2012 Toyota Tundra Review: Expensive Half-Ton Truck That Outlasts All Competitors

Alex Showalter
Mar 29, 2022

The 2012 Tundra can last over 350,000 miles with some exhaust and rare engine issues. Prices are high at $13,813 – 26,537, but worth it for the dependable drivetrain.

The 5.7L V8 is powerful, passenger room is excellent in the CrewMax model and technology is better than rivals.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Interior materials are cheap, the suspension is stiff and the cabin is noisy.

Is the 2012 Toyota Tundra a Good Used Truck?

  • Yes, 2012 is a good year. Owners are very happy with the comfortable seats, four-wheel drive system, and infotainment technology.
  • Reliability ratings are excellent. Tundras from 20102017 all have a low number of complaints, making them all great choices.
  • Performance is good from the two V8 engines, but the base V6 is weak.
  • The 2012 Tundra is a safe truck earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests and a Top Safety Pick Award. A rearview camera is available on the Limited model.
  • Fuel economy is average for the size at up to 18 MPG combined.

Nothing to dislike, has been very good truck

Toyota tundra safety and performance.
I love vehicle the best thing about it is the sunroof and the rear window rolls down. The gas mileage is horrible though I get around 12 miles per gallon and also goes through brake pads and rotors very quickly. It has lots of power and is super safe for my family.

2012 toyota tundra will not disappoint in style and comfort.
The toyota tundra has a small gas tank and it seems as if I am filling up every two weeks. My four door toyota tundra xsp has a lot of power, is 4 door and is very roomy. The only problems I have had with my 2012 toyota tundra are my leather driver side seat has started splitting and the window trim is coming off and it is very expensive to replace.

From my experience Toyota tundra's are the most reliable trucks on the road.
I like how smooth my tundra drives. I really like the back up camera and caution sensors that help when backing up into tight spaces. I really do not have any complaints about my tundra. I have driven it over 150, 000 miles and haven't had a single problem.
accountCircle Kurt H
Plenty of room for the family.
Very dependable truck. The cab has a ton of space. My family of 5 fits in truck with plenty of room. The bed is big enough for my needs.

Tundra is great for towing!
No issues with this car since I have owned it. Very reliable and dependable transportation and I would recommend anyone buying a tundra! This truck looks great, has great towing capacity, and feels incredibly safe for the kids that I have in the backseat regularly.
accountCircle Paul L
Plenty of power with a smooth and comfortable ride.
I love my Toyota tundra. It has been a very reliable truck for me the last 8 years. This is coming from a guy who has always had dodge pickup trucks and thought I always would. That was until I drove the tundra - it has a very comfortable & smooth ride. It has plenty of room for my growing family. And it has plenty of towing power. I am in no hurry to get another truck - I am have all I need right now with my tundra.
accountCircle Nan M
Looks tough and also acts tough.
No problems at all, very reliable love the backup camera, seats are comfortable, has a lot of get up and go. Only gets about 15 miles to the gallon city. I am tall and do not have a problem getting in the cab. Shorter people would probably like to have the extended step to get in.

Good truck if you don't do your own maintenance.
I wonder how many Ford engineers Toyota hired to develop the idiotic oil filter cartridge. I quit buying Ford's because simple maintenance required a trip to the shop. After purchasing and breaking 3 oil filter wrenches, I am thoroughly disgusted. The old canister type filter worked for 80 years. This is not an improvement.
accountCircle Austin A
The truck is dark grey, double cab and cloth seats.
The truck is a great truck but just a little out of date. Instead of being able to play my phone through the radio or connecting my phone through Bluetooth, I have to use the AUX cord. If I do not have the cord then the radio it is. The truck is smooth driving with a big bed on the back. The thing I do not like about the truck is the gas mileage. The gas mileage is not worth much. I drive 20 mins to work everyday then 20 mins back home. Six days a week I am driving to work and have to fill my gas tank at least twice. This is what kills me about gas and trucks.
accountCircle Zach M
Good car for not really going anywhere bad for long travels.
Gas mileage is awful depends on how much I drive which I drive a lot so I need an economical car other than that it is a really nice truck.
accountCircle Suri A
Basically a big truck, the seats and the air conditioner feel very nice.
It's actually my mother's car, but it is the car we use the most and since it is normally being used to pick up my baby cousins and for trips like when we go to the springs and camping trips it is usually really messy to where it is honestly uncomfortable. Necessarily the car itself is pretty good tho, like when we start driving to go somewhere the air conditioner feels so nice. The radio and the soft cushion seats are nice as well.

