Alex Showalter
Oct 20, 2023

The 2020 Toyota Sienna lasts around 300,000 miles, with some relatively minor stereo system and transmission controller issues reported. At $26,875 to $44,998, it’s expensive, but worth the money for one of the most reliable vans on the market.

likeFilled The Good
The engine offers great power for a minivan, the suspension is smooth and there’s all-wheel drive available for snowy areas.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The interior isn’t as luxurious as some competitors, the stereo system is outdated and you have to remove the second row to use all the cargo space.

Is the 2020 Toyota Sienna a Good Used Minivan?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2020 is a fantastic year for the Toyota Sienna since it is extremely reliable and has a great, practical cabin. Owner reviews praise the comfortable cabin, all-wheel drive system in the snow, and the safety technology features.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are nice for a minivan, the seats are comfortable on long trips, cargo space is also excellent with the seats removed.
  • Reliability 10/10 – There are no major problems found on the 2020 Sienna. Models from 2008 through 2022 are all among the most reliable minivans on the market.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is okay from the standard V6 engine, although it’s not really a fun or fast vehicle to drive.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2020 Sienna is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. Optional upgrades include rear parking sensors.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 22 MPG, offering 440 miles of range out of the 20 gallon tank. Gas costs are $18 cheaper than average at $263 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2020 Toyota Sienna is a bit pricier than other minivans, but slow depreciation rates makes it a good value for shoppers.

A nice family car that the whole family would love.
The sienna is a very dependable car. I have the 2020 sienna se AWD with preferred package. It has all of the bells and whistles except for the DVD player. I like how the car has so many outlets for phone chargers. I also like the many cup holders that are decently placed all over the car.

This is the happiest I have ever been with a car! Super cool and comfortable.
I took a long trip with a friend last year in a Toyota sienna. Because it was so comfortable, nice to drive and with ample storage, I decided to buy a sienna for my family. I like that my 2 girls have some space from each other when we go out in the car. Anyone who has driven this car really likes how it handles the road too! It is quiet and not bad on gas mileage. It interfaces with my iPhone really well. I haven't had any problems with it.

The real deal on the Toyota sienna.
It is family friendly. Spacious with 8 person seating. It redirects you if you drive into another lane, letting off a beeping noise. Also beeping when seatbelt is needed. It has a mirror at the top that allows you to see through whole vehicle. Also comes with DVD player attached to roof of car. And auto closing doors.

The minivan we didn't want & now cannot live without.
We didn't want to love a minivan - but we do! As forty-something adults with growing children, we didn't want to submit to the uncool Soccer mom mobile. However, now that we have one, we'd never go back! It is incredibly comfortable and practical. We've taken it on long trips and would never do so again without our Toyota sienna. The features in the limited trim levels make everything so convenient. The seating is all very comfortable, no matter where you are in the van. We also feel our family is very safe with all of the airbags and rolled steel inside the panels. The gas mileage is much more efficient than the larger SUVs that we thought we wanted. To us, the sienna just had a more polished look inside also, as compared with the more truck-like, utilitarian SUVs. Plus, we can still fold down seats and haul around thinks like ladders and plywood. It is so helpful, sometimes I joke that the only thing it does not do is make our dinner. I do not think I would ever choose to drive anything else.

Toyota sienna 2020 review.
Love it, very practice for my family. Lots of space and good for throwing my dog in the back. Long trips are easy with the bucket seats and option if third row seating. Even moving is easy with the option to put the third row down. My kids love it, it is easy to clean and reliable. Great car for a family.

Spacious, comfortable and perfect for kids be it two legged or four.
It is very comfortable and spacious. The engine had power and climbs mountains with ease and we have always felt Toyotas lasts forever. The Siena had the third row folding seats which we like as we are able to pack gear for outings or even makes it easy to clean up the pups from the back and then they can climb up to the middle seats or front seats.

Toyota sienna review is not bad all in all.
To me, u wouldn’t say I have experienced much problems. I do not know if I could recommended it over other products but what I can say is that it is worth it for its cost. For me, I would like some. Thing better, but considering the cost and everything else, it is not bad for the price.

Great for families, use gas.
The vehicle works well, I wish there was a little more space and the seats a bit more comfortable. I went with 5 other friends and it seemed to hold up well on the freeway. Pretty big gas guzzler. Otherwise it is a great car for multiple people and large families.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Sienna?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Toyota Sienna is a very rational choice with a comfortable ride while also earning high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Toyota Sienna at 4/5, enjoying the refined ride quality, but doesn’t like the outdated control layout.’
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Sienna a 4.4/5, praising the durable interior designed to hold up to children, but owners don’t like the lower fuel economy.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Toyota Sienna Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Toyota Sienna include damaged wires, the stereo system freezing, along with delayed gear changes. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to other minivans on the market from the same year, leading to low repair costs.

