2010 Toyota RAV4 Review: A Very Dependable Year For The Popular Compact SUV

Alex Showalter
Jun 24, 2022

The 2010 RAV4 lasts over 300,000 miles with only some paint and computer issues. At $10,958 to $14,038, it’s expensive, but worth the money for a great small SUV.

dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is firm, the third row has limited legroom and the interior materials are cheap feeling.

Dependable and safe while all the while looking good
This vehicle replaced one of the same totaled in a t bone accident. I was fine so i felt safe

Spacious! Compartment underneath the trunk liner where to fit smaller things.
I am very satisfied about this car. I love it that it is so spacious, the fact that the back seats can be folded completely creates extra space. I have moved twice and was able to fit most of my belongings in the car. Very comfortable to drive, and keeping all the regular maintenance up to date, really never gave me any mechanical problems. I would say that the downsides are that is not so fuel efficient; and in my case it did not come equipped with Bluetooth sound system, so I have to rely on auxiliary cords.

It's reliable and the car is easily driven. I've never had any issues with the car at all.
I really love my car because it's reliable and the maintenance is low cost. The only part that I do not like is that it didn't come with a third row standard. Now that we have 3 kids and two of them are in car seats, the back row doesn't fit all the children.

The rav4 is a great car for great people.
My car drives very well and is very reliable. It handles well in bad weather and snow. I just had a problem when the transmission broke and it was an expensive fix. The car is very comfortable and I feel safe driving it. I live that it is roomy and I am able to transport large items, whereas in a sedan I would not be able to.

I love the look of the car, and its performance on snowy roads.
I love my Toyota rav4. I bought it used, and I have had no problems at all. We keep up with the regular maintenance schedule, and everything has been fine. I am a super chicken winter driver, and this car is great in the snow.

It is extremely dependable and give a comfortable ride.
I love that it is a mini-SUV. It also has 4 wheel drive. It is highly dependable. It maintains controls at high spend even when another car tries to move in your lane.

It's dependable and is pretty low maintenance.
It has been a dependable car. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an SUV.

2010 Toyota RAV4 - I wouldn't trade it in unless I am getting a newer RAV4!
I love my RAV4. It sits up high like an SUV but does not guzzle gas like the larger one! It is the perfect size for me and my kids and pets! Plus I love the look ?. I haven't had any problems with the car at all, only a couple minor recalls which Toyota takes care of for free. I highly recommend this car, and I will probably just upgrade to a newer version when I am ready for a new car.

Major repairs needed and very expensive!!
It is alternator went out and as soon as that was replaced the transmission stopped working. The parts are not very popular so it is very expensive to repair. Since these items are rare to find the shop wants $3,800 for the repairs. Seems like when the car reaches its 177k mile it started needing repairs every week.

It also rusts, horrible paint job by manufacturer
I don't like because the paint is bubbling up and peeling off and manufacture doesn't care

Average but could be better
It runs well and gets pretty good gas mileage. I wish there were vents for the back seat, they are only in the front.
accountCircle Laura C
Pretty nice car, but could be better.
Compared to the height of the car, the seats feel pushed back and sort of low. Reliable and easy to drive. Good size; not too big or too small. Nowhere to rest your arm on the side while you are driving. Seats are easy to flip up and down. Audio quality could be better, but it is okay.

Reliable vehicle, but the style and options are lacking
The vehicle has been very reliable. It is a bit boring style and option wise, but has never left us stranded.

Size, mileage, and easy to maintain.
I like the size but no trailer hitch and I wish it was higher of the ground. Runs great, easy to maintain.
accountCircle Alan A
Sturdy, stable and high resale value
Toyotas make reliable vehicles which have a high resale value but they are very boring in design. If you are going for style skip this brand.
accountCircle Nicole S
That it is safe and easy to handle.
I like that it is an SUV, but the problem is that it uses a lot of gas and the paint is peeling.

What Do Critics Say About the RAV4?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2010 RAV4 is a great well-rounded package, with above average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the RAV4 a 4.3/5 liking the balanced ride and handling, but disliking the side-opening tailgate.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the RAV4 4.4/5 and enjoy the car-like driving experience, but dislike the poor off-road performance.

What Common Problems Does the 2010 Toyota RAV4 Have?

The most common complaints on the 2010 RAV4 include paint issues, unintended acceleration, and all-wheel-drive system lights.

