2016 Toyota Sienna Review: Problem Free Used Minivan Offering Luxury & Comfort

Alex Showalter
Nov 5, 2022

The 2016 Toyota Sienna lasts around 300,000 miles with only minor door latch and paint issues reported. At $17,275 to $25,450, it’s more expensive than other minivans, but worth the cost for the most reliable option on the market.

The suspension is extremely smooth, its optional all-wheel-drive system works great in the snow and the interior offers a mix of luxury & durability.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The steering feels loose compared to other minivans, second row seats are bulky to remove and the advanced safety technology is only offered on the Limited model.

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2016 is one of the best years for the Sienna, if you need a minivan this is the one to buy since its great reliability gives it a high overall score. Owner reviews praise the passenger room, comfortable seats, as well as the low ownership costs.

That it's comfortable and works well despite being a van
I love my vehicle because the color is beautiful and it also has great space for my whole family to enjoy fun summer trips
accountCircle Mira G
The backseats folds flat with the floor which makes it very easy to load big stuff.
The van is roomy. Very nicely equipped. I love the gray colors of the interior. I wish the red color of the exterior was a little lighter.

This is the best, sportiest, most functional and comfortable family van you can have.
I love the comfort of driving my van. I love the space for me and my kids. I dislike that it does not have a tv in it. I also dislike that the doors are not automatic.
accountCircle Theresa W
Plenty of space. I love the amount of space we have in the sienna.
I love the look and ease of driving it. I wear dresses and skirts. It is easy to get in and out of wearing these items to stay modest. The side doors can be opened just pushing a button from the front seat. I can also open them just barely pulling the handle and they will slide back. The key pod is also very handy. There is plenty of room inside. Going on trips can be tricky. My husband is on oxygen and carries 10-12 bottles of oxygen. He also has sleep apnea. We have his big machine that must go with us. There's plenty of room for all of that and his service dog too.

Siena is a spacious minivan.
It is very spacious, gets good gas mileage and seats are electric powered. It has powered windows. It has storage space as well. The back is large enough to load lots of groceries. The sliding door sometimes gets stuck if the passenger manually opens it and driver tries to open it by pushing the button upfront.
accountCircle Amy S
It's a good family car and I would recommend it to anyone.
It's big enough to carry my 2 kids around. Super nice to take on a long trip. Everything fits, including extra people when needed. It doesn't feel big (I'm pretty short) and it's easy to drive.

The Toyota Sienna in a great van for busy families.
The Sienna is spacious enough for my children. The backup camera helps out a lot when running errands during busy times. It doesn't have too many extra features that would just be in the way.

It is super safe. I have plenty of airbags to keep me safe.
I love my Sienna! It drives very smooth. I have many bells and whistles. I have an awesome sound system. I have plenty of space. Only complaint is I wish there was an electrical plug in the car. My last van had one.

The air conditioner is messed costs over 500 dollars to fix and it is a 2016.
It is very roomy, it is 2016 and the ac compressor went out with is 500 dollars to fix! I am so upset about it! I love how roomy and my Bluetooth capabilities with the radio. Everything would be great if the air conditioner worked. I feel like there is no reason a 4 year old vehicle should have issues with the air. It is a great family car.

Love driving my kids around town in my sienna.
Love the ease of the sliding doors. Love the 3rd row seating. Seat is not nerdy comfortable for me. I am short and I have a hard time reaching the pedals. The car gets great gas mileage and it is a great car for road trips. I wish the trunk had a automatic button release. There is a glare on the dashboard sometimes and it makes it hard to see how fast you are going.

Toyota sienna is a great family car!
The sienna is a great minivan. It drives really well. The backup camera helps me feel safe and secure when I am backing up or parking. The remote doors are awesome and so helpful with having kids. The stow away seats are awesome and there is so much storage.

Our sienna is a great family vehicle.
Our van is super reliable. It gets good gas mileage, is a comfortable travel vehicle with our 3 kids, a/c is great, easy to maneuver and drive. The space in it is one of our biggest needs, as we have kids who play sports, and with kids we have a lot of luggage on vacation. The kids have space and do not argue.

Poor engineering on fold-down 2nd row seats
Very satisfied overall, with exception of the 2nd row seats. They do partially fold, but you still lose 2-3 ft. Of space. The track is great for a dust collector, but there has to be a better way. Chrysler has the best fold down seats Why can’t the same idea be used without infringing on their patent? For that reason alone, I will not buy another Toyota van unless the improve upon their present track system.

The most important thing is safety and reliability.
I like the automatic sliding doors and the way the back seats fold in to create more storage. I am not totally happy with the look of the car.

