2019 Volkswagen Atlas Review: Unreliable Midsize SUV With Expensive Repair Costs

Alex Showalter
Oct 3, 2023

The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas lasts around 150,000 miles, with some serious engine stalling and transfer case leak issues reported. At $21,700 to $36,900, it’s cheap, but not worth the money when you’ll spend thousands keeping it running as it ages.

likeFilled The Good
There’s a lot of passenger room in the three rows, the stereo system is excellent and the steering is responsive for an SUV of its size.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It’s slower than a lot of other midsize SUVs, there are some cheap plastic pieces on the dash and it’s expensive to maintain.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2019 is a bad year for the Volkswagen Atlas since there are still some mechanical problems, making it one buyers should avoid. Owner reviews complain about the short warranty, leaks, and spending a lot of time in the shop.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – The interior materials are nice for a midsize SUV, the seats are comfortable on longer trips, cargo space is also very good.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are still some mechanical problems on the 2019 Atlas, although it is improved from 2018. The models from 20202022 are much more reliable.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is not great from either the four-cylinder or V6 engine, which are both weaker than some competitors.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2019 Atlas is safe, and earns a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with automatic emergency braking along with a rearview camera. Optional features include parking sensors as well as parallel park assist.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 24 MPG, offering 446 miles of range out of the 18.6 gallon tank. Gas costs are $28 cheaper than average at $270 per month.
  • Value 7/10  – The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is less expensive than other midsize SUVs, although the rapid depreciation lowers the long-term value score.

I absolutely love my atlas except for this one thing.
I absolutely love my atlas it is probably one of the best cars I have ever had. There is so much room in every seat. Even with the third row up there is so much leg room. I have two car seats in my second row and my oldest can still fit comfortably in the middle if he does not want to sit in the third row. It drives incredibly smooth and gets pretty decent gas mileage. The only downfall it has is the air conditioner in the back is not that great one of my children is still in a backward facing seat and we had to buy a fan for his seat otherwise on hot days he sweats because the air does not reach him.

Great family vehicle with awesome features.
I love my atlas. It has awesome technology features and duel a/c which is needed in Texas heat. It has a good amount of space between the front seats and back seats. It also has a 3rd row if needed or you can put it down and have a good amount of storage area. Inside material is leather which is very easy to clean up. It has seat heaters which hm is great winter cooler temps. The key fob has the option to remote start which helps to cool down the car before you get to it. You can also open the back hatch from the fob which helps if you have your hands full. There is also a button to push to close which is also very convenient.

The VW atlas is the best SUV with a 3rd row on the market in my opinion.
We have had no issues with our atlas. It is a great family car with a 3rd row. Very reliable, nice interior features and a great warranty included from Volkswagen. The technology package is great and everything can be done using your phone with the interface in the vehicle. Drives great too.

A great family car with style!
I love the Volkswagen atlas. It is a smooth, sporty, and comfortable ride. I love the moon roof, captain seats, and stereo system. The only. Negatives about the car are the gas consumption (small gas tank), passenger seat is not automatic and sits very low, and the start/stop feature. Otherwise, it is a great vehicle and would recommend it to anyone with a family of 4 or 5 people.

Affordable Family Vehicle
I love my SEL 4-motion Atlas. I have driven GMC Yukon’s for almost 20-years and I did not want to move to a different manufacturer. But the spacious interior, customizable led dashboard screen, all wheel drive, panoramic sunroof, and affordability allowed me to explore more options. It’s also fun to be driving a vehicle most people have never seen before. Some of the obstacles include lower gas mileage than expected due to AWD, strange noises from the engine at shutoff which dealer and online forums indicate is normal, and limited aftermarket upgrades.

Good looking, dependable, economical, and functional vehicle.
I am impressed that it is quiet, stable, and comfortable. It has the color and style that I really like. Strong, beefy suspension that I can use for towing, yet nice easy ride. Has all the space I need for my family and work. Very good gas mileage. Comfortable seating. Has collision avoidance technology that is really advisable in today's driving conditions.

Best. SUV. Ever. Hands. Down.
I truly love everything about this car. From the touch screen, to the automatic braking to the third row for my growing family. It is a perfect family car. Even my kids love it! I really love the digital dash and how many different options there are on the views it has. And the panoramic sunroof is amazing.

