2013 Toyota Sienna Review: Ultra Dependable & Comfortable Used Minivan

Alex Showalter
Sep 16, 2022

The 2013 Toyota Sienna lasts over 300,000 miles with only some minor seat and electrical issues. At $15,596 to $20,344 it’s expensive, but worth it for the best minivan on the market.

likeFilled The Good
Excellent power from the V6 engine, optional all-wheel-drive system works well in the snow and the optional second row captain’s chairs are very comfortable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Some cheap plastic is used on the dash, the suspension is firm and the engine isn’t as efficient as some competitors.

Is the 2013 Toyota Sienna a Good Used Minivan?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2013 is a great year for the Toyota Sienna and it deserves a high overall rating since it’s such a long-lasting minivan. Owner reviews praise the passenger room, great engine, and available technology.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are very durable and made to hold up well to children, the seats are comfortable, and there’s a ton of cargo space available.
  • Reliability 10/10 – 2013 Sienna models don’t have any serious widespread problems. Avoid Sienna models from 20062007 which have some mechanical issues, and models from 20082020 are all very dependable.
  • Performance 7/10 – The standard V6 engine offers good power for a minivan, although it’s not very exciting to drive.
  • Safety 7/10 – The Sienna gets an overall rating of 4-stars in government crash tests, yet only gets a 3-star rating in the front passenger side test. Optional safety features include pre-collision warning and adaptive cruise control.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is average for a minivan at up to 21 MPG, which should get owners about 420 miles of range out of the 21 gallon gas tank. Fuel costs are $19 cheaper than average at $235 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2013 Toyota Sienna is more expensive than many other minivans, but they last much longer, making it an excellent value on the used market.

It is reliable and will last a very long time as long as you do basic maintenance on a regular schedule.
I like that it is a reliable vehicle, I know if we maintain it well it will last well past 100,000 miles. There is nothing in particular that I dislike about the vehicle, we have two vehicles of the same make and model.

Toyota sienna perfect for a large family.
Amazing car for a family. Love the seating arrangements and the room. Very reliable and safe. Good on trips. Bluetooth is a little tricky to figure out but other than that no complaints.

I love my 2013 AWD Toyota sienna.
I love my AWD van. It is comfortable, does well in the snow, has lots of room, and the interior is nice. It has a powerful engine and is just a very good, reliable vehicle. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a car with more room and one that is AWD.

The future of vehicles has arrived.
I've never had any mechanical problems with the vehicle. The comfort level is top notch. The front seats are heated and fully electric. The rear seats have plenty of room even for me and I am 6 feet tall. My kids have no issues maneuvering around the seats to sit in the very back. I love the electric sliding doors and the rear hatch. They make it super easy to load the kids and the groceries. The sound system could be a bit better as I like to really jam when by myself or with the kiddos. Other than that I love the van and it suits all of our immediate needs.

It drives great and is comfortable.
We have loved this vehicle. It has had some factory recalls but we were notified and the local dealer took care of them. This has been such a great car for our family of 6. It is easy to get in and out of, there’s room in the trunk/back for road trips and groceries. We would highly recommend this car.

Perfect mini going strong after 7 years!
It is 7 years old has more than 120k, and still rides like she is brand new. I never wanted a minivan, but this one has all the bells and whistles, love the two sunroofs, the wide screen TV, all of the perks! It is perfect for our family! It is an everyday driver, and most miles are highway! We travel to Disney world at least every 6 weeks and reliability is never a thought!

I love how easy it is to take out the middle row of seats.
Because of it having four wheel drive it does not have space for a spare tire. And I have gotten flat tires multiple time and had to spend hundreds of dollars to be towed just because I get a flat tire. It also goes through gas really quickly. And the sliding doors break very easily.
accountCircle Margaret B
I do not have any interesting details about the van.
I am disabled and I drive from my wheelchair. It is very hard to get into the drivers side and get locked in. I had to have the whole floor rewired because my chair does not fit easily in the drive place. I also do not like the cup holders. There is no heater in the van.

Gold 2013 Toyota sienna XLE.
Front end is too low and I have caused damage to my car pulling into parking spots. I have to tape up my car so it does not fall apart while I am driving. Gas mileage is great. Too many recalls and having to bring in to have serviced. Had to have the brakes replaced already. Expect much higher quality from Toyota.

Toyota minivan: good reliability, last on tech and user-friendly features.
It is dependable like almost all Toyotas, but unlike my older Honda, it is world's away from user friendly. And the tech skills are horrible. The car does not come standard with dual seat memory. In their top model! And since this is the family car, my husband is as likely to drive it as me so we are constantly having to adjust the seats without any memory. The Bluetooth connection also only allows for two phones. Ok. Only two main drivers. Simple? No. You have to manually select the correct phone each time you switch phones. But this cannot be done while the car is in motion, so it often is discovered middle of the road and then have to pull over or wait to switch to current phone. So many other drawbacks but those are the main ones. I do like the fact that the rear seats fold into the floor.

