2010 Toyota Prius Review: An Unreliable Year To Avoid For The Popular Hybrid Car

Alex Showalter
Jun 22, 2022

The 2010 Prius only lasts around 150,000 miles with a lot of engine problems. At $7,494 – 12,430, it’s too much money when you may need to spend thousands to keep it running.

likeFilled The Good
Passenger room is better than other small cars, the cabin is quiet and there’s a lot of technology.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The interior materials are cheap, the gauge cluster is busy and the steering feel is disconnected.

Is the 2010 Toyota Prius a Good Used Car?

  • No, 2010 is a bad year for the Prius. Owner reviews complain about engine problems, high oil costs, and worn-out batteries.
  • Reliability ratings are bad. The 2010-2011 models have more engine problems than others with improvements for 2012.
  • Performance is boring from the hybrid powertrain which makes 134 horsepower.
  • The 2010 Prius is reasonably safe, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is outstanding, at up to 50 MPG combined.

Great Gas Mileage, Lots of Room for Small Car
It has the best gas mileage of any car I've owned. It's surprisingly roomy for a small car. The hatchback trunk has plenty of space, and the backseat has a lot of legroom.
accountCircle Sarah D
It's easy and fun to drive. The gas mileage is great. I don't drive as often as I used to, so it's had some battery difficulty from sitting.
The gas mileage is great and the service I've received at any Toyota dealer I've used has been very good.

Best car purchase ever, super satisfied.
Super reliable, runs well, comfortable, very happy, cheap, great mileage, low maintenance, good legroom and cabin space, low repair cost, easy to park, easy to clean, would buy again. Convert to Prius, will buy again in future. Convinced my parents to get one too.

Highly recommend a Prius!
I really love my Prius. I mostly use my car for a short daily commute to work but have also taken it on several road trips over the past several years. It is incredibly comfortable, quiet, gets great gas mileage, and has always been reliable. For being a relatively small car, it feels spacious and if you fold the back seats down, you can really pack quite a lot of cargo into the trunk which is always nice.

Long lasting reliability!
I have had this car since 2011 and couldn’t be happier. There have been a few minor mechanical fixes and the only major issue was a dead battery and fixing the alternator. Other than that it has run great and has fantastic gas mileage. If I had to get another car I would get a Prius again.

Gas mileage and fun to drive
Love the GAS mileage and no complaints about the she drives

I love the energy efficiency and gas mileage, over 50 miles to a gallon. Love the solar sunroof that powers the fans to keep the car cool in hot weather, this feature is no longer an option.
Love the car but apparently the 2010-2014 year models have a tendency to use a lot of oil. My understanding is that Toyota is aware of the problem but will not recall the vehicles. I had to have the engine rebuilt at 86,000 miles and thank goodness my extended warranty covered it, about a 5K repair.

It's reliable and gets great mileage.
I love that it is reliable, gets great gas mileage and is comfortable. The things I don't like don't have anything to do with the car, but with with the add ons I didn't get with it.

I never see a Prius burn this much engine oil and car never abused

It is a hybrid vehicle and averages 45 MPG, but has gotten as much as 61 MPG.
I like that the engine doesn't run all the time, thereby saving gasoline. It didn't come equipped with a backup camera, which I wanted. It has enough leg room for me in the front seat. It's back seats are a little cramped. I like that it is a hatchback, so I can haul some loads, which I do occasionally.

It is extremely expensive. What you save in gas, you spend on maintenance
It's so expensive to keep. The small battery was $250 alone. I have to take it to a Toyota dealer to get the oil changed correctly so I'm not having to spend more money on a messed up engine

Burns Engine Oil like crazy out the tail pipe and plugs up cat coverter
It burns 1 quart of oil every 300 miles -yes thats only two zeros behind the 3 it also passed so much oil out the engine it pluged up my exaust system causing the prius to loose major engine power and it burnt up the cv boot becausing exuat gas made area close by cv boot extra hot ,a cat converter on a 2010 toyota prius will cost me 1800 for part only

Not the best car, but drivable.
The visibility is very poor through both the front and back windshields. Acceleration time is very long; in my opinion it takes too long to get up to a speed that is comfortable to merge, etc. The headlights are very dim despite my having taken it to the mechanic to have it looked at. Also, the aux port for the radio is unreliable. I have tried several methods of using them but the connection is always poor.
accountCircle Ray I
But am I really saving money?
I really wanted a car that was good for the environment, but this car is giving me more trouble than it is worth. I do appreciate saving money on gas, but overall, the “specialness” of a Prius is not worth it. And neither are the high car payments, which I wish I would have known years ago.

