2011 Toyota Tacoma Review: Expensive But Reliable Small Off-Road Truck

Alex Showalter
Mar 19, 2022

The 2011 Tacoma lasts over 300,000 miles with only minor body and air conditioning problems. At $12,045 – 20,767, it’s high priced, but worth the money for a capable truck.

likeFilled The Good
Performance with the V6 is great, interior materials are nice and off-road performance is excellent with the 4WD models.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is rough on the road, technology is basic and the cabin is very noisy.

Is the 2011 Toyota Tacoma a Good Used Truck?

  • Yes, 2011 is a good year. Owners praise the great performance, strong 4WD system, and good build quality of the truck.
  • Reliability ratings are great with only minor lighting and A/C problems. Models from 20102015 are all good, with a few more problems showing up in 2016.
  • Performance is good from the V6, but the four-cylinder is a bit weak
  • Safety ratings are good, getting four out of five stars in government crash tests and offering an optional rearview camera.
  • Fuel economy is good at up to 22 mpg combined.

Get this truck, it's worth it.
Honestly it runs smoothly, it's very comfortable. Ten out of ten would recommend to any new truck owners. It has never broken down on me once. I love how its an automatic, it's also not that high. I am a thicker, 5'0 woman and I can get in there easily.

2011 Toyota Tacoma: a review.
Toyota Tacoma is a great vehicle if you want a truck but do not want anything big. Gas is reasonable and the engine will last a lifetime if it is taken care of. After ten years you might start having little problems like interior lights going out or visor breaking but that is little compared to some companies.
accountCircle Amanda E
Gets great gas mileage about like a car.
No problems (yet), 4 cylinder, very reliable, factory backup camera, no skid setting (helps with heavy rain and slick roads).

Durable and reliable vehicle.
My Tacoma is the most reliable vehicle I have ever had. It is very comfortable with easy to use controls. Other than routine maintenance I have had absolutely no problems and I will drive nothing but Tacomas. Starts on the coldest days and gets around in the snow with no problem.

Great model for owning a single vehicle.
I love my Tacoma! I previously had a Toyota mini truck and was impressed with its reliability. I had it for over twenty years before I sold it. I expect to have the Tacoma for a similar timeframe. The gas consumption is about 18 mpg. It has plenty of get up and go power to get me out of tight spots.

The brand Toyota is number one in the industry.
First of all, Toyota goes out of their way for detail, reliability and their reputation exemplifies first class. My family would always consider Toyota brand first in purchasing a new automobile in the future. All I can say, you cannot go wrong in considering Toyota. They are number one in my opinion.

The great and impressive Tacoma.
The Tacoma is an extremely reliable truck both in the road and off road. It combines luxury and ruggedness of a truck perfectly. However backseat passengers may not be as comfortable due to the raised floor in order to get maximum clearance for off road trips.

2011 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 quad cab.
Very comfortable ride, tows beautifully, never had any performance issues. We have white paint color and this year seems to have problems with the paint chipping and peeling for no reason. The mileage per gallon is fair to good, at 15 mpg on average, really like our Toyota!

Nice truck. Low miles and clean. 4 cylinder. Good on gas mileage. Bed liner and tundra cover. The only thing I don't like is manual windows. Good heater and air. Very reliable vehicles. Locking lug nuts and racing tires. Truck is army green. Interior seats have seat covers.

Good all-around city truck.
I have had issues with my transmission getting stuck in some gears as I increase and decrease my speed at a slower rate. My tire pressure light has been on for a couple months but all of my tires are fully inflated and have no holes. The size of the extended cab is perfect for my long legs and arms.

Toyota Tacoma, your forever vehicle.
I like my truck, it does the jobs that I am in need of and usually much more. It has been extremely reliable, and I have not had major issues with its performance or features at all. I have owned it for 7 years so far and plan on keeping it for quite a while longer as long as it keeps being so reliable and dependable.

My vehicle is a very reliable vehicle.
My vehicle is good and reliable. It is not a big truck, so it works well for me, seeing as how I am a female college student. The only issues I have with it are that it is too big of a vehicle for my personal preference and it does not accelerate as quickly as a smaller car would. It has pretty good gas mileage and I use it daily and have not had any serious problems with it.

What Do Critics Say About the Tacoma?

  • Consumer Reports finds the Tacoma to be a good truck with secure handling and above-average owner satisfaction ratings.
  • Edmunds rates the Tacoma 4.5/5, liking the powerful engines, but finding the brakes to be soft.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Tacoma a 4.7/5, finding the truck to be capable and reliable, but note the suspension is rough on the roads.

What Common Problems Does the 2011 Toyota Tacoma Have?

Problems with the Tacoma are minor, including melting headlight lens covers, air conditioning issues, and a lot of suspension noise.

