2014 Toyota Prius Review: Dependable & Comfortable Long-Lasting Hybrid

Alex Showalter
Oct 5, 2022

The 2014 Toyota Prius lasts over 250,000 miles with only minor brake and air conditioning system issues. At $16,375 to $17,250, it’s expensive, but worth the money for the outstanding reliability paired with low ownership costs.

Passenger room is fantastic throughout the cabin, suspension is comfortable and the entertainment technology is great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Replacement battery costs are high if they fail, offers no electric-only range and it’s slower than other small cars.

Prius' are gas saver;s and very spacious. You can fit into small parking spaces
My prius is called pearl because she is a pearl white color with some sparkles. She drives very well and has gray interior leather heated seats.

It can go fast too, you just lose out on gas mileage when you floor it
Love the gas mileage. The rise is smooth and there is enough storage.

Smooth ride and nice basic features.
No major problems. Smooth ride. Speakers work well, no problems with Bluetooth. The hatch is surprisingly roomy and the space for storage underneath is nice. The back seat has decent leg room. There is some road noise and the gas mileage estimator is not very accurate.

Great gas mileage without sacrificing comfort
It's a good size for us, is comfortable and gets great gas mileage

The room it has and its AWD.
I love the fuel efficiency and carbon footprint. I love the hybrid nature of the vehicle. I dislike that if the key fob dies it makes starting the car more difficult.

Best affordable road trip car.
Great mileage. Quiet and comfortable. Fits a small family and gear very well! It is our go to road trip car as you do not have to worry about spending too much money on gas. If anything if you need to nap it is fairly comfortable because you can keep the air going!

The biggest thing that drew me to this car was the amazing gas mileage.
I have owned the car the three years now and I haven't had any issues with it. I love how high the gas mileage is and there is great trunk space. There is also adequate space in the backseat, nothing feels cramped or closed in. This has been an extremely reliable car, I never worry if it is going to start in the morning or give me problems throughout the day. I absolutely love my car and would consider buying a Prius again in the future.

All around it is a great car.
It gets great gas mileage. I fill up about once a month. It drives easy and very comfortable riding I love it because it is a hybrid that does not have to be plugged in to charge. It has plenty of room for passenger and plenty of room to carry my walker.

It gets good gas mileage. Other than that, that's the only thing I like about the car
The drive is very uncomfortable. The seat is uncomfortable and trying to see out the back window is odd and difficult. Only good thing is gas mileage
accountCircle Leeza K
Great for savings, poor for comfort.
If you are looking for excellent gas mileage, this is the vehicle for you. If you're looking for something that provides a nice, smooth, comfortable ride, keep looking. It does not hold up well and it is horribly uncomfortable to drive for any distance or time.

Pros and cons of a Prius c.
It gets wonderful gas mileage and is spacious I including decent trunk space but the small size can make it uncomfortable to drive during extreme weather and on interstates. The car is easy to handle and to drive, and would be a good starting car or good for more suburban areas.
accountCircle Patricia K
Disappointing gas mileage
I am really disappointed in the gas mileage. Advertised at 50 miles per gallon I'm lucky to get 30 miles per gallon. Also maintenance is more expensive than what they lead me to believe it when I bought the car. However, the car has a Lotta room and runs for nearly 10,000 miles before oil change.

An Economically Friendly Vehicle
My 2014 Toyota Prius is an intermediate car for someone who is need of buying a car, however, does not have a lot spending budget. The Toyota Prius drives very well on the road as well as off the road. The gas for the car is the ideal element for someone who travels a lot and does not want to pay too much to the gas stations for the expensive gas prices. The car does not drive the fastest, even with my foot on the gas pedal the car is hardly pushing through. If this problem occurs I usually use the econ mode on the car which helps give the car a little boost so it can perform faster on the freeway. The car is quite comfortable itself, however, I have added leather seats to the once softer cotton material the seats came in when I first bought the car.

Wonderful Gas Mileage, Big Trunk
I love the gas mileage, however there are many trade offs for it. I find the vehicle seats to be uncomfortable, the cabin to be excessively noisy and the air conditioning is not very cold. The trunk is very spacious. And I do like the radio/CD player. I wish they offered a hybrid with as much gas mileage that would seat 7-8 people.

2014 red Toyota Prius the good & not so good.
I enjoy my 4 door red Toyota Prius. It is a 2014 model, very standard in size and features. I enjoy the great gas mileage- I hardly ever have to fill it up. But even when I do, the bill is like $20 which I appreciate. The only problem is that I do not trust it in the winter driving through snow and ice- it really does not get the best traction in that weather. There’s also a few weird blind spots on the sides, but it is something I have easily adjusted to. Overall, I think it is a great economy car.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Prius?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2014 Prius is the most efficient hybrid car you can buy with very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Prius a 4.4/5 praising the spacious cabin, but doesn’t like the slow acceleration.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Prius 4.7/5 enjoying the high resale value, but owners don’t like the outdated styling for a hybrid.