Nice Prius... Said nobody. Fuel efficiency > comfort
I like that it's great on gas mileage. As for comfort I like that it's a smaller car. I don't like that there is no pick up to it and people on the road do not respect you and you're constantly being cut off. I don't like how noisy it is. You have to turn the radio way up to overpower the noise of the tires. I do like that historically it is a very safe car.

What Do Critics Say About the Prius?

  • Consumer Reports says the Prius meets basic transportation needs, and has above-average owner-satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Prius a 4.6/5 liking the fuel economy, but disliking the driving position.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Prius 4.7/5 and like the technology, but dislike the higher purchase prices.

What Common Problems Does the 2010 Toyota Prius Have?

Common problems found on the 2010 Prius are more serious than other years and include engine problems, headlight failures, and peeling paint.

Engine problems, leading to excessive oil consumption, are the most common issues on the Prius, showing up at around 110,000 miles. The problem is caused by internal issues with the engine, and costs about $2,300 to rebuild.

Headlight failures show up often at roughly 30,000 miles. Replacing the bulbs costs about $100, and a new ballast is around $450 if that has failed.

Peeling paint is another very common issue on Prius models with over 80,000 miles. The clear cot starts to fail and peel off, and the only solution is to repaint the affected areas at a cost of about $1,000 per panel.

There are 10 recalls, with the most serious being for the hybrid inverter system which can shut down and cause the car to stall.

How Long Will the 2010 Toyota Prius Last?

A properly maintained 2010 Toyota Prius will likely only last 150,000 miles before mechanical issues get too expensive, which is much shorter than a Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are affordable according to Repair Pal, at $392 per year.

Most used Prius models will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace items including the cylinder head for $1,500, fuel injectors costing $300, and the engine oil level sensor, which costs $275.

The Toyota Prius performance is consistent and reliable. It has standard problems that comes with cars after so much use over time. I wouldn't consider it to be problematic.

accountCircle Jeffrey T

Yes. Apart from oil changes, and tire replacement, I have had no issues. The 12 volt battery was just replaced after nine years.

accountCircle Judy D

Extremely reliable. It has I have fb 150000 miles on it and has never had a problem and has never had to go back to the shop except for oil changes, tire rotation, etc.

accountCircle Jenny O

It is reliable, I have had no major problems. Could have more cup holder space and better ac vent locations.

accountCircle Laura K

The battery can easily be run down. Headlights are not automatic. . Paint job is thin and cheap. Way overpriced but I have never had engine problems.

accountCircle Luis I

My car has well over 250,000 miles; when a car has that many miles you're going to have issues. My hybrid battery has all but failed and I've replaced the axles a few times. I was a ridesharing driver so breakdowns like this are to be expected.

accountCircle Joe A

The Prius is a reliable car. I was able to move across country driving this car with great gas mileage. I only wish the Prius had more power (especially when going over the mountains).

accountCircle Sandra S

The Toyota Prius is reliable in every way. I think that the interior is not as nice as I would like it to be and the fabric is alright but other than the this car is great for travel.

How Much Is the 2010 Toyota Prius Worth?

Blue book values range from $7,494 – 12,430, making the 2010 Prius about $2,000 more than a Honda Civic Hybrid or a Mazda3. When new, the price range was $22,800 to $28,070. Depreciation is better than average, losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Prius?

There are four models of the Prius available. The Prius was just updated for the 2010 model year with a complete redesign.

Prius II is the entry-level model with:

  • 15-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Keyless Ignition & Entry
  • Cruise Control
  • 6-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX Jack

Prius III is a step up, adding:

  • Improved Instrument Cluster
  • Upgraded 8-Speaker Stereo With Bluetooth & 6-CD Changer

Prius IV includes additional features such as:

  • Leather Seating
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Auto Dimming Mirrors

Prius V is the flagship model and has:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • LED Headlamps
  • Navigation Package

What Engines Come In the Prius?