Melting headlight lens covers are very common, happening at around 60,000 miles. The daylight running bulbs tend to be hot and melt through the plastic. A new set of headlight lenses costs about $900 to replace.

Air conditioning system problems show up as well in the first 15,000 miles. Replacing the blower motor solves the issue and many were replaced under warranty. If your truck is out of warranty, a new blower motor costs about $450.

Suspension noises are another very common issue showing up in the first 30,000 miles. The leaf spring pads come loose and simply lubricating them with WD-40 or grease solves the problem.

There are nine recalls including the tire pressure monitoring system, occupant sensing system, load-carrying labels, seat belt screws, leaf springs fracture, seat heater wiring, and hood scoop. Most serious is the leaf spring fracture, which can cause an accident.

How Long Will the 2011 Toyota Tacoma Last?

A properly maintained 2011 Tacoma can last over 300,000 miles, around 100,000 miles longer than a Chevy Colorado. Regular annual maintenance costs are affordable at $458 per year, according to Repair Pal.

As a Tacoma reaches 150,000 miles owners should prepare to replace the brake master cylinder for $900, axle shaft seals costing $250, and the oil pan gasket which costs $700.

accountCircle SHELLEY D

No problems at all and it get great gas mileage and I have had no medical problems with it at all. I do take great care of my car with oil changes and tire rotations.

accountCircle Randall W

Yes it is reliable. Do not have any repair bill but oil change and tire rotation. I don't want to brag but it is a very good truck.

How Much is the 2011 Toyota Tacoma Worth?

Blue book prices range from $12,045 – 20,767 making the Tacoma more expensive than rivals including the Ranger or Frontier. When new, the price range was $16,365 to $27,525. Depreciation is much better than average, only losing about 2% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Tacoma?

There are three main models of the Tacoma. The truck is available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Technology is outdated with the last update in 2009, and new features being added in 2012.

Base is the entry-level model with:

  • 15-inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Manual Seating
  • Four-speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX Input

PreRunner is a step up adding:

  • 16-inch Alloy Wheels
  • Power Windows And Locks
  • Cruise Control
  • Premium Cloth Seating
  • Six-speaker JBL Stereo System With Bluetooth

X-Runner is the sport-focused model with:

  • 17-inch Alloy Wheels
  • Lowered Sport Suspension
  • Hood Scoop
  • Unique Sport Seats

What Engines Come in the Tacoma?

The 2011 Toyota Tacoma’s 2.7L four-cylinder and 4.0L V6 engine options stay true to brand’s reliable reputation.

  • The base engine is a weak 2.7L four-cylinder making only 159 horsepower.
  • An optional upgrade is the more powerful 4.0L V6, which produces 236 horsepower and can tow up to 6,500 pounds.

What Colors Does the Tacoma Come in?

How Big is the Tacoma?

The 2011 Tacoma is average for a compact truck similar to the Colorado or Frontier. The truck is available as a two-door regular cab, four-door access cab, and larger four-door double cab. Passenger room is cramped in the back seats, even with the largest cabin.

There are two bed lengths available including a five-foot short bed and six-foot regular bed.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Tacoma Compare to the Competition?

One of the closest competitors in the same price range is the Honda Ridgeline. The Ridgeline is more comfortable on the roads, but the Tacoma performs better on the trails. Overall we prefer the Tacoma since it can tow more and is better off-road with the low-range 4WD system.

Another rival is the Ford Ranger costing $2,000 less. Where the Ranger stands out is with a more rugged work-ready interior, but the Tacoma has better reliability ratings. As a used truck the Tacoma will last longer and hold its value better.

Not rock solid as advertised
I am the original owner with 140,000 miles. The biggest issue i've had concerns the driveshaft center support bearing. From about 40,000 miles on the truck developed a "shudder" from stop to ~50 mph. Research pointed to the driveshaft center support bearing. Took it to dealership who agreed that was the issue and that mine "was worse than normal". Had a local garage replace it and did not resolve the original issue. Then took it to a dealer who replaced it, again, and ,again, it did not resolve the issue. So I ordered a brand new complete driveshaft 2 yrs ago and replaced it myself, and that DID reolve the issue. Then recently I had to put a new power steering pump in it because steering would tend to bind at certain points. While I was down there I also noticed the universal knuckle from end of steering column to steering rack was heavily corroded, so I spnt an hour spraying lthium grease into the universal bellows to lubricate them. So not sure if that or the power steering pump was the issue. Also was notified by dealer about a potential frame issue. This is my second Tacoma, the first ALSO subject to a frame recall. Why can't they build a frame that stays together?

