2019 Volkswagen Jetta Review: Unreliable Small Sedan With High Repair Costs

Alex Showalter
Jan 20, 2023

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta lasts around 150,000 miles with some serious transmission and engine issues reported. At $16,950 to $25,225, it’s too expensive for a small car with a lot of mechanical problems showing up as they age.

likeFilled The Good
The suspension is smooth, the seats are more comfortable than the competition and the stereo system is great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Repair costs are higher than other small sedans, the steering is not responsive and the brakes feel mushy.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2019 is a bad year for the Volkswagen Jetta since there are transmission problems reported, giving it a lower overall score. Owner reviews complain about expensive repair bills, cheap plastic buttons on the dash, along with oil issues.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are luxurious for a small sedan, the seats are very supportive for longer trips, cargo space is also great in the trunk.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are reports of transmission & engine problems on the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. Avoid models from 2019, while 20122018 & 2020-2022 are more reliable years.
  • Performance 8/10 – The base Jetta model is similar to other sedans, while the turbocharged four-cylinder in the GLI is relatively quick.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2019 Jetta is a safe car, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, along with forward collision warning.
  • Gas Mileage 9/10 – Fuel economy is great at up to 34 MPG, giving 448 miles of range from the 13.2 gallon tank. Gas costs are $58 cheaper than average at $124 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is affordable for a German car, although there are some costly problems which lower its overall value score.

2019 is the best year yet for Volkswagen. Time for a test drive.
Car is a beautiful color. I drove it to myrtle beach and only had to fill it once. The blind side detection is awesome in traffic. You can hook your phone so you can enjoy your apps. It takes a while to get used to but the feature where the engine stops when you are at a traffic light or just stopped to save gas is really neat. Crash detection has saved me a few times. The only thing I do not like is when its very windy the door lights shake and is annoying.

Had leather and heated seats and steering wheel.
Has sports mode, can manually change gears, is automatic though, has know issues of transmission oil leaking, never had an issues with it, is genuinely the best vehicle over ever owned and would never trade it in. Good family car, bug trunk, seats 4 comfortably but can fit 5. Good for dog car rides.

In love with this car
We purchased this car as a demo with 22,000 kms on it. Still got the warranty and have no problems. We recently took it on a trip up north And only had to put it 39 liters for a 769km drive. I think 40 mpg is an understatement!!! We have a very comfortable drive and enjoyed the entire trip. We originally wanted the tiguan but glad we decided on this vehicle!!! Keep up the great work volkswagen!!!

Easy to use car. Excellent gas mileage. Super neat features.
It runs great! I have not had any problems that needed repairs the entire time I have owned the car. It receives excellent gas mileage. The settings are simple and easy to use. It comes with apple CarPlay. It comes with many neat safety features. The trunk is very spacious; perfect for vacations.

Best Volkswagen to get would be the Jetta. It is amazing if you have a family.
This Jetta is absolutely amazing on gas, super good on the breaks and amazing technology inside the vehicle. I love that the car stops as you stop so it saves you some gas when stopped. I also love that my car has a backup camera for reversing or parking. It also has a gorgeous panoramic sunroof on top.

I like that the car for being a base model comes with rear view protection.
This is my second Jetta. I like Volkswagen because it is German engineering, at a great affordable price. The gas is great! Performance and reliability is great. I will stick with this brand I have no complaints. The base models comes with a lot of gadgets.

Great style, fun to drive, definitely a driver’s car.
The Jetta r-line is extremely fun to drive. Volkswagen had the driver in mind when restyling the interior for the more recent model years. The outside is reminiscent of an Audi and the inside feels like a cockpit with the way the touchscreen is angled towards the driver. Using the sport mode really gives the engine a little extra pep when you need it.

Sporty, affordable, clean.
My Jetta gets great gas mileage. It is small and sporty. It has a lot of get up and go, and is more affordable than what I am used to driving. The entertainment system is awesome, and it has cool lighting that you can change to fit your personality. I highly recommend this car.

Problems
I started hearing a harsh growling/grinding/whistling noise almost immediately after buying the car, and it has only been getting louder since. I am apparently waiting for a software update to fix the problem (the transmission clutches do not engage/disengage at the right time). I'm not happy with the service that I've been receiving from VW. OH, and there is no windshield wiper fluid warning light.. So make sure you carry extra fluid with you at all times. Other than that, it is a beautiful car.

Transmission problem... Don’t buy vehicle
VW Group of American declines to cover transmisión noise as part of warranty. Please don’t invest on a NEW 2019 Jetta because you are purchasing a defective transmission that will not be cover by 7 year/ 72k warranty. I regret falling for deceptive warranty.