Great SUV for Family Road trips! An upgrade to the soccer mom van!
We love our Atlas!! The 3rd row seating is roomy enough for even the tallest people. The leatherette seats and technology package that came with the model we purchased is wonderful. We have a 1 year old and a dog and our car is roomy enough to have them both in the backseat and so easy to clean too. Lane assist is incredibly helpful when driving on the freeway and the automatic braking is a godsend. Needless to say this is by far one of the best cars Volkswagen makes. Happy customer over here!

The service and warranty is an absolute joke
I have the 2019 VW atlas. BEWARE OF THE SO CALLED AWESOME WARRANTY. Read the fine print. It is absolute garbage. I will NEVER buy or recommend a VW product. I am so dissapointed and I absolutely cannot stand being LIED to. I cannot believe they are able to get away with all the bullshit lies to get you to buy a vehicle. They say one thing and than when it comes down to fixing the problem OH GUESS WHAT YOU HAVE TO PAY! Their warranty and claims of how amazing they are IS A JOKE. BUYER BEWARE

Looks nice....but has left me sad
I bought myself a BRAND NEW 2019 Atlas for my birthday last year. Had my first transmission leak at 215 miles...and have had 3 since (same part has been replaced), with residual transmission lag issues. And VW says it’s not a lemon so they won’t buy it back. I’m very disappointed in my thought to buy my first VW, nothing but a hassle. The guy who sold me the car has been the only one on my side during this whole process of trying to get it fixed and making me happy. It rides nice, the AC is cold, and the built in sunshades are awesome....but if my transmission goes out, car is useless to me. Will be offloading it ASAP

Not happy
I loved my Atlas, I had no complaints UNTIL I brought it to the shop for electronic issues in November (1week before it was 1 year). Today is January 5 and the parts are still not in!!!! I had to fight for a rental car. Not happy! It is my first VW and maybe my last!!!

Disappointed. Lacks good technology!
It is spacious and comfortable. The technology is half way done. There are many glitches when we use remote start. The radio gets stuck on fm, we cannot change to satellite radio. The thing to start the setup for the media center keeps popping up. The trunk you can open with a smile of your foot but you cannot close it that way. You need a free hand to close it. It makes all kind on noises.

Is a good SUV and one of the best midsize SUVs for large families.
The trunk does not open by itself. Either I cannot tow a RV more than 2000 pounds. The good thing is that is very roomy has 3 rows of seats. Very fuel efficient. It is stylish, comfy, and loaded with some nice technologies. Featuring apple CarPlay and android auto, VW's car-net app-connect makes it easy to link your smartphone.

Had multiple issues with the airbag malfunction light coming on - had to be repaired 3 times, seems to be fixed now. Overall vehicle is nice, comfortable, decent gas mileage and good reliability. Has a good warranty and Volkswagen is extremely helpful when you need them.

Nice detail and seats along with the color.
Its okay, the navigator could be faster and the way it drives in the snow is not as good but other than that I love the car a lot of room and easy to drive in. Even the seats are comfortable and my teen love it when it's cold and I turn on the heated seats.

What Do Critics Say About the VW Atlas?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas offers a generous and quiet interior, with lower than average owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Atlas at 3.8/5, enjoying the good compromise between handling and comfort, but doesn’t like the relatively weak engines.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2019 Atlas a 3.9/5, praising the spacious third row of seating, but owners don’t like the frustrating stereo system.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 VW Atlas include the engine stalling, leaks from the transfer case, along with issues with the crash assist system. Overall, these problems are worse than other midsize SUVs on the market, leading to more expensive repair costs as an Atlas ages.

The engine stalling is the most widespread complaint from 2019 Atlas owners, showing up at around 10,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by sensor issues, which cause the air to fuel ratio to be incorrect. Diagnosing and fixing stalling issues can cost $250 to $1,000, depending on the source.

Leaks from the transfer case are another issue mentioned by 2019 Atlas owners at around 30,000 miles. The seals on the transfer case simply start to fail as the SUV gets older, and they have to be replaced. Changing out the seals is a labor-intensive process, costing around $700.

Issues with the crash assist system also show up on some Atlas models at around 20,000 miles. Owners report that the system turns on randomly, leading to sudden braking. There are software updates available for the system. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while others charge around $50 for labor.

