2008 Toyota RAV4 Review: A Good Year For The Dependable Comfortable SUV

Alex Showalter
May 13, 2022

The 2008 RAV4 lasts around 250,000 miles with only some oil and muffler issues. At $7,306 – 11,605, it’s expensive, but is worth it for one of the best compact SUVs available.

More powerful than other compact SUVs, the second row easily fits adults and the steering is responsive.
dislikeFilled The Bad
A lot of plastic interior trim, no navigation system available and the driver’s seat is tight.

Is the 2008 Toyota RAV4 a Good Used SUV?

  • Yes, 2008 is a good year. Owner reviews praise the peppy engines, room for children, and powerful V6 engine.

  • Fuel economy is good at up to 24 MPG combined.

Very nice looking car and great to drive
Nice car and easy to drive. Great gas mileage. Low cost in maintenance. Will buy a new one in a couple of years.

Make sure to upkeep the cars maintenance and it will be in great condition.
I love my car! It's very reliable and the local Toyota dealers/repair shop is extremely helpful! Haven't had problems other then the wear and tear of the vehicle. Overall I've been loving the experience with this almost 11 year old car!

I like Toyotas, I find them to be workhorses and you can drive them for years.
Reliable, dependable transportation. 4 doors make it easy 'to get in and out. Roomy, good storage, not a gas guzzler. Quiet motor, not too many dials. I do wish it had a backup camera. I suppose newer models the camera comes on the standard model.
accountCircle Mary E
I've never had any mechanical or other issues with this car. Since it's a V6, the performance is great — power and speed over tough mountain passes, and zippy handling in traffic. Even after 10 years, the styling of the RAV4 holds up great and still looks new. I especially like the size and cargo capacity, plus the back swing open door (instead of a hatch) which is easy to open and makes loading and unloading a snap.
This has been an almost maintenance-free vehicle with no repair bills or part failures even after 90K miles.
accountCircle Linda H
A great family car, great on gas, roomy, convenient to drive.
I love the size. I love the power entering the highway. I love the 4 wheel drive. I love the AC and the sunroof. I love the generous amount of cupholders and the fold down rear seats.

Toyota Rav4, the car that won't give up.
The performance and reliability of the 2008 Rav4 is superb. A vehicle I have owned for 10 years with no problems at all. A low maintenance car that with the dependability it has given thus far, I would repurchase.
accountCircle Diane o
It is affordable, has great features, and will last a long time .
I like the features of the seat that can be adjusted. I like that you can adjust the temperature on both sides of the vehicle. It is a great size to fit our family.
accountCircle Randy R
Toyota cars are the most durable.
Very dependable no other car can compete with this feature. I love the way it handles on the road. Great features and built tough. Great control for an older model and the parts hold up well. It handles well on the road. Needs side airbags. The engine is the best!

Good until its not
Recalled pistons and rings at 120k Kmc. Then everything fell apart. At 137km it’s junk and the engine failed. Toyota walked away from it and would not help out with anything but charged 300 to tell us its not worth fixing. 2 years ago I felt way different about toyota but now they are on my not great list.
accountCircle Madison B
Toyota RAV4-sleek with a good engine but has tire problems.
I love the look of the RAV4 and the engine has been extremely reliable but we have had many issues with the car specifically with the tire arms rods and shocks which is causing the vehicle to shake. Although that would be in part since we bought the car in Minnesota where they salt the roads which leads to rust and deterioration.
accountCircle Cindy H
It drives pretty well and it's easy to maneuver.
Like - four wheel drive for the snow and has a lot of space. Pretty good with gas. Dislike- its basic. . Not much for show.
accountCircle Laura E
It is safe to drive, rides good.
It is getting old so it is noisy when it runs. I like the size. The sensors on the tires keep needing to be replaced.

The trunk of the car has a secret compartment on the bottom that you can lift up and put more luggage or groceries in!
The car works great except for the brakes but just the rav4 has brake problems. It's very good on gas mileage and it's a very convenient car to have!

The option of the third row seating.
Not enough leg room in the front. Plenty of room in the back. A lot of storage room in the trunk space.
accountCircle Jill N
Safe and solid SUV that has a great engine.
Good engine but the car has issues with oil. I have to put oil into it every 500-1000 miles. Had the car three years and no issues with the engine. Only needed routine maintenance. I like that it is heavy duty and safe. I have not been in an accident but would know I was safe if I were as it had heavy doors. Lots of space and safe to drive in the snow.
accountCircle Susan O
It is well made, I have had no trouble with it.
Like the gas mileage, comfort and dependability. Dislike the blind spots and limited view from rear windows and also the fact that there is no air conditioning for the passengers in the back.

What Do Critics Say About the RAV4?

  • Consumer Reports finds the RAV4 to be a very smooth and refined compact SUV with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the RAV4 a 4.5/5, liking the good handling, but says the side-hinged rear door is difficult to use.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the RAV4 4.4/5 and enjoy the good ride quality, but dislike the low suspension.