Damaged wires have been reported by some 2020 Sienna owners within the first 20,000 miles. The soy-based coating on the wires attracts rats, which in turn chew the wires. Replacing damaged wires costs $50 to $500, depending on the complexity of the damage. We recommend a strobe light if you have to park your van outside overnight to deter pests.

The stereo system freezing is another complaint on the Toyota Sienna, showing up within the first 1,000 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo system which improve its reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while others charge around $50 for labor.

Delayed gear changes also show up on some Sienna models at around 10,000 miles. Transmission control module software updates are available, which improve the responsiveness of the gear changes. Many dealerships will install the newest software for free, while others charge around $100.

There are two recalls on the 2020 Toyota Sienna, which is better than some competitors. The most serious recall covers the fuel pump, which may fail. This is a common recall across all Toyota vehicles, and they will replace the fuel pump for free. The other recall is for the steering shaft extension, but it only covers 595 vans so it’s fairly rare.

How Long Will the 2020 Toyota Sienna Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Toyota Sienna can last around 300,000 miles, which is longer than other minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other vans, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $514 per year.

As a used 2020 Sienna reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the timing belt idler pulley for $400, the brake master cylinder costing $500, along with the throttle body, which costs about $600.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is excellent, and includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay features. Optional upgrades include a more powerful JBL stereo system and rear-seat entertainment system.

Standard safety technology is great for a minivan, and features:

  • Rearview camera
  • Lane keep assist
  • Pre-collision warning
  • Auto-emergency braking
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Front and rear parking sensors

Is the 2020 Toyota Sienna a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Toyota Sienna is a great value since it’s one of the most reliable minivans on the market, and it has low running costs. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $26,875 to $44,998, making it more than a Dodge Grand Caravan or Kia Sedona. When new, the price range was $31,640 to $49,415. Depreciation is better than some other minivans, only losing about 6% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Toyota Sienna?

The 2020 Toyota Sienna comes with a single engine option. It is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers a robust 296 horsepower. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, providing smooth gear transitions and responsive driving. Regarding fuel efficiency, the Sienna offers a combined fuel economy of 21 MPG. When it comes to acceleration, the 2020 Sienna can sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in about 7 seconds, making it reasonably quick for a minivan of its size.

What Colors Does the Toyota Sienna Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Toyota Sienna?

The 2020 Toyota Sienna is often lauded for its comfortable interior, which is designed with families and long drives in mind. Seats in the Sienna are cushioned and supportive, ensuring that passengers remain comfortable even on longer journeys. The vehicle can accommodate up to eight occupants with its standard configuration, and the spaciousness of the interior means that even adults can sit in the third row without feeling too cramped.

For those who opt for the seven-seat configuration, the second-row captain’s chairs provide even more space and comfort. Furthermore, the Sienna offers a smooth ride quality, adeptly soaking up road imperfections and providing a quiet cabin environment. Climate control, coupled with available features like heated front seats, further enhances the comfort level. The overall design, including the placement of controls and the user-friendly infotainment system, ensures that the driver and passengers have a pleasant and hassle-free experience on the road.

How Much Storage Space Does the Toyota Sienna Have?

The 2020 Toyota Sienna is well-known for its expansive and versatile interior, catering well to the needs of families and road trip enthusiasts. Regarding raw numbers, the Sienna offers a total cargo space of 39.1 cubic feet behind the third-row seats. If you fold down the third row, this space expands to a generous 87.1 cubic feet. And, if you need even more room, with both the second and third rows folded, the Sienna boasts a whopping 150 cubic feet of cargo space.

To visualize this, behind the third row, you can comfortably fit a stroller, a few suitcases, or a week’s worth of groceries. With the second and third rows folded, this space can accommodate larger items like bicycles, furniture, or even a kayak. Besides the spacious trunk, the Sienna also comes with a variety of small cabin storage spaces. There’s a dual glovebox, deep door bins, a console shelf, and several cup holders spread throughout the cabin to keep personal items, snacks, and drinks organized and within easy reach for all occupants.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Toyota Sienna was introduced for the 2011 model year, and will be replaced by the fourth generation next year for 2021.

2015: Minor exterior styling changes, upgraded suspension, and a higher-quality interior.

2016: Siri Eyes Free added to all models in the lineup.

2017: The V6 engine has been upgraded, and there’s a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

2018: Standard Toyota Safety Sense on all models, a new rear USB port added.

2019: Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa connectivity added to all models.

2020: Nightshade edition package introduced with black exterior trim.

2021: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with all new styling, engines, and an upgraded interior.

How Does the Toyota Sienna Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Toyota Sienna is a great minivan, offering a lot of technology features and outstanding reliability ratings, which helps it earn our recommendation for shoppers.

