Class leading long-term reliability ratings, a spacious interior which fits 5 adults comfortably, and good standard technology including a rearview camera.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Interior materials are cheap with a lot of plastic trim pieces, the suspension is firmer than other compact SUVs, and visibility is limited with the sloping front windshield design.

2013 Toyota RAV4: Quick Overview

  • 2013 marks the first model year of the fourth generation of the RAV4 with all-new styling, engines, and interiors.
  • Reliability ratings are great according to J.D. Power, but there are more complaints than the 2012 model.
  • Only one engine is available, and is a 4-cylinder with average power for the class.
  • Fuel economy is good and is in 4th place out of 24 compact SUVs with a combined rating of up to 26 miles per gallon.
  • Safety scores are average, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government safety tests, and earning the Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  • The 2013 RAV4 ranks 3rd out of 24 compact SUVs, based on owner reviews. The RAV4 does everything a small SUV should, with plenty of room, good technology, and a long-lasting engine.

A decent car but nothing to write home about.
Had to replace the engine a few years back because it overheated and was leaking coolant- otherwise no issues over the last five years. I like the trunk space and the heating and cooling- the audio has issues- also there was a recall on the windshield wipers.

The Toyota RAV4 is good in all weathers and I had no trouble driving in the winter.
Toyota RAV4 is a very reliable vehicle that I can depend on.

Love my suv. Great car for anyone.
Great vehicle. Comfortable ride, has eco mode and sport mode. The eco mode helps save on gas usage. Sport mode gives it the extra giddy up. Great on gas. Back seats fold completely down for more storage room. Touch screen monitor for radio. Has bluetooth connection. Has a built in map for assistance with directions.

Toyota rav4. A very reliable SUV with a great stereo system.
It's very reliable, comfortable and has lots of features. Very roomy and drives very smooth. The gas mileage is great! I have had my Toyota rav4 for several years now and if I was to get another car id get another one. I really like Toyotas I think they are great cars!

That it is reliable and comfortable.
I love that it is roomy and easy on the gas. It rides smoothly and the sound system is great. It also has a sunroof that I love when I want to let my hair down and feel the wind.

The back seat doesn't have air vents. This isn't an issue for me because I never have people in my backseat but it could be an issue for other people.
I love my car, it's perfect for what I need. I like the features it has like heated seats, push to start, and the automatic open and close for the back hatch.

Raving for RAV4, this little SUV is great in all weather and conditions!
I love how fuel efficient it is. It is ride is really comfortable, and roomy for my guys who are all over 6ft tall. It handles beautifully in foul weather, we live where the tide comes high and have to drive through really wet roads. This car handles it without any hesitation.

It is grey with black rims and I have led lights inside.
It does not really go fast. It does not really help. It is a good car to have space wise. But for anything else it is just a waste of time. Cannot really speed in there. It very hard to manage and keep clean but that is for every car. The gas stays in there pretty well.

Do not buy it unless you are use to a loose driving suspension.
Too many blind spots, doesn'T feel stable on interstate when semi trucks pass me I feel like the vehicle has too much play and I do not feel safe. I told my husband i'M driving my casket.

Don’t buy >2005
No!!Paid 14.500 spent $10,000 for repairs in 2 years sold it for $11,000 with pleather seat covers winter and summer tires 2 sets of rims and weathertec cargo mat and aftermarket two way command start, Bluetooth and back up camera. I couldn’t get rid of it fast enough. Bought a 2001 Rav4 low mileage rebuilt for 2600, very happy now. Don’t buy a Rav4 past 2005 and stay away from V6 they all have a shutter and transmission problems. Toyota is aware but won’t own up

Best experience in an great designed economical SUV.
Toyota rav4 is reliable in most cases especially when it is still new. The thing that I am not very satisfied with the rav4 is the engine size. It is more feminine and not fit for men who love big engines like me. Also the comfort level is low. It is too tiny too. I fit in there just fine but you do not have much room to play with. The features are okay. It has Bluetooth connections, speakers sound great although not 'Bose' sounding, plug-ins are all there for your phone and the inside design is great at least for the 2013 model that I own.

I call this car my coffin on wheels.
Too many blind spots, too unstable on interstate I feel like when a semi passes me I am going to lose control of my rav and for that ready I stay off interstates no matter how far out of my way I have to drive, the back up camera is fuzzy and I still look every direction before trusting it.

At reliable but Needs more features
My car has had no problems and very Reliable. The ride is comfortable. I just want more features and leather seats. I do think the engine is loud and should have car charger ports in back seat as well as heat or air vents. The back seat is either cold or hot which is not good for my children

What Problems Does the 2013 Toyota RAV4 Have?

The Toyota RAV4 has less serious complaints than other compact SUVs, and is a great choice for shoppers. There are more problems with the 2013 model than the 2014, so upgrading for $1,000 may be worth it to some buyers.

Navigation system problems are the most common complaint owners have. The main issue is glare on the screen, making the system difficult to use on sunny days. Some owners have installed anti-glare screen protectors to help make the system more usable.

