2010 Toyota Tundra Review: Powerful & Extremely Dependable Full Size Truck

Alex Showalter
Aug 30, 2022

The 2010 Toyota Tundra lasts around 350,000 miles with only some minor spark plug and steering rack issues. At $11,635 to $21,441, it’s a great value for a truck with low ownership costs.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The largest V8 engine offers excellent power, the Crew Cab model has more passenger space than competitors and the towing capacity is high.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is overly firm, the steering feels loose and the interior isn’t as luxurious as other trucks in the same price range.

Is the 2010 Toyota Tundra a Good Used Truck?

  • Yes, 2010 is a good year for the Tundra. Owner reviews praise the high towing capacity, comfortable cabin, and dependable engines.
  • Interior quality is average for a truck. The materials are all durable but not very high-quality, and the stereo system is easy to use.
  • Reliability ratings are excellent. Buyers should avoid models from 20072008, and we recommend buying a 20092020 which are all great trucks.
  • Performance is below average with the V6 engine, but the V8 motors offer excellent power.
  • The 2010 Tundra is reasonably safe, earning a 4-star overall rating in government crash tests, with 5-stars in the front crash, 4 stars in the side impact, and 4-stars in the rollover risk.
  • Fuel economy is poor, at around 17 MPG, which should get owners about 448 miles of range out of the 26.4 gallon gas tank.

Wonderful space for passengers. Nice style. Wonderful ride. Love the color

Great handling in the snow.
Great tow power. Handles very well especially in snow. Very roomy inside and i like that is has full size back doors also. Don't like the gas mileage too much.

Family friendly and forever spacious.
Runs smooth. Plenty of storage space throughout. Reliable. Plenty of room for 5 which is great with kids. Original stereo and speakers are great quality. Gas can get to be expensive but worth it for the quality of the vehicle.

I love the compartments in the vehicle.
Love the body style with the smaller back doors. The inside is very roomy. I love the seats and the ease in adjusting them. The compartments are ample and very easily used. The stereo is good, but I had problems with the Aux port. The steering and power are wonderful. The AC and heat are ample especially in South Louisiana. The check engine light has always been the gas cap. The Dealership and service have always been wonderful. My Tundra has 265,110 miles on it and is still running beautifully.

The tundra I have has a sleek design and people almost do not notice that I have 2 doors in the back. Great truck.
My Toyota Tundra is an all around great truck. There has been no major issues with it. The only problems I have had are routine issues that are all time based. It is a very reliable vehicle. The back seat is a little smaller than i would like, but it is still a comfortable ride. I have the base model with power windows and locks. All in all this vehicle is very dependable and drives very smooth. When the time comes for me to get another truck, I won't hesi to buy another tundra.

Very reliable truck with no maintenance surprises.
There were no issues until I got pass 90,000 miles. Then there were a few things that needed replacing. Before that, I only needed the basic oil changes, tires, and regular suggested maintenance. After 90,000 miles, the windshield washer pump went down as well as the electric window buttons.

I had my doubts about buying this pickup until I drove it!
Comfortable. Drives wonderfully. The back seat provides more than enough room for three adults to be comfortable. Easy to maneuver and part. Decent gas mileage. There are plenty of extras to increase comfort when driving longer distances. The center counsel has plenty of storage and is easy to get to. The information display is great! You can see the outside temp, your mpg range.. And # of miles to go on the tank of gas.

2010 Toyota tundra is a great truck for anyone!
The 2010 Toyota tundra is a beefy truck! Built like a tank. With suspension that can handle any terrain and feels really smooth! You will love the extra cab! It is so spacious with its simplicity but still offers the amenities of any other vehicle you would drive.

Transmission
2010 Tundra, 84000 miles and we had to replace the transmission. Will be my last tundra. It is comfortable and plenty of room. Mileage is not good. Tundra is a good half-ton truck for hauling goods from Lowe's. Yes, it is rated for pulling power of 9500 but the transmission won't hold up. Learn from my experience. If you need a truck for pulling an RV etc. Buy a truck designed for that application.