The only engine is a weak 1.8L 4-cylinder paired with an electric motor which generates 134 horsepower while getting up to 50 MPG combined. Performance is slow, taking 9.8 seconds to go 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Prius Come In?

How Big Is the Prius?

The 2010 Toyota Prius is similar in size to other compact cars including the Nissan Sentra and Ford Focus. Passenger room is good throughout the cabin, but some taller passengers may find the sloping roofline a bit cramped in the backseats.

Cargo space is nearly twice the size of other compact cars, offering 21.6 cubic feet of room behind the seats, and up to 39.6 cubic feet when folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Prius Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Corolla is another competitor from Toyota costing about $1,000 less. Reliability ratings are better in the Corolla, but the Prius has more up-to-date technology. We recommend the Corolla for the 2010 model year since it will last significantly longer.

The Honda Civic Hybrid is another hybrid which costs $2,000 less. The styling and reliability are both better in the Civic, but the Prius is more powerful. We recommend the Civic, but in other years the Prius easily wins, there just are too many issues with the 2010 model.

Not as reliable as hoped
I bought my 2010 Prius in 2014, and it is about to hit 300k kilometers. Unlike my dirt bike . . . It did not have deflectors in front of the radiator and inverter cooler (just gaping openings). By 2020, enough small rocks and road debris (i.e. Salt) had hit them that both needed to be replaced. Goodbye $2,000 (CAD). The A/C has smelled like an animal died in there since I got it. This is evidently a common problem due to poor A/C condensor design. It would seem like an easy fix for Toyota as well, just run the fan for a few minutes after the car is shut off for instance (to get rid of moisture in the system when folks like me forget to do it). Speaking of the A/C, the compressor is super expensive to replace, and with my A/C just having failed, was looking at a $4,000 bill to have it replaced (just the compressor), as the part alone was over 3k. I found one off of Ebay, but it will still be close to a 2k repair. While a much nicer car than the 1991 Dodge Shadow I drove until 2014, it has had more major (and expensive) issues after reaching 10 years old.

The best car for gas mileage.
I have not had any performance issues with this vehicle. It only costs me around $19 for a full tank of gas from almost empty. I have not had this car break down on me in the 6 years of owning it. This car does not have a touchscreen panel in the center.

My vehicle is slick and grey. With plenty of backseat and trunk space.
The cars performance is amazing! You can use econ mode when driving in the city or country roads to maximize fuel efficiency. The only problem with the car is the type of oil, you use synthetic so oil changes are a bit pricey but you do not have to do it that often. Your average gas mileage is between 30 and 50 mpg which you do not have to fill up that often!

Excellent car, excellent value.
I purchased this car used, and have had no problems apart from routine maintenance. It is a comfortable, quiet ride. Gas mileage is phenomenal. I do miss automatic lights, as mine are manual. I also upgraded the sound system. The factory radio on this model is very basic. When I eventually need to replace this car, I will replace it with another Prius.

The car makes rumbling noise when driving in city roads. Also the electric part sometimes fail. From the positive side: the car remain good smell, like it does not absorb bad smell brought inside (from the food take outs etc). I like the looks. Even though it is 2010 it is still looks presentable.

Bad wiring harness but overall a great car.
The only downside is the wiring harness for the lights got recalled before I bought the car. The previous owner didn't get it replaced. I kept having headlights go out, so I took it to a Toyota repair shop. They told me about the recall and explained that the time to get it replaced for free expired last year. Now I can either pay $400 to have it replaced or keep paying to have headlights replaced.

The pitfalls of owning a Prius.
Bottom front fenders both sides where they connect to the bumpers rattle. Difficult to get plastic panel open to change oil. You usually will break one or more ? Of in the process. It was been very reliable and has great gas mileage. The only problem is it is very low to the ground and I had some rust issues. It is a fun car to drive since you spend time watching how well it does on gas. I rarely have to go to the gas station. Also has a very smooth ride.

