2017 Toyota Highlander Review: A Good Year For The Reliable SUV

Alex Showalter
Mar 1, 2022

2017 is a long-lasting year for the Highlander, reaching over 300,000 miles with only minor A/C and noise problems. At $28,835 – 37,398 it’s expensive, but worth it for the dependability.

The lane depart feature is my favorite. Really helps you be hyper aware!
This car makes it so much easier to drive all around. It has lane sensing features so if you're coming out of lane, it beeps and warns you, which is especially helpful on the highway where you can't afford to be out of lane. The heating and cooling systems are really nice as well, dear temperature is adjustable as well! The clear roof is also gorgeous, as an additional in flow of air or when my kids want to fool around and pretend to be celebrities. As a new driver, this car has made it easy to adjust into driving. Overall, no complaints!

It is a safe and reliable car. I have 2 small children and I always feel like our car is super safe and could handle an accident, god forbid!!
I love the way it drives - very smooth. I love the rear view camera. There's enough space and it's comfortable when we take road trips.

This is a very good vehicle. I would recommended this vehicle to my sister and she brought one. This is my best car/truck purchase.

Great driving and safe car!
I love my highlander. It has a lot of safety issues that help keep me safe. The service is great also. It handles very well around town, highway and in bad weather. It also handles well in snowy conditions. I have owned four Toyotas and love them. I will always have a Toyota.

2017 highlander, a comfortable ride
My highlander has many safety features and sensors to help during driving. The back up camera is awesome to have. The car rides smoothly and is comfortable with leather seats and 3rd row seating. The moonroof can open all the way or pop up like a sunroof. The back windows have sunscreens made into the door for convenience.

I love everything about my vehicle. It is a great quality vehicle. It is very eco friendly and the safety ratings are some of the highest. It also has a great resale value.

I like that it has a third row. I like how well it drives. I like the safety features. The only dislike is gas mileage.

Highlander the good and bad.
Perfect size great gas mileage, reliable, wish it was a little cheaper. I love that it is sporty. Has great takeoff performance wish it came with the extended moon roof. Only problem had been with tires don't last but 40k. Also had to replace battery at 3 years. Should last at least 5.

Horrible starter issues
My starter went out on my 2017 highlander. No part available anywhere. Toyota found one in Puerto Rico but can’t get it. Now they have to order from Japan with no ETA available. Toyota will not agree that it is their fault.

Third row downfall: reasons why the third row is not the best fit.
I love all of the safety features this car has. Some examples are the lane leaving signal and alerting you if you need to be breaking. One of the things I do not like about the car is that the third row is not very comfortable. Car seats do not fit back there unless you have a small backless booster. It is not comfortable at all for an adult. It is also hard to access.

Hands free has such a bad echo all the other person hears on a call is themselves talking. I had the front wheel drive limited platinum edition. If I was stopped at a light on a slight hill I would not have any traction to take off again. The car only had 11 k miles on it. Took it to dealer to fix problems. They said they updated the car and could not get the tires to slip. I drove off the lot called my daughter and still had same problems. On slight hill the tires slipt. Called dealership and asked if a better tire with more traction would help. They replied no. I drove directly to another dealership and traded it in.

BSM PROBLEM
BSM keeps going off and on. I think Toyota has put the sensors in places where they can go crazy and dealers make money. Shame because I like the vehicle otherwise.

2017 highlander smooth ride.
I like the comfort and smooth ride of my highlander. I do not like the gas saving feature that shuts the engine down at every stop sign. I have had issues that has not been resolved. I can park my car in the garage and go out the next day and hear a pump running. I believe it is the fuel pump. The dealership has not resolved this issue.
accountCircle Jonni D
Good ride belies lack of balance of power and visibility issues.
Highlander performs well overall as expected for a Toyota. However, blind spots to right and left make cornering not as ease free as the sienna or other minivans and SUVs. Steering feels less secure as the vehicle too light for the power of the engine. Interior capacity is among the best of similar sized vehicles. Comfort and ride are above average.
accountCircle Patricia F
Toyota highlanders are extremely reliable!
I paid extra for an anti scratch on the outside of the car and it seems to scratch easily, which I do not like. However, for the three years I have had it, I only needed to replace a part that was under warranty. The car is very reliable and it is what I expected for a highlander.

Top Critics Reviews

  • Consumer Reports finds the Highlander to be reliable with high resale value, but is missing exciting performance.
  • Edmunds 4/5, noting a quiet and comfortable ride, but has a cramped third row.
  • Kelley Blue Book gives the Highlander  a 4.5/5 finding great safety features, but missing off-road and towing capabilities.

What Problems Does the 2017 Toyota Highlander Have?

Problems include wind noise, smelly air conditioning and oil consumption issues. The issues  are relatively minor and similar on models from 2016 through 2020, making them all good choices.

Excessive wind noise is the most common complaint from owners at around 1,500 miles. Some owners have found damage to the gaskets on the doors which causes the noise. Replacing gaskets costs about $200.

Moldy smells from the air conditioning are rare, but happen around 30,000 miles in some vehicles. The most common source of the problem is a clogged A/C drain line, which allows mold to build up.

Excessive oil consumption is another rare issue, but mentioned on some Highlanders at around 40,000 miles. Toyota vehicles tend to use more oil than other engines to protect components. The best course of action is to check oil levels regularly, and top off as needed.

