2016 Subaru Forester Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

Save for a new touchscreen interface with more responsive controls, the Subaru Forester moves into 2016 unchanged. With its roomy interior and available turbocharged engine, the 2016 Subaru Forester deserves a spot on your small crossover SUV shopping list.

The small crossover SUV category is intensely competitive, and it's one in which the 2016 Subaru Forester holds its own quite well. Along with the sure-footedness of standard all-wheel drive, the Forester delivers plenty of cargo capacity, roomy seating and an available turbocharged engine that's one of the strongest in its class. There's nothing super flashy about this crossover, but Subaru is a believer in offering functional simplicity. That's precisely what you get with the 2016 Forester. The 2016 Subaru Forester is as comfortable in the desert as it is on the highway, thanks to standard all-wheel drive and generous ground clearance. Safety and fuel economy are key attributes for the small crossover class, and the Forester delivers here, too. Though blind-spot monitoring is curiously missing from the Forester's features list, it does offer an available forward collision mitigation system plus perfect crash-test scores. As for fuel efficiency, the Forester's continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a big help, especially when cruising on the highway. But even models with the six-speed manual -- a rare treat in this class -- can hold their heads high when it's time to fill up. If there's one real drawback to the 2016 Subaru Forester, it's that it doesn't do a whole lot beyond the rational to woo you. Shoppers seeking classier interiors or more engaging on-road manners may find the 2016 Ford Escape and 2016 Mazda CX-5 more to their liking, while the 2016 Hyundai Tucson provides more visual panache. For outdoor recreation enthusiasts, the off-road-tuned Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is worth a hard look. Then there are the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, which remain tough to beat for all-around competence. Comparison shopping is definitely a must in the small crossover SUV category, but overall we're confident that the 2016 Subaru Forester deserves a spot on your list.

Do you need a crossover that can handle whatever life throws at it? The Subaru Forester delivers with standard all-wheel drive, a roomy interior and plenty of ground clearance for off-road excursions. You can even add a turbocharged engine, or stick with the base engine for better fuel economy. Let's take a look at the Forester's full range of talents.

The 2016 Subaru Forester receives a new touchscreen-based technology interface, with the base 2.5i trim level providing a standard 6.2-inch screen and the other trims boasting a 7-inch version that includes enhanced features.

Can you adapt to a Subaru

If you have long legs, the driver's seat will stay back a lot. An Adult might not be comfortable sitting behind you. There is a downward dip when you get into the car, so when you go to get out you have to remind yourself to lift up your leg or you'll trip when getting out. Sometimes the Bluetooth won't work like it should, the steering wheel will stick a little after making a hard turn and it has a limit to how high it will tilt up. I am still adapting to all the different controls. Only the drivers window will go all the way up at the touch of the button. You have to hold the button for the other 3 windows to make them go all the way up or down. The usb port and a second car adapter plug in site are hidden in the storage box located between the front seats. I had to downsize my cargo holder. Banks still love the resale value of a Subaru, so getting a loan was a little easier. Since I am still adapting to this Subaru, I honestly can't rate everything about it yet. I will say the Subaru service center is Great! Since I brought the Subaru from a Ford dealership, they did an inspection to look for any issues that would need to be addressed.

Love my XT!

I have purchased 2 Subaru Forester XTs now. I love most everything about them, and hope to keep the newest 2016 for years. The biggest downfalls I have found are the lack of rear air, slow AC cooling, and not very family friendly with babies. Although the car is very safe, the lack of rear air is a huge problem. My 7 month old baby is unable to get cooled off quickly due to his large rear facing car seat blocking the middle vents from reaching him. His car seat has also taken up the majority of the back seat, which has made me consider buying a larger vehicle. His stroller takes up the majority of the trunk area. Although I would love to keep the car for years, it may not be possible.

Great car to drive, very user friendly. Simple, all wheel drive is second to none. I purchased a car from East Hills Subaru my salesman name was James Hoppe, very helpful and understanding. Took the time to show me the car.