There are ten recalls on the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas, which is worse than most other midsize SUVs on the market. The most serious recall covers the rear coil springs, which can fracture, and cause an accident. VW will replace the springs on affected models for free. Other recalls include key chime warnings, air bags, headlights, the fuel tank, and tires.

How Long Will the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Volkswagen Atlas can last around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as the dependable Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than other midsize SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $735 per year.

As a used 2019 Atlas reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the A/C temperature sensor for $190, fuel pump costing $700, along with the water pump, which costs around $1,300.

accountCircle Karissa B

The rear cross traffic detector has not always worked. It works approximately 80% of the time. We recently had a cracked tail light and apparently it is a common problem with this model.

accountCircle Marie K

No problems at all. It is very reliable. It drives great in the winter weather which is important for me in upstate New York.

accountCircle Rita A

It's reliable but I have had issues with the check engine light coming on and VW doesn't seem to know what's causing it. But it runs fine.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is good, offering a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen, as well as a premium Fender sound system.

Standard safety technology is excellent for a midsize SUV, and includes:

  • Rearview camera
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Post-collision braking system
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Parallel park assist
  • Surround-view parking camera system

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas a Good Value?

No, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is not a good value since it still suffers from some mechanical problems, although they’re not as bad as the 2018 model. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $21,700 to $36,900, making it less than a Honda Pilot or Jeep Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $30,895 to $48,395. Depreciation is worse than other SUVs, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What Colors Does the VW Atlas Come In?

How Comfortable Is the VW Atlas?

The 2019 VW Atlas stands out not only for its impressive size but also for its commendable comfort features. It’s designed with the American consumer in mind, emphasizing spaciousness and a comfortable ride, making it an excellent choice for both short commutes and long road trips. Inside, the Atlas offers three rows of seating, with the second and third rows being notably spacious even for adult passengers – a rarity in many three-row SUVs. The seats themselves are supportive and plush, providing a comfortable ride over extended periods.

For drivers, the elevated driving position offers a commanding view of the road, and the well-tuned suspension guarantees that most road imperfections are absorbed, providing a smooth and quiet ride. In addition to physical comfort, the interior is thoughtfully laid out with user-friendly controls and infotainment features that further enhance the driving experience. Quality materials are used throughout, and there’s an underlying sense of solidity that gives passengers a feeling of security. Whether it’s a quick trip around town or a cross-country adventure, the 2019 VW Atlas makes sure passengers travel in comfort and style.

How Much Storage Space Does the VW Atlas Have?

The 2019 VW Atlas is designed with spaciousness in mind, catering to both families and those who require ample storage for their activities. Regarding raw numbers, behind the third-row seating, the Atlas offers 20.6 cubic feet of space. This is enough for daily errands such as grocery shopping or stowing away a couple of medium-sized suitcases.

If you fold down the third-row seats, that space expands considerably to 55.5 cubic feet, allowing room for larger items like bicycles, larger suitcases, or home improvement supplies. For maximum cargo capacity, folding down both the second and third rows will grant you an impressive 96.8 cubic feet of storage space, making it suitable for transporting sizable items like furniture or a plethora of camping gear. In addition to the main cargo space, the Atlas has various nooks, pockets, and compartments throughout the cabin for smaller items, guaranteeing that both driver and passengers have convenient places to store personal belongings or travel essentials.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The Volkswagen Atlas was launched for the 2018 model year as a new midsize SUV from VW.

2018: First model year for the Volkswagen Atlas, which replaces the outgoing VW Touareg.

2019: Additional trim levels introduced with more features.

2020: Car-Net communications and Wi-Fi hotspot are standard on all models, minor changes to available options packages.

2021: Small exterior body changes and upgraded interior materials.

2022: Entry-level S model no longer offered, minor changes to the standard features.

How Does the VW Atlas Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is a bad midsize SUV since it still has a lot of mechanical problems, making it one that we do not recommend owning out of warranty due to the high repair costs.

The Toyota Highlander is another midsize SUV, which costs around $3,500 more. Standard safety technology is better in the Toyota Highlander, while the VW Atlas offers a bit more passenger room. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since it’s a much longer-lasting SUV.

The Honda Pilot is a popular competitor, which can be found for about $2,500 more. Passenger room is better in the Honda Pilot, while the VW Atlas offers a more upscale interior for the money. We recommend the Honda Pilot since there are fewer complaints from owners as they age.

