2015 Toyota Prius Review: Very Efficient & Reliable Hybrid Car With Low Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Oct 15, 2022

The 2015 Toyota Prius lasts around 300,000 miles with only minor A/C system and headlight issues. At $17,350 to $18,850, it’s slightly more expensive than other hybrid cars, but worth the cost for the exceptional reliability.

Fuel economy is outstanding, there’s plenty of legroom in the back seats and technology is up to date.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Performance is very dull from the hybrid powertrain, the digital gauge cluster is cluttered and there’s a lot of road noise.

Is the 2015 Toyota Prius a Good Used Car?

Toyota Prius: my favorite!
I love my Toyota Prius! The gas mileage alone is enough to make Toyota the only brand of car I want to buy! It is surprisingly roomy, has great add-on technology available like built-in GPS, and is the best hybrid car I could ask for.

Toyota Prius - the best all-around car.
Our Toyota Prius has been a great car for us. It gets great gas mileage, has the features we wanted, and is pretty roomy for a small vehicle. It has never left us stranded and only needs the normal maintenance like oil and filter changes, tires rotated, and air filter replaced.

2015 Prius persona series.
It has a very roomy interior with plenty of cargo area. I have had absolutely no maintenance issues—all recalls have been addressed even though I had no previous issues. I love the back-up camera, ( the first I have had) it captures a very wide rear view.

The phenomenal gas mileage at an affordable price.
I absolutely love the gas mileage I get. The handling is great. Comfortable ride. However I find this vehicle jinxed as it has been involved in three accidents, none was I at fault.

Great if you are looking to save on gas!
My little Prius is awesome. I say little because it is a small vehicle but I have a spare and two kids, I also do a carpool once a week for 2 other kids to soccer so it can accommodate a family. I love how little gas it uses. I hardly ever have to fill up and when I do it only costs me like twenty bucks!

Mama loves her Prius a whole lot!

Prius is a great family car.
The Prius gets excellent gas mileage. It is pretty roomy. We fit three high school kids in the back seat for hours long road trips with minimal complaining. The hatch is great. We have hauled bricks and mulch and dirt with no problems at all. The car is very reliable and has needed minimal maintenance.

Love my low-maintenance Prius!
Not a single issue with my 2015 Toyota Prius. It runs amazingly well, only needs an oil change every 5,000 miles, and is easy and relatively inexpensive to service. Very low maintenance. Plus, I feel extremely safe in this car. The hatchback is great for hauling things around as I often end up doing.

Faulty design cost passed on to consumer?
I have a Prius persona 2015 that needs a Engine Wire Harness and a CVT - Shift Selector Actuator. Both eaten into by rodents because Toyota used soy on the rubber insulation - cost from Toyota dealership in boston $10.000

Great for gas savings and commuting.
Overall great performance and gas savings. Small and tight. Best for commuting to and from work. Would not take on long distance travel due to compact feel. Looking to trade out for tesla for better status and more self respect. Not a family vehicle.

Pearl white 2015 Prius, can go to Las Vegas, around Las Vegas, and back on one full tank of gas. Depending on the stay amount, of course.
It's a pearl white 2015. The performance and reliability of the vehicle is up to par and haven't had a problem yet. The comfort level of this vehicle is really comfortable and can take up to 4 passengers, 5 including the driver. A lot of trunk space for bigger items and the back seats can fold down to give more room for other items. Features are really basic, unless you get a certain model after 2.

My life buying and using Toyotas.
I have no problems with my car. I have only changed the oil and the tires on my Toyota Prius. Toyota's have been good to me through the years. My prior car was a 2006 Toyota corolla that lasted over 10 years before I crashed it up. I only repaired the clutch and timing belt once on that car in over 10 years, beside regular maintenance like oil changes.

Paint hazing
This is our third Prius over the last 15 years. We have loved the reliability, maneuverability, and gas mileage of all three. However, our current Prius, bought new in 2015, began showing hazing and dulling of the paint on the roof of the car last year. It is getting much worse and is now beginning to fail on the sides along the window ledges. We have always taken good care of the car, but the paint is looking more and more like a "junker" car. It is very disappointing.