It is very comfortable. It feels like it has more room on the inside than it looks like it does on the outside. Runs great for a city commuter. There are a few weird technical things that are glitching but the car is ten years old. There is also a leak at the back of the hatch but again, not bad for a ten year old car. I will say, the car is incredibly light and a good gust of wind on a high bridge will be felt, and can be a bit scary.

I have had very limited problems with my vehicle. With regular maintenance this car is one with significant longevity. In rain, snow, and ice it is as expected for being front wheel drive. My fuel efficient, economical, smart and environmentally friendly Toyota Prius.
I love my Toyota Prius, I am environmentally conscious and I have loved owning my hybrid car for the past decade. It is compact, reliable and extremely economical. I have mainly used it for city driving with about 75% of highway and 25% inner city driving in the past decade. I am a petite driver and I love the feel of the Prius. There have been minimal maintenance issues with my vehicle and nothing out of the ordinary. It is roomy for my family of four and has served greatly as I ferried my children during their grade school years. It looks compact but has a reasonable amount of space in the trunk for regular grocery runs and the back seat has a 40-60 split that has been convenient for many an odd sized furniture or gardening purchase. Overall, with an average mileage of 48 miles/gal in the first 7 years, now down to 42 miles/gal, I can truly say that I could not have asked for a better car during one of the most active decades of my life where I was a working mother to two children and three dogs. I would recommend the Prius to anyone who is looking to invest in the environment and do their part in saving this planet.

It now burns oil at high speeds after I hit 100,000 miles, but I just have to stay on top of adding/changing it. I absolutely love how it is no more expensive to maintain but half the price for gas as any other comparably sized car. Surprising get-up-and-go, and I really like the eco mode to save even more gas. Why I bought a Toyota Prius.
I have a 2010 Toyota Prius. I really became interested in a Prius while on a vacation and had to rent a car. We got a Prius for that weekend and it opened my eyes. It is easy to drive, comfortable, has plenty of legroom in the back seat(a nice positive with children with long legs) and, did I mention that it is a hybrid that gets around 50 miles per gallon so it is easy on the pocketbook too. Toyota is a solid make and as long as you get it regularly maintained, the car you get will last you a long time. I bought my Prius as a used car and it is 10 years old with 126,000 miles with 200,000 miles the goal. I expect to surpass 200,000 miles with ease.

The Prius: a great small family car.
So far the car has been very reliable. We love that it is a hybrid car and does not guzzle gas as much as our other cars. The car is overall very comfortable and we love taking it on road trips and other long distance drives. One problem we have had is the catalytic converter underneath our car has gotten stolen 2 times. We solved this problem by getting a box type thing that we got installed around it making it impossible for it to get removed. Overall love this car!

We have owned this car for four years now and it has been utterly reliable. With just general maintenance and upkeep, it has not failed us once. The Prius is great in snow as it is a front wheel drive vehicle.
I love my Prius. It is fun to drive. I can pass trucks in the mountains so has plenty of get up and go. It gets 42 miles to the gallon. The only things I have had to replace in 160,000 miles are tires, one battery and windshield wiper blades. Checked my brake pads the last oil change and they are still like new as the way a Prius is designed is to use the system as brakes. It charges the big battery when I brake somehow also. It is not real comfortable on long trips but the mileage makes up for the less comfortable seats. I do need to get the headlights buffed as they are scratched looking and the dealership said they could do that for $100 I think to make them look new again. I have been told the big Prius battery should last 400,000 miles or more and I will keep this Prius for as long as it runs and then buy another one. You only change oil every 10,000 miles and rotate tire. I was told that it is the least expensive vehicle on the road today. Costs $.07 a mile to drive it. I love it when I fill it up. Has a 11 gallon tank and goes 400 miles without a fill up. I love the money I save with my Toyota Prius.

Consistently great gas mileage with a comfortable ride for your commute.
I have driven this car for 250,000 miles and had few to zero major problems. The gas mileage has stayed great. The electronics have been top notch with the factory upgrades that come with the iv trim. The one minor design issue I have had is that it is a tight fit for a rear facing car seat in the back. If you had two children under a certain age they'd be impossible to fit and not have your chest firmly in the steering wheel. But having used this car as a commuter for work and as a car for long trips across the country, I give it great marks.

