatchback model, and a higher quality interior. The Toyota, on the other hand, has lower ownership costs, and more optional technology. Overall, the Camry is a more affordable sedan to own, but both have some problems with reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Toyota Camry a Good SUV?

No, the 2008 Toyota Camry is not a good car based on information including 346 verified owner reviews, and 17 government and automotive websites. Positives include a good amount of power from the V6 engine, and a spacious cabin with more passenger room than many rivals. Where the 2008 model loses some points is with a dull driving experience, and more engine problems than other years. Overall, the 2008 model year is one to avoid, and upgrading to the 2010 model for $2,000 more gives you better reliability.

The cold weather and it is affect on my hybrid vsc system.
My vehicle has technical difficulties when it gets cold. During the colder times in Florida, the brake stays on and then while I am driving, the car says that I need to check the vsc system and I have to press on the brakes extremely hard in order to prevent myself from hitting someone. I have had this car for four years and this is the first year it has done this to me. Besides that, this car has been extremely reliable for everything.

There is a glare on the windshield from the front dash that is annoying. Visibility when changing lanes is not what I had hoped for. Performance is great. It takes off with speed from stops. Love my 08 Camry Hybrid, it's very comfortable, and drives very smoothly. Gas mileage is a little less than I would expect of a hybrid, but I also live in an area with lots of hills. I think it has been one of the best decisions of my life
Let me start the review by saying that I have owned numerous car makes and models over the years, most recently having owned a string of BMW's (both 3 and 5 series). My wife and I decided it was time for a change and purchased a certified used 2008 Camry XLE w/ the 6 cyl engine. When shopping, we looked seriously at and compared the car to the ES Lexus, Nissan Maxima, Infiniti G Series and Honda Accord. The car drives like a dream, has plenty of power and offers enough features to satisfy even a long time BMW owner. It certainly will not boast all of the high tech gadgets and toys you would find in high end luxury brands "loaded" models but the price more than makes up for any missed options. We traded in our 525i Sport Sedan and I will say that I absolutely love the Camry!!! There are differences in the way the two cars drive, a BMW has a "sportier feel", better top end performance and handles better whereas the Camry (especially the 6 cyl model) gets off the line faster and is a roomier ride (more of a "touring" feel), of which I notice the largest size difference in the width. We have 2 kids and the Camry, from a size standpoint, is MUCH more comfortable to drive for long periods of time than my 5 series ever was. I have not owned it long enough to comment on reliability or repair pricing but I can assure you it will be small potatoes compared to what I have been paying to keep my German cars on the road. Goodbye to $75 oil changes and $1000 bills for even minor repairs,