2010 Toyota tundra models.
It uses a lot of gas and has a lot of internal issues over time. It is a very inconvenient vehicle to drive as well. But it also is very comfortable and looks good which is a big perk for me personally. I really like the Toyota brand, not every vehicle is perfect.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Tundra?

  • Consumer Reports says the Tundra is stronger to take on American rivals, and has very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Tundra a 4.5/5 praising the powerful V8 engines, but doesn’t like the lack of interior storage.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Tundra 4.6/5 and enjoy the high towing capacity, but owners don’t like the fuel costs for the V8.

What Common Problems Does the 2010 Toyota Tundra Have?

The most common problems found on the 2010 Toyota Tundra include the engine turning over but not starting, leaky steering racks, and broken springs. Overall, these problems are less severe than other half-ton trucks from 2010, and maintenance costs are more affordable as well.

The engine turning over but not starting is a complaint some owners have at around 90,000 miles. The main source of the problem are the spark plugs, which tend to get carbon buildup on them. Replacing the spark plugs usually fixes the issue, and costs around $250.

Steering rack leaks are another issue mentioned by owners in the first 80,000 miles. The seals in the steering rack fail as the Tundra ages, and have to be replaced. Rebuilding the steering rack costs around $800, or some owners choose to replace it for about $2,000.

Broken springs are also brought up by some owners at around 110,000 miles. The rear leaf springs wear out as the truck ages and will need to be replaced like all suspension components. A new set of leaf springs costs around $1,500 to install, depending on local labor rates.

There are 16 recalls, which is much worse than other trucks from 2010. The most serious recall is for pedal entrapment, and Toyota will modify the accelerator pedal and remove floor mats to solve it. Other reviews include the tire pressure monitoring system and load-carrying labels, which are less of a concern.

How Long Will the 2010 Toyota Tundra Last?

A well-maintained 2010 Toyota Tundra can last over 350,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles more than top-rated competitors like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Regular annual maintenance costs are more affordable than other trucks from 2010 as well at $578 per year, according to Repair Pal.

Since most 2010 Tundra models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace items including the drive belt tensioner for $300, the oxygen sensor costing $375, and the fuel filter which costs $150.

accountCircle Brad D

No, none. Very reliable, good in snow, good off road, great power. 5.7 v8 engine. Has window trim and hood shield.

accountCircle Jesse A

Vehicle is nine years old and no major problems. Love my vehicle it is very reliable. Toyota is a good truck.

How Much Is the 2010 Toyota Tundra Worth?

Blue book values range from $11,635 to $21,441, making the Tundra more expensive than similarly equipped large trucks like the Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram 1500. When new, the price range was $23,455 to $42,455. Depreciation is better than average, losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Toyota Tundra?

There are two models of the Tundra offered in 2010. The second generation of the Tundra was introduced for the 2007 model year, and replaced by the third generation in 2022.

Base is the entry-level model with:

  • 18-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Dual-Zone Climate Control
  • Power Sliding Rear Window
  • Cruise Control
  • 6-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX

Limited is the luxury model and adds:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Automatic Climate Control
  • Leather Seating
  • Utility Rail System
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Wood Interior Trim
  • JBL 12-Speaker Stereo System With USB

What Engines Come In the Toyota Tundra?

  • The standard engine is a weak 4.0L V6 which makes 236 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque while getting up to 16 MPG.
  • A step up is the stronger 4.6L V8, which produces 310 horsepower and 327 lb.-ft. of torque and gets up to 17 MPG.
  • The flagship engine is the very powerful 5.7L V8 which offers 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque and gets 15 MPG. Performance is good, taking 6 seconds to go from 0-60MPH, and the towing capacity is high at up to 10,800 pounds.

What Colors Does the Toyota Tundra Come In?

How Big Is the Toyota Tundra?

