2017 Toyota Prius Review: Problem Free Compact Hybrid Loaded With Excellent Technology

Alex Showalter
Nov 12, 2022

The 2017 Toyota Prius lasts around 250,000 miles with only minor windshield and brake rotor issues. At $21,700 to $25,35, it’s expensive, but worth it for the low ownership costs paired with outstanding fuel economy.

likeFilled The Good
Fuel economy is better than nearly every other car on the market, there’s a ton of standard safety equipment, and passenger room is excellent.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Rear visibility is limited due to the sloping window, performance is poor from the hybrid powertrain, and it’s annoying to have the gauge cluster in the center of the dash.

Is the 2017 Toyota Prius a Good Used Car?

As a plug-in hybrid, it gets about 30 miles of electric range prior to going into hybrid mode.
It's a plug-in hybrid. I love the mileage, and the electric range of about 30 miles. The internal technology is also wonderful.

The Dutiful Prius Won't Let You Down
The gas efficiency is unbeatable. Its extremely ergonomic in that its not to fancy but is very comfortable and meets all of my needs. It is a very reliable vehicle and I never doubt its dependability.

Something others should know about my car is, it saves gas money.
I am very comfortable with my car and I am very satisfied with the gas consumption because I do not have to put in gas that often. I don't have any specific complaints about my car.

Grey Prius has a nice ring to it.
I love our Prius. It is very sufficient. Smooth when driving. Very quiet. Good for the economy. Definitely good on gas. I have not yet driven it on a long road trip, but one day I will. So far, no problems have raised. I share the car with my parents. We all love using the Prius.

Why you should buy a Prius: comfortable, eco-friendly, and safe.
Great fuel efficiency, I often get about 40-50 mpg. I like the safety features, especially blind spot protection. Backup camera is very clear and makes me feel safe. Comfortable driving experience. Quiet performance. More environmentally friendly. Keyless start is very convenient.

My car is a grey 2017 Toyota Prius.
I love this car! Fun and easy to drive, great gas mileage, and lots of room. I have had the car for about three years and it is still in great condition, I have had no problems with the vehicle. Toyota was very helpful with the process of buying the car as well. I would definitely recommend this car!

My car performance is very good.
No problem in my own vehicle. My vehicle performance is very good. My vehicle is very comfortable. I love my vehicle. Attached to arguably the best-looking iteration of the car. Great running vehicle. He had a Toyota Camry which he had traded in for the 4 runner, it was a nice vehicle but too small for us and unable to fit.

Eco efficient and reliable car
Great gas mileage, reliable, and safe. Does need a lot of maintenance and the battery is small. The tires last a while and aren't too expensive to replace. The feel is very good and smooth. The oil change is not too complex if you know how to do it. Very eco friendly and will help save you money on gas.

Do not buy a Prius from Toyota.
All parts are made of plastic, the car gets damage with anything super fast. Bad quality, and most important my 2017 Prius was being recall... Parking brake and other issues and since a week after I bought this brand new car there's a really bad smell like a fart that happens when I am driving from nowhere and Toyota didn't do anything to fix all of this issues. I wouldn't buy a Toyota Prius ever again or Toyota car ever again.

Car gets great gas mileage.
I really enjoy my Prius. The only things I feel could be better is the location of the auxiliary port it is behind the cup holders and the chargers tend to get bent because they are cramped. I also wish there was a little more room in the back seat. I have a rear facing car seat that barely fits. My husband and I have to move our seats up and are cramped. If I knew before I bought my car that this was an issue I would have purchased a bigger car instead.
accountCircle Jill M
It's a great car on gas wonderful at over 50 miles to the gallon.
I think its kind of an ugly spacey looking car, I love the gas mileage, I like the inside that looks like I have an iPad, comfy seats, expensive oil changes and expensive updates and fixes which I don't like, the regular standard. Battery already died with less than 40,000 miles everything links to my iPhone which makes things easier with a great charger, good car overall!

Fun little machine, Keyless entry safety feature
I like this car because of the fuel economy. I can get about 400 miles to a tank of gas. It's a little sporty feeling but is also small. The seats are not very comfortable especially if you go on longer trips. Because this vehicle is a hybrid you don't hear the engine so I have forgotten to actually shut the car off. Recommendation for an alarm if the car is left in park and running for a long period of time would be helpful.

I really enjoy driving this car. It's great on fuel economy and its loaded with the latest technology. It's very roomy and fits my personality.

Good for long distance travel.
I actually do not have many problems with my car I just rather have a mid size SUV. Toyota is reliable brand of car and Prius' are great if you want to save money on gas and travel long miles. It is a very reliable car and I feel safe in it. It is pretty comfortable I just wish I didn't get leather seats and there was better air flow to back of the car for my child.

