Nov 17, 2022

The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta lasts around 250,000 miles with only some minor sensor and wiring issues. At $14,000 to $18,700, it’s a good value for an entry-level luxury sedan with excellent long-term reliability ratings.

Passenger room is fantastic throughout the cabin, the stereo system is very easy to use and there’s a lot of advanced safety technology available.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is firm compared to other small cars, the steering feels heavy and the GLI model isn’t as quick as the competition.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2017 is a good year for the Jetta since it is a great budget-friendly reliable compact car giving it a high overall rating. Owner reviews praise the long-term reliability, safety technology, as well as the smooth suspension.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are nice for a compact car, the seats are built to hold taller passengers, cargo space is also great in the trunk.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no major problems on the 2017 Jetta, giving it a high reliability score. Shoppers should avoid models from 20092011 which have more problems. Models from 20122018 are much more dependable.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is okay from the base 4-cylinder engines, although the stronger 4-cylinder in the GLI model is reasonably quick.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2017 Jetta is very safe, earning a 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, as well as forward collision warning with automatic braking.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is great at up to 33 MPG, giving 478 miles of range from the 14.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $56 cheaper than average, at $159 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2017 Jetta is cheaper than some other compact cars while still offering a more solid German build quality, making it a good value.

It has video backup, I can see when I am backing up.
I love my car. It is reliable, good on gas, the inside is great, the color is great, it rides smooth. It has great mileage. I love my car. The stereo system is great, it has great sound, the air is awesome. It does not take much clean up for the inside or outside.

Reliability and fuel economy
2017 Jetta S 1.4 5M purchased summer 2017. Odometer now 34, 610. Fuelly dot com - for the miles indicated - calc's 40.7 in 65 city 35 highway driving..................and if that were not snuff - in those nearly 35k.......no issues at all! The shifter and synchros permit easy shifting; the clutch is light - and the braking matches the powertrain for smoothness. I'd like a new car ('cause I'm stupid)...............but I'm not stupid e nuff to drop and winner............... Ez

The most important feature in the car is the dependability and gas mileage of 40 mpg.
This car is reliable. It drives smooth and the gas mileage is amazing! Plenty of space for passengers and storage. Love the touch screen radio!
accountCircle Eliza B
Comfortable, reliable, great gas mileage, looks nice, spacious for its size!
Very reliable, and the gas mileage on the highway is incredible. I have done cross country driving in this with minimal fill ups, and it is so convenient. It is pretty normal in the city and stop and go traffic. The Jetta is very comfortable and easy to drive.

My amazing purchase of the Volkswagen Jetta 1. 4 se.
The 2017 Jetta 1. 4 se is a really roomy and well driving sedan. It is really good on highway gas mileage and above average in the city. The tires and suspension respond really well to the road even at elevated speeds( I. E. 55-75 m. P. H. ). The interior is beautiful. The stereo console has a compatible camera for backing in and side mirrors warn you of oncoming traffic. The brakes are terrific. Also the console supports apple I play and android for hands free driving, entertainment and navigation. Making a phone call or sending a text hands free is done seamlessly. Just use your USB cord and it will sync for everything as well as charge, it is also Bluetooth compatible. One of the better car purchases of my life.

Fuel efficiency with comfort and dependability.
Great fuel efficiency. I am amazed I can get 40 mpg, sometimes more, highway, and about 36 mpg otherwise. It's also a very smooth ride. I bought a manual transmission, because I love that kind of car, and I couldn't be happier. Finale, it is very comfortable. The leatherette seats are very nice, and I love the seat warmers.
accountCircle Zoey C
Very nice basic car, perfect for anyone.
It is a very nice basic car. Not good in the snow, I would definitely change the tires to something better for the snow. Overall the car rides really well and is really good on gas as well. It is my first push to start car and that is definitely very handy vs actually having to use the key.
accountCircle BethAnn S
I love the apple play option.
It is a solid car that performs well in all weather and at all speeds. The sound system is high quality. The seats are comfortable and the car is low maintenance. The sunroof is nice on sunny days and the heated seats are nice when it is cold. This is my second Jetta and I will buy a third.