Paint problems are another frequent complaint. Usually when the paint does not cure properly at the factory there are weak spots, making it chip and peel in some areas. Repainting the affected panels solves the issue.

Transmission vibrations are also mentioned by owners. Flushing the transmission solves the problem, but in some cases replacing the torque converter is necessary to fix the issue, and can cost $1,500.

There is only 1 recall, which is better than other compact SUVs. The recall is for the trailer lights, and Toyota dealers will replace the module for free.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2013 Toyota RAV4 is more expensive than other compact SUVs, with a price range of $14,288 to $19,319, depending on the model and mileage. When new, the price range was $23,300 to $28,410. Depreciation is better than average, dropping about 30% in value over the first 5 years.

So far, the rav4 has been very reliable. I have had no problems with the vehicle in the 5+ years I have had it- over 100,000 miles now and I expect it will still be just as reliable for my daughter, who will be driving it next year once she has her driver's license.

accountCircle Jeanine B

I have had it three years and haven't had an issue with it other than routine maintenance tune up oil change tires wipers.

accountCircle Michelle A

It has basic maintenance. If taken care of it does not have any other major issues. The tires are a bit more expensive, but it is to be expected with this vehicle.

It is very reliable. I have only had to do routine maintenance for the most part. The only issue I did have was with the knobs for the air conditioner. I also wish the air conditioner had more power.

How Does the 2013 Toyota RAV4 Compare to Other SUVs?

The 2013 Toyota RAV4 ranks near the top of the compact SUV class, and is in 3rd place out of 24 vehicles based on owner reviews.

In first place is the more affordable MINI Countryman. Interior materials, and power on the higher-end versions are both better in the MINI. Where the Toyota stands out is with better practicality, and a more reliable powertrain. The MINI is a sportier SUV, but the RAV4 is a better daily driver.

A close competitor is the Honda CR-V, which has a lower starting price. The two SUVs are very closely matched with similar reliability ratings, power, and passenger room. Great solid car, performs well in all conditions and is very durable.
Tires always run out of air, that is really my only issue. Gas mileage could be a little better, but is overall pretty good especially in eco mode. Does not need repairs very often, could use better windshield wipers tho. I live in a place with a lot of snow so it could also use better heaters that clear the snow off faster in the morning.

Like new, with 100, 000 miles. Running like a champ!
I just purchased my rav4 limited from a family member. So far, it is a great car! It had almost 100, 000 miles on it, but it is proving to be a great car for the money. It comes with a sunroof, heated seats, leather, and lots of other features. It's also can be put in sports mode, to give it an extra power boost.

Smooth, comfortable family value.
Comfortable drive, smooth and roomy. Feels safe and is supportive of any length commute. Spacious interior. Great accessories as well. Easily and user-friendly. We are comfortable as a family of 3 driving around town and even comfortable in long trips. Although we do not drive more than 2 hrs-4 hrs we love the space and the comfortability of the car.

Comfortable and reliable!
I love my rav4. It is spacious, comfortable, and decent on gas. The comfortability part is most important to me because, in my family, we love long road trips. I have not experienced any mechanical issues with my car in the three years that I have owned it. I have also been very impressed with how it handles snow/ice as compared to my previous car (a saab).

Toyota rav4 is more than a car.
The rav4 is a very, valuable and reliable car. I have had it for 4 years now and it has great features. It comes with a lot of space with remarkable space in the back, it is low on gas with its 4-cylinder feature. It is an all wheel drive which means it is great for all the seasons. It also includes Bluetooth capabilities and a rear view dash cam when going in the reverse direction.

Runs good even with high mileage.
My car had 160,000 miles on it and it is still running smoothly. Plenty of room for me, my son, and all his toys, equipment. I am hoping to get over 200,000 miles from it. As long as you get consistent oil changes, the car will run nicely for a long time.

Rav4 is economical, good vehicle, will definitely get money's worth.
Overall reliable, did have a mechanical issue, Toyota extended warranty but did not notify owners, they replaced part only if the owner complained. Car has otherwise been reliable, good gas mileage, comfortable, handles well in bad weather. I have purchased many Toyotas and will continue to do so.

Perfect small SUV for the outdoors type family.
It has great clearance for most off-roads and plenty of room for camping gear and a toddler. The only downside is no rear ac vents and only a 4 cylinder so cannot tow anything, like a camper which is what we would love to get at some point. Otherwise I have never taken it to the shop other than regular maintenance.

Best car I have ever owned or drove. Great steering, breaks, and spacious.
My Toyota rav4 is the best car I have ever owned. First of all, I feel safe in it. Secondly, it is spacious inside. It seats 5, is comfortable to drive, plenty of legroom for driver and as a passenger. My 79-yr-old disabled grandma has the same make & model. She can get in and out easily and loves driving her rav4. Which is the case for me too. I love driving the rav4, the steering, brakes wonderful. Great stop time with breaks. I love my 'trunk', lots of storage space, the amount of ikea furniture or things I can haul if I fold down the back row seats is impressive. I love all of the features, I know they may vary with each vehicle. But my favorite is the rear view camera, it is great. We also live in an area with a ton of traffic, curvy freeways & highways always merging in a short tight distance, and in other area lots of hills. The rav4 drives great and gets me through all of that smoothly, and it is not noisy. My next car will also be a rav4.

