The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is a compact truck with a price range of $27,840 to $38,834. It’s expensive compared to other trucks in its class, but low maintenance costs make it a great value.

The 2016 Tacoma has more problems than other model years. Rear seats in the Access Cab are cramped, and it’s noisier than other trucks.

Awesome 2016 Toyota Tacoma.
I love the cool technological features the Toyota Tacoma has. It has GPS built in and connects to my smartphone thru Bluetooth. The stereo system is awesome! And sounds amazing! Plus the wireless charging for my smartphone is the best thing ever! I have yet to try out the electrical outlets located in the back bed of the truck but I am sure it will come in handy camping or in an emergency. I'drives very smoothly and the steering is fantastic for a truck its size. The seating is fairly spacious and comfortable. I just wish I could have gotten leather seats and plastic lined flooring lol (my kids terrorize the fabric on the chairs and floor). Overall awesome vehicle!

The most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.
Super reliable. Great quality. Really comfortable interior. Love the leather seats. Wireless charging, sunroof, and heated seats are a plus. Lots of power and gets decent gas mileage. The vehicle is really utilitarian. The bed is large enough to haul around most items but is not overly large.

The Toyota Tacoma is the world's leading truck in power, safety and style.
The performance of the Toyota Tacoma is the best. It has power with the six cylinder, safety equipment that stands out, and a great style to add. It is an actual work truck that will come in use with anything you ever need and will deliver. I will never drive anything else.

Tacoma, the most versatile truck for a family man.
No problems. Heated seats are helpful when it is cold out. The bed holds quite a bit for a small truck. It is a few can, so the kids can get in with no problems. The sunroof is nice on cold days. The back up camera is extremely helpful when I have a large load and I need to back in.

Reliable and a pleasure to drive.
It is reliable, intuitive and a pleasure to drive. Hauling a trailer is no challenge and it has excellent visibility. Fuel economy is excellent and acceleration is good too. Seats are comfortable and it is a pleasure to drive. I have had no maintenance issues. The Tacoma is sturdy and reliable.

It's reliable, well built, great gas mileage for a truck, excellent features, and just fun!
My Tacoma was the best automobile purchase I have ever made. It is the most enjoyable vehicle to drive and I love how reliable it is.

Tough Tacoma truck that totally takes tops.
I really love my truck. The color, the gas mileage. The room. Everything about my truck is exciting. I drive it daily and love the ride. I am a Toyota driver for my lifetime. The performance of my truck is awesome as well. The ride height is impressive as well. The wheels are rugged and rough and ready to go.

Toyota Tacoma small truck big attitude.
Truck is spacious for me which surprised me as I am a tall man at 6'4'. Truck drives extremely smooth on all terrain and the handling is spectacular. Truck is small but big on power which is great for going in the woods and camping. Truck has extremely comfortable seats which is a big plus on long trips.

Engineering and typical dealer attitude
Bought a used 2016 Tacoma Limited with 20,000 km. Chrome is peeling off running boards, cab mount was shot and stereo was sh***y. Took a threat to return the truck to dealer to get them to admit and change cab mount and stereo. Chrome still peeling. They wouldnt give me a loaner vehicle for the day. Recall for coating frames that rot, they sprayed frame and gave me a loaner for that so booked cab mounts at the same time. After 1 year, oil change and tire rotation due (free service from purchase ) but informed me my brakes need " cleaned and lubed as truck is 4 years old" for 210$ + taxes. What a joke. Not impressed. Hood flexes at over 100km/hr. No keyless entry on passenger side. If you don't put one leg in first, then grab the steering wheel to pull yourself in, your knees and legs wedge in between seat and steering wheel and you can't get in (no telescoping steering and about a 2" tilt. The shifting (enough said). Not the quality or design of the "high end" truck you pay for. The truck looks nice. The backup and blind spot alarms are good. The 4x4 is ok. I like how the back seats fold down. 6000 lb max towing is a let down. The truck overall is nice, but It is not the "dream truck" I always though a Tacoma would be.

It is a gas saver but when it comes to speed and power it does not pick up.
It has a leak in the back window. I really think it should be a recall. There is also noises coming from the bottom when I go over speed bumps. Truck is relatively new and already needs new battery. I am very disappointed with Toyota. I keep on thinking if I made the right purchase with all the issues.