Don't buy it! Waste of money that kills the planet.
It's the most base version possible that I pay too much for. The transmission isn't great. There's no features that distinguish it from any other vehicle, and VW is just a bad company these days killing the planet

GREATLY DISAPPOINTED
I purchased my 2017 VW Jetta GLI in 2017 and have had to have the driver side seat repaired (while it was still under warranty and being accused of causing the damage). I just noticed 3 days ago that the seat is ripped again in a different location. I am a 4 time owner of VW. This is my last.

There is not one interesting thing about Volkswagens.
Expensive car to maintain and use. Seats stain easily (from condensation or rain when you open the door). Not easy to use or learn. Seats are not very comfortable, and do not adjust like most cars. Will never ever buy again, and highly do not recommend.
accountCircle Brenda M
Great gas mileage and parks very easily.
I do not like how low it is to the road, I do not like how cheap it feels, I do not like the interior.
accountCircle Kyle K
Good gas mileage, but that is about it.
A lot of issues with heated seats, brakes, blind spot monitor, engine noises. Great gas mileage. Quality of car build not where VW has been in the past. Have had to replace 3 abs sensors in a year, and still had dash lights blinking after changing them and the codes suggested it still needed them replaced. Wouldn't buy again.

Review of VW Jetta s, the negatives and positives.
Small, but reliable, beyond excellent gas mileage. Seating is uncomfortable. Expensive for regular maintenance. Expensive for other repairs if necessary. Hard to get in and out of if you are tall or bigger in size. Has a tendency to get a lot of flat tires.
accountCircle Katie T
The vehicle supports Bluetooth, has an AUX and USB outlet.
The Volkswagen is a great car for someone who's young and just began driving. This is my second car, first being a Ford Fusion, and the Jetta honestly does not compare. The car is loud, it smells like plastic, the features are pretty outdated for being a newer model, and overall the driving experience is severely below average. Great for 16-20 year old's who are new to the road. The gas mileage is fair, and it is pretty affordable to fill up the tank (roughly $35-40). Volkswagen will charge you for every single penny they can, so be careful when entering a dealership to buy a car!
accountCircle Melissa L
Poor parts and overcharged repairs.
I have always wanted a VW Jetta because of it is body style. But because of all the problems that I have encountered with both Jettas, I will not buy nor recommend a VW to anyone else. They do not make them with quality parts. They make them so that no one else can repair them. They charge too much for maintenance and repair. They say that they upcharge because they have to pay for educating their techs. My check engine light shouldn't be causing me any problems at 60,000 miles.

What Do Critics Say About the VW Jetta?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Jetta offers improvements over earlier years with decent owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Jetta at 4.3/5, praising the spacious cabin, but they wish it had more horsepower for the GLI model.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Jetta a 4.4/5, enjoying the sporty handling, but owners don’t like the lack of all-wheel-drive.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 VW Jetta include rodents destroying the soy-based wiring, wheel speed sensor failures, as well as squeaking doors. Overall, these problems are similar to other compact cars from 2017, although repair costs are higher since parts are more expensive.

Rodents destroying the soy-based wiring is the most expensive problem reported by owners in the first 20,000 miles. Volkswagen and many other brands have moved to use a more environmentally friendly wire coating, which unfortunately attracts rodents. Repairing the wiring can cost $50 to $2,000, depending on how damaged it gets. We recommend using battery-operated small strobe lights in the engine compartment to deter rodents.

Wheel speed sensor failures show up on some Jetta models at around 25,000 miles. The sensor simply wears out as the car gets older, and has to be replaced. Changing out the sensor costs around $550, depending on local labor rates.

Squeaking doors are another complaint from some Jetta owners at around 10,000 miles. When the door hinges are out of alignment, they may squeak. Re-aligning the door hinges is a fairly easy process which can be done for under $50 by most dealerships.