Very affordable, stylish & comfortable.
The corolla is great on gas, I also like the backup feature, also like the informative dashboard. The body style is also very nice! The sleek design and comfortable seating with large back seats are also a plus. The large trunk is great for traveling.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Prius?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2015 Prius offers a comfortable ride with room for five while also earning high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Prius a 4.4/5 praising the spacious cabin, but doesn’t like the excessive road noise.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Prius 4.7/5 enjoying the excellent fuel efficiency, but owners don’t like the boring driving experience.

What Common Problems Does the 2015 Toyota Prius Have?

Common problems found on the 2015 Toyota Prius include a moldy odor in the cabin, brake issues, as well as burnt-out headlights. Overall, these problems are less severe than in other hybrid cars with lower repair costs as well.

A moldy odor in the cabin is a complaint from owners in the first 20,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a clogged A/C drain line which will allow mold to form. It’s a common issue on a lot of Toyota cars. Clearing out the drain line is a simple process, costing around $50 at a shop.

Brake issues, including the pedal going to the floor, are another issue reported by owners at around 40,000 miles. The problem is usually a sign of air in the brake lines after a fluid change. Bleeding the lines, then topping off with fluid is something Toyota or brake shops can handle for under $100.

Burnt-out headlights also show up on some Prius models in the first 50,000 miles. Headlight bulbs tend to last longer, although on some Prius models the OEM bulbs burn out quickly. Changing out the bulbs costs around $150. If there is a problem with the headlight ballast then it costs around $200 more.

There’s only 1 recall on the 2015 Prius, which is better than other hybrid cars. The recall covers the hybrid system, which may shut down suddenly in some models. Toyota will install a software update for free on the affected cars, which solves the problem.

How Long Will the 2015 Toyota Prius Last?

A well-maintained 2015 Toyota Prius should last around 300,000 miles, although, owners should be prepared to replace the battery pack at about 150,000 miles for around $3,500. The Prius outlasts the competition including the Chevy Volt. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than other hybrid cars, at $421 per year, according to data from Repair Pal.

Since nearly all used 2015 Toyota Prius models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the exhaust manifold for $600, radiator fan relay costing $100, and the HVAC blend door actuator which costs around $500.

accountCircle Jeannie Z

The only problem I have had is that sometimes the interior light is left on when I do not even think I have turned it on. It runs the battery down and the car is totally dead.

accountCircle Dianne N

I bought it recently so I do not have a comparison yet however so far so good. I do not anticipate problems with the mechanics of the car as it is a Toyota and they have a reputation of being reliable.

accountCircle Glenn F

The 2015 Toyota Prius five is very reliable in how it handles and runs very smoothly with apple power for the freeways in the us. The two problems are that the height of the car is too low so it gets caught in some of the high speed bumps and parking dividers. The issue is that it is hard to see out of the back window.

accountCircle John W

My car has never had any issues. Every 5,000 miles, I take it in for service, and the mechanics say that it is an excellent car. I have driven it 75,000 miles and I have never had any issues with it so far.

accountCircle Helen H

Toyota Prius is indeed quite reliable. It has had few problems or issues since it was purchased by me.

accountCircle Ruby R

This is my second Prius and there have been no maintenance required other than oil change and tire rotation.

accountCircle Stacey G

It is very reliable. I'm a single retired woman who needs a vehicle that I can rely on in all kinds of weather.

accountCircle Andrew B

I got it used. So far very reliable car. The only problem I have ever had with the car was that my dashboard light and my speedometer would not work at the same time.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great in the 2015 Toyota Prius with a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen display and Bluetooth connectivity. Optional upgrades include a JBL stereo as well as Toyota’s EnTune apps. Safety technology is also good with a standard rearview camera. Optional safety features include frontal collision warning, lane departure warning, as well as adaptive cruise control systems.

Is the 2015 Toyota Prius a Good Value?

Yes, the 2015 Toyota Prius is a great value since it’s a very reliable hybrid car with low ownership costs. Blue book prices range from $17,350 to $18,850, making it more expensive than a Nissan Leaf or Honda CR-Z. When new, the price range was $23,215 to $30,005. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 8% of its current value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Toyota Prius was introduced in 2010 and was replaced by the fourth generation in 2016.