What Do Critics Say About the Tundra?

  • Consumer Reports says the Tundra is dated compared to rivals, but has outstanding owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Tundra a 3.9/5 and likes the strong V8 engines, but finds the interior is not as nice as the competition.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Tundra a 4.6/5 liking the high towing capacity, but finding fuel economy to be poor.

What Common Problems Does the 2012 Toyota Tundra Have?

Problems with the 2012 Tundra are relatively minor including issues with the exhaust, broken seats, and rare engine knocks.

Problems with the induction pump in the exhaust are the most common complaint at around 80,000 miles. The part wears out prematurely on trucks with the 4.6L V8 engine, costing about $2,000 to replace.

Broken seats are reported by some owners at roughly 50,000 miles. The stitching on the seat cover wears out quickly, causing it to tear. Replacing the cover costs around $700.

Engine knock is a relatively rare problem around 70,000 miles with the 5.7L V8. Owners report the cause to be excessive oil consumption leading to engine damage. Replacing the engine can cost over $7,000 depending on local labor rates.

There are 4 recalls, two of which are serious covering power steering leaks which increase the risk of an accident. The other recalls are for air bags and a label, and are not a concern when they’ve been replaced.

How Long Will the 2012 Toyota Tundra Last?

A properly maintained 2012 Tundra should last over 350,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles longer than top competitors including the Ram 1500. Regular annual maintenance costs are more affordable than other full size trucks at $623 per year, according to Repair Pal.

As a Tundra reaches 150,000 miles owners should prepare to replace items including the coolant temperature sensor for $400, blower motor costing $200, and control arms which cost $850.

accountCircle Anthony P

Yes, the 2012 Toyota tundra base model is reliable. It has not given me any problems beyond the regular schedule maintenance.

accountCircle Eliza C

It is reliable and we do not have any problem, as long as you maintain the vehicle you shouldn't have any problem.

accountCircle Shayne F

My tundra has been very reliable since I have bought it. The only issue I have with it is the horn quit working.

accountCircle H H

I think Toyota tundra ltd pretty reliable. It does not have any problems. Or maybe just a little because it is old now.

How Much Is the 2012 Toyota Tundra Worth?

Blue book prices range from $13,813 – 26,537 making the Tundra more expensive than other half-ton trucks including the F-150 and Silverado 1500. When new, prices were $25,155 to $43,595. Depreciation is better than rivals, only losing about 5% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Tundra?

The 2012 Tundra is available in two models. The infotainment technology and stereo were last updated in 2010, with the next major changes coming for the 2013 model including a standard infotainment screen.

Base is the entry-level model and comes standard with:

  • 18-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Eating
  • Dual-Zone Climate Control
  • Keyless Entry
  • Power Windows And Mirrors
  • 4-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With AUX Input

Limited is the flagship model offering:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Leather Seating
  • Auto Dimming Mirrors
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Rearview Camera
  • 12-Speaker JBL Premium Stereo System With USB And Bluetooth Connectivity

Optional upgrades on both models include:

  • Touchscreen Navigation System
  • Towing Package
  • 20-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Running Boards
  • TRD Off-Road Package

What Engines Come In the Tundra?

  • The base engine is a weak 4.0L V6 with 270 horsepower, which can tow up to 4,900 pounds.
  • A step up is the more powerful 4.6L V8 with 310 horsepower and tows up to 8,600 pounds.
  • The most powerful engine is the 5.7L V8 making 381 horsepower with a maximum towing capacity of 10,400 pounds.

What Colors Does the Tundra Come In?