The interior is very well organized.
No problems with this vehicle! Our family has both enjoyed driving and riding in it! We would purchase the same model of vehicle when one is needed. We have enjoyed the roominess of the interior for each member of our family. This vehicle has given us superb performance every day that we have owned it,

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Sienna?

  • Consumer Reports says the Sienna offers a comfortable & smooth ride with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Sienna at 4.4/5, praising the high-quality interior, but doesn’t like that the second row is difficult to remove.

What Common Problems Does the 2016 Toyota Sienna Have?

Common problems found on the 2016 Toyota Sienna include thumping noises, the paint peeling, as well as some sliding door alignment issues. Overall, these problems are minor compared to many other minivans, with average repair costs too.

Thumping noises while driving show up on some Sienna models in the first 50,000 miles. Owners report them being caused by latches which come out of alignment on the doors as the van ages, especially when going down rough roads. Re-aligning the latches costs around $40, depending on local labor rates.

Peeling paint is another problem, according to owners at around 100,000 miles. The paint, particularly on the hood and roof, tends to peel as it ages. When paint is not properly cared for and exposed to a lot of sunlight, it will start to fail. Repainting the affected areas costs around $1,000 per panel.

Sliding door alignment issues have also been mentioned at around 70,000 miles. When debris gets in the track of the sliding door, it can throw it off its path, leading to alignment issues as the van gets older. Getting the sliding door fixed costs around $300 depending on the severity of the problem.

There are 4 recalls on the 2016 Toyota Sienna, which is better than other minivans. The most serious recall covers rear brake hoses which may be too short, leading to failures. Toyota will replace the hoses on affected models for free. Other recalls cover the seat belts, and sliding doors, which are safety issues which Toyota will also fix for free.

How Long Will the 2016 Toyota Sienna Last?

A well-maintained 2016 Toyota Sienna lasts around 300,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles more than the popular Chrysler Town & Country. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other minivans according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $553 per year.

Since many used 2016 Sienna models will have 100,000 miles on them, buyers should be prepared to replace the heater control valve for $550, valve cover gasket costing $350, as well as the wheel bearings which cost $300.

accountCircle J L

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2016 Sienna since it offers a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen stereo system with Bluetooth connectivity. Safety technology is also good with a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades available include blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, along with adaptive cruise control.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a Good Value?

Yes, the Toyota Sienna is a good value since it’s the most reliable minivan offered in 2016. Blue book prices range from $17,275 to $25,450, making it more expensive than Chrysler Town & Country or Dodge Grand Caravan. When new, the price range was $28,850 to $46,410. Depreciation is better than other minivans, only losing about 8% of its current value per year.

What Colors Does the Toyota Sienna Come In?

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Toyota Sienna was launched in 2011, which was replaced by the fourth generation in 2021.

2014: Standard tow-prep package added on all models.

2015: Upgraded suspension, improved interior materials, as well as some minor exterior changes.

2016: Siri Eyes Free added to all models.

2017: Improved V6 engine and a new 8-speed transmission.

2018: Standard Toyota Safety Sense on all models, rear USB ports added.

2019: Amazon Alexa & Apple CarPlay are standard on all models.

2020: Blacked-out trim found on the Nightshade edition.

How Does the Toyota Sienna Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Sienna is the highest-rated minivan of 2016, offering an upscale interior, great technology, and no mechanical problems reported by owners.

The Honda Odyssey is another minivan which costs around $300 less. Where the Honda Odyssey stands out is with better standard technology, while the Toyota Sienna offers a nicer interior for the money. We recommend the Toyota Sienna for most shoppers, although both are great long-lasting minivans worth test driving.

The Toyota Highlander is a three-row SUV which costs around $2,500 more. Off-road performance is better in the Toyota Highlander, while the Toyota Sienna has more room for passengers in the third row. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since it’s a more versatile choice, although if you’re in the market for a minivan, the Sienna is a better choice.

Amazing family car with endless features!
I absolutely love my Toyota sienna! It has ample room for our family of 6. It fits all our equipment including strollers, luggage, groceries and many other things. There is so much leg room even in the back. My kids are always comfortable and safe. We have a removable middle seat in the second row and it comes in so handy when we have an extra guest. My kids love the DVD player and it makes the long drives enjoyable and hassle free! The sound system is amazing and customizable. The seat warmers are my favorite in the chilly days. It is an absolute perfect fit for my family.

Perfect for large family that is constantly on the go.
Very reliable. Drive it thousands of miles a month and with regular service no issues. Has a lot of room for everything that we haul around (which is a lot). Good gas mileage. Rides comfortably. I would change the console because things get stuck easily. Also wish back up screen was larger. Love the heated seats! Wish I also had cooling seats.