Disapointed

I was impressed by the reviews i read. I have owned Toyotas and Hondas and always was happy with most of the features in those vehicles. The front seat of my Forester is very uncomfortable. There is a wire in the seat and a metal bar below it. They create pressure on your bum and this is very uncomfortable after 30 minutes of driving. unbearable after 2 hours. The narrow center section is lower then the sides. They press on the side of your leg. I spent over $300 trying to find a cushion to make it bearable. My wife want's to sell the car after 6 months. I have finally made a cushion which is acceptable. Other things I don't like: there are two volume controls. on the dash, you must hold your fingers away from the touch screen or the station changes when you rotate your hand. The volume control on the wheel is very touchy. if you don't press exactly in the center you change the station when you change the volume. There is not a light in the cargo area. Don't try to see anything in the dark. The AC is inadequate on hot days. The heat is inadequate on cold days. The brakes are just ok. I fear they will be inadequate when they have more wear. My brother has a forester a few years older then my 2016. The dealer want's $1000 to change the spark plugs. Said the engine needs to be jacked partway out of the car. Nice ride in the summer. In the winter the shocks are too stiff. Rough ride.

6.2 Sound Sytem Disaster

The sound system interface is awful, and now has become dangerous. When an iPhone 6S is connected via USB, the sound system will not recognize the USB input without repeatedly (3-6 times) switching between other "sources" such as Pandora and the USB. Switching between sources such as Pandora, FM radio and podcasts triggers the problem again while driving. This leads to seriously distracted driving and is a defective and dangerous defect.

It'll do

Smooth ride, tho sluggish acceleration. Dealership bragged about mileage- will have to rake their word for it. Handling OK, no need to switch between 2-4 wheel drive - full time "alert" through the car's computer. Interior OK - could be higher end with a touch here or there.

Great car except for smart phone integration!

Used to own a Honda Element but wanted to a more comfortable car with better gas mileage and up to date technology. And I should mention manual transmission. The Forester is the only choice for manual so I went with it. The 2016 Forester delivered on 3 out 4 on my wish list. I really like driving the car and have been averaging close 28 mpg overall with the manual. Love the way it momentarily breaks the car on uphill stops so it makes shifting a total breeze! Now for the major disappoint and Subaru needs to be called out on it! I was looking forward to using the Mirrorlink feature that would allow integration of cell phone apps (like a gps app on the phone) to display and be controlled by the headset displays and controls. BUT the version of Mirrorlink in the car is an old version (1.0) and is incompatible with the versions on smart phones (Mirrorlink 1.1) and you cant downgrade the phones. Subaru customer support has said it would be fixed but its been close to year and now customer support is clueless on it. In the meantime other options are becoming more accepted ... like Android Auto. So its very disappointing the Subaru has done nothing to fix a problem with there software and its looking doubtful they ever will.

My 1st sub

It's my first Subaru and it's my first brand new car. So far I have driven 1200 miles and its a joy to drive. I am loving this car as I get a better understanding of its various functions. I have not tested it yet in snow or other rough terrain so I can't speak of it. I hope my relationship with my Subaru will go on like this in coming years to come. But overall it's a nice car to drive.

It's very difficult to find another Subaru car/suv on the road or parking lots. Since we bought the Forester in mid-March, we have counted less than 10 Subaru in the last 3 weeks (not counting the cars in the dealer lots).

Always Wanted This Car

I have wanted a Subaru Forester since they first came out. But every time we went looking for a new car, a different dealer was willing to give us a better price, or different make of car came with more bells and whistles or better fuel economy. But this time we got the Forester and are very pleased that we did. We have an excellent view or the road, we feel safe, the car corners and handles quite well -- albeit not like a roadster -- the trim level has the features we wanted but not features we didn't want, and at least so far, fuel economy is better than advertised. Be warned, however, that you will find what you are looking for in the owner's manual only by accident.

Will know more in 5 years

We've owned the car now for 7 months, so we still can't rate any reliability categories, but it is comfortable with nice features and an almost reasonable price compared to other new vehicles in its class... of course, they're all overpriced. Sure would like to see a warranty that matches the claims of reliability, like a 5 year 60,000 mile bumper to bumper. So far we like the car, its features, and the way it handled in snow this winter.