What Common Problems Does the 2014 Toyota Prius Have?

Common problems on the 2014 Toyota Prius include brakes wearing out quickly, a moldy smell from the air conditioning, and the engine not starting. Overall, these problems are minor compared to other compact cars from 2014, and the repair costs are affordable as well.

Brakes wearing out quickly are a common complaint from owners at around 50,000 miles. The pads and rotors tend to wear down faster than on some other cars due to the weight of the Prius. Replacing the brake pads costs around $200, while rotors are roughly $500.

A moldy smell coming from the air conditioning is another issue mentioned by owners in the first 10,000 miles. The problem is common across all Toyota cars and is a sign of a clogged A/C drain line. Clearing out the line is an easy project which many shops can handle for under $50.

The engine failing to start has also been brought up by some owners at around 5,000 miles. Usually the problem is caused by a dead 12-volt battery which is used to turn on the engine. Leaving the electronics on with the engine off will cause the battery to drain. Replacing the battery costs about $300, depending on labor rates.

There are 3 average recalls, which are similar to other compact cars. The recalls all cover the hybrid inverter shutting down suddenly, which can make the car stall. Toyota has been able to fix the problem with a software update that can be installed for free at dealerships.

How Long Will the 2014 Toyota Prius Last?

A well-maintained 2014 Toyota Prius can last over 250,000 miles, which is slightly shorter than a Toyota Corolla. Buyers should be aware that the hybrid battery pack does need to be replaced every 100,000 to 150,000 miles, at a cost of $2,000 to $3,500. Regular annual maintenance costs are average for a compact car, according to data from Repair Pal, at $416 per year.

Since nearly all 2014 Toyota Prius models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the coolant temperature sensor for $450, engine mounts costing $700, and the emergency brake cable, which costs $435.

accountCircle Grizel N

No problems so far. We've always been lucky with Toyotas, which is why that is all we've owned since 1990. Before that we owned Hondas, Porsche, BMW, Nissan and Toyotas but have stuck to only buying Toyotas since then.

accountCircle Pasha K

It is reliable. The only issue I would say is it is pretty low to the ground. I have had the bottom of the car hit the ground a few times and it can be difficult to drive when there is frozen slush on the roads because of this.

accountCircle Julia R

This car is very reliable. I have driven it all over the east coast for the past 5 years and have yet to have any issues.

accountCircle Tom S

I have never had any problems with the 2014 Toyota Prius. Overall it seems like a reliable car to me.

accountCircle Dora H

It is very reliable. The only problem I have is with visibility. Sometimes visibility is bad when going in reverse or if you have to change lanes quickly.

accountCircle Darian T

It is very reliable. I have not had any problems with my Prius, except the recall issues, which were taken care of promptly.

accountCircle Jeffrey H

The Prius is extremely reliable. I haven't had any problems with it thus far. It's worked smoothly since I bought it

accountCircle Jim J

I haven't had any problems at all. I do the required maintenance and have changed the tires one time. Other than that -- everything is perfect.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is excellent in the 2014 Toyota Prius with a standard touchscreen stereo system which also controls other features for the car. Safety technology is good with optional rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, frontal collision warning, and lane departure warning systems.

Is the 2014 Toyota Prius a Good Value?

Yes, the 2014 Toyota Prius is a good value since there are no widespread problems. Blue book prices range from $16,650 to $17,500, making it more expensive than a Lexus CT or BMW i3. When new, the price range was $23,215 to $30,005. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 5% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Toyota Prius?

There are four models of the Prius available for 2014 from the Two all the way up to the top of-the-line Five.

Two is the entry-level model with:

  • 15-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Keyless Entry & Ignition
  • Cruise Control

  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • 6-Speaker Stereo System

Three is a step up, adding:

  • EnTune App Suite

Four is next in the lineup with:

  • Automatic Headlights
  • Power Driver’s Seat
  • SofTex Leatherette Seating
  • 8-Speaker JBL Stereo System

Five is the flagship model, which has:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • LED Head Lights

What Engines Come In the Toyota Prius?

The engine found in the 2014 Toyota Prius is a weak 1.8L 4-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, making a total of 134 horsepower. Fuel economy is excellent at up to 50 MPG. Performance is bad, taking 10.1 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Toyota Prius Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Toyota Prius?

The 2014 Toyota Prius is very comfortable for a car of its size. Interior materials are average with a lot of plastic on the dash, although the seats are well-made and comfortable.