There are 7 recalls on the 2017 Jetta, which is more than many other compact cars from the same year. The most serious recall covers the fuel rail bolts, which can loosen, allowing fuel lines to leak. VW will replace the bolts as necessary on affected models. Many of the other recalls cover more minor issues, such as labels around the car.

How Long Will the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Volkswagen Jetta lasts around 250,000 miles, which is around 50,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than other compact cars, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $441 per year.

As a 2017 VW Jetta reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the fuel EVAP canister for $400, heater hoses costing $700, as well as the oil cooler, which costs nearly $800.

accountCircle Ranee C

Yes, it is reliable. We have owned it for two years and have not had any problems. We get the oil changed as scheduled and have the tires rotated. Beyond that we have not incurred any additional repair expenses.

accountCircle Arianna S

It is very reliable. The only problem that I have is the tire light keeps pooping on but now I know I have to reset it.

accountCircle Tracy W

Yes it is reliable I have never had any problems. It never lets me down. I have bumper to bumper warranty.

accountCircle Olivia S

It is very reliable. There are no problems, except when I first purchased the car there was a headlight out, but the dealership repaired it for free.

accountCircle Jessica P

Yes it is reliable. And not that I have had so far, I have been driving it for 3 years and no problems so far!

accountCircle Jack P

My Jetta is ultra reliable and I have never had a problem with it, even on icy roads in Midwestern winters.

accountCircle Haley S

So far I have not encountered any problems with this vehicle, however it is still fairly new to me. It does make a whining sound in the summer and my mechanic told me it is just because of the heat and it is not something wrong with the car itself, just need to try to park in the shade when possible.

accountCircle Michael V

No problems at all so far. It has good gas mileage and handles very well in winter driving conditions.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good in the 2017 VW Jetta with a standard 5-inch touchscreen stereo system. A larger 6.3-inch touchscreen is available as an option. Safety technology is also good, offering a standard rearview camera. Optional safety tech upgrades include adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta a Good Value?

Yes, the 2017 VW Jetta is a good value since they offer a nice interior parried with dependable German engineering. Blue book prices range from $14,000 to $18,700, making it cheaper than compact sedan choices like the Honda Civic or Mazda3. When new, the price range was $17,895 to $28,995. Depreciation is similar to other compact cars, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the VW Jetta?

There are four models of the Jetta offered in 2017, from the base S up to the sportier GLI.

What Engines Come In the VW Jetta?

  • An available upgrade is the stronger 1.8L 4-cylinder which produces 170 horsepower at up to 29 MPG. This comes only with a six-speed automatic transmission.
  • On the GLI model is a more powerful 2.0L 4-cylinder which generates 210 horsepower while getting up to 27 MPG. There’s a standard six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional. Performance is good, taking around 7 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the VW Jetta Come In?

How Comfortable Is the VW Jetta?

The 2017 VW Jetta is a very comfortable compact car, offering seating for up to 5 passengers. Seating is very nice, offering materials that are both durable and luxurious while also being supportive for longer drives paired with heated seats.

Passenger room is better than many other compact cars since there is enough space in the backseats to easily fit taller adults.

How Much Storage Space Does the VW Jetta Have?

Cargo space is great in the trunk of the Jetta, offering enough room to fit 3-4 full size suitcases, and a bit more with the available split-fold rear seats.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The sixth generation of the VW Jetta came out in 2011, and was replaced by the seventh generation in 2019.

2015: Minor exterior styling changes, upgraded interior quality, as well as a more efficient diesel engine.

2016: New entry-level engine, standard touchscreen stereo system, and diesel engine removed for diesel-gate.

2017: Standard rearview camera on all models, USB added to the stereo system.

2018: New wheel choices available, Wolfsburg edition model added.

2019: Fully redesigned for the seventh generation with new engines, technology, and styling.

2020: Car-Net telecommunications systems standard, wireless charging added, 6-speed manual offered on R-Line.