What Common Problems Does the 2008 Toyota RAV4 Have?

Problems found on the 2008 RAV4 are relatively minor including excessive oil consumption, rusted mufflers, and weak brakes.

Excessive oil consumption is the most common complaint from owners at roughly 140,000 miles. Toyota engines are known to consume more oil than other vehicles as part of their design, and many owners simply top off the oil regularly.

Rustled mufflers are another frequent issue showing up at around 80,000 miles. Replacing the muffler is the only solution, costing about $600.

Weak brakes are something also mentioned by owners in the first 50,000 miles. Usually weak brake force is usually caused by worn pads, rotors, or low brake fluid. Replacing pads is about $200, rotors are $400, and a brake fluid flush is around $150.

There are 14 recalls, with the most serious one being for the rear tie rods in the suspension, which increase the risk of an accident if they fail.

How Long Will the 2008 Toyota RAV4 Last?

A properly maintained 2008 RAV4 will last around 250,000 miles, similar to other compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V. Regular annual maintenance costs are average for the SUV’s age and size at $409 per year, according to Repair Pal.

Most 2008 RAV4s will have over 100,000 miles so prospective buyers should be prepared to replace oxygen sensors for $350, control arms costing $450, and the camshaft position sensor, which is $200.

accountCircle Sam S

It is very reliable. It is a safe car with very few internal problems and rarely needs work done on it. The upkeep on the car is not challenging, and keeping it up to date keeps it reliable.

accountCircle Julie P

The Toyota rav4 is very reliable. I have had no problems with it. We've taken it on many trips and it has always performed beautifully.

accountCircle ashley p

The vehicle is reliable, however, it does have a fairly small gas tank for an SUV so travelling far you need to fill it up quite often.

accountCircle Katherine O

Yes it is very reliable, but it is more expensive to fix and replace parts than many other Toyota models.

accountCircle Chris C

Yes it is reliable. The main problems have just been wear and tear on the aging vehicle. Hubcaps need to be retired on wheels though. Alignment issues have caused tires to wear down too fast.

accountCircle Itzel T

The Toyota rav4 is very reliable it takes me to school and work without wasting a lot of gas. It has not given me any problems whatsoever. I have traveled more than 300 miles and it never gave me a problem getting to my destination.

accountCircle Ryan P

This particular year does tend to use a bit more oil than other cars. Oil changes need to be made 50-100 miles before the sticker tells you to. It is also helpful to keep a container of oil in the trunk just in case. Otherwise the car is extremely reliable.

accountCircle Lindsay W

It is very reliable! Although, I have gone through about 4-5 batteries since owning it in 2012 but I think that is normal maintenance.

How Much Is the 2008 Toyota RAV4 Worth?

Blue book values range from $7,306 – 11,605, making the RAV4 about $3,000 more expensive than a Ford Escape or Jeep Liberty. When new, the price range was $21,500 to $27,070. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 6% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the RAV4?

There are three models of the RAV4 available. Technology was last updated in 2006 with a new infotainment system added for the 2009 model year.

Base is the entry-level model with:

  • 16-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Keyless Entry
  • Cruise Control
  • 6-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX Jack

Sport is a step up adding features such as:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Sport Suspension
  • Fog Lights
  • Black Exterior Trim

Limited is the luxury model and features:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Leather Seating
  • Dual-Zone Climate Control
  • Power Driver’s Seat
  • Premium 9-Speaker Stereo System With Bluetooth

What Engines Come In the RAV4?

  • The base engine is a fairly weak 2.4L 4-cylinder with only 166 horsepower, which gets up to 24 MPG combined.
  • An available upgrade is the very powerful 3.5L V6 making 269 horsepower and getting up to 22 MPG combined.

What Colors Does the RAV4 Come In?

How Big Is the RAV4?

The 2008 RAV4 is an average sized compact SUV similar to the Nissan Rogue and Hyundai Tucson. It’s one of the only compact SUVs to offer an optional third row. Passenger room is good in the first two rows, but the third row only fits small children.

Cargo space is very good compared to other small SUVs offering 36.4 cubic feet of room behind the second row, and up to 73 with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the RAV4 Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota 4Runner is a popular rival costing about $3,000 more. Passenger room and off road performance are both better in the 4Runner, but the RAV4 is more efficient. We recommend the RAV4 since it’s cheaper, but if you need the extra space the 4Runner is a very reliable choice.

The Honda CR-V is another competitor that costs about $1,000 less. Technology is more up-to-date in the CR-V, but the RAV4 is more powerful with the V6 engine. We recommend the RAV4 since they last a little longer, but both are great compact SUVs.

