2006 Toyota Corolla Review: An Excellent Long-Lasting Small Car

Feb 15, 2022

2006 is a good year for the Corolla, with a 300,000 mile lifespan and no serious problems. Prices are higher at $4,603 to $8,286, but well worth the cost.

Outstanding reliability scores, a high-quality interior for the cost, and a very smooth suspension.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The driving experience is bland, engines are weak, and safety features are missing on entry-level models.

2006 Toyota Corolla: Quick Overview

  • The 2006 Toyota Corolla reliability is remarkably good, but there are some computer issues. Although 2006 is good, there are fewer complaints on the 2007 and 2008 models.
  • Two 4-cylinder engine choices are available. The base engine is efficient, and the one found in the XRS model offers above-average power for the class.
  • Fuel economy is great at up to 31 MPG.
  • Safety ratings are okay for a compact car, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Consumer Reports finds the 2006 Corolla to have a comfortable ride, quiet cabin, and above average owner satisfaction ratings.
  • Earning our recommendation, the 2006 Toyota Corolla ranks 3rd out of 22 compact cars by owners. High reliability scores and a roomy cabin help it stand out compared to other compact cars.

Very spacious trunk for a sedan!
My Toyota Corolla 2006 has been a incredible car. Very dependable, low gas mileage, comfortable, drives well and very spacious. Never had any serious problems my car has 288. 000 miles and still going strong. The body of the car still in a great shape you can not tell it is a 2006 model.
accountCircle Hollie E
How reliable it is. I have only needed routine check ups.
I really enjoy how reliable my car has been over the past 11 years. It's still running great and I don't have plans to buy a new one. The only negative thing I can think of about this car is that the hubcaps fall off randomly, I'm down to one left.

Great reliable affordable car for the money.
Very reliable, easy to maintain. The car is easy to drive, able to park easily. Good gas mileage.

Small reliable comfort car
Small comfortable car with no problem. Drive smooth. Reliable and only need to do the regular maintenance.
accountCircle Susan P
That corollas do seem to require repair frequently, but the good thing is the repairs are minor, and often very inexpensive, even the engine repair.
I love that it is small enough to fit in just about any parking spot, but large enough for luggage or groceries. It's very sporty, which I like, but I do wish that it didn't seem to need such frequent engine checks.

Good on gas. Rarely any issues at all.
I love my car. I never have any problems with her. No complaints here. I hope she runs forever. Best car.
accountCircle Maria A
It is a lasting car but now it is old and need to get painted
I like its size. The consumption of gas is not too much It does not need too much maintenance
accountCircle Jessica B
The comfortable car with reliable basics.
I have had some issues with battery draw and wiring. There is a draw from my radio/dome light that causes my battery to die. Also, there has always been glitches with my dome light and dash lights. On the other hand, the car is extremely reliable, always on the go, and super comfortable. I have surpassed 235,000 miles and still going strong. When things need replaced, it is never too much of a hassle to find the parts and fix it at home. I secretly love the manual windows, especially when new people get in the car and cannot figure out how to get the windows down!

Do not buy one because it is not made well anymore.
My vehicle is cheaply made. There was rust coming through the paint the week that I bought it new. The mileage was very good early on. Now it is poor. The car makes a lot of noise when I sit at idle. I really do not like it.

Its clunky, but it gets the job done and gets you where you need to be
I mean the car drives well and reliably. Its sad that it's almost a decade old

It's a very old car. It usually has one problem per year.
The vehicle was once my mother's car, given to me as a graduation present. It's very old and has a few problems. I'm planning on getting a different car when I move.
accountCircle Paula R
Other than transmission and alignment issues, it is been pretty reliable.
Transmission has had problems from day one. Had to replace the tires several times due to alignment issues. Great gas mileage. Perfect for my son's first car, not too much power to get him in trouble. Has lots of miles, and still runs like the day we got it.

Too small for a family of 3 or more. Not good for road trips.
Car is too small. Just had a baby. Does not accelerate fast enough.
accountCircle Rose T
It's a red 4 door sedan. With automatic lights.
Mileage is too high. I had it for 5 years. It's very good on gas. But I have to keep up with it. So it does not give me any problem. And also it has a very bad paint job, they told me I will need 700 dollars to fix it. Something's wrong with the started and then filter.
accountCircle Smith L
Others should now that my car is safe and dependable.
What I dislike about my 2006 Toyota Corolla is the size of it. It is a bit small and not enough room to move around. What I do like about it, is that it is reliable, fuel efficient, fast and easy to fix.
accountCircle Jack N
As with most Corolla's it is a very reliable car.
It's an old car now and is very tired mechanically it is pretty sound but a replacement would be nice but then again I have no car payment.