Less than stellar
I like the exterior look, but I hate how cheap the interior appears. Everything is plastic and a cheap-looking plastic at that. Volkswagon is so focused on making sure the car is light, it made everything out of plastic. Even the spare tire is no longer in the car

2019 Jetta being sold with known transmission problems
Maybe not everyone is experiencing the defect with the 2019 VW Jetta but very quickly after buying mine, i found out the transmission is unbalanced and causes shuttering, rough shifting and grinding noises. Apparently VW knew about this issue but continues to sell the cars at full price with no fix in sight. They say there's an open recall for the transmission being unbalanced but they are unable to fix it. I think it's wrong for them to sell a brand new car with known issues at full price. Thanks for the $30,000 headache VW

What Do Critics Say About the VW Jetta?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 VW Jetta has a responsive engine with straightforward controls, and average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Jetta at 3.9/5, praising the comfortable ride quality, but doesn’t like the brakes which feel grabby.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Jetta a 4.2/5, enjoying the upgraded technology, but owners don’t like the shorter warranty than some competitors.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta include grinding noises from the transmission, excessive oil consumption, as well as worn-out front sensors. Overall, these problems are worse than some other small sedans on the market, leading to higher repair bills.

Grinding noises from the transmission are the most widespread complaint from 2019 Jetta owners at around 5,000 miles. The eight-speed automatic transmission has serious problems which lead to total failures. Usually transmission failures happen early enough in the ownership experience to be covered under warranty. Out of warranty, a transmission replacement costs over $3,500.

Excessive oil consumption is another issue mentioned by Jetta owners at around 20,000 miles. Often excessive oil consumption is normal for a Volkswagen, and it just needs to be checked and topped off regularly. Some owners had various seals throughout the engine replaced, costing around $1,500.

Worn-out front sensors have also been reported on the Jetta in the first 10,000 miles. The sensors at the front control many of the advanced safety features, and simply wear out and get damaged. Replacing the sensors costs around $400, depending on local labor rates.

There are eight recalls on the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta, which is more than many other small sedans. The most serious recalls cover the rear coil springs, which can fracture and increase the risk of an accident. Other recalls cover air bags, as well as tire issues which are more common on all makes and models.

How Long Will the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Volkswagen Jetta can last around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as the very dependable Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than other small sedans, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $444 per year.

As a used 2019 VW Jetta reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the camshaft position sensor for $250, engine front cover gasket costing $500, as well as the stabilizer bar link which costs $150.

accountCircle Andrea H

It is reliable, only had to take it in for a recall and you are required to change the oil every 10000 miles.

accountCircle Nick S

For the most part it has been very reliable. It only has a few thousand miles on it so I cannot say for sure if it will be a long lasting vehicle.

accountCircle Arturo M

Yes the Jetta is very reliable it is get you from point a to point b with no problem. And the drive is really smooth.

accountCircle Rebecca C

It's reliable, however the tranny makes a grinding noise. I don't have anything else to say but it's making me type more things.

accountCircle Anna D

My 2019 Jetta is reliable. My 2019 Jetta has not had any issues at all. Dependable. Reliable. Trust.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Available upgrades include more powerful stereo systems as well as a larger 8-inch touchscreen.

Safety technology is very good with a standard rearview camera. Optional advanced safety features include automatic high-beam headlights, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, as well as lane departure warning.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta a Good Value?

No, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is not a good value since there are some mechanical issues reported which can be expensive to fix. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $16,950 to $25,225, making it similar to a Honda Civic or Mazda3. When new, the price range was $18,745 to $29,995. Depreciation is similar to other sedans, losing about 8% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the VW Jetta?

  • The base engine is an average 1.4L 4-cylinder which makes 147 horsepower at up to 34 MPG. It comes standard with either a six-speed manual transmission or eight-speed automatic transmission.
  • An available upgrade on the GLI model is a stronger 2.0L 4-cylinder which produces 228 horsepower while getting 28 MPG. This engine has either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Performance is good, taking only 5.6 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the VW Jetta Come In?

How Comfortable Is the VW Jetta?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is a comfortable car, with enough room for five passengers. The car’s suspension system does a good job of absorbing bumps in the road, which helps to provide a comfortable ride for passengers.

The car’s seats are also well-padded and offer good support, making them comfortable for long trips. The front seats are also heated, and some models are available with a power driver’s seat, which can be adjusted to a wide range of positions for added comfort.