My review of my Toyota Prius.
This car looks great and drives well in both city and highway. I especially like the safety features and the radar cruise control. Unfortunately I find the bucket seats uncomfortable. The interior has lots of space for passengers and cargo.. I am a low mileage driver, and this is a second car for the family. It has served well on both interstate highways and backroads, where I go for occasional photo shoots.

That it gets me from point a to point b.
I like the monitor in the mid control, auto break, auto parking very safe. I do not like only 4 seats.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Prius?

  • Consumer Reports says the Prius is the most efficient car they’ve ever tested that doesn’t plug in, with very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Prius a 4.7/5 praising the very quiet cabin, but doesn’t like the central instrument panel.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Prius at 4.6/5, enjoying the excellent reliability, but owners don’t like the lack of power.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Toyota Prius Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Toyota Prius include cracked windshields, worn-out brake rotors, as well as rattles in the dash. Overall, these problems are minor compared to other hybrids, leading to low repair costs as well.

Cracked windshields are the most common complaint from Toyota Prius owners in the first 10,000 miles. The design of the windshield makes it more prone to cracking than other cars if it’s hit with a rock, especially at the top corners. Replacing the windshield costs $500 to $800, depending on labor rates.

Worn-out brake rotors have also shown up on some Toyota Prius models in the first 30,000 miles. Excessive hard braking can lead to the brake rotors wearing out quicker than in some other cars since they are not as large. Replacing the brake rotors costs around $600, and fixes the problem.

Rattles in the dash are another complaint from Toyota Prius owners at around 20,000 miles. The dash is held together primarily by plastic clips, and if any of them come loose or break there will be rattles. Diagnosing the source of the problem and replacing the clips costs roughly $100.

There are 3 recalls on the 2017 Toyota Prius, which is better than some competitors. The most serious recall is for the engine wiring harness, which may short out. Toyota will inspect the harness for any damage, and replace affected models for free. Other recalls cover a parking brake cable as well as the spare tire.

How Long Will the 2017 Toyota Prius Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Toyota Prius should be able to last over 250,000 miles, which is much longer than other hybrid cars like the BMW i3. Buyers should be aware of the lithium ion battery pack failures which cost over $5,000, yet usually don’t show up until around 200,000 miles. Regular annual maintenance costs are more affordable than other hybrid models as well, at $457 per year, according to Repair Pal.

As 2017 Toyota Prius models reach over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the A/C evaporator for $980, rear trailing arm for $325, as well as the throttle body, which costs around $600.

I have not had any problems with my Prius. I drive it a lot, and there has never been a problem with it in the three plus years I have owned it.

accountCircle Elle D

I have not had any issues thus far with my 2017 Toyota Prius. I consider it to be a reliable car. The only issues I have ever had are with the tires popping easily. I do wish it came with a spare!

accountCircle Christine M

There was a recall on the first year regarding a faulty engine wire. Seats are a bit uncomfortable after a long drive.

accountCircle Imoto H

I have not had any problems with this vehicle. I take it in for routine maintenance and it drives fine. So yes I would say it is reliable.

accountCircle LeAnne D

It is very reliable. It has yet to leave me stranded anywhere and requires only basic vehicle maintenance, such as oil changes.

accountCircle Ash H

It is a very reliable car, the only issue I ever have with the car is the oil changing factor but that is with any car. Extremely reliable and surprisingly good at going up steep hills.

accountCircle Natalie S

Toyota Prius is very reliable. This is my second Prius didn't have any issues with the one before or the current Prius

accountCircle Jeanette R

It had one issue with the Bluetooth, but it could have been with my phone. It sometimes doesn't connect with my phone to play music from it. To make sure that it will, ,I need to start the music from my phone before I get in the car.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard offering a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen display while a larger 7-inch touchscreen is available as an option. Safety technology is excellent offering a lot of driver assistance features. The 2017 Prius has a standard rear view camera, lane departure warning, frontal collision warning, automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, as well as steering assistance.

Is the 2017 Toyota Prius a Good Value?

Yes, the 2017 Toyota Prius is a great value for a reliable small car with outstanding fuel economy. Blue book prices range from $21,700 to $25,325, making it more expensive than a Chevy Volt or Honda Accord Hybrid. When new, the original MSRP was $23,475 to $30,015. Depreciation is better than other compact cars, only losing about 7% of its value per year.

What Engines Come In the Toyota Prius?