Paint bubbling and peeling is the most common complaint from owners at around 80,000 miles. When the paint is not cared for, it starts to fail, and costs about $1,000 per panel to repaint.

Unintended acceleration is another issue reported by owners in the first 50,000 miles. There’s a software update available from Toyota which solves the problem and can be installed for free by a dealership.

Warning lights from the all-wheel drive system are mentioned in the first 1,000 miles. The most common source of the problem is a traction control sensor, which costs about $100 to replace.

There are 14 recalls, with the most serious ones being for rear suspension components rusting, which can increase the risk of an accident.

How Long Will the 2010 Toyota RAV4 Last?

A properly cared for 2010 RAV4 should be able to last over 300,000 miles, which is twice as long as competitors like the Chevy Equinox. The average annual maintenance costs are similar to other compact SUVs, according to Repair Pal, at $419 per year.

accountCircle Chery M

It is very reliable, besides the normal wear and tear and general maintenance. No major mechanical problems, occasional recall fixtures.

accountCircle Candice M

It is an incredibly reliable vehicle, as well as most other Toyotas. My car is extremely reliable and I take great care of it to keep it running smoothly.

accountCircle Casey V

Extremely reliable! I have driven through snow storms and have had to travel for business with it. Lots of space and very sturdy!

accountCircle Jenna S

I believe it is a very reliable car. The only problems I have had with mine so far is some wiring to small lights in my dashboard, but it has not affected the way the car functions at all.

accountCircle Shawna F

I have not encountered any issues so far. I absolutely love my car. I would definitely recommend this car to people with children. It is roomy without being too big and just all around an awesome car.

accountCircle Debra S

Not so far. I have just owned it for a week. Everything seems to be in exceptionally good order. It is very reliable.

accountCircle David B

No, I have never experienced any issues with my vehicle. I would prefer the gas mileage to be a bit better.

accountCircle Kathleen M

The only problem that I currently have with it is that the battery in my key fob stopped working. So now I have to unlock it with the key and to start it I have to put the fob up to the push button start to get the car to start.

How Much Is the 2010 Toyota RAV4 Worth?

Blue book values range from $10,958 to $14,038, making the RAV4 about $3,000 more than a Ford Escape or Jeep Liberty. When new, the price range was $21,675 to $27,985. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the RAV4?

There are three models of the RAV4 available. The technology was just updated in 2009, with a complete redesign coming for the 2013 model year.

Base is the entry-level model with:

  • 16-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Limited Slip Differential
  • Keyless Entry
  • Cruise Control
  • 6-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX

Sport is a step up, adding:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Color-Keyed Bumpers
  • Sport Suspension
  • Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel

Limited is the luxury model and has:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Leather Seating
  • Dual-Zone Climate Control
  • Automatic Headlights
  • Upgraded 9 Speaker JBL Stereo With Bluetooth

What Engines Come In the RAV4?

  • The base engine is an average 5L-4-cylinder which makes 179 horsepower and gets up to 24 MPG combined.
  • An available upgrade is the powerful 3.5L V6, which offers 269 horsepower and gets up to 22 MPG combined. Performance is great, taking only 6.9 seconds to go 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the RAV4 Come In?

How Big Is the RAV4?

The 2010 Toyota RAV4 is an average compact SUV, similar in size to rivals including the Nissan Rogue and Subaru Forester. Passenger room is very good in the first and second rows. It’s one of the only compact SUVs with an optional third row, but legroom is cramped there.

Cargo space is similar to rivals, with 36.4 cubic feet of room behind the second row, and 73 cubic feet with the backseats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the RAV4 Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Highlander is another rival from Toyota costing about $1,500 more. Passenger room and interior materials are nicer in the Highlander, but the RAV4 is easier to park in a small city. We recommend the Highlander since you get more room for only slightly more money.

The Honda CR-V is another compact SUV which is about $1,000 less. The infotainment system and interior materials are nicer in the CR-V, but the RAV4 has a more powerful engine available. We recommend the RAV4, but you can’t really go wrong with either since they’re great SUVs.

Comfortable and problem-free.
My Toyota rav is very comfortable, easy to drive (very maneuverable), gets decent gas mileage (about 25 mpg) and is quite problem-free. The back cargo area is spacious, and you can put the middle seats down to make more cargo space if you need it. I like the front dashboard controls; they are easy to use and not confusing as some can be. All in all, it is my favorite car I have ever owned.

