2018 Volkswagen Atlas Review: Unreliable Midsize SUV With Expensive Mechanical Problems

Alex Showalter
Jul 25, 2023

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas lasts around 150,000 miles with some serious engine and radiator issues reported. At $18,725 to $32,590, it’s cheap, but not worth buying when you’ll spend thousands on parts and labor to fix it when it breaks down.

likeFilled The Good
There’s a lot of legroom in all three rows, cargo space is great for its size and the suspension is smooth on rough roads.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The dash has some cheap plastic buttons, the engine is very weak and running costs are higher than the competition.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2018 is a bad year for the Volkswagen Atlas since it has more engine issues than other years. Owner reviews complain about A/C system issues, expensive repair bills, and a lot of noise.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are pretty nice for an SUV in its price range, the seats are very comfortable, cargo space is also great for its size.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are a lot of engine and general build-quality problems reported on the 2018 Atlas, making it one to avoid. Models from 20202022 are more reliable.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is poor from both of the engine choices, which are weaker than many competitors.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2018 Atlas is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera, while adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist are optional upgrades.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 24 MPG, giving 446 miles of range from the 18.6 gallon tank. Gas costs are $18 cheaper than average at $245 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2018 VW Atlas is cheaper than some other midsize SUVs, although rapid depreciation makes it a bad value as it ages.

Reliable, comfortable, very good for long drives with the whole family.
My vehicle is very reliable. It is very roomy and comfortable especially on long drives. It has never given me a problem. There's more than enough seating, leg room and cargo space. The camera system and Bluetooth technology is great. Suspension of excellence. Both kids and adults will enjoy this vehicle. It is also fuel efficient and the a/c is great. Even the base model gives enough features, well worth the money.

All the safety features, roominess, and many features like the car apple app.
I bought the car 1 month ago. I love all the features especially adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot warning and the back up camera. Plenty of room in the third row even for someone as tall as 6' 2".

Love my black on black atlas!
I haven't had it long enough to have any problems. The sel turbo v4 has all of the features you would want and excellent gas mileage because v4 but drives like a v6 with great pick up. Lots of room and has the 3rd row seat. 2nd row captain chairs makes it more comfy for passengers. Has a sunroof that goes all the way to the back seats. 3 zoned air and heat so everyone can control their own air. The seats are leatherette. Much better than leather like I had on my previous car.

Absolute best car I have ever had!
I love this car! It is roomy but still stylish! The cargo area in the back is big and you can even put down seats to make it bigger! Never had anything we needed not fit! We have bucket seats in the 2nd row which makes the 3rd row very accessible! We love it! Have had no problems so far!

Its best value for an SUV. Standard features are quality
Great car which has premium services. Love the power and sleek look of the truck. Handles well and great on gas

A Volkswagen atlas is a great car.
It is a great car. It is spacious and built very nicely. The only issue is the mileage is not great. We have taken it on road trips and it is great for a family. There are also several different colors you can buy it in which we liked. It is an overall great car and I would completely recommend it to anybody who is shopping for a spacious SUV.

Best 3 row SUV out there. Perfect for multiple car seats. Lots of cargo room.
This is an amazing SUV. Fits 3 car seats with ease. Love the 3rd row which is actually very spacious. Great for large cargo when you put back 2 rows down. Very comfortable and sleek. Tons of features including heated seats, Apple CarPlay, and lots of USB outlets.

Fits 6 people nice dive for big family.
Turns off all the way off light when waiting for a parking space. One headlight turns on only when reverse. It's wide and hard to park. Windshield wipers have issues when turning on. Back seat has very little room for passengers. It's hard to move the back seat up.

Car smells like mold
Bought the car based on its overall interior room and smooth ride. Less than 2 years into it we have mold issues from the sunroof drains or from the ac drains backing up into the cabin. The am radio has a hum on every station but stops humming when you shut the car off. We had the car in to Toms River for the mold smell, the changed the cabin filter and sent us on our way. The next day the smell was back with a vengeance and the dealer told us we couldnt bring it in for at least a week. We bought it to another dealership , the kept it for a week and changed the interior, unclogged the sunroof vents and the smell came back within 2 weeks. I regret buying this vehicle.