2013: New model “Persona Special Edition” with minor changes.

2014: No major changes.

2015: Rearview camera is standard across all models.

2016: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new interior, exterior, and engines.

2017: Standard Toyota Safety Sense package on all models.

2018: No major updates.

How Does the Toyota Prius Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Prius is one of the best hybrid cars available from 2015, offering extremely dependable engines and lower ownership costs than the competition.

The BMW i3 is another hybrid car which costs about $4,000 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the BMW i3, whereas the Toyota Prius has better long term reliability ratings. We recommend the Toyota Prius on the used market since they have lower ownership costs.

The Lexus CT is a competitor available which costs about $2,000 more. Both the Toyota Prius and Lexus CT are built on the same platform with a more luxurious interior found in the Lexus CT. We recommend the Toyota Prius since they are easier to find on the used market, but you can’t go wrong with either hybrid.

Do Owners Recommend the Toyota Prius?

Yes. I have never had a problem with it. The gas mileage is great. There is plenty of. Space inside and it is comfortable.

accountCircle Dianne N

Yes I believe so... I drive a lot for my work and I can see the savings with cost of gas these days. I like the fact that it does not cost 55.00 to fill my tank as it did with my Kia. Yes I know the gas tank is smaller however I still see the difference.

accountCircle Glenn F

Very reliable and get good gas mileage on average of about 48 miles a gallon. The car has ample space for 5 people and the trunk area is holds a lot for everyday shopping.

accountCircle John W

It is an excellent vehicle! I love it! I drive it every day at least 30 miles. It is great for the whole family! I am a college student, and it makes filling my tank extremely affordable. I fill the tank every 450 miles, and spend about $20 to fill up!

accountCircle Kelsey B

Yes, I do believe that Toyota Prius is a good vehicle. It drives quite smoothly and rarely has issues.

accountCircle Mike M

One of the main features of a Prius is its ability to save gas. I have also had no maintenance required other than oil change, tire rotation and balancing.

accountCircle Mary Lou P

Yes it’s excellent. Not a bit of unexpected trouble since buying new. Comfortable, great mileage, quiet.

accountCircle Abigail P

YES! Safe, great on gas. I spend about $50 dollars in gas every month. I also feel very safe while driving other than the fact that I have a hard time seeing my blind spots. Thinking of getting fish eyes to change this situation. I also love that I can see the speed I am going big and in actual numbers. Helps me make sure I stay at the speed limit.

The good and the bad of my vehicle.
Reliable, good on gas mileage, the only problem I have is that not enough storage for big loads, not good for long distance travel especially if you are traveling on high level highways, not much power to go up the mountain, not much comfort in driving especially on long distance driving like state to other state driving.
accountCircle Margaret W on June 20, 2021
My Prius suits my needs. I will always buy a hybrid.
Gas mileage is as good as they advertise. It is comfortable for small trips, but on long journeys, you have to get out periodically to stretch your back and gives your posterior a break (not a lot of padding). You cannot tote big items in the hatchback.

Toyota Prius: an informative vehicle.
My Prius is a great vehicle. It is very spacious and is very comfortable. Having the ability to switch between 'eco mode' and 'power mode' has been quite nice. Power mode allows me to make lane changes and left turns at a better pace and acceleration. Eco mode makes cruising affordable and does not make me feel guilty for taking a longer route. The dashboard features of the Prius are great, showing how it is performing, how and where energy is being processed as it is running, and giving insight on long term efficiency from my drives. Overall, it is a great vehicle.