2021: Upgraded stereo system on SEL and higher models.

How Does the VW Jetta Compare to the Competition?

The Volkswagen Jetta is one of the best compact sedans offered in 2017 since it’s reliable with excellent German build quality, making it a great choice.

The Volkswagen Passat is a larger sedan offered by Volkswagen which is around $1,500 more. Passenger room is better in the Volkswagen Passat, while the Volkswagen Jetta offers more nimble steering. We recommend the Volkswagen Jetta for most buyers, unless you need the extra room found in the Passat.

The Honda Civic is another compact car which costs about $2,200 more. Performance is better in the Honda Civic, while the overall build-quality and interior materials are nicer in the Volkswagen Jetta. We recommend the Honda Civic for many shoppers since they have lower ownership costs, however, both are excellent choices.

2017 VW Jetta Wolfsburg addition
This is the best car I have ever owned, ( from Cadilac to Audi) Currently 280,000 on the odometer, never had to change the brake pads, Highway driven gets 850KM to a full tank, well maintained, changed the spark plugs, coils, and timing belt at 200,000. Still looks like new, I hate the cloth seats, they get d***y quickly, cheap radio. Use only quality synthetic oil and OEM filters.

Lots of trunk space and extremely reliable.
I love my Jetta, I definitely haven’t had any problems, and keep up on regular maintenance. The reason I would rate 4 instead of 5 stars is based for on features. I hate the lack of sunroof, that a lot of companies put standard in vehicles now. I also hate the grey seats as anything that touches them will stain them. It drives great and other than arthritis it is a wonderful vehicle for anybody.

High fuel numbers, reliable (@31k) and fun to drive!!
Summer of 2017, we plunked down the truly great price of $14.3 (OTDD) and never looked back. My wife stalled it on the test drive (she's used to an automatic MB coupe) but this car has surprised us with its' smooth clutch engagement point, easy 5M shifting and high fun to drive co-efficient. Trunk (15.7 feet cubed) is a cavernous asset. At under 3000 lbs with 205 tires installed no one comes close when accelerating into and out of a circular freeway on ramp. No issues to date. About the only negative is that while the selling dealer has a really competitive sales department - - - the service department ain't too competitive.............

This is a super reliable, and safe vehicle. On the road it drives very smoothly and comes with many awesome features that better help your safe driving on the road. I love the VW Jetta but the model we have has no pickup but that's no fault of the car. We have a 4 cylinder. The interior is beautiful and the dashboard is nice when it's lit up at night. The Jetta was purchased as my daughters first car, it's compact and reliable.

My Jetta!! My Jetta has a sunroof which can be opened easily to see the stars.
We purchased 2 Volkswagen Jettas in 2017. We were able to pay cash for both vehicles which included extended warranties on both. These cars get great gas mileage and have been very reliable cars. Only minor and wear and tear issues have been noted. We have had an air conditioner problem with one car, but it was covered by the extended warranty. Otherwise no problems have occurred.

2017 Jetta se 1.4 liter tsi.
I have had only 1 problem, my engine light came on, then I got it fixed, just a computer reset, then after that I have a faulty blind side sensor and haven't got it fixed yet. Other than that great car, has sports mode, gets about 39 highway, went to Virginia Beach and back which was about 400 miles filled up once.

It is a good quality car and doesn't feel cheap or like its made of plastic.
I like that it is affordable and doesn't feel cheap.

It has a very high safety rating and very smooth ride.
No complaints. Rides beautifully and smooth and I feel very safe in the car. The car has many good features including a sunroof. I love the blue color I chose.

It is an amazing starting car.

Good commuter with good gas mileage.
Good commuter vehicle does well with gas mileage. Always a nice looking car with no mechanical issues so far. Only complaint for me is the cloth interior would rather have leather or a easier to clean surface as the seats can look stained at times. Also wish I would have got something with a bit more power but still gets the job done.

