The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is one of the best used cars on the market, offering up high-end luxury and solid, sporty performance at a budget-car price.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
Luxurious, sporty, and affordable, the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta feels a lot more expensive than it is.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Some drivers find the ride a bit stiff, and the fuel economy is just okay.

Is the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is one of the very best used cars on the market today.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – This is about as comfortable as it gets outside of the luxury SUV market.
  • Reliability 8/10 – A handful of electrical issues aside, major repairs are few and far between, and the engine is built to last.
  • Safety 8/10 – Anti-lock brakes and traction control are included as standard features, and the car’s crash test scores are pretty good.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – 22/30 miles to the gallon, city/highway, isn’t bad for a 2007 sedan, but it’s not that impressive, either.
  • Value 9/10 – One of the best deals on the used car market today, and certainly the best price you’ll find on a luxurious 2007 sedan.

The good and bad of a Jetta
The headliner is coming off for some reason, a side mirror fell off on its own, a lot of pieces had to be replaced after a few years. The car is fast and has good amenities.

Great buy for your first car.
No fancy technology. Normal radio. Mp3 or CD player. Doors locked automatically once you start driving the car. Safety lock if you have a kid. Seat 5 people. Power button to unlock the back. Alarm system. Economical on gas. Great car for a high schooler.

Cheap on gas and I can haul a lot in it. Also is front wheel drive.
It drives very good. I have no things wrong with it. I like very thing about my car. The inside is very comfort.

The Volkswagen Jetta. Affordable and reliable.
I have always driven Volkswagen Jetta’s. I very first car was a Volkswagen Jetta. You can drive them well into 100,000 miles. I haven't had to have excess of repairs on the vehicle. Maintenance things like tires brakes oil change. Frankly I am not want to take great care of the car but this car is reliable. It is a good reliable car with decent gas mileage and some useful comfort features. Heated seats and console repair alerts. Drives well in all conditions. Has front wheel drive and is easy to handle. Small enough to get around tight congested areas and easy to park. It is not a big car though. If you need to haul a lot of things packages and equipment there’s probably not enough space in the Jetta. Although that being said it does have a huge trunk.

Has a lot of get up and go to be a small car. Excellent gas mileage, which helps a lot these days. Great factory sound system and cozy interior. Also a surprising very roomy trunk. Without a doubt I would recommend the Volkswagen brand. I am very pleased with my Volkswagen Jetta.

You should buy this car if you're looking for a reliable commute vehicle.
The car has great mileage. It's always reliable, I've never had to take it in the shop. The Bluetooth system is a little wonky at times though.

The car is in good condition. Has no problems and runs smoothly. Highly recommended. Volkswagen is always reliable.

I like how the car is very reliable with gas. Although it has given me trouble with the censors in the motor. The water pump also was very defective.

What Do Critics Say About the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta?

Consumer Reports offered some criticism for the 2007 Jetta’s stiff ride, but otherwise found the car an impressive improvement over earlier models. They liked the roomy, high-quality cabin, and they found the handling and engine power impressive.

Kelley Blue Book users give the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta a strong 83% recommendation, praising the car’s fuel economy, agile handling, and powerful acceleration. Drivers note that it feels a lot bigger on the inside than you’d guess from the outside.

Edmunds were impressed with the Jetta’s turbo engine option, they liked the GLI model’s tight handling, and they found the interior quality to be first-class all the way. They also noted that the exterior styling felt a bit out-of-date for 2007, and the fuel economy could be better.

What Common Problems Does the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta Have?

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta has just 199 complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 44 of these are for electrical issues, with drivers reporting faulty wiring in the exterior lighting system, and even electrical fires.

Airbags have been a recurring issue for some drivers. This seems to, again, come down to faulty wiring. Drivers report airbag indicators going off for no reason. There have been no recalls for this issue.

Drivers have reported premature wear in the hydraulic brakes system, with the rear pads in particular tending to go out before they reach the 12,000 mile minimum they’re supposed to last.

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta has 6 recalls on file with the NHTSA, which is roughly average for a car of this age. Combine that with a lower-than-average number of complaints and you’ve got one of the more reliable cars in this class.

How Long Will the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta Last?

Volkswagens are known to outlast most comparable cars, with the Jetta tending to run a minimum of 200,000 miles, and as much as 250,000 before the expensive repairs start to pile up. 300,000 isn’t uncommon for a VW, but that’s more likely to happen if you’re buying brand new than used.