Worst mistake!
We've bought the VW Atlas R line ( top of the line) on November 2017 and we'll be trading it in this Summer. We are a big family and our kids play sports almost everday so having a big SUV is a must. We bought it based on the space which seats seven and it has a big trunk when you fold the last row. The outside look is great and the inside looks even better with the two tone leather seats! However it was in for rust repair twice within the first four weeks after purchase, the remote starter works if you are literally five feet away from the car ( as per the experts at VW Orangeville, that's a normal!) Every single light in the dashboard has been on several times, electrical issues, overall this is not a reliable SUV as we were expecting and for the price its definitely not worth a cent. Can't wait to get rid of it! We have had enough headaches with this SUV! Definitely the worst purchase we've ever made!

The design of the car makes it look so slick and modern.
Safety could be better the brakes on my car work great. A good and reasonable price I got it for and best purchase yet. The brakes and traction on my car are very close to either sub par and great. Apart from breaking the design looks so great with the black colorway.

Much more stylish than a minivan.
Seven passenger vehicle, very spacious with lots of leg room. Able to fit three car seats with cargo space in the trunk even when using the third row seating. Seat warmers to keep you warm in the winter months and ac vents in the second and third rows to keep all passengers cool in the summer months.

Family friendly but a feels cheap.
The exterior metal is very easily dented! The interior is nice and very spacious. I recommend purchasing the technology. I regret not having that. Perfect if you have kids or for traveling and not needing a minivan. It rides pretty smooth but does not feel very safe compared to other SUVs.

The atlas was an ideal car for my family, but had too many issues from the start.
Had to replace the battery multiple times because it would die when the auto start/stop function was running. This would happen on major roads at red lights. The car size and comfort was wonderful but the issues were not. My car was brand new model so maybe the issues have all been worked out at this point.

What Do Critics Say About the VW Atlas?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 VW Atlas puts size and functionality at the forefront with its new design, but has only average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Atlas at 3.4/5, enjoying the comfortable suspension on rough roads, but doesn’t like the slow acceleration.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the VW Atlas a 3.9/5, praising the easy accessibility to the third row, but owners don’t like the weak 3.6L engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 VW Atlas include the engine stalling, coolant leaks, along with excessive wind noise in the cabin. Overall, these problems are worse than a lot of other midsize SUVs on the market, leading to more expensive repair costs as the Atlas ages.

The engine stalling is the most widespread complaint on the 2018 VW Atlas, showing up in the first 5,000 miles. There are a lot of engine sensor issues which cause the engine to have an incorrect air to fuel ratio, and stall while driving. Replacing sensors can cost $150 to $500 per sensor, depending on the source of the issue. You can usually diagnose the sensor that has failed by using an OBD-II scan tool.

Coolant leaks are another serious problem found on the 2018 Atlas at around 25,000 miles. There are several sources for the leaks including faulty radiator cores, blown gaskets on the engine, along with damaged coolant lines. Replacing the radiator costs over $1,000, gaskets cost around $1,200 to change, and coolant lines cost around $400 to swap out.

Excessive wind noise is also mentioned by 2018 Atlas owners within the first 1,000 miles. There are a lot of window and door seals that fail, letting in a lot of noise while driving. Replacing the seals can cost $300 to $750, depending on which seal has failed.

There are 16 recalls on the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, which is much worse than nearly any other midsize SUV on the market. The most serious recall covers insufficient coating on the brake caliper pistons, which can lead to a loss of brake force. VW will replace the calipers on affected models for free. Other serious recalls include fuel leaks, the A/C drain tube clogging, along with the rear springs fracturing.

How Long Will the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Last?

A well-maintained 2018 VW Atlas may last around 150,000 miles before it becomes too expensive to keep running, which is much shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than other SUVs as well, at $635 per year, according to data provided by Repair Pal.

As a used 2018 Atlas reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history owners should be prepared to replace the axle shaft seals for $355, coolant reservoir costing $750, along with the A/C condenser which costs $950.

accountCircle Christine G

No problems so far. We thought we had an issue with the fog light, but we brought it in and all was good.

accountCircle Free L

Several recalls happened, but once they've been resolved, the car runs like a dream. The tire pressure can be touchy, and then I worry, but air for tires is often free at convenience stores...

accountCircle Dee L

Not at all I have made no trouble with me, since I got it that's why I live in keeping in good condition

accountCircle Matthew S

I've had several recalls for very minor issues, nothing that could cause damage while driving. I have not had any issues with my car.

accountCircle Sharon C

Yes. I have Had absolutely no problems. Not even little rattle sounds all cars seem to have. I feel safe in it.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is pretty good with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen along with a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is pretty basic for an SUV from 2018, only offering a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Brake assist
  • Lane keep assist
  • Parallel park assist
  • 360-degree parking camera system
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Automatic high beam headlights

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas a Good Value?

No, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is not a good value since it has more problems than other years, making it an SUV that shoppers should avoid. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $18,725 to $32,590, making it less than a Honda Pilot or Jeep Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $30,750 to $48,740. What Colors Does the VW Atlas Come In?

How Comfortable Is the VW Atlas?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is highly appreciated for its comfortable ride quality and spacious interior. This midsize SUV provides comfort on the road by offering a smooth and stable ride, even on rough surfaces, thanks to its fine-tuned suspension system. Its precise steering and strong brakes add to the overall comfort and safety of the driving experience.

One of the key highlights of the Atlas is its generous interior space. It offers three rows of seating, which is a standout feature in its class, comfortably accommodating up to seven passengers. Even the third-row seats are quite roomy, which is a rare quality among competitors, making it suitable for adults as well as children. The first and second-row seats are praised for their ample legroom and headroom, providing a pleasant ride even for taller passengers.

In terms of seat comfort, the Atlas offers well-padded and supportive seats, with the front seats featuring power-adjustable settings for added convenience. Higher trims even offer heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, providing additional comfort in various weather conditions.

How Much Storage Space Does the VW Atlas Have?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is a well-acclaimed midsize SUV, known for its spacious interior, that easily accommodates passenger and cargo needs. It comes with three rows of seating, providing ample space for a comfortable ride, and the generous cargo capacity makes it a practical choice for larger families or those in need of significant storage space.

Regarding specifics, the 2018 Atlas provides 20.6 cubic feet of space behind the third row. This is enough space to carry a couple of large suitcases or a full grocery shopping haul. If you need more room for bigger items, you can fold down the third row and expand the cargo space to a substantial 55.5 cubic feet. This allows room for larger items such as a bicycle or a set of golf clubs.

For the most significant cargo requirements, the second and third rows can be folded down to open up a cavernous 96.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. This gives you enough room to haul large items such as furniture, a kayak, or even move a small studio’s worth of items.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Volkswagen Atlas was introduced for the 2018 model year.

2018: First model year for the Volkswagen Atlas, replaces the VW Touareg as the largest VW SUV.

2019: More trim levels introduced with additional features.

2020: Standard Car-Net communications with Wi-Fi hotspot, minor changes to package availability.

2021: Minor exterior body changes, and some upgraded interior materials.

2022: Base S model no longer offered, small changes to standard features.

How Does the VW Atlas Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is a very bad midsize SUV since it has a ton of problems compared to the competition, and it’s also worse than other years of the Atlas, making it one buyers should avoid.

The Toyota Highlander is another midsize SUV which costs around $2,500 more. Standard safety technology is better in the Toyota Highlander, while the VW Atlas offers more passenger room in the rear seats. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since it is a much more reliable SUV, making it worth the extra cost.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a competitor which can be found for about $1,500 more. Performance is much better in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Volkswagen Atlas offers a higher quality interior. We recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee since they last longer with fewer mechanical issues reported.

My Volkswagen atlas is the perfect family SUV. It gets decent gas mileage and can tow our camper fairly easily. We use it even when it makes more economical sense to drive our sedan. The only issue we have is that the fuel size is a little small. We like it a lot and would love to get another.

The 2018 Volkswagen atlas premium v6 AWD. Is a very good SUV.
It is a good car, but Volkswagen does not like to many amenities. I haven't had any problems with the atlas. Ride smooth, handles really good. Very good acceleration. The atlas has very good brakes. The android auto works great. The only problems I have with the is the amenities. I purchased the top of the line model. Things it does not have is, no heated steering wheel. Has heated seats not cooling seats. Mirrors does not have power folding mirrors. Memory setting for driver 1 and 2 is not good at all. Most companies memory setting work on which key fob you have. In the atlas only works when you start the vehicle and select which driver bit is. Overall the atlas is a good SUV. The newer models do have some more upgrades them my 2018.

The shape of the car is gorgeous! Not too round or square.
For one, the atlas is absolutely stunning, inside and out! It drives so smoothly and does not drive so heavy or oversized like a lot of SUVs. It is decent on gas, especially on the highway and comfortably seats 7. You could actually fit 8 people but I feel like that is almost pushing it. The middle and back row both lay down for extra trunk space and the front two seats are super roomy. I wouldn’t trade this car for the world! Best car purchase we’ve ever made.