The 2017 Prius comes with a weak 1.8L 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain which makes 121 horsepower with the gasoline engine and electric motor, while getting good gas mileage at up to 52 MPG. It’s paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Performance is slow, taking 9.8 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Toyota Prius Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Toyota Prius?

The 2017 Toyota Prius is a very comfortable compact hybrid hatchback with seating for up to five people. The front seats are well-made, supportive, and hold up well over time, making them great for long drives.

Passenger room is great throughout the cabin with enough leg room in the back seats to easily fit adults.

How Much Storage Space Does the Toyota Prius Have?

Cargo space is fantastic for a compact car since the 2017 Toyota Prius has a sloping hatchback design. There’s enough room for 5-7 suitcases in the trunk area, and around 8-10 with the seats folded flat.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fourth generation of the Toyota Prius was introduced in 2016, and is still being made in 2022.

2015: Standard rearview camera on all models.

2016: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation offering new exterior, interior, and engine.

2017: Toyota Safety Sense driver aids are standard on all models.

2018: No major changes.

2019: New all-wheel-drive model added, minor styling changes, models renamed.

2020: Standard 7-inch screen on all models with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.

2021: Minor changes to the driver safety systems.

How Does the Toyota Prius Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Prius is the best hybrid car of 2017. The Prius may not be very fast or engaging to drive, although it’s an excellent choice for shoppers looking for efficiency.

The Tesla Model 3 is an all-electric competitor which costs around $10,000 more. Performance is more fun in the Tesla Model 3, while the Toyota Prius stands out with significantly better overall build quality. For 2017 we recommend the Toyota Prius, although if you want an all-electric car, the Model 3 is a good choice.

The BMW i3 is another hybrid which is available for $5,000 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the BMW i3, while the Toyota Prius has much better reliability ratings as it ages. We recommend the Toyota Prius since they last longer with lower ownership costs.

Yes, I've had a regular Prius before, so I knew the quality would be good. But I really like driving it in EV mode, that is, all electric from the wall charge. Most of my driving is local since I work from my home office. Therefore I only need to fill up the tank once every 2 or 3 months.

Spacious and fuel efficient, plus great design.
I love the 3 options of power: eco, normal, power. Eco is great for regular driving and errands. Normal and power are great for speeds above 50 on the highway. It is amazing on gas, and fills up with just $20. I love all the sensors around the vehicle too. Great trunk space.

2017 Prius pros and cons- honest review!
My Prius gets amazing gas mileage, is easy to drive, gives a smooth drive without road noise, and is very reliable. The touch screen on the dash is a bit outdated but it works fine. If I could go back, I would have invested in seat heaters to make the car more comfortable.

Beautiful blue Prius prime.
I enjoy driving my blue Prius prime. It's a beautiful car and color and is so sleek. It's easy to drive and has nice built in safety features (backup camera and starts beeping if you get. Too close to the car in front). It has a range of approximately 25-30 miles after being charged. It's a pleasure to drive. Only downside is that it has 4 seats and a small trunk but is perfect for a single female.

The Toyota Prius is my dream car. It is a hybrid, which is important to me, cutting down use of fossil fuels. I average 45/50 miles per gallon, so it is very cost effective. It is the perfect road trip car, very spacious and a good stereo system. It is a bit perilous during the winter time with not the best reaction in ice and snow, but that only affects me maybe two months out of the year. The gas efficiency and level of reliability are top-notch. You barely notice a dent in the gas meter form normal small day to day activities. I have never had a single issue with the drivability of this vehicle, and for a busy person it is essential to have a car that does not have problems. As a person who appreciates ergonomics this vehicle suits my needs perfectly. It's not overly fancy but it's perfectly comfortable. Its large enough to accommodate space for a group outing along with luggage or gear, and the onboard electronics are sufficient enough to satisfy anyone who does not need anything outside of normal connectivity.

Comfort and reliability in a mid-sized, four-door family vehicle.
I have had no problems with my car. I have gotten as much ad 61 mpg. It is quite picky about the type of fuel it likes. It is comfortable to drive on long trips, as it has heated seats and a reliable heating and cooling system. The means of adjusting the seats is quite nice, as it will adjust up, down, forward and back and at angles.

Fuel saver for the Road Runner.
Wagon has more space for sure but unless you are a very careful driver, the mpg is just ok at 35-40 mph. I wish there were more vents in the back. It is hard to use latch system with car seats. Overall I do feel it is a safe vehicle. Roof rack system not easily accessible on this model. If that is important to you, see if the model comes with OEM.

I like that it is a hybrid. I feel very safe and it's easy to drive. However, I dislike the technology. I feel like a lot of it unnecessary and difficult to use (navigation, bluetooth, voice command, etc). I do love the safety features, though. I also wish it came in different interior colors.