Passenger space is excellent for a compact car with similar legroom in the backseats to midsize sedans.

How Much Storage Space Does the Toyota Prius Have?

Cargo space is great with enough room for 4-5 suitcases in the hatchback area with the seats up, and 7-8 suitcases with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Toyota Prius was introduced in 2010, and replaced by the fourth generation in 2016.

2012: Slightly revised front bumper, Entune app connectivity added.

2013: No major changes.

2014: No changes from previous year.

2015: Standard rearview camera on all models.

2016: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new styling and technology.

2017: Toyota Safety Sense package is now standard on all models.

2018: No major updates.

How Does the Toyota Prius Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Prius is the best hybrid car from 2014, which has earned its reputation for being extremely efficient and long-lasting.

The Toyota Corolla is another car from Toyota which costs about $4,000 less. Performance is better in the Toyota Corolla, but the Toyota Prius has more technology. We recommend the Toyota Prius for most people since it’s more efficient with more passenger room.

The Honda Civic is another small car which costs almost $7,000 less. Both the steering and suspension are better in the Honda Civic, however, the Toyota Prius has better long-term reliability ratings. We recommend the Toyota Prius as a used car since it has lower ownership costs.

Do Owners Recommend the Toyota Prius?

accountCircle Grizel N

Yes. I like the gas mileage the most. Other features I like is that the drivers seat adjusts upwards too. This is important for me since I am 5'1". And since I live in Southern California I also love the fan that goes on while it is parked if it gets too hot. It only brings the temperature down about 5-10 degrees but when it is 100 degrees outside, it matters.

Yes, I enjoy driving my Prius. It is super quiet, I feel safe behind the wheel, and I am happy with the miles per gallon I get.

The 2014 Toyota Prius is one of the best cars I've ever owned. Gas mileage is terrific...usually 50 mpg and sometimes even 60 mpg on a trip. I haven't had any trouble at all in 5 years. I like how the seat fits my back and gives me support while driving.

Toyota Prius 2014 review.
It gets great mileage. I get about 55 miles to the gallon. Very reliable. No real problems. The rear view through the back window is difficult and restrictive and needs to be changed in future models. The park button is also in a bad place and should be moved to where it cannot be pushed when trying to turn on the a/c.

Safety and gas mileage. A little small.
I love the gas mileage and the safety features. It has a 4 out of 5 for all crash tests plus a few that got a 5. The only thing I do not like is that it is kind of small. I have been thinking about getting an SUV for more room for storage and for my baby’s car seat.

Comfortable and great gas mileage!!
I love my Toyota Prius it is so reliable and very comfortable. The car has no problem keeping up and with power mode can be very quick. I love using e-mode when driving around town to see how little gas I can use. It only costs about $30 to fill up and gives me almost 500 miles on one tank.

Excellent mileage, lasts forever.
It is a great vehicle! It is two greatest advantages are 1) it is a hybrid, so excellent gas mileage and 2) it is a Toyota so it'll last forever. I am in 190,000 miles now and it still runs like it was new. The only issues I have had were very superficial and easily fixed. Highly recommend. I am hooked on prime!

Easy to handle, great on gas, and more space than you would think.
Does not go fast quickly, but the gas savings are worth it. Reliable as all hell. Spacious for passengers. Lots of room for your stuff too. Is a bit of pain to change the oil yourself, but for most this will not be a problem. The handling is pretty great too.

Prius, fun to drive, easy to park, and gets great mileage.
I love my Prius. It is fun to drive. Has plenty of pep for passing or going up hills. There are three modes, power, economy, and low. It gets great mileage. We figured out what we save in gas pays for the car in 7 years. The back seats fold down and I can carry about the same amount as a small pickup truck. Basically the only maintenance are oil changes and your milestone check ups.

Best gas mileage for older car and very reliable.
Very reliable, gets great gas mileage, and roomy great commuter car. Performance great. Can run the heater and air condition from the battery. The engine will go on about 5 -10 minutes every hour to recharge the battery. Air conditioner uses less battery. Great for recharging electric items. Can use inverter to run low wattage electric items. Gets 40-50 miles a gallon if tires are inflated to right air pressure.
accountCircle Gretchen L on March 27, 2021
The gas mileage is great AND it handles well in the snow! Living in an area where there is often snow, the fact that the bulk of the weight of the vehicle is over BOTH axles means that it handles remarkably well in snowy weather.
The biggest thing I dislike about the Prius is the annoying beeping it makes when you put the car in reverse. The gas mileage is great, and while it isn't the largest vehicle, it fits our family of 4 pretty well.