Nice truck but too small for a family of four
Truck is too small for a family of 4. The ride is very nice but the back seat is very cramped. It prevents you from accelerating when you are going down a hill which I have never experienced in a car. I would recommend this truck for someone who does not have children and does not need travel far distances.

Mechanical reliability is awful. But it does get us to where we go locally.
The engine light has gone on 3 times including 2x after work by mechanics. It is comfortable but I am afraid to drive out-of-state because of reliability issues. Of course the car was purchased recently from a mechanic who said his garage did a full test and wouldn't return money.

2016 Toyota Tacoma trd off road package.
It has been perfect to me. It has been very reliable. I have not had any problems out of it. Gas mileage is great. The resale value on it is the best. It wasn't very expensive off the lot. It rides very smooth. It is pretty spacious. It looks great. Would definitely recommend.

Decent gas mileage Not the best at towing Nice bed cover
Not the best for towing. Not much leg room in the back seats. Gets decent gas mileage. Not much power really miss my V8. Nice bed cover. Had a noise in the dash that I had to get fixed. Sound system was terrible had to upgrade instantly. If you plan on hauling something big I suggest you buy a bigger engine than a V6

Toyota Tacoma Review - nice driving, dark cabin
The seats are very comfortable and the driving is nice, although the pedals can be a bit touchy. The cabin is nice and spacious, but the windows are a bit short and make the cabin feel very dark. The backseat has enough legroom for everyday travel, but might feel a bit cramped for a longer trip.

What Problems Does the 2016 Toyota Tacoma Have?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma comes with one major recall and a stubborn transmission. The 2016 Tacoma has more problems than the 2015 and 2017 models. It’s the first year of the 3rd generation, and has some bugs that are fixed in newer models.

Transmission problems are most common, and include hesitation and hard shifting between gears. Toyota addresses the issues with a software update, but owners still report problems.

Vibration in the cabin around 2,200 rpms is also mentioned. Typically, it’s caused by the motor mounts.

Paint blistering and poor paint quality is another complaint from owners. Usually, it’s caused by the paint failing to cure properly at the factory.

There are four recalls affecting the 2016 Tacoma, average for a vehicle its age. Recalls include the driver’s knee airbag, rear differential, crank position sensor, and accessory hood scoop. Most serious is the crank position sensor, since it can cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

Pricey 2016 Tacoma trims range from bare-bones SR to value-packed Limited. The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is more expensive than other compact trucks, available from $27,840 to $38,834 depending on the model and mileage. With the current automotive market some used vehicles, including Tacomas, are selling over MSRP. When new, it had a retail price of $23,660 to $38,180. It retains its value better than other trucks on the market, losing about 20% of its value in the first five years.

  • SR is the base model with cloth seating, a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment screen, and Bluetooth connectivity.
  • SR5 is above it and has improved exterior styling, projector headlights, a driver information display, and navigation.
  • TRD Sport focuses on on-road performance and upgrades include a gray grille, hood scoop, sport-tuned suspension, and push-button start.
  • TRD Off Road is built for off-road performance and has standard four-wheel drive, a limited slip differential, Toyota’s multi-terrain select system, and improved off-road suspension.
  • Limited is the flagship luxury model with leather seating, a power moonroof, and an improved JBL stereo system.

A properly cared for 2016 Toyota Tacoma will last longer than other compact trucks. It has an expected lifespan of over 250,000 miles. Maintenance costs are lower than average. Repair Pal estimates it to be $490 per year.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

Technology is very good in the 2016 Toyota Tacoma, and it has more features than other compact trucks.

  • Standard technology includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and the EnTune suite of applications.
  • Upgrades include navigation, a JBL stereo system, and a Qi wireless charging pad.

What Engine Options are Available?

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma engine options include under-performing four-cylinder and all-new more powerful V6. Performance is average with the Tacoma’s base four-cylinder engine, and good with the V6. It does 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds, quick for a truck. The V6 engine tows up to 6,800 pounds, above average for its class.

  • The entry-level engine is a 2.7L four-cylinder with 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • An upgraded 3.5L V6 produces 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque.

What Colors Options are Available?

How Big is the Tacoma?

The all-new 2016 Tacoma is bigger than the outgoing model, and slightly larger than other compact trucks as well. Two cabin configurations are available including the 2.5-door Access Cab and four-door Double Cab. The Access Cab has very cramped rear seats, and the Double Cab is not much larger, only fitting children. Two bed lengths are also available, either a five-foot or 6.1-foot bed.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2016 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Trucks?