Spacious, comfortable, and affordable and SUV.
The atlas is a very comfortable and spacious SUV. I find that I have plenty of space in all 3 rows. We have the technology package and I like the android auto feature it has. The screen is touch screen and a decent size. So far we have had to take in the car twice for a recall, however, those are the only true issues we have had. Fuel efficiency can be better, but then again, we have a v6 engine.

Smooth drive rear camera for easier backup. Fast drive with v6 and picks up so quick. Compact and does not feel like SUV. Great and feels easier to drive. Car is spacious, the gas consumption is moderate. The adaptive cruise control is the best on the market. Many security features. Warranty is 7 years or 70,000 miles. Lacks acceleration. Poor interior illumination. Overall is a great large SUV for a reasonable price. If you need a spacious car, atlas is a great option.

I have 2 large dogs and a 4 year old and we have taken a few road trips (12+ hrs) to visit family. I absolutely love the 2019 VW atlas. It has large comfortable seats with a 3rd row seat that my 6’ tall brother can sit in and not feel cramped. Dual temperature control is an excellent feature that my husband and I utilizes daily. The cargo mats lock into place ensuring that no movement and maximum floorboard protection is achieved. Cons - if all seats in use, very small trunk space. Slow engine pick up when taking off.

I do not like the auto start- it is a little too nosy. I love apple carplay. I think the car has a very spacious trunk while still having a 3rd back seat. Some of the color options were frustrating- like having a lighter color interior with a darker exterior.

Best SUV with extra settings.
Very nice performance, good driving and very spacious. The back seats can go down and make much more space. I love that has 6 seats. Top roof opens and I can only close with the shade if I want to. Steering wheel has commands for the radio and there is a spacious arm drawer very spacious.

Great luxury SUV with lots of room at a great price.
We love our atlas. You cannot beat the quality for the price. It is very comfortable for a family of 5. There is now other 7 passenger SUV on the market that has captain chairs for under $70,000. Our atlas was half that price! The back seats are so roomy too. My 18 year old is 6’4” and he can ride comfortably in the second row. The rear also has a ton of space. Much more than our old Tahoe.

Mom car! Great for the whole family and friends!
I love my 3rd row seat. I love that there is not a lot of computerized edition that can go wrong. I have not had any problems in the year I have been driving it. It's a great SUV for moms! It has a sporty look but minivan feel and I love that. I can fit everyone plus friends and the kids are proud to ride in style. It is a great car in general.

Plenty of space for everyone
I have not had any problems with my vehicle. The only complaint I have is the gas mileage compared to my previous SUV of similar size. The positives of this vehicle is that it has a large sunroof and plenty of space for the whole family. The back also has plenty of storage space for all of the family's gear and groceries.

Great overall vehicle for a family.
Great car. No problems. I do wish it didn't have the start stop feature. Also a CD player would have been nice. It is just got an SD card slot that I have not used. Overall the car does everything I want/ need and is perfect for kids. I would definitely recommend this car. It is easy to use and even good on gas.

I love the crazy technology features that my car offers.
I love my Volkswagen atlas! It runs very smooth and has a ton of room, but does not seem like it is too big for me to drive. It is also very kid friendly, which will be perfect for when we decide to start our own family. It is very comfortable and has all of the updated technology features that help run your car more smooth. My favorite part about it is probably my heated, leather seats.

My Volkswagen atlas 2.0t edition.
I love my car. It is really big. Motor actually have plenty power and is real good on gas. It gets up and go whenever I need to. Plenty space for my kids hockey equipment that are huge bags. The only thing I wish it had was AWD on this model. Other than that I love it.

Amazing Volkswagen Atlas all the bells and whistles
I love the Atlas. It rides great. It has every safety precaution that manufacturers make. Fuel saving mode is easy. Third row seats make it convenient to shop and easy to lay down. Automatic is a plus. Wipers come on when a drop of water is detected.

Google maps and iTunes. Driving assistance.
I really enjoy my atlas so far. The only thing that I would mention would be when I hook my phone up to my car's Bluetooth, the music volume does not work. I have to unplug, pull up either my iTunes or podcast (whatever I want to listen to), and then plug it back in.. Which is really frustrating.

Great car overall - would recommend.
I love how comfortable it is. I also really enjoy the safety features - the automatic braking system during cruise control is unparalleled to any other I've seen before. The legroom in the back two rows is also phenomenal. This car is great for my big family; we (mom, dad, 3 daughters and a dog) fit in comfortably during road trips and we have ample space to spread out.