Pro gas mileage con check engine light.
It is a great car I love it. The gas mileage is what I love most. The only and main problem I am having is the check engine light keeps coming on randomly and has nothing to do with the car I have had it checked out a couple of times through Toyota care and they are unsure why. Besides that I love this car and recommend it.

Toyota Prius: comfortable, safe, and efficient.
My partner and I take a lot of road trips, and the Prius has been excellent in getting us where we need to go with no problems, all while saving us a ton of money on gas. It handles extremely well, accelerating quickly and braking immediately. So far it has not had any major repair needs, and it is pretty easy to maintain it. I personally prefer older cars because I like to fix them myself, and it can be very expensive when the Prius needs a check-up, but on the whole it is very convenient to maintain. It is very comfortable for a compact car, giving us plenty of room to stretch out while still leaving plenty of space to store anything from groceries to luggage. Overall I feel very safe in the car as well, and do not worry about it breaking down on the road or creating further injuries if I were to get into an accident.

It gets great gas mileage and is very reliable. I have done all scheduled maintenance and have never had any problems. I will keep this car until it dies and it has over 130k miles still going strong!! The only thing is it does go to 45 mog instead of 50 mpg over time.

I get can get up to 60/mpg which is AMAZING. My husband drives a truck and spends almost 3x as much as I do each month on gas. My car is such a money saver.
I love my because of the good gas mileage it gets. Makes it totally worth it. The only two complaints I would have about it is 1.) it doesn't do great in the snow but I understand that is because it's so light so I usually weigh it down with sandbags and 2.) my seat isn't that comfortable. The headrest come forward in a weird way and I feel like my head is leaning forward. Also the seat doesn't have great lumbar support and I drive a lot so that can become uncomfortable. But the gas milage makes up for all of that.

Our Prius is very reliable, for one thing. We've never had major issues with it and are closing in on 200, 000 miles soon. I haven't had any problems at all with this vehicle. I love it! I didn't think I'd like the 'flying buttress' console design, but I have grown used to it and it is not an issue. The mileage is great, and Toyota will always be my favorite brand. I did knock off the spoiler (do not ask) and am looking at about $600 to replace it. But that was my fault, and is no reflection on the brand.

Comfortable and reliable family car.
Very roomy in the back. The interface is easy to use for the driver and front seat passenger. The ac was hard to figure out at first, but it is nice having the rear ac vents to keep the car cool overall. The outside stayed shiny and nice, the only thing is that it's hard to gauge distance from the inside of the car because the front is short whereas the back is very long. It can be hard to park if you do not have the right technique in place.

This is the second Prius I have had. They are very reliable and the money saved on gas is amazing. I have found there are no major issues as long as the car is serviced as needed and taken care of. The vehicle has been driven on long trips and is very comfortable and is very roomy to carry an assortment of things.

I like the camera for backing up
I have had the carsense 2014, and it has been amazing the whole time. I have not had one problem with it.

It can go fast too, you just lose out on gas mileage when you floor it
Love the gas mileage. The rise is smooth and there is enough storage.

Best Gas mileage of any hybrid and reliably
No complaints. The gas mileage is fantastic. Have never had any problems at all. It is very comfortable and has a lot more room than people think.

Fancy car. Fancier wallet.
The Prius is the best investment any car owner can make. Great mileage and hybrid option keep more money in your wallet. Hatchback and 4 seats provide tons of space. Quality and reliability will outlast most vehicles in the same cost range. Last but not least - environmentally friendly.

That it gets 51 mpg and is good for the environment.
I love the gas mileage and how roomy the vehicle is. The price was also very competitive. I don't like that the vehicle isn't good in the winter.

Prius is small, but generally reliable.
The car is great - good fuel mileage - good storage - just the road noise is loud sometimes and the car is small generally. We also have a Toyota Venza that feels more like an SUV, the Prius feels more like a compact car. The wheels are small - that is a big part of it.

Gas mileage is very nice and gas is cheap.
Very good, reliable. Nice gas mileage, cheap gas. Has sports mode, eco friendly mode, and regular mode. The seats are nice and easily adjustable, the shift stick is very easy to get used to, and the brakes are sensitive but not too sensitive. It charges the battery while you are parked so you can gain an extra few miles from the electric battery rather than using gas.

The gas mileage is the top reason for owning a Prius.
It rides well. Very comfortable Has great gas mileage. Drove 500 mile on a tank. It is very quiet. The drawback is that there are too many blind spots.

After 6 years, I still love my Prius!
Great gas mileage! More space than expected. Very comfortable - even for long road trips. 160,000 + miles and no problems, just regular preventive stuff (oil change, new tires, tune up etc). I love my Prius and plan to keep it several more years and I'll probably get a Prius as my next car too.