Fantastic family car you should own.
It is very stable on highway, comfortable with spacious seats. It is considered quite gas saving for 8 seaters car. I like the feature with Bluetooth. It is very reliable and easy to maintain when come to car service. It is good for family vacation with long hours drive.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Sienna?

  • Consumer Reports says the Sienna is a comfortable and smooth minivan with very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Sienna a 4.3/5 praising the excellent V6 engine, but doesn’t like the cheap plastic on the dash.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Sienna 4.4/5 and enjoy the optional all-wheel-drive in the snow, but owners don’t like the simple safety tech.

What Common Problems Does the 2013 Toyota Sienna Have?

The most common complaints found on the 2013 Toyota Sienna include rattling seats, a failure to start, and a broken rear window. Overall, these problems are less severe than in other minivans from 2013, and repair costs are average.

Rattling seats are the most widespread complaint from owners in the first 15,000 miles. The seat cushions have been known to rattle loose as the van drives down rough roads, and may need to be tightened. Fixing the seats costs under $50, depending on local labor rates.

A failure to start is reported by some owners at around 40,000 miles. Excessive battery drain is the most common source of the problem, and is caused by accessories left on when the vehicle is off. If the battery gets drained too many times, it will have to be replaced, costing about $200.

Broken rear windows are reported by some owners at around 15,000 miles. In colder climates the rear window may break when the defroster is turned on and the change in temperature causes the glass to shatter. Replacing the window costs about $500.

There are 6 recalls, all of which are not very severe for a 2013 minivan. The most serious recall is for the sliding door which may open while driving and Toyota will replace the control junction box for free to fix the problem. All of the other recalls are for air bags, which are a common recall across all vehicles.

How Long Will the 2013 Toyota Sienna Last?

A well cared for 2013 Toyota Sienna lasts around 300,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles more than competitors like the Chrysler Town & Country. Regular annual maintenance costs are average for a minivan at $544 per year, according to Repair Pal.

Since most 2013 Sienna models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace items including the blower motor for $380, the axle shaft costing $300, and the fuel door release actuator, which costs $400.

accountCircle Jody S

No problems - we have not had any mechanical problems in the time we have owned it. I would be comfortable driving it across the country.

accountCircle Esther S

Very reliable, as long as we keep up the maintenance. Our sienna does a few long trips per year (500 plus miles each way) and provides a good ride and ample space for luggage.

accountCircle Lauren D

The 2013 Toyota Sienna is very reliable, but from time to time repairs and maintenance have to be done, like any vehicle. There are no systemic problems, but tires wear out, wiper blades have to be changed, oil has to be changed... just like any vehicle.

accountCircle Sandy B

Yes. I have not had any problems. I've only had to do the typical upkeep of it like oil changes, tires, breaks etc.

accountCircle Sarah H

Yes, it’s very reliable because it has automatic door openers and if you let go of the wheel it will drive forward

accountCircle Barbara S

So far, it is incredibly reliable. We've only had it for about a year, and have had no issues. It drives reliably and the care has been easy.

accountCircle Kat B

It is reliable. The only issues I have had with the van are that the airbags were recalled and the sliding door was recalled. It was annoying to take it back to the dealer but it was ok.

accountCircle Courtney P

Yes. We have not had any problems with our Sienna. We continue to take it in for all of its scheduled maintenance to ensure that we get the most out of it.

How Is the Technology?

The entertainment technology in the 2013 Toyota Sienna is good for is age with an available navigation system and Entune smartphone app connectivity. There’s also a rear seat entertainment system with split screen monitor available. Safety technology is excellent as well for its age with optional pre-collision and adaptive cruise control systems.

Is the 2013 Toyota Sienna a Good Value?

Yes, the Sienna is a great value for a dependable minivan. Blue book prices range from $15,596 to $20,344, which makes it more expensive than other minivans including the Nissan Quest and Dodge Grand Caravan. When new, the price range was $26,585 to $41,475. Depreciation is similar to other minivans, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Toyota Sienna was launched in 2011, and replaced by the fourth generation in 2021.

2011: Launch of the third generation, completely redesigned with new features.

2012: Power passenger seat and automatic headlights added.

2013: 4-cylinder engine discontinued.

How Does the Toyota Sienna Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Sienna is the best minivan of 2013, offering a very comfortable cabin and dependable engines that outlast the competition.

The Honda Odyssey is a popular competitor costing around $1,500 less. Technology is a bit better in the Honda Odyssey in the entry-level models, however, the Toyota Sienna has better long-term reliability ratings. We recommend the Toyota Sienna since they last longer and have lower ownership costs.

The Chrysler Town & Country is another minivan which costs about $4,000 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Chrysler Town & Country, although the Toyota Sienna offers better handling and reliability. We recommend the Toyota Sienna since they have fewer serious mechanical issues and hold their value better.