Best third row vehicle without having to buy a “bus”!
This third row vehicle has a ton of room. There is enough leg room in all areas including the third row. Having the third row also does not take away too much of the trunk space. One feature that is a little concerning, the vehicle locks itself after a short period of time if doors have not been opened. I locked my keys in my trunk because of this feature. However, I would recommend this vehicle to any family looking to upsize to a third row.

Volkswagen atlas review inside.
The one thing that I do not like to much about the vehicle is the auto engine shut off and how you need to turn it off every time you get in the vehicle. It is very reliable, the back seat is huge and I feel the third row would be only big enough for kids. I love the look of the struck, how streamlined it is, the space of the inside, parking I admit is a bit hard to do because of how while the wheel base is. Adding to that since it is so wide it is wheelbase it feels very stable on the ground.

I love the comfort of the vehicle. I am a little disturbed by the cost to repair, change oil, etc. I felt like the price of the vehicle was fitting for the quality and luxury. The atlas is a beautiful SUV. It is very spacious and comfortable. Its seats up to 7 people with plenty of room. I love that you can slide the middle row forward so that you can easily climb to the third row. It performs magnificent, and it actually drives like an SUV. Some SUV feel like you are driving a regular car, but not the atlas. It also feels like a luxury vehicle, but for a much more reasonable price. I love the start up remote, it allows you to warm up your vehicle while getting ready. I love one small detail, the middle row windows come with a sun screen protector that you can pull up as needed, perfect for the little ones to protect from direct sunlight. I love everything about this vehicle.

Love my car. So far have had zero issues minus one small glitch. Sometimes when using my phone for music via Spotify or Pandora the volume will not turn up. I have to switch it back to radio, then to the audio again and it works. Besides that I love it. The second row is adjustable to make more or less leg room and it is great. Wish I had gotten a sunroof though. Another perk I love and don't use often but love that I am able to is the CD player stashed in the glove box.

The perfect car for my family.
This model was a very great choice for my family of four. With ample room in the back as well as in the front, we can comfortably fit two adults as well as two teenagers and their friends. I highly recommend the purchase of the Volkswagen atlas for your family as well!

Spacious cargo, great features, smooth ride.
Great features, I love that it comes with apple carplay. Smooth ride with very minimal road noise. Lots of cargo. When third row is down that is plenty of space. Very spacious third row seating. It honestly feels like your sitting in the second row.

Why I love my Volkswagen atlas
My Volkswagen atlas is fantastic I absolutely love it it's comfortable for travel so much room for car seats and other passengers for long road trips for a bigger suv it's even gas efficient

This is a great SUV. Great car.
The Volkswagen atlas is very spacious inside. It is easy to drive with ample power. The Volkswagen atlas I purchased has a very generous interior with seating for 6 adults. Even with third row seating there is plenty of room for a stroller or packages. Folding down my the rear seats gives a “cavernous “ cargo area.

The VW Atlas is a smart buy, much more economical starting price than most similar vehicles. It is spacious and has a good deal of power on the road. It's fun to drive and ride in.
The VW Atlas is big yet fuel efficient, quiet and extremely room, particularly the 2nd row. It's easier to get in/out of than the Mercedes sedan I used to own. It has a extended warranty that is superior to most competing vehicles. It also has a very smooth drive and is an excellent road vehicle for long trips with tremendous interior storage space.

Safe, comfortable, stylish.
Atlas has an incredibly smooth drive. Once in a car crash, the car while up well and the height really helps with safety as well as vision. The cream leather seats are comfortable and the exterior matches the atlas well. The customizable interior and exterior really helps when it comes to preference of style.

Love how safe I feel & how much room there is!
I have a newborn and a toddler and I feel so safe while driving this car! Two car seats and still plenty of room!

The great size! It feels so spacious in the back seats.
I love how roomy and spacious it feels but it is still very easy to park. I love the large back that I can fit our golden retriever and stroller in at the same time. I do not love the light colored interior because I feel like it shows all the dirt. I also really like the safety features while I drive, the blind spot sensors and the back up camera are amazing!