Volkswagen Jetta review of features that always make it a safe and smooth ride!
This vehicle has countless safety features to help ensure a safe ride every time. The lights are automatic so no need to worry about leaving them one. The gas mileage is very good so money spent on filling up the tank is not excessive. The size is comfortable for most people and fits into small spaces easily. The ride is very smooth and has good wheel control and acceleration. There is also a sport mode which helps accelerate even faster if needed. Being a German car can have its issues though if one of to end up being in a collision of some sort because the parts to be ordered can sometimes be more expensive than other cars and can take longer to fix. In general this is a very safe and good car though highly recommend!

The best part about my Jetta is that it is a very fast car but also super safe.
I love my Jetta because it is a very reliable car. The gas mileage is amazing and it is a very spacious car. The interior is also very nice and plenty of room in the trunk as well! I drive a standard Jetta and the gears shift very smoothly. The sound system is also incredible because it has really good bass.

It has great handling and plenty of space. It is such a great car.
I love the Jetta. It is such a great size car. Plenty of cabin space and comfortable seating. The trunk is way more room than you would thing. Downfall I have is that there is no fold down cup holders in the back seat. The only problem I have had with the car is that the ac stopped working and had to get it replaced.

The most important aspect is that it is such a reliable vehicle, there is never a time I worry that it won't get me where I need to go.
I love the Volkswagen Jetta models! The car I drive is a 2017 and I love how comfortable it is. There are lots of controls, which is convenient. It starts up with no hesitation and runs like a dream; would highly recommend!

Perfect commuter car at a good price.
No problems with the car to date and it has over 70,000 miles on it. Overall has been a nice car. Gets good mileage around 40 mpg with the type of driving I do. Trim level is perfect. Leather seats, touch screen interface and power everything. I have a manual which I enjoy but it might not be for everyone.

The Jetta is a great value for the quality.
This car is a great example of solid German engineering. It has a very functional interior, stylish and comfortable, whilst giving the driver and passengers plenty of modern conveniences. The sound system is great, the seats are heated, has blind spot assist.

Emergency kit provided has everything you'll ever need. Roadside service.
It gets great gas mileage, seats are not comfortable for long trips. Lighter interior is not the best option with children under 10. Trunk space is amazing. Roomy back seat. No flip down cup holder in back seat. Servicing is very pricey. Oil change is about $100.

Black Volkswagen Jetta review 2019.
I enjoy driving my Jetta. It has a lot of path and the seats are very comfortable. I have had issues with the coolant in the oil cooler though. Other than the one issue with the coolant in the oil cooler everything else is been fine and I would recommend driving the Jetta.

Heated seats also sporty but safe.
Super comfortable and fun, sporty but safe. Good gas mileage an amazing first car. Got it used and it was in amazing condition. I would recommend a Volkswagen Jetta to anyone. All the technology in it is amazing. It is wonderful to have apple carplay and Bluetooth.

Good vehicle with comfort and great mileage.
The vehicle has great mileage. One of few manufacturers to offer manual transmission in sedans. Love the hands free capabilities and the comfort of the vehicle. Had a battery issue with battery becoming bad but vehicle wise great coverage of no issues.

It gets good highway mileage and has a lot of space in the trunk.
I like the iPhone integration. The ceiling is too low and the car can s**k Gas occasion.

Happy customer. Would buy it again. . .
I don't really have problems with my car. I am happy wit it. The only thing I can think is that it is a little small for a family of 5.

VW Jetta not worth the money.
I bought the vehicle new and I had issues immediately with the back drivers side window not working properly. Since it wasn't covered under the manufacturer warranty, I had to pay out of pocket. It has a check engine light and tire pressure light that will not turn off. I have spent tons of money trying to get it turned off. The mirror link for your hands free hookup works when it wants to work. Besides the bad, it gets great gas mileage. I do not have to change the oil for 7500-10000 miles, which saves on money. It is kind of comfortable but not for long trips. Overall okay commuter car. I will not be purchasing a VW again due to all the issues I have with the vehicle.