A really good car to own!
I really like this car, although it is a bit small, it can hold a lot in it. The chairs are super comfortable too, I have taken quite a few naps in there, but it also retains a lot of stains, so that kind of stinks. Like I said before, it is a bit small, it can fit 5 people, but the middle seat in the back is a tight squeeze.
accountCircle Abby S on June 23, 2021
I can drive it eco or as a sport type of car.
The car itself is high tech. There’s a touch screen. The car has nice and comfortable seats. There’s enough room for 5 people. Lots of leg room. I personally love the eco and the sport option. Overall, great car. The speakers provide great sound quality. I love it.

Long lasting, family SUV!
Overall, I love my rav4. I bought it used at 166k miles, so it needed a little loving (brakes, new wipers, oil change, etc.) But otherwise it runs well. There’s a grinding noise sometimes around 40-50 mph but I have researched it a lot and seems fairly common in this year/make/model. I think it’ll last forever!
accountCircle Mayra B on May 28, 2021
The car is fast lots of space.
Waste a little bit of gas. The car looks small but has a lots of space that can fit anything and everything it has more storage in the truck if you lift it up. Runs fast good for trips to vacations. I have taken it the mud and gotten out I thought I was going to get stuck.

Basic, suits my needs good gas mileage for a smaller SUV, 4 wheel drive.
2010 had to replace the transmission already at 100,000 miles the alternator just was replaced along with two full brake jobs all four rotors since I have owned it ( 2017) I like the cargo space being outdoorsy I can transport both my bike and kayak at the same time and still have room for other equipment. Cost to repair is fairly cheap and readily available compared to luxury vehicles.

Rav4 a good car that fills needs.
Great car. But occasionally has strange rattles. No rear ac. Wonderful cargo space. High rev sounds occasionally. Because of the 4 cylinder. Comfortable seats. Seat warmers. Aux port in good place. Roomy glove compartment. Good floor mats. Carpet hard to clean in back.

2010 Toyota rav4 comparison and review.
This vehicle is reliable however it is dated and does not include the amenities the newer model have such as touch screen, Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as keyless entry. I would recommend to any consumer to consider the newer model and if these amenities are not significant enough to make you want to buy the newer model and all you require is a vehicle to move from point a to b then the 2010 model will suit you fine. If you are budget permits however it only makes sense to treat yourself with the finer things.

The tomato rav4 is super easy to drive, has great pick up and control, and is actually quite fun. The interior of the Toyota rav4 is comfortable and spacious. All of the controls are easily accessible and extremely user friendly. I highly recommend a Toyota rav4.

The limited rav4 has great additional features.
Really great vehicle, runs and drives great. I like that it is a v6, has a lot of power. All the features are very updated. The limited model is great. The durability of the bumpers is a downfall since they are made of plastic. All the plastic breaks very easy with little force. A small bump causes cracks and dents easily.

2010 Toyota rav4 feature reviews.
I am really in love with the sunroof. I also feel very comfortable being higher up from the ground than in a car. The open trunk makes the SUV feel more open and spacious. There are a few features I wish the car had though, like backup camera but it does have a 5 disc CD changer.
accountCircle Freida P on April 23, 2021
Great mileage, smooth ride, excellent space.
Lots of room holds 5 people comfortably, large trunk area, including top cargo rack, large glove compartment, great mileage. Smooth ride for a medium size vehicle with a large feel. Vehicle has a roll over warning, love the four wheel drive feature and non skid feature.
accountCircle Nate G on April 20, 2021
Good car for summer adventures, could be better in snow.
Great car! Handles on dirt roads well and has great clearance. Gas mileage is ok but average for SUV that old. It could be better in the snow, it is a little light and struggles with traction in deeper snow, probably would have worse gas mileage if it was heavier though.

I really like my rav4. It is my family car. My daughters car seat fits perfectly in the middle section of the back seat. It has been a very reliable car! It is also very comfortable to ride in. The back seat reclines very comfortably. I also love the trunk! It has so much space to store whatever you want!

This is one of the best cars on the market, would def get a newer model.
I love how compact it is, perfect for a small family but when you have three children it is tight! Also gas is great, seats are comfortable. It is great that the backseat can be let down. We have made long trips in this car with three children as well as traveled with a two MX bikes in the back. It is really universal.