Owners rank the 2016 Tacoma 1st out of four compact trucks on the market. In 2nd place is the Chevy Colorado, which has more power, a higher towing capacity, and a lower starting price than the Toyota. Both trucks are capable off-road, but the Tacoma wins with its more advanced multi-terrain select system found in the TRD Off-Road model. The Tacoma is the superior choice for reliability, with fewer problems and a longer-lasting powertrain. Overall, the Toyota is the better truck.

Another competitor is the Nissan Frontier, which is very outdated compared to the Toyota. The Frontier is more affordable, but aside from that it loses to the Tacoma in every category. If you’re in the market for a small truck, the Tacoma is a better choice since it’s more reliable, capable, and rides better both on and off the road.

It has more problems than other years, but still not as many as its competitors. Positives include good reliability, and a low cost of ownership. Where it misses the mark is with a stiff suspension, and it’s noisier to drive than other trucks. Overall, it’s a well-made truck, but newer models have fewer reported problems.

It is a beautiful trucks that always catches eyes.
I do not look how the transmission gets stuck in certain gears and how it starts off in 4th gear while in drive. The power is not the best out of other trucks that I have driven in the last to include GMC, ford, and Chevy. Some of the positive aspects about the vehicle are the aesthetics, interior, and size of the vehicle. It is perfect for my outdoor lifestyle of fishing, hiking, shooting, etc. I also like how there are a lot of little things that you can add to the truck to improve the look and/or performance.

Reliable 2016 Toyota Tacoma.
I have owned this vehicle for over 2 years. I drive back and forth to work, approximately 50 miles total each day. The car is extremely reliable, and for a big truck I find it very efficient on gas. I also tow my 21 foot boat with no issues at all. Overall very happy with the car.

The greatest vehicle on earth!
I thoroughly enjoy my vehicle. It provides comfort, room and dependability. The interior spacious and very comfortable on long and short trips. The engine is solid and provides a non worry daily drive for me. I have never owned a Toyota. But this vehicle has made me a loyal follower. My intentions are to keep this vehicle and to sell or trade in one of my other vehicles very shortly. At that point I definitely will be purchasing another Toyota.

Manual transmission makes for great gas mileage.
A couple issues I have with my Tacoma is that it only has two seats and is a manual transmission. It is reliable and gets great gas mileage. I am used to driving smaller cars so the backup camera helps quite a bit with being able to work the standard bed through small parking lots. It does not have a lot of power as it is only a four-cylinder.
accountCircle James S on April 17, 2021
Vehicles information on the Toyota Tacoma.
Vehicle side view mirrors make noise when going 70 miles an hour. As well as the radio console goes out and the screen works. If we just push it sometimes it will not even work on the touchscreen. The door handles stick on the vehicle as well as the tires that are factory settings do not work while they get bald quickly. When driving long distance and using the cruise control it ravens higher than six rpms as well as sometimes it goes higher than three.

My Toyota Tacoma is the perfect truck for me.
My truck is a great looking vehicle, it is great on gas for a 4 wheel drive truck, it has a built in GPS system which works great and is easy to use it also has a backup camera which really helps with parallel parking also has plenty of storage under and behind the rear seats.

Great mid-size truck for transportation.
I have had my 2016 Toyota Tacoma for over four years and during that period, I haven't had any major issues. The only initial issue was the dashboard screen interface, which froze or locked up in first two years. Otherwise I have just done my normal oil changes without any further problems. The truck runs great.

The truck is a overall smooth tuning truck. Good gas mileage.
It does great in winter and summer, also has a great smooth feel when driving the truck. I have had no problems with the truck and it said to last long over years when driving. The truck has a lot of room for traveling and also doing outdoors thing if you are into that.

Best decision I ever made!
I bought it after inquiring to my mechanic what he thinks of tacomas. His response was “we never work on them because they do not have problems””everything he said was true. I have 120,000 miles after 4 years. I bought tires, brakes and wiper blades and I use the synthetic oil required. I am planning to get at least half a million miles before I let go. Something negative? Cloth seats stain easily and I got leather after a year. Otherwise - I am a tacoma guy for life.