The best third row seats!
The atlas is very spacious, even as an adult I can comfortably fit in the third row! Access to the third row is also super easy (even as a bench) with car seats installed. It is a simple lever. The middle row is adjustable position too to allow for room in both rows it gets great gas mileage wherever I have gone. Maintenance is on the expensive side with having to use synthetic but that is expected for the type of car. There is still plenty of room in cargo with the third row of seats upright. I can still fit my double stroller back there. I do wish there were more cup holders in the second row, there are only 2 in the door. I also would have liked climate controls for the third row. None of these things would stop me from buying another atlas. I love this car.

The VW atlas is my favorite of and VW I have driven! It drives like a dream!
We have had no issues with our atlas. It is comfortable, reliable and it drives like a dream. The atlas is super driver friendly. Features are easy to use and get self explanatory. The seats are super comfortable in all rows. Passengers are able to easily and very smoothly get in and out of the vehicle. I do wish that I would have gotten the auto open and close on the back hatch.

Sharp and classy but great off road.
Seats were just a little bit uncomfortable when it was first purchased but over time have broken in and gotten better. I do wish the seats were high quality. Other than the seats I have not had any complaints. My car is excellent off road and in ice or snow.

Whats most important is to have a brand new vehicle with no issues....
Yes and no... I love my vw atlas 2021 but I am having a issue with the remote start. It started when I had less then 2,000 miles on my suv. I took it in twice and they told me I have to keep my gas tank above 1/4 of a tank for the starter to work. I read the manual and it dosent say anything about that, it just said if the gas light comes on not to use the starter. If I have anymore issues I will be leaving more reviews.. I hope vw will Acknowledge these issues for future car owners and years...

It feels very luxurious. I had never driven a VW before, but I just had to try it and I am so glad I did.
I like the panoramic sunroof that goes along almost the whole ceiling. I also like how smoothly and easily it drives -- it doesn't drive all bulky, like a truck. I also love the technology and functions.

Awesome safety features and I love all the space!
The rear trunk door does not have an automatic open and close sensor. The carplay is not Bluetooth.

Comfortable SUV with smooth sedan-like ride.
Vehicle is very roomy and comfortably seats five. Third row seating is a little snugger than comfortable, for adults, but works for short trips. Ride likes a sedan, and gets decent mpg for a large SUV, using regular gasoline. Plenty of room for golf clubs in rear. I have had no issues with it.
accountCircle Rosemarie K on December 23, 2020
I love that the 2nd row can move forward making more space in the back row.
The car uses more coolant than normal which requires you to put it in the car in between oil changes. It has also had its fair share of mechanical glitches which thankfully have all been covered by warranty. Other than that it is a very comfortable car with plenty of room in both back rows.

The only thing I can think of is it is a little slow from to get up to speed.
I have no complaints about the VW atlas. Very nice SUV. Rides really good and comfortable seats. I would recommend this car to others.

Leg room for days! The best family car you have been looking for.
Incredibly well built car. The third row seat is the largest in its class and my giant super tall kids love the leg room. It rides like a larger SUV but I can actually park the thing! I will buy again when looking for a new car because I cannot imagine not driving it.
accountCircle Dave M on December 11, 2020
The best midsize SUV on the market.
It is a large car with tons of cargo space but it drives like a small car. Very comfortable ride and very easy to understand controls. It is a bit of a gas guzzler but the economy setting helps. It has a very large third row seating area so even an adult can comfortably sit back there.

Nothing particularly interesting it just does everything well
No problems. I like that it is roomy enough for the entire family. It's peppy especially for being this large of a vehicle with a 4 cylinder due to the turbo. The in car electronics are good. Sometimes it doesn't recognize the driver and you have to switch back and forth between saved drivers to correct that issue. It could be human error. My wife and I have our individual keys saved to use our individual profiles. We could be tricking the system if she remote starts the vehicle and I use my key to drive away. The downside is oil changes are expensive.

Travel vehicle for comfort and room.
This is the most comfortable car for long distance family travels. No complaints on any level except that it is not fuel efficient. It is spacious, three rows and comfortably fit 8 people with room for luggage. The drive and features are makes the ride easy.
accountCircle Diana O on November 21, 2020
Much more stylish than a minivan.
Seven passenger vehicle, very spacious with lots of leg room. Able to fit three car seats with cargo space in the trunk even when using the third row seating. Seat warmers to keep you warm in the winter months and ac vents in the second and third rows to keep all passengers cool in the summer months.