Purple Toyota 2013 rav4!
I do not like the color, the stereo is out of date, chairs seems old, parts sometimes go out and die. Performance wise it is been running well but lately as it is 2013, either the lights or suspenses goes bad after driving for awhile. Would prefer to have a different car but only choice I had and was a past down.

I love my Rav4. I have not had many issues with it at all other than normal maintenance. It is a pleasure to drive and is very comfortable. The only issue that I have with performance is that I wish the air conditioning was more powerful. It does not blow out very well unless it is set at a high level. Other than that, I am very pleased with my purchase.

I actually have had a problem free experience. I have it serviced regularly. Buy tires when necessary and that is about it. This car will bring you everywhere with no trouble.
I have absolutely have had no issues with my rav4. The only issue that I have had was with the brake pads and that was just cause they hadn't been changed in a very long time. Car is very comfortable and is very roomy for being only a five seater. Does great it the snow and have made it home in a snowstorm perfectly. This car might not be for you if you have a big family and need to be able to fit a lot, but is perfect for a family that has 1 or 2 kids. This make also has sports mode and eco mode which is great to be able to have both options especially if you are trying to get on the highway you can just rest the button for sports mode. Car has plenty of cup holders and gives you the option in one of them to be able to take out an extra piece in the cup holder if you have a bigger cup or water bottle it will fit. I have also found that the way the windows are perfect because you are able to see out all of the windows clearly not giving you a lot of blind spots. The trunk in the rav4 is also very spacious and I you are able to put a lot in the back without worrying about running out of space. This car has been very reliable and I have not been worried about this car dying on me or not being able to get me to and fro.

We have a 2013 Toyota rav4. So far we have had no problems with it in the past couple years. We love the trunk. It is very spacious and fits everything we need without taking up so much room that there is no room in the backseat. It fits our child's car seat perfectly and there is enough room if we needed to add another one. The back seats recline back or fold all the way down so there is more space in the trunk. There is a back-up camera and very nice stereo system.

Love Toyota’s! Wouldn't buy anything else.
I love the performance and reliability! As a family, we love Toyota. I think Toyota is the best vehicle they make as far as value for what you pay for. We own a body shop and Toyota’s are the number one car for retaining value, the depreciation rate is so much slower. I have not had any problems with our Toyota’s! They will run forever! I love the comfort and drivability of my rav4. If I had anything to change it would be the gear shift, BC it does not take a lot of force or hitting a button to throw the car into neutral. And I wish there was just a couple more cup holders in the front. And the cup holders are square in the back, which is weird.

Very reliable vehicle with no motor problems at almost 200,000 miles. The only issue we have had is with the key fob which is not a direct problem with the car itself. Smooth ride but can be slightly loud depending on the highway. Seats are comfortable although I wish the rear seat cup holder was slightly deeper so the cups wouldn't fall out as easily.

The reliability has been great. Eve not had any major problems except the sunroof does not open. The cost of repair is $300-400 and we do not see the need to fix it. We do not use it. . The interior is comfortable for both short and long drives. We've done cross country and it was great. . Gas mileage has been good. We like the maintenance notification light and would like it to indicate more details about what is required. Totally unsatisfactory customer service
Had issues with a recall. They fixed but there fix messed up the alignment of the back tires. Had to replace of course. They were NOT willing to fix it right Dissatisfaction!

The Toyota RAV4 is good in all weathers and I had no trouble driving in the winter.
Toyota RAV4 is a very reliable vehicle that I can depend on.

Get legit a ride for your buck with the rav4.
I think that as a whole my car is of great quality for the price. My main issue would be the ac- it cools well but it is hard to control, sometimes switching to automatic instead of manual which I prefer. Seats are comfortable and is not a gas guzzler.

It is excellent in snow and is very reliable. It can fit a lot of luggage.
Great driving in snow. Decent on gas. Like the style .

Very reliable and comfortable vehicle to drive
The only issue Izvestia had with this vehicle is that the Torque converter started giving me issues at about 120,000 miles. Other than that it is a very uncomfortable and reliable vehicle and easy to drive. This is a bit small for a family of five when we all have to be in the vehicle at the same time

That it's a great little car
I love my little rav4. It's sporty, it's fun, and I like the way it looks. I do wish the seats were easier to clean, but otherwise it's great!

Very good condition. No complains at all, I love my car.
Nothing problem, great condition, low miles, all conditions good, 4 wheels drive, running light, ac, gas is awesome, but I like leather seat, it is not come with that. Sunroof. Back camera. 6 CDs. Bluetooth. Aux cord, folding side mirror, tires are new,

GPS is a problem but otherwise no complaints.
The GPS map is hard to see in sunlight. Difficult to update. Dash is easy to use. Comfortable driving.