What Problems Does the 2006 Toyota Corolla Have?

There are fewer problems on the Toyota Corolla than other compact cars from 2006, including the Honda Civic and VW Jetta. The 2007 model has fewer complaints, for only $250 more.

Engines surging while stopped are a common problem on cars with around 70,000 miles. Usually there is an ECU or fuel quality issue. Using high-quality gasoline keeps your engine running better, and Toyota can do computer updates for under $100.

Chipping paint is a common complaint on cars with over 120,000 miles. Paint chips easily when the curing process fails, or it’s not properly cared for. Repainting affected areas costs about $900 per panel.

Check engine lights are another issue, mentioned by owners around 45,000 miles. There are several sources, including computer problems, failing sensors, and gaskets. Repairing the issue can cost $100 to $500, depending on the source.

There are 11 recalls on the 2006 Corolla, significantly more than other compact cars from the same year. They include reflectors, lamps, labels, engine stalling, and several for air bags. Most serious is the one for the engine stalling, since it can lead to a loss of power while driving.

How Much is the 2006 Toyota Corolla Worth?

Blue book prices on the 2006 Toyota Corolla are $4,603 to $8,286, more expensive than rivals, including the Mazda3 and Sentra. When new, prices were $14,725 to $18,500. Depreciation is better, only losing about 8% of the current value per year, compared to 12% on other cars.

What Are the Models & Specs?

CE is the entry-level model with:

  • 15-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Manual Driver’s Seat
  • Air Conditioning

LE offers good upgrades including:

  • Power Windows
  • Keyless Entry
  • Wood Interior Trim

S is next in the lineup, adding:

  • Exterior Body Kit
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Fog Lights
  • Leather Steering Wheel

XRS is a performance-oriented model with:

  • More Powerful Engine
  • 16-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Sport Suspension
  • 4-Wheel Disc Brakes
  • Sport Seats

How Long Will the 2006 Toyota Corolla Last?

Regular maintenance helps the 2006 Toyota Corolla last over 300,000 miles, which is longer than the Elantra and Focus. Annual maintenance costs are about $50 lower than competitors, Repair Pal estimates them to be around $250 per year.

There are some parts owners should prepare to replace as the Corolla reaches over 125,000 miles. They include speed sensors for $300, fuel injectors costing $850, and ignition switches which are $275.

accountCircle York R

It is reliable. I have not had to be worried about my car starting and my previous car did so I am relieved to not have to worry about that.

accountCircle Grace R

Yes it is very reliable. There are very few issues with this vehicle. The radio is reliable and so are the safety features.

accountCircle A C

There have been issues with the air conditioning, but nothing that cannot be repaired,. I always use the dealer and they are fine.

accountCircle Zackery R

Not that I am aware of. I have owned the car for just over a year now and will continue to drive it as my everyday vehicle until such problem arise, which in turn I'll pay the cost or costs to keep it running.

accountCircle Melissa N

There were a couple recalls that Toyota made it easy and quick to resolve, other than that just normal wear and tear. Paint corrosion was an issue after 10 years but was easy to fix to look like new.

accountCircle Jayson C

No problems besides the fact that my back left tire went flat one time and I had to replace the brake rotors but that was expected with normal wear and tear of the car.

accountCircle H K

Yes I drive everyday but never have major problems. I have it more than 13 years so it is getting old though.

accountCircle Jan F

It is very reliable. I have consistently changed the oil and performed other required maintenance at the intervals given in the booklet.

What Technology & Safety Features Are Included?

Technology is very basic in the 2006 Toyota Corolla, and does not have any fancy features found in some rivals.

  • Base technology includes an AM/FM/CD stereo system with 4 speakers.
  • Optional upgrades include a 6-speaker premium stereo system.
  • Standard safety features include air bags. Antilock brakes and stability control are available on the XRS model.
VehicleHistory Image

What Engine Options are Available?

Performance is very weak in the Toyota Corolla compared to other small cars. Even the sport-focused XRS model takes nearly 8 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour.

  • The base engine is a relatively weak 1.8L 4-cylinder with 126 horsepower.
  • A more powerful 1.8L 4-cylinder is found in the XRS model and has 164 horsepower.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Corolla?

The 2006 Toyota Corolla is a compact sedan similar in size to the Civic and Cobalt. Passenger room is very good in the backseat, but taller adults may still be cramped. Cargo space is larger than rivals, fitting 3 to 4 suitcases in the 13.6 cubic foot trunk.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2006 Toyota Corolla Compare to Other Cars?

One of the closest competitors in the same price range is the Honda Civic. The Civic offers a sportier driving experience, but the Corolla is longer lasting. Overall, for the 2006 model year, the Corolla is a much better car with significantly fewer mechanical problems.