Good car until its not!
I have not had any issues with this car, until about 3 years ago. I purchased the Sienna in 2015 w/ about 35,000 miles on it. The mileage on my car is now 127,800ish. The repeated issues that I am having with this car has to do with the front axle, wheel barrings, and the axle shaft boot on both sides. This issue has surfaced 3x's (and was fixed)-it's time to trade it in. I am disappointed, as I did not expect this, but I still love Toyota! Next up -the Highlander!

It's a great van if you have a large family. We take it in trips and use it as our family vehicle. I recommend getting the TV if you have kids. We did not and I regret it. No major problems, just routine maintenance done in it. I wish it had better gas mileage.

Overall pleased with sienna.
The sienna has a lot of room and a comfortable interior. I have had some transmission issues with my sienna. It tends to get stuck in a lower gear and then shifts hard into the higher gear. All of the bells and whistles still work great: DVD system, heated seats, ac etc.

Recommend car for reliability and best value for money: Toyota. 5 out of 5 stars.
I would totally recommend buying a Toyota car. I have never had any problems with reliability, comfort, or confusing features! These cars will easily get 200,000 miles on them, so it is totally worth the money spent on them. Also, the value of the car remains relatively high after you buy it! So you can almost always get a decent trade-in value for these cars.

Great minivan for a family of 4!
My minivan is very reliable and actually has good mileage. My favorite part is that it drives like a car. It is very roomy and perfect for long road trips with my family. The back seats fold down and make transporting large things very easy. No need for a friend with a pickup truck! It has a rear facing camera but no side cameras for the blind spots. I wish it had the GPS built in so I would not have to use my phone.

A car I would be comfortable giving to my kids.
Gas mileage is amazing! Car sometimes shakes when going over 60 mph. Lots of visibility makes driving easier and safer, especially on highways. Easy to clean inside and out although small items can be lost under seats. Enough space to store belongings and people comfortably when going on a trip. Car is older and I have noticed that the rearview mirror sometimes lowers when driving.

The functionality of the sienna is incomparable to other vehicles. Being a family of 4 with another baby on the way we really needed something that could comfortably fit 3 car seats, two adults and a dog. Having the features of a higher trim are really handy too like the DVD player for the kids. Also the automatic sliding doors and trunk are a huge help when carrying the kids to the car. Affordable and comfortable Toyota sienna.
The car was pretty affordable to purchase. We have been using the car for many years but it still performs smoothly. The car is also large enough for a big family and you are able to adjust the car seat to your own liking. We also buy a lot of groceries and the trunk is large enough to hold all the food. One con is that the car is very common and it can be hard to find when we have it parked. Also, it is a minivan so it is large and could be a bit hard to navigate on narrow streets.

2013 Toyota Sienna-Amazing comfort and storage.
We have had a couple of recalls since owning the vehicle regarding the sliding doors and airbags, which is concerning. We've never had engine problems; fingers crossed. Very reliable car. Having driven the car for almost 6 years... We would buy again. We enjoy the large amounts of seating and storage space. We also enjoy automatic doors. If we were to buy again, we would spring for a 4-wheel drive and for more comfortable features inside the car. We would switch from buying the vehicle with the small 'jump seat' to create an 8th seat and just go for the 7 seater.

Our sienna is a very good family vehicle! We take it everywhere! If rides comfortably and has plenty of storage room for a big family like ours! We like how reliable it is and it makes us feel safe because we have small children. Toyota is a well-known make and we would definitely purchase something else by Toyota in the future!

No complains at all, no mechanicals problems. Only change of tires and oil
It's durable, no damages causing by age or high mileage

A large compact car great for travel use.
We were searching for a large family car for vacations and travel and work. We knew we wanted a minivan and that the Toyota sienna was one of the most safest ones after doing lots of research. It was also convenient that they had an all wheel drive option.

It is so user friendly with the sliding doors and TV for the kids!
I love that my whole family can fit! I love how comfortable it is. And I love how much easier it makes my life with little kids! No complaints!

My van has a very high security rating. It has a ton of extras and my whole family loves it!
I love my van because it has many amenities. My children love going places now. I do NOT like the way the sunroof opens.

Converted into wheelchair accessible van, works great!
It is a Toyota van modified for wheelchair access. I like that it has a manual ramp and rear entry because mechanical ramps often malfunction and side entry vans make parking difficult. The van is comfortable and fits 4 people + 1 power wheelchair. The gas mileage on the van is really great, especially carrying a wheelchair. It is trustworthy and rarely has any issues besides the brakes wearing out once in a while. It has been a great vehicle and has helped me, someone with a disability, be more independent.

Perfect car for busy moms.
It sounds like I am driving in a tin can. The captain chairs take up a lot of the room for the third row.

So much space, no one has to argue over leg room or where to put stuff at.
We love the comfort of our van, the room it gives us all. We have had only a few minor issues with it and I would definitely buy another one again. I would highly recommend this vehicle to another person looking to buy another vehicle also. Smooth drive on the road.