Repairpal estimate an annual maintenance cost of just $449, with a new heater core being the most expensive common fix, starting at around $722, and new radiator hoses not far behind, at $604.

accountCircle Jon V

I bought this car new and didn't start having problems until the tenth year of ownership. The problems were minor and mostly expected. Overall very reliable.

accountCircle Usman C

Fairly reliable. However the car might tend rock slightly when undergoing high speeds (exceeding 130 km/hr).

accountCircle Ailyn B

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta base sedan is very reliable. It has not given me any problems throughout the span of three years that I have owned it for.

accountCircle Jason B

The Jetta does not have any problems I been driving the car very often, it only starts to have problems after a good amount of time.

accountCircle Jessica K

The car is very reliable. It tends to have problems but that is only because of its age. The car is not faulty whatsoever.

accountCircle M H

Yes it is very much reliable and do not have any problems with driving to and from place to place and good mileage.

accountCircle Sandra L

It is very reliable so far. I have not had any major repairs that have needed to be done I have had to change the oil and have put updated headlights and still no major repairs needed.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology in the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is a cut above what you might be expecting in a late-00s sedan. The base model includes an MP3 player with 8 speakers, and the high-end models come with a couple extra speakers and a 6-disc CD changer.

Safety technology is about as good as you’re going to get in this size class and this model year. Anti-lock brakes are standard, and VW’s anti-slip regulation helps to control your traction in rough weather.

Is the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta a Good Value?

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is a very good value. The fair purchase price on an entry-level sedan runs around $3,437, which is less than some budget compacts. The high-end GLI goes for around $5,354, and it’s a great deal at that price, too.

It’s priced to move, it’s moderately fuel efficient, and it’s easy to maintain. Add all that to classic VW engineering, a first-class cabin experience, and a generous standard feature list, and you’ve got one of the very best deals on the market.

What are the Different Models of the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta?

The 2007 Jetta is offered in five trim levels, from the self-explanatory Base to the high-end GLI.

With the entry-level Base model you’re getting:

  • Heated mirrors
  • Premium cloth seating
  • Manual air conditioning
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Anti-lock brakes and traction control

Next up is the 2.5 model, which is basically the same as the Base, but with a 5-speed automatic transmission, rather than a 6-speed automatic, and 16″ steel wheels, rather than 15″.

The mid-range Wolfsburg Edition adds:

  • Heated front seats
  • Power sunroof
  • 8-way power adjust driver seats
  • Leatherette seating

The 2.0T model is essentially a Wolfsburg Edition, but featuring a turbocharged 2.0L i4 engine.

At the top of the line you have the turbocharged 2.0L GLI, adding:

  • Sport leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls
  • 6-disc CD player with 10 speakers
  • Leather shift knob and hand brake grip

What Engines Come In the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta?

  • The base engine in the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is a 2.5L inline-four delivering 150 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 5 or 6-speed automatic transmission and configured in front wheel drive, and it averages 22/30 miles to the gallon, city/highway.
  • 2.0T and GLI edition Jettas are packed with a 2.0L turbocharged i4 delivering 200 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 6-speed DSG transmission in front wheel drive, and it hits zero to sixty in 7.9 seconds.

What Colors Does the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta?

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta offers a first-class experience in the cabin, through and through. While Consumer Reports felt the ride was stiff, most drivers don’t seem to mind. The fit and finish is thoroughly high-end, the seating is nice and firm, and the suspension has held up well over the years.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta Have?

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta has a firm 16 cubic feet of storage space. No folding seats, the trunk space is the trunk space. But, that should be more than enough, easily packing five full-sized suitcases. The interior offers plenty of cup holders, slots, and pockets, plus enough leg room to haul some groceries in the footwells.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

2007 was the final model year for the Jetta’s 5th Generation (A5).

2004: A 1.9L diesel model made its debut in 2004.

2005: The VW was relaunched with a longer wheelbase for 2005 offering more interior space. The suspension was given an overhaul for this year, too.

2006: The GLI edition made its debut in 2006.

2007: The final A5 model saw the reintroduction of the Wolfsburg Edition.

2008: The biggest difference in the brand new A6 Volkswagen Jetta was a major power bump, with the standard 2.5L delivering 170 horsepower. Trim levels were rebranded, as well, now being offered in S, SE, and SEL.

How Does the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta Compare to the Competition?

The 2007 Volkswagen Jetta is the most luxurious car you’re going to find in this price range. The 2.0 turbo models are more fun to drive, but even the entry level delivers sporty performance and a first-class cabin at a dirt-cheap price.

That said, the 2007 Honda Civic is a little sportier at the entry level, offering up a 140 horsepower i4 engine with agile handling, a comfortable cockpit, and Honda’s legendary longevity for about a thousand dollars more than a Base model Jetta.

2007’s Toyota Corolla is another excellent choice. It’s one of the longest-lasting used sedans on the market today, and priced in the same range as the Jetta.