Another rival is the more affordable Nissan Sentra. Where the Sentra stands out is with a higher-quality interior, but safety and reliability are better in the Corolla. Spending the extra $1,000 is worth it for the Corolla, since they’re less expensive to own long term.

Why are 80% of cars in Afghanistan Corollas?
Google it- it isn't Land Rovers or even Toyota pickups, the #1 passenger vehicle in Afghanistan is the Toyota Corolla. By the standards of an automobile, they are about as close to indestructible as one will get. Our '06 has been faithful since we bought it new. Boring, basic, and figuratively-speaking, bulletproof.

Great Commuter Car For All Ages
I personally love my Corolla. However, I did not say love it on the rating system because it was not my first choice. I chose my Corolla for the gas mileage as well as the comfort. I typically drive an average of 100 miles a day and this car has amazing mileage for that. It is very comfortable for both the driver as well as the passengers. It is a very reliable car that will last for hundreds of thousands of miles. Toyota is known for lasting forever and having parts that are not outrageously priced, and I fully agree with both of those statements. I love this car and would recommend it to anyone!

Toyota reliability and efficiency.
Super reliable and good gas mileage. My car has lived up to 299,000 miles and still going strong with only minor repairs. I like the leather seats, the sun roof, and how roomy it is despite being a smaller car. I can fold the seats down and have used the car for multiple moves as well as hauling our dog.

Even though it is a small car, it has great storage space!
I like that it is so reliable and is small enough to fit into small parking spaces. I do not like that it does not have air conditioning in the back seat. I like the 6 CD thing that lets me put 6 CDs into the car to listen to. I do not like that it can only comfortably fit 3 4 people when 2 of those people have car seats.
accountCircle shawna a on March 31, 2021
That it is very fuel efficient and the maintenance keep up is not that bad.
I like that it is economically fuel efficient. I like that it rarely gives me any maintenance issues. I like that it runs like new even though it is over 10 years old.

The pros and cons of a 2006 Toyota corolla.
It is a small car. It also does not go very fast. The radio is old there is no aux cord attached to it. The headlights are dim. It beeps until you put your seatbelt on. The brakes on the car are not all that good must get new brakes often. The air conditioning gets very cold. When it's cold outside the heat in the car takes a long while to warm up and heat up the car.
accountCircle Riley P on March 25, 2021
It is getting old, therefore it might not run as well as newer vehicles.
I love the gas mileage, it gets me everywhere. I hate how small and lightweight it is, I feel vulnerable and unsafe.

The best starter car of all time
Started to have problem with car shaking after a while and I currently have to replace alternator. Despite all this, my car still rolls with the punches and wouldn't dream of another car yet. The car can be fast and the brakes work extremely well. I love a low maintenance car and this is definitely a low maintenance car. Just as long as you don't slack too much on upkeep.

Best vehicle of 2006 for sure.
I really enjoy the Toyota Corolla. It drives very smoothly, and the radio is amazing. The seat belts work great, and the airbags are very safe compared to other vehicles. There are many compartments to store car information, such as insurance, and enough room in the backseat for a baby seat!

A great dependable car with no major issues.
The only major problem that we have encountered with this car was that it was subjected to the airbag recall and our dealership fixed it. The car now has over 106000 miles and still only requires routine maintenance such as new tires batteries and the like.

Blue Toyota Corolla with great pick up
I do not like how light it is, and the fact it's a front wheel drive. Because of that, it's hard to start moving if there is any moisture or snow on the road. The tires just spin. It has a lot of power; which I like; but again, how light the vehicle is makes it difficult.

Excellent older, low-maintenance vehicle.
My Corolla is a decent sized, fuel efficient car. I enjoy that there is a sunroof, and that even though it is not a large car, there is still plenty of space inside. I also enjoy that my car has a manual transmission, as many newer vehicles no longer do. The stock stereo system is decent as well. The seats are comfortable, which is nice as I do tend to make longer trips. As will most Toyota vehicles, the Corolla is a well-made car and will last until it falls apart!

Great ride at a great price!
It is a great little car for the price. I didn't get any extras, no cruise. But it is a nice riding, gas-efficient (34 mpg) ride and I am happy to have owned it. The hubcaps are a little fragile, as now all of them are cracked or missing pieces. I was impressed that now at 12 years old it still runs great.

My 2006 Toyota Corolla is fantastic on gas. It takes us about half a tank for a round trip to the beach, which really beats a whole tank in the Tahoe. The interior is very easy to clean, steering/handling is well intact, and to be a four cylinder, it still has great pep for interstate travel.