I love all the little details.
We absolutely love it! It is got heated seats, a backup camera, aux cord input, and even a regular outlet on the back of the center console! It really comes in handy when I forget the car charger. The spare tire on the back is nice because it is full sized and not one of the donuts that are not supposed to be used for very long.

I love my RAV4. It is super reliable and so comfortable. I really like the way it rides'almost like a truck. I'm short and I can see easily over the dash. Whenever I return to driving it after a time period of not driving it, I always feel so good when I go to sit in it again'it's that good.
accountCircle David D on April 1, 2021
It's very versatile. Good in any kind of on-road weather conditions. Good in most off-road conditions as well, with locking 4WD for below 15 MPH.
This has been a great vehicle for me. It has been very reliable, needing only typical maintenance type repairs and service. After 6 trips across the U.S., I can say that it is quite comfortable for long trips, and its features like full-time 60/40 all-wheel drive and a beefy engine can meet inclemente conditions. My only critique is that the brakes should be heavier duty. It tends to eat brake pads.
accountCircle Kenna D on April 1, 2021
My long term SUV. Being a 2010 year, it has served us well in reliability.
We have had no trouble with this vehicle. It is only been standard maintenance. The vehicle has 178,000 miles which proves its reliability. Being a base model, the comfort level is not that of a Cadillac, but its performance and reliability makes up for that.
accountCircle Robert S on April 1, 2021
Dependable and economical.
My rav4 is dependable. The 4 cycle engine is peppy and seems to have that little surge of power when needed. Most of my driving is rural, so the gas mileage is not too bad a7 24.8 mpg. There is plenty of room for four adults and a third seat is optional. It is not a bad ride, but is noisy. The suspension telegraphs a rough road and the road noise can be a bit irritating. The cargo capacity without the third seat is good. It will tow a small trailer with no difficulty. Overall, I am pleased with my rav4. It is certainly not a luxury ride, but is dependable and has adequate cargo capacity for my purposes.

Overall it's a great, reliable, comfortable vehicle with plenty of space for everyone and everything!

Toyota rav4 is a great ride!
The rav4 that I have is a 2010 so it is a little older but it still is an amazing vehicle! Toyota’s just run forever so they will always be my favorite. The ride is good and everything still functions very well. The only thing that has popped up is my radio likes to act funny when it gets really cold out. When I turn the volume up it wants to go down or when I change the station it just turns off. But I am sure this is an easy fix I just have to put the effort into it.

Beware of the Toyota rav4.
My Toyota rav4 has not been the best vehicle. I had a corolla that I loved but I wrecked it. Since Toyota is suppose to be very good vehicles I decided to stay with them. Well, the radio had to be replaced. It would cut off when you changed the station. Sometimes the CD player works and sometimes it doesn't. It's been about 4 years since it's been replaced and it's doing the same thing again. I think it's some sort of electrical problem. It's had several recalls on it. Down to the rear suspension. Some part in the motor quit working. It is also rusting really bad. I've never had a vehicle do that. The paint on the hood and the front has bubbled and peeled and now its rusting. I am very disappointed with this vehicle.

Great that you can switch into 4 wheel drive. The visibility over the hood isn't the best, has led me to bump against a wall or two. There is a big blind spot over my left shoulder. I love my rav4! The interior is very comfortable and there is so much room. The back seats fully go down, opening up the back of the car and making it easy to fit long items (such as a Christmas tree or drawers). I along w my parents and two brothers fit just perfectly when going for road trips or a simple ride to the grocery store. The rav4 have always been my favorite and I love it is silver color.

The reliable rav4 with the extra wheel on the back!
I have had a few problems with the ac and other repairs that needed to be done. Other than that, the car has worked well for 10 years. I believe that it is reliable and very good for lots of driving. It has 5 seats and a nice truck size. I really like the different compartments available throughout the car. The car is very comfortable and nice.

Dependable RAV4 for the family
Feels sturdy, supportive, like the 4-wheel drive aspect. SUV, but zippy! Great family car and it's built to last!

My rav is a great vehicle. It has good pickup. I really like the backup camera as it helps with safety backing up. I do not like the anti lock brakes however.
My rav is really reliable. I have not had any issues

That toyota's are reliable and go for ever as long as you take care of them.
I love love love my car, it rides smooth is safe and roomy. It has a good sound system but my biggest complaint is that the shape of it or something causes several rock chips and dings to hit my windshield. My old rav didn't do this.