Side panel issue on 2015 Toyota Prius.
The biggest issue with this car is that the right side panel will lose the fasteners and they are expensive to replace. To keep that side panel in place you have to use duck tape. It happens when on the highway and high winds. I have seen it on the 2016 models too.
accountCircle heidi D on June 6, 2021
Gas mileage, backup camera, small car, downside is the headlights are dim.
Get gas mileage so a tank of gas can last a long time. Although the gas tank is only 9 gallons it will still last a long time. I would travel to work everyday about 18 mile in the summer and a tank of gas last me roughly two weeks. The car is small and compact which is very nice makes driving the vehicle much easier for me. The back up camera is a great feature. It allows for a better view when backing up. Also when using the backup camera a beeping sound happens which is nice to let you know you are in reverse. A problem with the car is the headlights are quite dim which make it harder to see at night. Also the headlights have dark patches which makes it harder to see too.
accountCircle Andrew S on June 3, 2021
Great car that gets great mileage.
I love this car. I regularly get over 50 miles to the gallon. I do not think I will ever buy any car that is not a Prius ever again. It is very versatile - it is amazing how much cargo you can get in the back with the seats down. The only downside is visibility is not great, though that is greatly improved if you put the back seats down.
accountCircle Ben M on June 2, 2021
Eco-friendly car with plenty of room for a taller driver.
What I like most about my 2015 Toyota Prius is feeling like I am making a slight difference in lowering the world's collective gas emissions. Whereas a tank of gas in my old 2000 Camry would last me about two weeks, a tank on my Prius will regularly go a full month without needing a refill. This is on eco mode - one of three different driving modes on the Prius - which clocks in between 48-51 mpg on my (mostly) highway driving. The car is roomier than it looks, providing enough room for me to stretch out my 6'0' frame (with room to spare, actually). My one complaint about the car is its back-half visibility, as the hatchback tends to 'cut' the rear view mirror in half, and the passenger windows near the trunk are quite small compared to other Toyotas.
accountCircle Jay W on May 31, 2021
High reliability and low maintenance costs.
The performance is okay but it is reliable. Since Toyota Prius is a hybrid car, it starts slow then speed up regularly. It helps save gas but since it does not run fast, it runs slow while driving up hills. You can literally see other vehicles passing you. It has a big trunk that can fill with two to four 28 inches luggage.
accountCircle William K on May 30, 2021
2015 Prius is where it is at!
I love my Prius. It is so reliable. I get around 430 miles with a full tank. I just have to make sure I am on top of the oil changes. It drives very smoothly. The backup camera is great. I have had zero problems with it. I would highly recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a great car for a fairly low price.

Smooth, good for the environment, and saves me money. I love the Prius!
I love the Prius. It gets great mileage, I only have to fill the tank about once a month (driving short distances, that is). Also, it is much better for the environment. Frequently I ask myself, why doesn't everyone have a Prius. The one negative would probably be how it performs in snow, I imagine it is not the ideal car if you live in a mountainous region where there is ice/snowfall in the winter.

I love my Prius. It fits everything I have ever needed. Drives smooth and the space is very comfortable. I went with a lovely blue color. I do wish I went with the sunroof. I do not love the back window sometimes the middle bar blocks the view but you do get used to that and adjust.

Best car decision I've ever made.
I have a 2015 Toyota Prius and I absolutely love my car. I am going on 6 years of owning it, and I have yet encountered an issue with my car. I have a long commute to work and it was the reason why we decided to purchase a hybrid. The Toyota Prius is very economical. The reason we chose Toyota is because it was the first mass produced hybrid car and they are a very reputable manufacturer that has been in business making cars in over 85 years. The Toyota Prius is a very reliable car. My model can fit up to five people. The truck space is very large, especially when you put the back seats down. Don't the let compact size fool you. We have taken our Toyota Prius on many long trips. We have no regrets and feel we made the best choice. We are very happy with our purchase.

Good but I did have an expensive repair about nine months ago. I love Toyota Prius and I have something that I carry in my pocket so do not a key to start the car. I find it has good mileage per gallon and works well. I also think it will last me a long time. Now it has about 170,000 miles on it.

Perfect for families and for road trips.
It doesn't lock up if there's key inside. And it's really quiet so sometimes old people get scared because they don't hear the car. The seat heater is slow. The seats are really comfortable and warm (really cold when it's cold to). The car is not too big and not too small perfect for road trips and as a family car.

Love the car. It is really reliable and is low maintenance. The only downside is that it is not as powerful as some other cars so you really have to punch the gas sometimes to match speeds when merging. Gas mileage is fantastic! I travel fifty miles one way for work so good gas mileage is a must.