How Big Is the Tundra?

The 2012 Tundra is a half-ton truck similar in size to the F-150 and Ram 1500. There are three cabins offered including a 2-door regular cab, 4-door double cab, and larger 4-door CrewMax. Passenger space is excellent in the backseats of the CrewMax model, and cramped in the others.

Three bed lengths are also available including a 5-foot-6-inch short bed, a 6-foot-6-inch standard bed, and a full 8-foot long bed.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Tundra Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Tacoma is another truck from Toyota costing $5,000 less. Where the Tacoma stands out is with better off-road capabilities, but the Tundra has significantly more room and a higher towing capacity. Both are long-lasting trucks, but if you need to haul more, the Tundra wins.

The Ford F-150 is one of its top competitors starting at nearly $12,000 cheaper for the fleet focused model. Towing capacity is better in the F-150, but the Tundra is more affordable to own. We recommend the Tundra for shoppers looking for a more reliable truck.

I love the style of the truck.
I bought the 2014 tundra 2 years ago and I love it, it is a v8 so she moves, I really like all the room inside of having a big truck, I have taken it camping to the beach to the hill country and it is great, in and out of the city it is a very smooth ride, I highly recommended this truck if you're looking for a new one.

Toyota tundra is the best!
My toyota tundra is the best truck on the market. I have had very few issues and mostly needed routine maintenance. It has been the most reliable vehicle. It is a very comfortable ride for a truck and has a lot of space in the back seat. The tundra has many different options and features available.

Everything I need as a dad and being in construction.
I love my truck, I live in the desert and the ac blows cold and the back seat has enough room for an adult and two car seats. It has seat cooling and warming and a DVD player for those long trips. The mileage could be better but it is not awful. Dual climate control.

Buy a tundra, they're great!
Absolutely amazing! Very reliable. Drives smoothly and has a great suspension set-up. The Bluetooth connectivity has issues: if you try to pair a new phone instead of the original, the system struggles and some features can no longer be utilized. A very common issue for Toyota's. Power seats and back sliding window are a definite plus as well.

It is a pretty good truck. It has a lot of get up and go. It has not given many any problems so far but it is not drive that much. It had low miles. The inside is comfortable and cozy and it rides well. It is hard to park sometimes because the hood seems to be wide.

Haul stuff around or take a long road trip.
Everything about the truck is very nice. It has a pick up and go, really useful for hauling stuff around or taking road trips. The only thing is that it's really big. It gets kind of hard to get around tight spaces like parking garages but it is still doable.
accountCircle Jorden M on February 14, 2021
The truck is comfortable. When I am driving with my son in the back, I feel safe.
I love my tundra, it runs beautifully and has a great amount of space. I recently had a child and the car seat is positioned behind the passenger seat--if there is someone sitting in the passenger seat they have to sit quite close to the dashboard and upright for the car seat to fit into the back seat. That is one of the issues I have found with the truck so far. The second issue is that when I turn on the truck my phone will not connect with Bluetooth automatically--I have to go through all of the individual steps before I can play my music through Bluetooth. The leather seats are quite comfortable, and it rides smooth. I definitely recommend!

My truck is unique it is lifted 6 inches because of the flooding in my area.
I love my vehicle mainly because of the large space capacity inside, only thing I do not like that the exhaust comes out of the side instead of the back. Also the 5.7 v8 allows me to be able to pull trailers and strong for work. Great for work and great for personal use.

I have 149 K miles on my long bed Tundra. I just had the complete tuneup, oil, fuel and radiator flush with MG additives and it runs as it did when it was new. I have had zero problems with my truck. My only complaint is that the oil filter is a job to get to due to having to drop the skid plate. I highly recommend the Tundra. I have had Ford Super Duty and Dodge diesel trucks and neither one matches up to my Tundra.

The tundra is a very reliable car for me. I take it hunting and off road driving. The handling is smooth except for a part we had to replace with an off brand part. Because of this the right hand turns are not able to be made as tightly as they should. Other than that the car has had no problems and runs smoothly.