This van provides a nice smooth ride. I like the camera for backing up and blind spot detectors. The only thing I don't like is the flat area between the driver and passenger seats. I was used to placing things there in my last van and here they just slide right off into the back.

Solid, comfortable, but less dependable than I had hoped for.
I find it very easy to handle in general compared to older minivans, but we've had problems with the transmission, which has been expensive to maintain. This seems especially prone to acting up in the wintertime, so even though the vehicle handles generally well in the snow (but be aware that the high profile really feels the wind if it comes from the side!), I do not feel as comfy in it in the cold and ice as I'd hope to be.

I really cannot complain about anything on this van. I have had 2 rear end collisions ( I have been hit) 1 of them being a big dually truck pulling a loaded fifth wheel horse trailer. No injuries to anyone in my van. The main injury to the van was the rear bumper. Toyota has built in shock absorbers by rear fender.

My AWD Minivan - Comfort and Style
I always drive SUVs and never thought I would buy a minivan. Then I saw that Toyota Sienna makes an AWD minivan and decided to test it. I really like the AWD feature, that's a must for me in the snow, but also the sliding doors, the roomy third row seat, the comfort of the front seat, everything is well thought out for comfort. I'm so used to the comfort that it's hard to drive other cars now (for example, I lean on the handle on the driver's seat, and miss it when it's not there), everything is really roomy up front. I can close the side doors from the front. I like the lights on the side mirrors that alert to vehicles in the blind spot. One drawback is that it's not a performance car...it's good to drive but not exceptional for accelerating/passing people/showing off. For me, the comfort is more important.

Very convenient with the kids. Large so we drive it on road trips and have room for all our stuff. Like the way the additional sets fold up and when they are up there is a hole for stuff. Reliability is by far the best car we've ever had. Have had little to no problems, and what problems we have had are usually user error. I will say the trimming on this car is pretty fragile. The door panels, plastic coverings under the chairs and sunroof have all either completely fallen off or become loose. But I never worry about breaking down or being stranded with all my kids in this car.

I love the power doors and hatch. I don't have to worry about someone's hand or fingers getting pinched because it closes slowly and will open back up if it senses anything in the track.
We really love our vehicle. The 3rd row seats fold completely down, and provide a huge area for loading groceries, strollers, or whatever you need for the day. We can add in the middle seat in the 2nd row if we need to, but it can be stored in the back of the van to allow easy passage to the 3rd row for people climbing in and out. My favorite part of the vehicle, is the power sliding doors for the kids.

It is very spacious and comfortable. I get good gas mileage. It is great for family road trips and I like that I can take out a middle captain chair to make more room getting kids in and out of car seats/ boosters. I have had no problems with it in nearly 5 years.

This is the best, sportiest, most functional and comfortable family van you can have.
I love the comfort of driving my van. I love the space for me and my kids. I dislike that it does not have a tv in it. I also dislike that the doors are not automatic.

They should know that it is a safe vehicle and convenient for transporting children.
I like the space. I dislike the lower gas mileage that a van requires.

Good vehicle for cautious and new drivers.
No problems with the vehicle. The shift is really easy to use, and it rides smoothly. The phone that connects to it is really handy when you want to make a phone call, and the lane departure feature helps new drivers stay in their lane. The cruise control option works good, and it will slow down if you get too close to another car. Overall it is a great vehicle with lots of safety features that make me feel safer driving.

It's a family van and I absolutely like that we all fit in it comfortably, not to mention the ample leg room. I love the privacy of tinted windows and the reliable navigation system. Complaints are the automatic doors don't last and the very low bumper.
It can sync with your smartphone Bluetooth which makes it easy to use your phone while both hands are on the wheel.

Love my sienna, all wheel drive makes it special!
Love everything about my van. Only thing I'd fix is the navigation is kinda creep crappy so I use my phone.

Great and awesome minivan.
I love our minivan. It is great for the road trips that our family enjoys taking. We have had our minivan for 4 years now and it has always been reliable. My whole family including the grandparents fit comfortably and we love the fact that we can each control the air in our area.

Great family car, lots of space for everything you need.
This car has been so great for our family of four, and almost five. I didn't realize before how much I would appreciate having a minivan, but it has made almost everything about traveling with kids better.

Our Toyota has been worth the money.
We have had no problems with our Toyota. It is super comfortable. It also has a lot of room between the front and back seat. The back up system is also beneficial.

It drives very smoothly and gets great gas mileage.
I love that my vehicle fits my whole family, plus has plenty of storage. The backup camera is a great bonus. It also gets good gas mileage for a van.