The Jetta absolutely dominates its niche as an affordable-but-luxurious sedan. Whether that makes it hands-down the best used four-door in its model year, that depends on your needs as a driver.

2007 VW Jetta 2.5L 5cylinder automatic transmission
Love the car but it has odd electrical problems whenever it wants to. It thinks one of the doors is open sometimes when none are open. The window will decide not to go down or up (whichever is more inconvenient at the moment) until the next time you go somewhere (if you're lucky enough then) Still getting decent gas mileage though...

It is a five speed, and has a sunroof.
My car has two-tone leather. I have heated seats, cruise control, a good stereo system, and a sunroof. It has all electric windows and controls. I have only had issues with my catalytic converter due to having bad gas out into my engine before I purchased the vehicle. I used an engine fuel cleaner when I pumped gas and it is fixed.

If it's about knowing about my car specifically, is that it has gone for 130,000 miles with fairly minimal trouble and no accidents. If it is about Jettas generally, is that they are decent cars.
For a 2007, it did have a lot of transmission problems. My biggest complaint is the AUX port being in the glove compartment AND it stopped working after a year.

A great first car! Small in size but a reliable car all around.
I love the comfort of my car. It is small enough that it is easy to drive (and park) but still large enough that passengers have room and there is room for cargo. I also love the sunroof option. It is great for warm summer days. A downfall is it is not very good in the snow- especially going up hill. The heated seats in colder weather are a nice feature as well. However, they are only in the front, not the back. Another downfall is the USB input is in the glove compartment which is pretty inconvenient.

Its black exterior with silver rim. Leather seats. Sunroof.
I bought it with about 150,000 miles on it and it currently has a little over 20,000. So far it still runs great as long as I get regular oil changes. The only problems I've had with it is the air repeatedly has stopped working. I have gotten it fixed twice

Although we purchased the Jetta second hand the outcomes were amazing.
The Jetta is cool, the only thing is that when I have a problem there is very little mechanics that may fix the issue with positive outcomes. For example, a few months ago the transmission failed me, I had to find a transmission, and that was not difficult at all, what was mostly difficult was finding a mechanic that would give me a positive and effective outcome.

Reliable car that is fairly priced that comes with great perks.
Reliable car, has over 100k miles but still runs just as good since day one. Just replacing parts is expensive due to it being a German car brand. I recommend getting this car, my next car when this one finally runs down will be another volkswagen Jetta. Another perk is that they are not so expensive, they are fairly priced and you get a lot of bang for your buck. You can pick the standard features or upgrade. The standard package is still just as nice. Highly recommend this brand. You will not be disappointed at all.

Routine maintenance is critical; always use the premium gas and fully synthetic oil and keep the car running as smoothly as possible.
I enjoy the sunroof and adore the heated seats. I like that I can see out of all windows easily. Another bonus is that the mirrors can tilt so I can see the curb while parking, and defrost during the frigid winters. I dislike how quickly the wiper blades fall apart, even the more expensive ones, so I wonder if there is a design flaw in the way they operate in this model. I don't like how my head touches the roof when I have sunglasses on my head, so that is uncomfortable. I do like the seats but the side is wearing quickly. I was super lucky to upgrade to thicker waterproof floor mats since I live in a very rainy/wet climate. I am on the fence about the oil change notification messages on the dash / instrument panel. I think it was good initially to help get in a routine, but that's only because it was my first car. I absolutely love the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) but my snow tires don't have it so I get that warning message all winter. All said and done, I'm happy with my purchase but routine maintenance costs are expensive. I try to use a dealership for most services but it can be hard to find a good/honest/trustworthy shop; I tend to find a great one but then I move and am no longer close enough to go there.

Being a Volkswagen owner manual.
My vehicle rust easily. I have to keep buying headlights which are at twenty five a piece per bulb. My tires always need air. On the bright side it's amazing on gas. Another issue is it's a European vehicle so you have to tear the whole vehicle apart to fix something so little and the parts can be pricey. Other than that it drives very easy, and my kids love it. Very spacious.

It has a good size trunk. Lots of legroom.
Needs new tires. A.c. Needs fixed. Passengers window is broken. It runs good and had a tune up last year.

Very reliable with very little cost of ownership.
The comfort level inside is great. The major complaint I have is that the interior headliner is coming off. Otherwise it has been a very great and reliable car for many years for me. Also looks really sharp.

The vehicle I own has lasted me for a long time and still continues to work.
My car has lasted for 11 years and I have done little maintenance to it outside of regular oil and tire changes. This is significant because I travel a lot in a place with lots of construction and all seasons. The car has some rust in the usual spots but that only started this year. It's easy on the breaks as well as the gas and still drives well.