The Honda Odyssey is another minivan which can be found for about $2,500 less. Standard entertainment features are better in the Honda Odyssey, while the Toyota Sienna has lower ownership costs. We recommend the Toyota Sienna, although it’s worth testing both to see which you prefer since they are very similar minivans.

The Chrysler Pacifica is a popular competitor, which is available for around $3,000 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Chrysler Pacifica, while the Toyota Sienna is a more reliable choice. We recommend the Toyota Sienna since it’s cheaper to own long-term.

Toyota sienna is a great vehicle.

Spacious sienna! More room for more kids!
My vehicle is only 3 months old so I have not had it long enough to rate it fairly. So far it has been somewhat frustrating because I have had a hard time figuring out how to use some of the features and the manual wasn't always clear enough. I had to go to youtube for more information. The comfort is fine, so is the performance.

It is the best car that I have ever had. There are a lot of new features. It is so easy to drive and it is really safe. We can save a lot of money because the car is hybrid. The car looks really nice outside and inside. It has a large and beautiful screen. There is a good space to put stuff in the back of the car. The chairs have heat and cool, so it is really good. We can turn on the engine by using our phone.

I love the vehicle and the space and comfort it offers for a larger family.
The main issue I have with this vehicle is that the entertainment console can be difficult to navigate, especially while driving. Same with the TV that is in the back part of the vehicle. I also feel like there could be a more user friendly controls on the steering wheel. Right now the main controls tell you more about the vehicle and maintenance. It could be used. To help navigate the entertainment console better.

Bluetooth syncing with the iPhone is shaky. Otherwise great vehicle. Very minimal issues with console storage and the paint scratches incredibly easy especially with a darker color. For a family vehicle the dings become visible quickly. Also not a Toyota issue, but if you cancel XM that comes with it. XM will harass you every day until you die to sign back up.

Love my sienna and all of it is features!
I feel that the sienna is a great minivan. It is solid and reliable. The features available add to the comfort level of the driver and passengers. The style of the body is pleasing and color options are tasteful. The driver controls are well placed for use and comfort of the driver. I love the heated seats and the auto light feature. Toyota offers a maintenance package that takes care of needed requirements for the first two years and also the van alerts me to make the appointment prior to the work needing to be done. Toyota service is very efficient and friendly. They make it pleasant to have work completed on my van. The sienna is full of features that make it feel luxurious. It is spacious for the driver and passengers. The back windows lower so fresh air can travel throughout the vehicle making long trips more pleasant. The climate control is easy to use and offers quick adjustments for everyone's comfort. The sound system provides pleasant sound to all passengers. The automatic doors take some getting used to but function well and allow for ease of use with small children. The fold down seating in the back is simple to turn down for more cargo space for hauling extra items or large items. I typically have 6 passengers and with the features offered on the XLE we can ride in comfort and everyone is able to relax and be comfortable for long or short trips. I would purchase this van again.

The Siena had the third row folding seats which we like as we are able to pack gear for outings or even makes it easy to clean up the pups from the back and then they can climb up to the middle seats or front seats.

Love/hate relationship. The best and worst the vehicle that I have had.
My minivan has been a great travel car for all the kids and their friend. Great for the long trip to grandma, the kids have a lot of legroom and for all their stuff they have to bring. Is a 2020 the radio and one a the side mirror sensors and the reservoir has all been replaced. Overall the van has had room for us, it is been in 5 states and after all that has gone wrong I still drive it and feel safe in it. The driving assist is the best feature.

Toyota sienna- the good and bad.
Michelin tires that came with my car was a plus. Space in the back when your a kid is fine but as an adult it's not very comfortable being in the last row of seats. The air conditioner does not get cold enough so that when it is really hot outside, you have to blast it at full force in order to keep cool in the car. The same thing goes for the heater. When it's really cold outside, you have to blast it at full force to either keep your windows from fogging back up or to keep comfortably warm. The driver seat is not very comfortable. I had to buy another cushion for my bottom and my back so it doesn't hurt as much. You will realize this only if you drive as much as I do to run errands and bring kids to school or their activities.

The best minivan on the market.
The Toyota sienna is a great vehicle. It is spacious and safe. The sound system is awesome and it provides my family with both a comfortable and safe ride to and from our destination. I love that the vehicle has AWD being that I reside in a state that gets a fair amount of snow. I would purchase this vehicle again in a heartbeat.

Toyota sienna drives like a charm.
Plenty of space, the technology is super simple and straightforward. Accommodates our family of five with ease. Drives amazing. Engine has plenty of power while riding smooth at the same time. Sporty look for the minivan makes me feel like less of a soccer dad when driving it.

Spacious, family friendly van.
Very spacious and comfortable! My children love the DVD player. I love having dual control air and rear air that can all be at different levels at one time. It has a lot of great safety features that put my mind at ease when driving. We have had no issues with this vehicle.