The 2019 Jetta also has a spacious interior, which offers plenty of legroom and headroom for both front and rear passengers. The car’s cabin is also quiet, thanks in part to using sound-deadening materials.

How Much Storage Space Does the VW Jetta Have?

The storage space in the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is good for a sedan. The trunk of the 2019 Jetta typically has a storage capacity of 14.1 cubic feet. This should be enough space to hold several pieces of luggage or a lot of bags of groceries. In addition to the trunk, the Jetta also has a lot of other storage compartments throughout the cabin, such as door pockets and a center console, which can be used to store smaller items.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The seventh generation of the Volkswagen Jetta was introduced for the 2019 model year.

2015: Improved interior quality and minor exterior styling changes.

2016: Standard touchscreen stereo system, new entry-level engine, diesel engine gone for this year.

2017: USB port added to the stereo system, standard rearview camera on all models.

2018: New wheel choices offered, Wolfsburg Edition model added to the lineup.

2019: Fully redesigned for the seventh generation with new technology, engines, and styling.

2020: Wireless charging added, standard Car-Net telecommunications system, six-speed manual on R-Line model.

2021: Improved stereo system on the SEL and higher models

How Does the VW Jetta Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is a bad compact car for the 2019 model year since there are more engine and transmission problems than other small sedans, making it a year to avoid.

The Volkswagen Passat is another sedan offered by VW, which costs about $2,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Volkswagen Passat, while the Volkswagen Jetta offers a sportier driving experience. We recommend the Volkswagen Passat for 2019 since they are a more reliable choice worth the extra money.

The Honda Civic is another compact sedan, which is about $1,500 more. Standard technology is better in the Honda Civic, while the Volkswagen Jetta has a nicer interior for the money. We recommend the Honda Civic since they have lower ownership costs and much higher reliability ratings as they age.

Transmission failure
2019 Jetta six speed manual bought new and meticulously serviced- suffered a total transmission failure while in highway driving - suddenly and unexpected loss of power and inability to shift, clutch to the floor. After an expensive tow to the nearest VW dealer some 40 miles away and far from home, they claimed the clutch , flywheel, slave cylinder and adjacent alternator were shot and had to be replaced and to top it off, declined to do the repair under warranty. This resulted in 3400 dollars in out of pocket repairs because they claimed 'outside influence' as the cause. No transmission suddenly fails like that, for a three year old car at 48k miles. Our prior car, a 20 plus year old five speed manual ford was still driving great on its original clutch at 160k plus miles. Appealing for VW to honor its warranty, VW Corporate stood by their dealers assertion it was not a defect, againt all sense, logic, and fairness. We will have to escalate this and highlight the safety and unfair trade practices of VW. Its a shame because until this occurred, the car was a joy to drive and had been reliable for its first three years on the road. It was meticulously serviced by vw to its maintenance schedule as well.

This has been an awesome car. 192,000 so far. My 1st set if brakes was rear pads at 167,000 and the fronts at 184,000 have not put anything else into this car but oil changes, and tires. Also get 45 mpg no complaints with this car at all. Dealer repairs or even oil changes are out of control, and there crooks. Told me my car needed brakes, only i just had them done 2 weeks earlier at another dealer. Crooks

Uses oil
My 2019 jetta had only ever had the oil changed at the dealership. Since this model uses more oil than normal I was always having to check it but it still ended up with metal in the oil and was told it needed anew motor. This vehicle had only 87000 miles and should not have needed a new motor. Was not satisfied at all with it and was wishing I had kept my 2016 passat.

The only problem I have, is the break and gas are overly sensitive. The gear shift will easily shift into other gears, so watch out for that. I know VW's don't have spare tires, but this should be changed! Other than that, there is no other problems with the car.

My 2019 blue Volkswagen Jetta.
My 2019 Volkswagen Jetta gets great gas mileage, drives great and is super reliable. My one complaint is that the pickup is very spotty and jagged. It struggles to pick up speed after being stopped. The start-stop feature is also slightly annoying and automatic, so you have to turn it off.

Never worry about backing out again!
I really enjoy my 2019 Jetta. The addition of a turbo make this a decently fun car to drive. The rear cross traffic alert is one of my favorite features. It is saved me more than once! Also the blind spot monitor is super helpful especially when merging. Having the full led headlights and taillights are so fantastic. The headlights light up more than enough without completely blinding others on the road. The only drawback with this car is the gearbox. Since it is a small engine and they gave it 8 gears it struggles to accelerate and decelerate smoothly. It is just a few too many gears for a car with such little power. Sometimes it feels like the car is choking on it is own gears. Also the ac does make a significant impact on your gas mileage as well as accelerating. When you have the ac on and you want to hurry and get in front of someone you must put the car in sport for it to have a descent response time.