The perfect get around and work truck
I live quite remotely and this Tacoma handles the winding switchbacks, both uphill and down. It has great acceleration and excellent braking on all terrains and grades. It easily pulls the hay wagon through the muddy fields and the backup camera makes hooking up a cinch. I change the oil every 3,000 miles since I bought it. The brakes have been done with the normal wear. Calipers are fine. I’ve never really had anything serious go wrong with it and it has plenty of rough miles on it. Paint is in perfect condition, as is the interior. I did upgrade the headlights and added a bully bar and crossover toolbox. I’ll drive my Tacoma until it won’t drive another inch.

The most versatile truck on the road.
The Toyota Tacoma is an extremely reliable pickup truck. It has great versatility as it is just as apt performing off-road as on the hard top. I have owned my Tacoma for nine years and have only had to change the oil. This pickup is comfortable to drive and satisfyingly meets the needs of any basic hauling or off-roading needs.

Great car. I bought it for 4 wheel drive and reliability. Everyone in Colorado who has one says they are reliable. I haven't encountered any major problems. The gas cap wiggles loose frequently and triggers the check engine light. Other than that, all's well.

Extremely reliable. I have had no issues in the 4 years I have owed it. I have put on around 60 thousand miles and all I have changed in my truck are the tires and managing the oil so that I keep the truck happy. Since I live in Arizona it is normal for the battery to go out every year but I have only had to change it once in a few years.

My Toyota Tacoma is extremely reliable. I have had no issue with it and it has over 130,000 miles on it now. I believe with regular maintenance it will drive up to 300,000 with ease. The engine is great on gas. The air is still blowing very cool air. Not a thing wrong with it. Even the paint looks great still. I love this truck!

Tacoma review for a 2011 used truck.
Smooth ride and fairly good gas mileage considering it is a four wheel drive vehicle. It handles exceptionally well in mud, snow, rain. The interior is comfortable with good satellite radio. The engine does have a turbo connection that I believe was added after purchase. I bought the truck used.

That my car is paid off and that I'm going to drive it until the wheels fall off.
It is a red Tacoma. The only real complaint I have is that the radio has a short in it and the dealership won't fix it because the problem can't be replicated in front of them.

The Tacoma is a phenomenal truck.
The Tacoma is an incredibly reliable vehicle. I have had practically no problems with it in my 10+ years of ownership, and I anticipate the same for the next 10+. I plan on driving this vehicle into the ground because I cannot imagine a need to upgrade from it. The ride has always been smooth, and even though it is 'smaller' than a lot of trucks available, I have never had a problem loading up what I need to load, or towing what I need to tow.

I have had virtually zero problems with this truck. It has 4 doors, so there is room for my whole family. It is great in all driving conditions. It has almost 200k miles on it and I have only had to do scheduled maintenance on it. I am planning on driving it until it dies. It gets decent gas mileage for a truck. It is comfortable for long road trips, and can haul everything we need for camping.

A great vehicle for running errands.
I love my Toyota Tacoma prerunner, simple, not complex with all digital equipment. The performance, I have mixed reviews. On take off from a dead stop is exceptional, but after it levels out it tends to slow a bit. When trying to pass someone, it does not have the extra power needed to pass. (after leveling off after take-off). Overall handling is great, easy to maneuver. A great ride for small cities. Having 4-doors is also a plus, especially for one - two kids. Even though the gas mileage is less desirable, the Tacoma does get better gas mileage if you use ethanol-free gasoline.
accountCircle Jerome H on January 21, 2021
Toyota Tacoma, the vehicle performs as advertised it has power and drivability.
The Tacoma is a midsize truck the is 4 wheel drive capable. I love the performance in terms of the power that it has when in 4 wheel drive. It is a very reliable vehicle in that it requires very little maintenance. The comfort of the ride of the vehicle is quite good for a truck that is 4 wheel drive. The only problem that I see with the model that I have is that as an extended cab vehicle it does not have enough room for my grandson who is growing as a 12 year old. An on-the-fly 4 wheel drive transfer case it is remarkably smooth in the shift from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive. The features on the truck allow for satellite radio as well as for external music such as an mp3 player. As a truck that is almost eight years old, the performance and power of the truck are close to when I first drove it out of the dealership.

Solid yet comfortable work truck, a little heavy on gas usage but still worth it.
A good solid vehicle, it can take ding and keep trucking. Plenty of room in the cab, front and back seats. 2 wheel and 4 wheel options make hauling through the mud/gravel/snow a lot easier. The only issue would be fuel usage, as with all truck it burns through gas.

It is a comfortable truck that I know that I can rely on everyday. I will buy another Tacoma in the future when this one finally wears out. My Tacoma is a good reliable vehicle. I am very happy with the choice we made when purchasing the vehicle. The only thing I regret about it is the space inside the vehicle. Everyone is scrunched up in the backseat and are very uncomfortable. Not enough space when we have others riding with us. The performance of this vehicle is good.