Technology with an old school feel.
For a midsize truck it has all the needed options. Ability to tow many objects. Very easy to get in and out of. The hood scoop gives this truck an old school look behind the wheel. I have had no maintenance issues. The dashboard options free up my hands. I have fusions in my cervical and lumbar spine areas. My trd sport is a comfortable ride.

Good reliable truck that can carry load and passengers.
Vehicle is reliable and good size for variable loads. Easy to maneuver because of small size. You can load various things in the trunk and also carry comfortably 5 passengers. Drive is bumpy so if you are looking for luxury comfort, this is not for you.

It is a great truck and it has storage compartments under the back seats.
The Toyota Tacoma is great for travel and daily routine. It is reliable and easy to drive. It is a midsize truck, but resembles an SUV on the inside. The gas mileage is very good for a truck and makes it a good truck to have, especially if you like to travel or do not live close to your work. The 2016 model has a large backup camera, which makes it even easier to maneuver if you are a first time truck owner.

Hard working, off roading, fun to drive truck.
2016 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab Off Road edition; an outstanding vehicle. I looked at the full sized trucks and at Jeep products before finally deciding to buy the Tacoma. The only caution I would offer is to be aware of this vehicle's limitations. If you need to load 2500 lbs in the bed and trailer another 8000 this is not the truck for you. If you need spacious seating for more than two people this is not the truck for you. If you want a hard working midsize truck that is fun to drive and will go almost anywhere then you want this truck. Couple all of that to Toyota quality and service and you've got a winner. Bottom line is that I would buy this truck again.
accountCircle Adreana C on February 23, 2021

Love my Tacoma! Wouldn't drive anything else. Super reliable in the snow which was a huge factor for me. Good family vehicle for starters. Not a lot of space but that is expected out of a truck. Also hauls trailers as well. Over the years I have had it, I have never had any internal issues either.

Lives up to Toyota reliability, and Tacoma off road prowess.
Highly reliable, and very capable off road. Tows well for its class. Downsides. Fuel pump issues with no fix from Toyota. Transmission shifting is uncomfortable. The back seat is small for a quad cab, probably too small for a car seat if the front seat passengers are tall.

A gutless midsize sr5. With a tiny engine that can barely pull its weight.
1)torque compared to my 2003 is terrible. 2)the engine size does not compensate for the heavier weight. 3) I liked the center console folding up. 4) my left leg is not comfortable the door intrudes into the leg room. 5)the most annoying thing is the automatic Bluetooth pick up. 6) for a mid size truck the inside could be roomier. 7) bring back the t100.

Sticking with the affordable sr5 trim, the others are just too costly. This is a great driving truck perfect as a daily driver and family runner. Get the double cab if you need to haul passengers or the extended cab if not. The 6' bed is recommended as the 5' really cannot haul anything.

Perfect truck for family, business, and pleasure.
Number one quality is the Tacoma's reliability. I service the vehicle According to the schedule and I have never had a problem with it. The 2016 is my second Tacoma. I had the 1st one for 10 years with no problems. Updated to the 2016 for the navigation electronics and the extended bed. Also love the folder bed cover and interior light features in the bed. Seating is very comfortable, (I am 5'8") and it is loaded with storage features that come in handy in my line of work. Since I also have to cart kids around, the crew cab with full rear seat is essential. Plenty of room with storage behind and below the seats. I also like the exterior styling and size of the vehicle. I do not have room in my driveway for a full-sized vehicle, so the Tacoma is just right. I do not feel like I had to give anything up with this model truck.

Very reliable vehicle that can be used in varying terrains and climates. Bought a few years back and have not had any major issues. Taken in for regular maintenance and is kept in good condition considering the amount of use it is put through. Living in an area with high acidity content in the rain, the truck does rust in certain locations. Some places with chipped paint can show rust as well as near the tires.

The kind of car to keep around.
While gas gets pricy because it is a 15 gallon gas tank it is a very convenient vehicle, very friendly to women. Has never left me stranded and very tech savvy. Four door makes it family friendly and if you need to haul anything it hands load well. Oil changes and washing it often keep it running well.

Great truck, no major issues.
My truck serves me really well here in Colorado. I take it into the backcountry frequently and have had no major issues. The shocks are original and have started to make noise and kind of jerk on the first big bump of any ride but after that one bump they work great. I have also driven it across country and find the highway ride very comfortable even with more aggressive tires on.