A van and a wagon cross. Very functional car, more cargo space than many SUV's.
The Prius v has good cargo space and would be a great car for a small family. I'drives nicely, is very comfortable and gets great mileage. It is larger than the regular Prius so it gets about 40 mpg instead of the 50 that the regular Prius gets. I have driven sporty cars before so I Does not perform like I have been accustomed to. My driving has slowed down a bit which is a good thing and I pay attention to driving styles that will get the best mileage. My only complaint is that the sides of the windshield create slight blind spots especially I'm Driving on very curvy roads. The cargo space is amazing with the back seats down and you could sleep inside if you were stuck on a rainy camp trip or carry some lumber inside.

Prius: quiet, smooth, attractive.
It is been the most reliable vehicle I have owned so far. The interior includes faux leather that is breathable and soft. It came standard with GPS and navigation which comes in handy when roaming around in areas that you are not necessarily familiar with. Another feature that I find really helpful is the three drive settings (eco, normal, and power). They allow for different driving dynamics for different situations. If the car is full and loaded the power drive setting is helpful for getting up to speed. If you are trying to be mpg conscious than the eco setting is the best fit.

EV mode is not only quiet and efficient but it is surprisingly powerful, actually very powerful. When I need to drive further than the 25 to 30 mile EV range (depending on temperature) it automatically switches to HV mode which is a standard hybrid. I'm must less fond of that driving experience than I am in EV mode. So much so that my next car will certainly be all electric.

Cost effective hybrid vehicle.
Great fuel mileage, I hardly ever have to fill up, smooth ride, great acceleration for a hybrid. The only thing that I do not currently like is the back end does not dry completely when I go thru the car wash, making it difficult for the backup camera to be clear.

Safe/Reliable/Low Cost/Fun
I have had no problems with this vehicle, it handles well and I love it. I drive 200+ miles a day and average 59.3 MPG. My fuel costs are $96/ month on average. It has so much information about the car performance at the touch of a button. It is a safe vehicle and so fun to drive

The Prius rocks your socks off!
I love everything about it, from 50mpg to the heated seats it's absolutely amazing and if I had the money I'd buy more than one. The windows are tinted just right. Lots of storage room and super safe. Maintenance is kind of expensive though but that's the only real downfall to the car. Well that and it's white.

Multiple blind spots, visibility problems.
Love the high gas mileage. Downside is the visibility, definitely below normal.

Toyota Prius--the best car I ever owned.
We get terrific gas mileage and the car is very reliable. It drives smooth and is not affected by weather. It has a cute gauge that shows how many mpg we are getting at any point in time. It has a built in GPS that always works. It has a camera that shows (red, orange or green same as traffic light) how close you are to the object behind you.

Highly recommend as a family car.
Love our Prius. It has enough space for my family and all of our gear when we travel and go camping in the summer. Good legroom and adjustable seats. Great gas mileage, low maintenance. Does not have fantastic pickup, but it is not a huge problem for us. Would highly recommend.

Safe, ecological and efficient Prius prime.
Our Prius prime is very comfortable and extremely reliable. Fun and very safe to drive. Overall for our 28,000 miles, we have been getting 163 mpg. We seldom drive the freeway or more than 50 miles in a day. As a hybrid vehicle we get 65 mpg with freeway driving. Two concerns, only four passengers and a flat tire can be problematic without a spare.

Great car love the mileage.
I love my Prius she has allowed me to travel to work at a low cost. I love the gas mileage I get. I do wish it had more features like GPS system, garage opener, pre-start function. I do feel like the paint chips very easily. Buy Toyota provided great care options that allowed maintenance of the car to be very easy.

The highlight is the GPS.
The car runs smoothly, it gets me from point A to point B. Although I have more members of my family than I do seats in the car, it does the general job of getting me around town. I also enjoy the simple interior design.

Hybrids are the most gas efficient! Love it!
Overall, the vehicle is extremely comfortable and easy to drive. Extremely gas efficient as it is an hybrid vehicle, usually pay $20 for a full tank plus I can charge it overnight. Save a lot on gas money. Smooth drives, quiet engine, overall extremely happy with vehicle.

Love the gas mileage. Road noise could be damped a little better, but it's not unbearable.
Gets about 53 MPG around town, and 49 to 50 on the interstate.

Over 50 mpg with lots of safety
No complaints. Great mileage, drives smoothly, great brakes. Good acceleration when I need it

The fuel efficiency is better than you'd imagine. I routinely get 63 mpg!
I like the fuel efficiency and technical updates. I dislike that it doesn't have much storage space and it's a bit pricey for what it is.