Do Owners Recommend the Toyota RAV4?

accountCircle Sam S

Yes. It is a reliable vehicle with very few problems. It has been reliable for my family and I for many years. It gets great gas mileage and is not expensive to maintain.

accountCircle Julie P

Yes, the Toyota rav4 is a great car. It is small enough to fit anywhere I need to go, but the trunk still has plenty of room. It is fun to drive and very reliable.

accountCircle ashley p

Yes, it is efficient for hauling larger loads or for transporting children. There is room to put the seats down to make a larger trunk as well with handles from the trunk so you do not have to walk to each side of the car to put the seat down.

accountCircle Katherine O

Yes, it is a great vehicle, although there are a few features that could use some improvement such as the literal bells and ding noises.

accountCircle Chris C

Yes, it has its issues but a reliable 4wd vehicle. I would change the wheels to rims instead of having hubcaps though. Airing up tires can be complicated and painful. It has had minimal upkeep within 200,000 miles. Maintenance is relatively inexpensive.

accountCircle Itzel T

Yes, I have had this car for about 3-4 years and I have had no problems with it. I use this car everyday to go to school and work.

accountCircle Ryan P

Yes! It is very durable and comfortable. It has a lot of high end features and it is a very attractive car. I like that I have plenty of space in the trunk as well as in the seats. This car is an excellent road-trip car for small families or teenagers.

Yes! It has a ton of cargo space. The back seats slide forward and back for additional room. It is also very easy to handle on the road.

My RAV4 is a 6 cylinder it goes from 0 to 60 so fast I like that.
I have had my RAV4 for 10 years I love it in that time the things I have had to replace is the water pump, and of course tires, brakes, spare tire rim it rusted out I never had to use it thank goodness. I do have a problem with the headlights plastic covers have cracked and fogged up. Been way too many recalls have not liked that it takes time out of my schedule to have to bring it to the dealer to get it checked and having to wait. Other then all that I can say it has been a very reliable vehicle first time owning a Toyota.

I bought this car obviously used back in 2011. I love the car as it drives pretty smooth and the main reason why I love this car is because of its reliability and safety. I have two of my own kids and it's a safe car. The only downfall I seem to have come across is the oil. It burns faster than most cars and so I'm having to replenish the oil often.

The engine is not sluggish at all. It It took me awhile to get used to starting from a standstill (it surges), but the engine purrs once it gets going.
We bought it from a car rental company. It only had one cosmetic defect. I wish the gear shift lit up, because I am short and can't see the gear shift on my dashboard. Also, I would rather have the tailgate lift up, rather than pull open like a door. Otherwise we like the car very much.

Great gas mileage for an SUV.
Pros: a lot of space running myself and my busy kids to activities and events. Holds a lot in the back. Cons: wish it was just a tad bigger that a 3rd person could sit in the back if needed. With the 2 car seats, it is impossible for another person to sit.

The rear mounted tire makes the trunk door hard and heavy to shut so I am glad they moved the spare tire back to under the trunk. It handles like a car- but has the storage of an SUV- which I love. Very affordable and good, safe, first cars. Very dependable Toyota.
Overall it is a very nice and well built car. Or crossover I should say. Although there is quite a bit of trunk space, I find that the overall space seems cramped. Car feels a little bit outdated. But overall considering how cheap they are I cannot complain. AWD works great, and it comes with an electronic diff lock. Which is a bonus for me. 2. 4l i4 engine does feel a little underpowered for a vehicle of this size and weight. A 3. 0 v6 would be a lot more fitting.

The 2009 Toyota RAV4 will become your new best friend
The 2008 Toyota RAV4 was my wisest vehicle purchase to date. With minimal care and only a few minor typical bumps along the way, my RAV4 has been my best buddy for over 10 years now. It's a smooth ride, but not too smooth as to make you car sick, it's a pretty quiet ride. I had to have the brakes done within the 1st two years of buying the RAV brand new, and this could be because of the salt air (I live by the beach), or it could be subpar craftsmanship, who knows-- this was the only thing I've had to do to keep the car running pristinely besides routine maintenance. It's spacious as heck, and the 3rd row seating is virtually non-existent so don't depend on that as a real seat (I don't know what they were thinking w this addition??). The upholstery is enduring of lots of coffee and snacks being spilled on it, wipes clean no problems. Accelerates as well as expected, gas is around 19-22 mpg depending on driving conditions. I highly recommend the 2008 Toyota RAV4.

He is a member of the Automotive Press Association, and keeps up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry. Over the years, he has driven hundreds of cars, working on many of them. His mechanical experience evolved from modifying off-road trucks as a teen to focusing on automotive electrical systems as he got older. He now specializes in reviewing used cars as an automotive journalist. Some of his favorite brands are Toyota and BMW. The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of his favorite vehicles of all time since they’re built to last forever and can go anywhere. One of his current cars is a Lexus LX570, built on the same platform as the 200-series Land Cruiser, but it’s a better value in the used market.