I have been having my Volkswagen Jetta for almost a year now and I can say I absolutely love it. To begin with, it only cost me about $26 at the most to fill up my tank but most times only $20. That full tank will last for about a week and a half which is not bad for $20. The features on the car are a plus including start/ stop feature and eco gas mode. The car also comes with sensors. VW Jetta r-line best car I have ever owned and at 65 I have had many different cars!
My VW r-line Jetta provides a smooth ride. Heated seats are a great plus during those cold days. Climate control means that I do not have to adjust settings each time I start the car. The fact it has a sunroof is refreshing and less noisy then rolling down a window. The ability to unlock the car by just having the keys on me, and slip my hand into the door handle helps when you can juggle everything to dig the keys out of your pocket or purse. To lock, just a finger touch in the right spot of the door handle. The seats adjust smoothly, both back and forwards or to raise or lower the seat for that perfect comfort for driving. Took it on a trip and great gas mileage, comfy seats while driving is a huge plus!

Sleek and sporty with room for the family. Great mpg.
This vehicle provides ample space with its four doors and large truck. It has enough storage for all the little things. Comfortably fit into 5 people. The vehicle performs very well with its average mpg at 38 highway. The only performance issue is no matter what the breaks always make noise when it is cold out. In my research this is due to the type of brake pads used by VW on their cars.

My VW Jetta is classy and exceptional.
I love my Jetta! It is very simple to operate, but very classy and high performance. The touch screen with CarPlay and GPS is a super great feature! I have the black color, and people often mistake it for a Mercedes. The inside is spacious, and the trunk is huge! My favorite part about the car is the digital dashboard which displays my speed. There are also detectors to tell me if I can switch lanes as an added safety feature.

Reliable Jetta for everyday usage.
We love the style and comfort that the Jetta brings. Super trustworthy on its driving guide and is very compatible with waze google and apple maps. The r line has more space since we had our baby last year so more storage for strollers and baby stuff.

The Jetta is the perfect family car.
I was pregnant when I got my Jetta, so my husband’s and my top priority was safety and reliability. This car has been wonderful! We've had one problem, which was the entertainment system overheated (it was a very hot day and it is an all black car), however we got it fixed the next day and it is been perfect ever since! My family loves this car, and the car seat attachments are very easy to use. I would recommend this car to anyone, especially new family’s like ourselves!

Constant issues with my Volkswagen Jetta.
My windshield wipers rarely work smoothly, and whenever I took it to a Volkswagen dealership, they told me they were fine. However, the wipers are not fine and make loud and cringeworthy noises, even when it is pouring rain. There are also constant recalls on the car and my air conditioner wasn’t working properly.

The color, interior and drive of my Jetta gives me heart eyes.
I love the appearance. Silver/white paint & black/white leather interior. Car runs well and is reliable. It has taken many long hauls on i 70. Comfortable and sporty. I live in a snowy state and do not love driving it in the snow. I am also a female so it can handle come curb checks.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta, great gas mileage, speed, and price.
Great gas mileage. I regularly get 40+ mpg. The Jetta also has good acceleration both from a stop and while at highway speeds. It does have apple carplay but the car play does struggle to work at times (not sure if this is a problem with the phone, USB cable, or the input into the car). Overall it is a very solid car for someone looking for an affordable imported sedan.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta, likes and dislikes.
The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta I drive is really good on gas. It takes up to 345 miles of gas, I really like how on the screen it will show you how many more miles you can go until you have to fuel up again. I love the way it runs, really smooth, I have only taken it in once since I got it and it does not give me any problems. It is about to for another maintenance check but if you treat it good obviously you'll get good stuff out of it. I love the seats, the driver's seat has a feature where it pushes you up if you are a little shorter, it works very well for my sister. The only thing I do not like it that it has no air vents in the back. Lucky for me I only use it to work and back, but I have had my siblings tell me there is no air and they cannot feel any air back there. I am now expecting a baby and my goal is to get a new car with a/c in the back I do not want my baby to be hot!

Jetta sel 2019 interior thoughts.
I like the updated look of the interior, it slants towards the driver creating a cockpit feel. It does feel masculine somehow. The customizable ambient lighting is a neat feature, too. I do wish it was also under the passenger in the footwell. I would recommend getting the truck cargo block insert. I have found it very hard for groceries and it is helped secure fragile items in the trunk for transport.