Ok with one major flaw

I rented this car for a week and it was ok, but it has one major flaw. When I got the car from the rental place it was sunny and then I went driving in a wooded area that had shaded areas and I looked down at the speedometer and I could not tell what speed I was at because the speedometer and tach numbers are made with a muted washed out color, I had to take off my sun glasses and still had a hard time seeing the speedometer numbers. I turned on the lights to try and get some back lighting and it did not help much, and this was on a full sunny day. The speedometer and tach are positioned down into the dash board and the numbers are a weird muted washed out light color which are hard to read, and the small lcd screen between the speedometer and tach looks like something from 1970. I took pictures of this and plan to send them to subaru because it is a safety issue. Overal the car was good, but I could never buy one because I need to be able to see what speed I am at.

Very Happy with my new Forester

Have had my 2016 Forester for three weeks and about 800 miles. The CVT takes some getting used to , however, the gas mileage is impressive for all wheel drive, given this motor is not broken in yet and I'm getting 27.5 mpg in mixed driving. No rattles, issues or negative impressions. Considered this vehicle because my wife has the 2012 model and loves it and no issues with her vehicle either. The Subaru dealership was great to work with and I feel I got a very good deal. Time will tell but so far this Forester is proving this was the right choice !!!

Have owned this Forester for six months now and here is my update. Still no issues with anything. Changed the oil at 2000 miles, my choice, and no excessive consumption. Given this is a new vehicle and the motor is just braking in I'm very happy with it. Highway mileage is around 33 mpg. if I keep the speed under 70 mph. Over 70 and the mpg. drops quickly. At this point I would buy this vehicle again.

Great gas mileage! Roomy for compact SUV. Ride is little stiff. Only complaint is that the navigation system should be located near the top of the dash rather than in middle to make it easier to read while driving. Love the large sunroof.

Very happy!

We have only had our forester for a month and we already have 1500 miles on it. We have driven Hondas and toyotas and feel you can't beat them but loved the features of the forester. So far we are very impressed with the quality of our new Subaru and with Byers Subaru dealership. The salesperson told us to bring our car in as much as we wanted for a car wash. I was pleasantly surprised when they even sprayed off the all weather mats and swept the interior!

2016 Forester 2.5i

We have had this Forester for 4 months. We have the base model with a 6 speed manual transmission. Decent acceleration. Good mileage. Comfortable and smooth ride. Good visibility and comfort. So far we are averaging 27.3 mpg with mostly city driving. We love this SUV. It is our first Subaru. Used to own a 2011 Hyundai Tucson - and this Forester is a big step up.

Missing in Action

The Limited version I purchased omits many useful features that have been on all my previous cars at this cost and trim level. Here's a partial list: 1) ignition key does not fold so it stabs holes in pants pockets 2) there is no touch down for Passenger side window 3) there is no auto on for headlights at darkness 4) cruise control only increments in 5mph units after setting 5) there are no clothes hook hangers above back door entry 6) there is no overhead light in cargo area 7)the cargo mat is so rigid that it prevents entry to the useful underneath storage area. And I've only had the car for four weeks. The ride and comfort are as good as reported. I think the Eyesight feature, while usually good is overrated because my limited experience is that its response time is too long for cars cutting you off and thereby requiring instant braking.

Fun and easy to drive

This is a great car. I looked at all the competitors. CRV, Rav4, etc. Chose the Forester. Glad I did. Love the handling, in wet and especially snow. Did a lot of haggling and got a great deal. Mileage in town is about 26, in semi rural areas where the speed is slow but there are few stops, mileage is 34-37. Highway is 31. (I drive fairly economically)Passing is good on the highway. The mirror-link for your phone is a real pain in the ass. Love the visibility around the car. Love the cargo capacity. Roof rack is kind of noisy, but use it often. Liking the CVT trans. LOVE the pushbutton start.

Pleasantly surprised with first Subaru

The acceleration and handling is excellent. When I drive it it feels very stable and sure around obstacles. It is also surprisingly roomy inside.

Summary:

Car has 11,000 miles, automatic transmission. while driving straight on a highway using the cruise control set at 65 mph with the adaptive cruise control on (feet not touching the gas pedal or brake) the car engine rpm's began increasing till it reached the rev limiter. at the same time the engine rpm began revving high, the car began to coast as if it was in neutral. but the gear shift remained in drive. after a few seconds of the engine revving as high as it could, the engine shut off and i was able to get the car stopped. i had to put my hazards on and steer off to the shoulder to avoid getting hit from behind. this has happened to me twice. first time 10/8/15 the car would not start after i coasted to a stop and had to have it towed to the subaru dealer. they hooked the car up to their computer for a diagnostic test and found no error codes. second time this happened to me on 1/2/16 after stopping on the shoulder i was able to restart the car and drive home without using cruise control. the car is going back to the dealer for another test this friday 1/8/16. this whole process probably takes about 30 second or so. but its very dangerous. its almost as if the transmission is some how not engaged. since the cruise is set at 65 mph it tries to increases engine rpm to maintain 65 mph speed but the transmission is not engaged so car does not accelerate. cruise sees car slowing down so speeds up the engine to compensate. cars still doesn't speed up. eventually engine rpm maxes out for a few seconds and turns itself off. i feel like the problem lies with the transmission most likely or possibly the cruise control. i also notice when pulling out of a parking space going from reverse to drive it takes about 5 seconds for the transmission to engage. to the point that i roll back a few feet.

Summary:

In a closed parking lot, i was getting ready to park in a space. with my foot on the brake, i cut the wheel to the right and then eased my foot off the brake to maneuver into the parking spot. i pushed the brake again in preparation to straighten the wheels and finish parking, no speed registering on the gauge. with my foot on the brake the vehicle began to accelerate and jumped. i lifted my foot off the brake, and slammed it back down on the brake attempting to halt the vehicle. instead, with my foot still firmly on the brake, the vehicle accelerated again, and faster, right into a wall. i had been unable to straighten the wheels, so the impact was not head-on, but rather continuing the right-turn's angle, and impact occurred on the driver's side, front-end. 2 airbags deployed with a slight delay, causing severe bruising to my legs which affect my walking, and muscle tears causing severe neck and spine pain. though i was wearing my seatbelt during the collision, it retracted when i opened the door, and we were unable to dislodge it when we had to move the vehicle for towing. to reiterate, while attempting to park the vehicle at minimal speed, the vehicle accelerated on its own, with my foot firmly pressing the brake.

Subaru eyesight technology that prevents accidents and save lives is not offered on subaru forester basic model - subaru created 2 classes of citizens - who can afford expensive premium trims of subaru forester (you can have life saving technology) and those who can afford only basic trim (you are not allowed to have your car to be equipment with life saving eyesight technology - no money - die then). the reason - money grabbing! subaru wants to force buyers to buy more expensive trims. but this technology is most needed for parents (who can be distracted by i.e. choking child) and parents usually have a lot of expenses and cannot afford expensive trims. this money grabbing discrimination is criminal and kills children! i see a lot of accidents caused by parents distracted by children - how many children have to die because subaru wants to grab more money and do not offer life saving eyesight on basic trim of subaru forester. please note that i will be writing to members of congress (i want congress to have a hearing on that criminal discrimination that kills children) and your action taken will be included in that hearing.

The base model steel wheel has a trough running around the inside of the wheel, two inches wide and one inch deep. snow packs into the wheels, melts, and overnight the water that accumulates in the trough at the base of the wheel freezes solidly. it will not break loose. this ice block is the equivalent of a very large wheel balance weight. the car shakes violently at speeds over 45 mph. this represents a significant immediate safety issue as well as a long term safety issue due to the likely damage to the alignment and front end of the vehicle. this happened twice within six weeks. the dealer's response was to take it to car wash. i wrote subaru of america and was told they will pass my experience on to new product development.

My sister and i bought this car on mar. 25, 2016. on april 6, 2016 the car stalled on her twice. she was coming out of a store parking lot, and crossed the intersection turning left and the car stalled in the middle of the road in the intersection on the broken yellow lines. she had to put her car on 'park' and restart. the second incident happened the same way, coming out of a parking lot but didn't reach the center of the street, and stalled on the fast lane of oncoming traffic. she did the same, put the car in 'park' and restarted. i then took her car to the dealer on thursday night 4/7/16 and left the car there with 382 miles on it. the service advisor did tell me that they did have another incident similar....some people were test driving a forrester and and it had to be towed back to the dealer, and they found that a fuel line was crinkled. she said, i hope this wasn't the car. they did check the car with a laptop, but drove it for only 1 or 1-1/2 miles and found nothing wrong. i brought the car home and have 385 miles on it now. my concern is, that i don't want my sister to be in an unsafe situation, she just recent lost her husband of 57 years, and i convinced her to trade in her minivan for a smaller safer vehicle.