Blind spot, comfortable for small family.
I love my Prius I have not had any major issues with it at all. For a small family it is very comfortable if I had a large family thought it would be too small. I wish the trunk area was bigger and the front window has a bar coming down on the side that makes visibility difficult at times because it creates a very big blind spot.

Low cost hybrid that never will let you down. Dependable and cost effective!
Has been the best car I have ever owned. Dependable and low maintenance costs. Owned for about ten years and have never been let down. Plan on driving until the vehicle will not go anymore. If you are looking for great gas mileage and low repair bills, the Prius is one of the best cars on the market.

Expensive but efficient for commuters.
I love this car. Helpful data on my long commutes let me know how fuel efficiently I am driving so I can adjust. Handles well, breaks good. My only critique is the bumper of my and many others look a bit beat up from minor dings that are hidden on other cars.

It's a full hybrid electric car. It has a simple and stylish look.
I like the design and style of the car. Also that it's full hybrid electric.

Hybrids are the way to go.
I love how this car drives. It is truly an amazing computer of a car. The only thing is road noise is really loud, and visibility is limited due to the siding. I love having a hybrid because I save so much money on gas. I wish I had an all electric car, that will be my next car. But the Prius is very reliable and I appreciate this car very much.

1 tank of gas can get me 430 miles on average. I use the electric mode often and if you need to get up to speed quickly there is power mode.
Love the gas mileage. Love the back seat folds down for more cargo room. Love how easy it is to install and remove the car seat. Wish there was more headroom in the backseat.

Reliable Prius checks all the boxes.
My Prius is very reliable and gets great gas mileage. It has had no problems beyond standard upkeep, and I would certainly purchase another one when it comes time to change vehicles. Even in the Minnesota winters, the Prius has no problems with steering or handling, and for a 10-year old vehicle, it continues to perform very well.

Cannot beat the value. You get comfort, style, modern tech and a fun ride.
There are so many positives about owning a Toyota Prius. The first and most obvious is the fuel savings. I just love driving all week and then filling up an almost empty tank for only 20 bucks. The radio is great with the jbl speakers it kicks. And even in 2010 they had hands free Bluetooth connectivity for cell phones. Sight lines are great and it has pretty fast pickup when you want it.

My Toyota Prius has saved me thousands in gas money over the years!
I really like the gas mileage I get from my Prius. I think the interior being leather is really nice. I think something that could be improved is the radio being a newer style. I also think that some of the plastic on the underside of the car could be better made and/or installed.

Great mileage and a comfortable, reliable ride in town or across the country
I love the gas mileage, easy to drive, and comfortable ride. I love that it is so reliable. I dislike that it's so close to the ground, although that's a tradeoff for its reliability.

Great for long trips-saves you a lot of money.
The gas mileage that I get on the Prius is great and helpful for road trips. It is very quiet and I do not feel as though it is 'aggressive' sounding. The downside is that it is not the most comfortable drive when riding for long periods of time. It also has a very annoying beeping when in reverse that is unable to be disabled.

Gas mileage and dependable.
No problems with the vehicle. It rides smoothly and gets amazing gas mileage. It has hands free phone and a lay down back seat for more hauling capability. It has the same get up and go as a non-hybrid car and is just the right size. Great leg room. Love it.

I can get my Prius to go over 100 M P H on a highway when needed.
I love this car. I only wish it was a bigger fuel tank, right now it's only 8 gallons. But she is comfortable, reliable, can really go fast when needed!

Prius is the car of the future. Has lots of get up and go for a 4 cylinder.
The Prius is exceptionally good on gas since also being electric. There is more leg room in the front seat area than what I expected. There is lots of room to carry things in the back truck area once the back seats are down. It runs excellent on regular gas so no need to buy premium fuel. The Prius paint jobs seem to be exceptional. The sound system and air conditioning are of great quality.

It gets good gas mileage in the summer months but declines in the winter months. So don't expect 48-50 mpg then. You might get as high as 40 or less during the winter season.
I like my Prius for the gas mileage, safety bags, and all around comfort. The only complaint I have is the car is pretty low to the ground so It's easy to break something. I still have the original car battery in it which is 8 years old now.