Great car for young driver.
The car is very light and I do not always feel safe especially on the highway when cars drive by at a high speed and the car shakes. It also is very slow to “pick up” when trying to make quick lane change. I also am disappointed with the entertainment package. Sound quality can be much better.

Lovingness of the VW Jetta 2019.
Love that it turns off when stopped for a while, saving gas. Runs very smoothly. Good speakers. Nothing wrong with.Very nice interior, love the exterior look or it. Heated seats and a sunroof.Very roomy doesn't feel claustrophobic. I got remote start with mine and I absolutely love it.

Surprise trips to the dealership.
The car is really nice looking from the outside and also the inside. It drives fairly nice but the engine is a little small for my taste. Also the car has had multiple recalls which made me take time out of my day to go to the dealership and get them resolved. The battery also went out at about 37,000 miles which was a bummer because it was out of warranty.

It is a great and eco friendly car. Perfect for the average joe.
Performs great. It takes a second to be able to unlock the passenger seats with the key fob. It takes a bit to get up to speed but otherwise wonderful. Eco mode is a fantastic feature. It is very comfortable. It has Bluetooth capabilities. Nothing crazy but very reliable.

The safety features are the greatest.
Very good gas mileage, has many safety features. One is the side view mirrors have a warning when move over into another lane. Also has a rear view camera when backing up and will automatically stop the car if you get too close to another vehicle. Has i-car auto-play for entering your cell phone to receive calls.

Jetta's have so many hidden and unique features that I am still finding more!
At first, there was a minor issue with a wiring harness, but the dealership handled it professionally! They were also able to handle it with speed and accuracy. Other than that, I have had no problems! The Jetta's are very well put together. They are very sporting and also have a sort of style that sets them apart from most other cars!

Red stick shift. Great choice.
Very good on fuel, somewhat fun to drive in a stick shift. Excellent features. Good design. Could do better on some of the gear switching. Sometimes weird belt lights come on and go off. Stereo needs to be reset every month because CarPlay stops working.

Heated wheels and safety features.
The Volkswagen is perfect for me. It saves a lot of gas, does not really use that much. They have heated seats and heated wheels, this is the first time I own a car with a heated wheel. There is a lot of safety features, like the blind spot mirrors, that makes driving easier and safer.

Decent car with possible future maintenance issues.
The car drives really nice since it is heavy and feels planted to the ground. The only complaints I truly have is that not even 3 months after buying the car brand new, it started having problems with the cabin filter and with the oil... You would hope to not have to inspect a brand new car.

Cloud on wheels. Comfortable, smooth and reliable,
Leather seats, it is a smooth drive. Comfortable ride. No noise on engine great gas saver. Great for small families or single people. Tires last longer than a year. Some cars do have issues with their airbags but mine is a great ride, no issues whatsoever.

Love it all and would buy again.
Love the sound system in the Jetta. I drove several cars that were similar size and by far the Jetta has the smoothest ride. The seats are very comfortable and the steering wheel can be adjusted in multiple directions. I have had no issues with the performance of the car. The heated seats are a plus in the winter time. The gas mileage is also really good on the car. I had a Toyota Camry before the Jetta and would buy the Jetta again.

Jetta! Very sleek design!
With my vehicle I have experienced all amazing things. It has amazing gas mileage. There are so many features in the car that makes it that much safer. Indicator lights in both side mirrors, it beeps loudly if you are approaching another car too fast, and it shows you when you are too close to other cars. The backup cam is my favorite! I love the heated steering wheel and seats (as do my children on cold mornings!!).

My car is reliable and fun.
I have a brand new car. It has only ever been owned by me and has no issues. The car gets great gas mileage and has excellent acceleration and breaking. It comes with a decent sound system and a 12 inch touch screen which I love. The car also has an eco mode which reduces pollution and saves gas.
accountCircle Karla R on March 18, 2021
Overpriced and lower quality than previous years.
The 2019 Jetta is cheaply made. I do not feel like it would keep me very safe from serious physical injuries in the event of a collision. It even feels lightweight when driving it. The rear view camera comes standard. Has a system that alerts you when there's another car getting too close to avoid collision on either side, front, or back with small icons on the rear view mirrors that light up as a very faint orange that does not catch the eye's at all and neither is the beep that sounds off along with it because it can barely be heard. The sound system is decent but there's no satellite radio or GPS hardware included. I think it is way overpriced for what such low quality. Had a 2006 model prior to this one and was slightly better. And before that a 2014. The 2013 was an incredible vehicle.