There are 4 recalls, similar to other midsize SUVs. Recalls include spare tire air pressure, roof rail fastener, windshield wire harness, and fuel pump. Most serious is the fuel pump since a failure can make the engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

How Long Will the 2017 Toyota Highlander Last?

Reaching over 300,000 miles the Highlander is one of the longest-lasting SUVs on the market. The Edge and Acadia have shorter lifespans by 100,000 miles. Repair Pal estimates the maintenance costs to be very affordable at $462 per year.

As a Highlander reaches 125,000 miles, owners should prepare to replace water pumps for $1,000, wheel bearings costing $350, and the brake light switch which costs $100.

Do not like the compass on the dash it is better in the 2012 sienna other than that it is a great car easy to drive very comfortable.

accountCircle Peggy A

accountCircle John L

Very reliable and has no mechanical problems, although there are some features that I wish I had on my vehicle.

How Much is the 2017 Toyota Highlander Worth?

Blue book prices range from $28,835 – 37,398, making the Highlander more expensive than an Outback or Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $30,630 to $46,260. Depreciation is better than average, losing only about 7% of the current value per year.

Technology is excellent in the 2017 Highlander, with all-new technology added this year in a mid-cycle refresh.

What Engine Options are Available?

Performance is average even with the upgraded V6. The larger engine takes the SUV from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds and tows up to 5,000 pounds.

  • The base engine is a weak 2.7L 4-cylinder with only 185 horsepower.
  • An available upgrade is the more powerful 3.5L V6 with 295 horsepower.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Highlander?

The Highlander is similar in size to rivals including the CX-9 and Pilot. Passenger room is great in the second row, but the third row is cramped and best suited to young children. The optional captain’s chairs in the second row are a luxurious upgrade.

Cargo space is good with 13.8 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 42.3 behind the second, and 83.7 when all seats are folded flat. There’s enough room for a family of 5 and their luggage.

How Does the 2017 Toyota Highlander Compare to Other SUVs?

The highest-rated midsize SUV of 2017 is the Toyota 4Runner. Where the 4Runner comes out ahead is with better off-road capabilities, but the Highlander has more technology. Overall, the Highlander is a better daily driver if you never plan on hitting trails.

Another rival is the more affordable Honda Pilot. The Pilot has a larger interior with more room and a standard V6 engine, but safety features are better in the Highlander. The competition is close, but we recommend the Highlander over the Pilot simply for the technology.

2017 Toyota highlander with reliable performance and comfortable interior.
The 2017 Toyota highlander is a reliable car, at least from what I have seen. I bought it from a used car place, it was actually shipped from another state. There were no obvious issues, but the car's parking brake would make really bad creaking sounds when I used it, I am guessing the previous owners didn't use it much. The interior was well kept, except for a lot of scratches and some stains on the seats. There was also a tear on the passenger door interior, but it was all fixed soon after. There is no GPS or trunk opener from the inside which I was hoping there would be. You can make calls and connect your phone to the system so that's nice for listening to your own music and making calls without holding on to your phone. The seats are comfortable and they are a nice color. The car itself runs very well, no problems with the engine or brakes.

Nice vehicle for family of six.
We like our Toyota highlander overall because it provides just enough room for our family of 6 and 2 grandparents. It has been reliable so far for long road trips. It has basic features but suits our 'needs.' However, we have already had trouble with the ac fan going out. I love my Toyota highlander. It is super reliable, needs very little maintenance, and runs super smooth. I have had the car for 3+ years now and have loved everything about it. The seats stain quite easily. And they are very hard to clean. The dashboard radio and console are very higher quality and are really easy to figure out and use. I also, really love the blue color paint and it is very good at not getting scratched or chipped at all.

Toyota are amazing and reliable automobiles.
Love the performance on my SUV, never had an issue. This car is super reliable. The third role seats are a little uncomfortable compared to the 2011 highlander. The backup camera works great. I feel like all Toyota models are great specially the corolla and Camry are great gas efficient cars.

Still comfortable after a 14 hour drive.
The navigation system is old. It does not have current addresses. It was this way when we first purchased the car. It also does not permit the passenger to use it when the vehicle is moving. There is a wind sound coming from the windows when the vehicle is moving at 50 mph or higher. Other than the above complaints, the vehicle appears to be safe and performs well.

Rides and looks great! Service!
I love the ride, the gas mileage, and the features of my highlander. Compared to other vehicle that I have had, the Toyota service far exceeds the jeep dealer that I had before. I like the spaciousness, and convenience of the features, especially the side mirror blind spot alert.

My Toyota is a really great car. It is black and pretty shiny.
I really like my car! It is a pretty new car if I do say so myself. It does sometimes need oil changes but it is overall good. Mine came with a TV inside so the kids were entertained. It also had gaming controllers which were very fun. The car is great and also recent. I recommend you to buy it.

Perfect size for a small family and great safety features.
Not to big or little. I wish the 3rd room had a bit more room. Love captains chairs.

10/10 would recommend the highlander.
I love my highlander. It is extremely reliable - I have driven across the country 3 times with it and one of those times with a uhaul, had no problems at all and it was overall an enjoyable experience. I have had no problems with it. The only complaint is the radio, I feel like for a 2017 model it could be a little more updated. I also love the cruise control.