Toyota Prius. Comfortable, smooth and economical drive.
The Toyota Prius is an absolute joy to drive. It handles incredibly well and is very smooth on the road. The interior looks great and the dashboard gives great information about the battery to gas power. There is a lot of space in the trunk and the back seats fold down to give even more space. I have a red 2015 Toyota Prius. It was originally my husband's car but I recently started driving it. The Prius is a great car. It is a very comfortable car to drive. There is plenty of legroom in the front and back. The back seat has an armrest in the center that folds down. The back seats lay down to give a lot of extra room to a very spacious trunk. It has a sunroof to open on nice days. It had automatic climate control to keep the inside of the car the same as the temperature outside. I live in the south, so that helps on those really hot days of summer. It is a 4 cylinder automatic hybrid. It uses gas and a rechargeable battery. It gets 50 miles per gallon pretty much all the time, which I love. I really do not have anything negative to say. I love my car!

Gas saver with long distance
The only problem I have surfaced with the car that I bought used was that it needed a maintenance on the cooling performance on the hybrid battery and the dealership was charging me a ridiculous amount. The car nonetheless is great and I save so much on gas

Efficient and comfortable.
The Toyota Prius is a very reliable and efficient vehicle. If your primary goal is finding a car that will get you where you need to go as efficiently as possible, this is the car for you. Additionally the car is very comfortable and the interior is quite sleek.

People should know how great a Hybrid is. It does not mean I am some geek. It means we care about the planet. Everyone should try one. This is a fun car with purpose.
My vehicle is great! I had an old Mercedes-Benz convertible and thought I would never give it up. But my need to help the environment got me into the Prius which I love. It is a true economy car but it helps me give back to the planet and lessens our expenditures on fuel. This is the car that commutes...the Mercedes-Benz is now our vacation fun car. Call it the best of both worlds!

Great car! A hybrid, economical, family favorite you will love!
Fast, quiet motors, a hybrid, and economical. Also comes in many colors. Also Bluetooth and phone connected for ease of listening to music, and taking calls on the go.

It gets great gas mileage.
I like that it costs very little to run. I can fill the tank with less than half the gas of my old car and go twice as far. It do could do a much better job at handling on the road though.

It is a turquoise color that I love!
My Prius saves a ton of gas, and is very reliable. I got a great deal from capitol Toyota in Salem, and have not regretted it since. If you keep the car on eco mode it saves a lot of gas. I have owned the car for two years and have not any mechanical issues with it. I love this car.

Great fuel economy and performance.
This car is an epitome of savings for me. Its fuel economy is beyond what I have ever seen. I haven't had any form of issues with it. Other than it responding slowly to acceleration sometimes on the highway, I will choose the car over and over again or perhaps a newer model if I can afford it.

The Prius a car that you will love over time.
It is a very easy car to drive and requires generally low maintenance. Most people think that Prius' do not go fast or are a waste of money, but it saves a lot of money in the long run. It is comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time and has good navigation.

The fuel mileage the Prius gets, being over 45 miles to the gallon for in-town trips and over 50 on highway trips.
I love the fuel mileage I get from my Prius. I wish the car was a little larger inside. I wish my car had a sunroof. The ease of driving and parking my Prius makes me love the car even with the two things I feel are missing.

It is a hybrid car, which is cool all by itself. Need I say more.
The only thing that happen was a clog in the a/c tubing that leaked water all over the floors of car. Easy fix, but now left with a mildew smell in car which is an easy fix as well but do not have the money right now for a detail. Other than this love the car and have had no other issues.

Prius is a reliable ride.
Our lease was up this year and we like our car so much that we decided to keep it. We looked at new Prius lines but were not interested in trading up. Our car is extremely reliable and makes road trips very affordable. The seats are comfortable and it's easy to get in and out of the car. There is enough room in the front and back, although I wish the trunk had a little more room in the trunk cover is very flimsy.

Our Prius performs well for us arthritic senior citizens.
Our Prius has been very reliable. It gets very good gas mileage and is surprisingly comfortable for a small car. The lumbar support is good. We have a good GPS and have subscribed to enjoyable Sirius radio. Being plastic, it does not do well cosmetically in crowded parking lots. But we like it and would buy another when this one goes south.