The 2010 Toyota Tundra is a large pickup truck, similar in size to the Nissan Titan and Dodge Ram 1500. It’s offered as a 2-door Regular Cab, 4-door Double Cab, and larger 4-door CrewMax. Passenger space is excellent in the CrewMax model, but the Double Cab is cramped in the back seats.

There are also three bed lengths available including a 5-foot-6-inch short bed, 6-foot-6-inch standard bed, and full 8-foot long bed.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Toyota Tundra Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Tundra is one of the best half-ton trucks from 2010, with some of the longest lasting engines of any competitor. The dependability makes it a great choice for a used truck.

The Ford F-150 is another competitor, which costs about $1,000 less. The towing capacity is higher on the Ford F-150, but the Toyota Tundra has lower ownership costs. We recommend the Toyota Tundra since it will last longer, but both are fantastic trucks worth taking a look at.

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is another truck which costs $6,000 more. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Chevy Silverado, but the Toyota Tundra has fewer engine problems. We recommend the Toyota Tundra since it will last longer and spend less time in the shop.

No real problems. Comes with a tow package added in. You can add nitro to it and make it a racing vehicle. Has a v8 engine. With pretty great gas mileage. The seats are cloth and very comfy it is double cab with a good size back seat big enough to fit 2 car seats. Has 4 cup holders. 2 glove boxes. Also 5 overhead compartment.

Best vehicle I have ever owned.
Lots of room, more than enough beverage holders, the back seat flips up for more interior storage, as well as for my dogs. Seats are very comfortable, the main console is huge and fits in anything you can think of. There are 2 glove compartments. The 4wd is great in the snow. The gas mileage is ok, I believe 14 city and 17 highway. I would definitely purchase another tundra for my next vehicle.

Toyota tundra is a reliable and comfortable vehicle.
The Toyota tundra is really comfortable, and very reliable. It has 267,000 miles and the only problem with it was the water pump going bad about a year ago. It gets ok gas mileage on the interstate, but the truck is modified under Toyota racing program. Meaning it geared for speed rather than hauling, but it can still pull most trailers.

Very dependable truck. Best truck I have ever had. Would only drive a Toyota truck moving forward. Only issue I have had is the alternator going out at 120k, other than that perfect truck. I wish it came with better bells and whistles but for a truck that old it was expected.

My truck is nice and roomy, fits six people comfortably. It is also very reliable, I haven't had any major problems in the five years that I have had it. I also can drive it through all kinds of terrain, I am not afraid to go off-road in the mountains with it. Very reliable for driving on snow and ice in winter conditions. Why I'll stick with my father's taste in Toyota trucks.
Seats are quite uncomfortable passenger wise but the driver has much more control, it handles well in the snow, in four wheel or two wheel drive despite being a rear drive vehicle. Out of all the trucks I have had I feel safest in the tundra and it has less transmission issues than dodge or Chevy trucks that I have had. Overall it handles well and is safe. Wish it was more comfortable as a passenger.

The truck has a sound system that is so great, I get asked if I have subwoofers.
My 2010 Toyota tundra is exceptional in comfort and reliability. The cab is very spacious and the sound system has great sound quality. As my truck has experienced more wear and tear, as long as I take care of tune ups (oil change, tire pressure, etc.), I have not experienced any negative effects on my cars reliability or performance. The only thing that is inconvenient about the truck is the low mileage, and that mine is only two wheel, rear wheel drive, so it becomes a little hard to drive in the snow sometimes.

Most reliable transportation I have ever purchased.
I have owned all American vehicles until this purchase of a 2010 Toyota tundra. By far this is and has been the best, most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I have 240,000 miles on the truck and no major service work at all has been needed. It was purchased for a work truck in a machining business hauling steels and heavy supplies. Routine maintenance oil changes and standard little things only, light bulbs, washer fluid, ect. I have some friends that own the same truck, but a little older, only gripe is body roll. I have overcome this with heavy duty truck tires with 10 play rubber. I keep up on tire rotation and have no problems with the tires wearing out.