Perfect car for active family who does not want to break the bank.
Perfect size for our active family on the go. We go camping, travel 13+ hours to see family several times a year. It handles like a car, but feels rugged and safe to drive. I like a car with built in features, but nothing over the top/unnecessary that drives up the cost. Warranty is better than the other VW’s I owned. Built in voice assistant is pretty bad, almost unusable.

Not happy
I loved my Atlas, I had no complaints UNTIL I brought it to the shop for electronic issues in November (1week before it was 1 year). Today is January 5 and the parts are still not in!!!! I had to fight for a rental car. Not happy! It is my first VW and maybe my last!!!

Nice detail and seats along with the color.
Its okay, the navigator could be faster and the way it drives in the snow is not as good but other than that I love the car a lot of room and easy to drive in. Even the seats are comfortable and my teen love it when it's cold and I turn on the heated seats.

Dream family car for anti-minivan families.
I absolutely love our Volkswagen atlas. We researched a lot for a new family vehicle when we found out we were expecting our third child. It was important for us to be able to fit 3 car seats across and the atlas does this for us. We have family that visits often, so it was also important that we could have at least 4 adults comfortably in the car as well. The atlas also covers this. Lastly, it was important that the 3rd row of seating didn’t compromise trunk/storage space. Again, the atlas provides this. We love it and plan on renewing to the same vehicle when our lease it up!

Love my 2019 Volkswagen atlas.
The atlas provides just the right amount of space without have to have an oversized SUV. Available with captains chairs it is easy to navigate go through third row. The third row is only a two person seating, but it provides spacious room and you are not cramped for leg room.

Big comfortable SUV runs smooth and comfortable for big family.
It is pretty big SUV comfortable for all the family. 6 seater really helps when you are going on a trip with your family. I have not had much problems till now. 4 different mode of season helps a lot while driving. Built in sensors with lane assist, front drivers assists helps a lot in highway.

The perfect SUV for the mom on the go.
The car drives wonderfully and is very spacious! With three rows you can fit the whole family and it is also great for picking up groceries with all of the extra cargo space. I wish the atlas s offered a way to open the back hatch without having to do so manually and I also would like it to be a push start vehicle. Those two sacrifices are worth the safety I feel in the atlas. They even included a fully stocked first aid kit, making it the perfect mom car!

Smooth ride with lots of interior space.
Lots of space and easy access to the third row. Legroom is great in the back as we have several tall kids and everyone rides comfortably. Smooth and quiet ride. Not a great fan of the lane assistance as it jerks sometimes when you do not expect it to but you can turn it off if you want to.

Best. SUV. Ever. Hands. Down.
I truly love everything about this car. From the touch screen, to the automatic braking to the third row for my growing family. It is a perfect family car. Even my kids love it! I really love the digital dash and how many different options there are on the views it has. And the panoramic sunroof is amazing.

Comfortable car with plenty of space!
I love this car! It is so comfortable for me and my children- it fits 2 car seats with plenty of room in the middle. You can also fit so much in the trunk space, especially when the third row seats are down (which is easy to do!). The blind spots are minimal which is also a huge plus.

Love the space provided by the VW atlas.
We have had no problems with our 2019 VW atlas. We absolutely love it! It is very comfortable to drive. On our trim level, the seats are both heated and cooled. Great feature! The interior is very spacious. It was one of the features we lived most about the atlas. We love VW so much we recently bought our daughter a passat.

The color and interior are so amazing and very luxury.
Is nice and comfortable nice from the inside and is so spacious that extra people will fit. In the car plus the kids love it because is so spacious that everyone gets a seat with ease. And the way it feels when driving is like flying a airplane. Color is black and love the way the led lights flash at night.

Volkswagen atlas pros and cons.
Good car but does not get good gas mileage at all. The first gear makes grinding noise. I think the truck is to big for the little engine seats are comfortable a ton of room in each department it comes with car play for the iPhone users as far as maintenance really never had a problem and been driving for a while.
accountCircle Kenzie B on November 24, 2020
Safest car to drive on the road.
The vehicle performs very well. It is super safe and has many features that will help you on the road. There is a backup camera and lane assistance as well. The one thing that somewhat bothers me is it will beep at you when nothing is going on. It keeps you aware of the road and is the safest care I have ever drove.
