2016 Toyota Sienna Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

The 2016 Toyota Sienna continues to be one of the best minivans on sale today. It can get pricey in its upper trim levels, but the Sienna offers a level of refinement that few others can emulate.

For sensible family transportation, you can't do much better than the 2016 Toyota Sienna. One of the best minivans in the business, it offers seating for eight and class-exclusive available all-wheel drive. Overall, the Sienna effortlessly holds its own against its fellow top-rated minivans, the Honda Odyssey and Kia Sedona. With seating for eight and available all-wheel drive, the 2016 Toyota Sienna is an ultra-practical family hauler. The Sienna was significantly refreshed last year, and we took special notice of the heavily revised interior that featured more user-friendly center stack controls. They're located closer to the driver than before, and the climate controls are easier to understand and use. Toyota also substantially improved interior materials quality, making the van seem like you're truly getting your money's worth. Delivering a comfortable ride has always been a Sienna high point, and last year's structural and suspension improvements make it ride and handle even better than before. And if you want a minivan that feels less like a minivan, the SE version boasts sharper steering and a more controlled suspension. It's definitely not sporty, but it's one of the best of its kind to drive. We also appreciate that unlike in the past, the SE is available with most of the creature comforts found on other Sienna trims. As such, it's the one we'd most recommend. As agreeable as the 2016 Toyota Sienna is, however, it's wise to check out the handful of other choices. The 2016 Honda Odyssey is the most direct rival, with similar pricing and a few exclusive features of its own. Top value can be found with the 2016 Kia Sedona, which gives up little (if anything) to the Honda and Toyota, while costing less. All of the above also offer seating for eight passengers. If you can make do with seven seats, consider the funky and efficient 2016 Nissan Quest, but we would steer clear of the aging 2016 Chrysler Town & Country and its Dodge Grand Caravan sibling.

Roomy, comfortable and offered in several different trim levels, the Toyota Sienna minivan is an excellent choice for families.

Siri Eyes Free functionality for iPhone users is standard across the board. Certain models also get the Scout GPS Link app, which displays smartphone navigation on the central display.

Mixed reviews

AWD averages 21 mpg. No spare tire in AWD model, Run flat tires only. VERY under powered. Cruise control extremely slow to respond. Audio system is poorly designed. Radio has to be manually switched from radio to Bluetooth. Touch screen is unresponsive. This is in comparison to a 2014 Ford Fusion. I am very disappointed with the technology and mostly the extreme lack of engine responsiveness. A/C isn't very cold

Best family car.

If you have 2 or more kids then it's great, because of enough interior room and easy in an out for kids. Also good entertainment system to keep kids busy.

Good Value

The defrost doesn't seem to defrost very fast and the captain seats are very comfortable when trying to recline. Everything else about the car is really cool. Several hidden features that are really neat. Not very luxurious but it is very fancy. I like it and I enjoy driving it.

Pacifica is better.......

I upgraded from the 2012 Sienna to the 2017. The 2017 Sienna was fine/slightly disappointing, until I rented the new Pacifica for a week on vacation and realized how much better it was. The new Sienna transmission makes acceleration noisy and delayed. Which makes the engine seem under-powered, and not as easy/responsive as the 2012. The electronics stack in the 2017 is better than the 2012, but still feels dated compared to other new cars. Everything else is the same as what they introduced 7 years ago. Now just disappointed.

2017 VERSATILITY, COMFORT, AND STYLE

After 50 years of marriage my wife and I have leased, purchased, or used as a company provided car over 60 vehicles. This includes a top of the line 40' diesel pusher motorhome. At our age we decided to downsize homes, vehicles, and other toys for mini-size STYLE, COMFORT, AND ROOM. The 2017 Sienna met all those needs and more. First, the ride is smooth without feeling every bump in the road. (If you want a stiff ride you can get the sporty version.) Next, is the seating. The second row seats are the same size and quality as the front seats. They don't fold down level and out of the way, but they can be removed if necessary for a full cargo capacity. The third row of seats can fold down and out of the way or provide a nice well for holding groceries. It has all the modern electronics popular today, including an "Easy Speak" feature--a mic with speaker for rear-seat passenger hearing from the front. Although the roof rack cross bars are easily adjustable, they do not have any locking feature that would prevent theft, but there are two rings to which cable locks could be attached to prevent theft. I made two steel bars to bolt to the rings between the cross bars. Our roof top cargo carrier rides great holding four sets of golf clubs. I've read some of the negative reviews (acceleration et. al.) but I have found none of them to be true for us. As I said, we've had the best and the most expensive, but this minivan really meets our needs.

Be careful - comfortable yet dangerous

This is a cautionary note to not buy a Toyota Siena and to warn about the lack of help Tim's Toyota is in advocating for Toyota owners.
We purchased a certified used Toyota Siena from another dealer in 2007. We purchase the van in anticipation of our soon arriving triplets. In anticipation of their arrival we needed an automobile which could accommodate 4 car seats, one car seat for our one year old and 3 for our soon arriving triplets. We found a Toyota Sienna that seemed to fit the bill. While having lovely amenities like DVD system, heated seats, automatic doors, it has been one hazard after another.
In 2008, not quite a year after purchasing the certified pre-owned van, we were driving with our 4 young children, three nine month olds and a 17 month old, from Phoenix to Prescott in August. While on highway 17 and 103 degrees outside our air conditioning went out without warning. Our children were quickly overheating. We stopped frequently to get wet cloths and ice to keep our children safe. We took the van to Tim's Toyota. The van had not more than one thousand miles beyond the 36,000 mile warranty. The entire air conditioning system needed to be replaced and Tim's refused to offer any flexibility. With less than one thousand miles over the warranty, they refused to offer any middle ground and we needed to pay for the new air conditioning system. By the way, that system is now out again at 80,000 miles on the same vehicle.
We have had the automatic side doors fail three times. Each time we have had to pay $1,800 - 2,000. The first time the side door failed my children were being picked up from school. The door failed to close when we stopped to get gas in route from school pick up to home. I needed to drive with the children strapped in their seats while one side door did not close. The dealership said "this is a common problem with this model" yet offered no middle ground, we paid to have the door fixed. Two years later the opposite door had similar difficulties. This week the original door with problems broke. The automated system caused a cable to snap, which hit the window shattering it inside the vehicle. It is a miracle that my children were not in the vehicle. Had their been anyone seated other than in the front seats, those seated in the middle and back would have been seriously injured by the shattered glass that splintered through the car. When we took the car to Tim's again we hear" this is a common problem with this vehicle". Their suggestion was not have the door operate manually rather than paying the $1250.00 cost to fix the automatic door with certainty that the issue will happen again. Their suggestion was to have the door operate manually for much less and reduce another malfunction of the same scale. When the door broke and cable snapped glass was splintered all through the interior of the van.
In sum, this is unacceptable. Do not buy this vehicle. This vehicle is marketed and sold as a family and safe vehicle. These are not true statements. As a mother and consumer, I am disappointed with Toyota. The safety of my children have been jeopardized multiple times. I find our local dealership to be less than helpful in issues they describe as" common to the vehicle". Do not buy a Toyota Sienna. I suggest another make to help protect your children and wallet.

Minivans are not just for soccer moms

The car is well appointed and provides a very comfortable ride. The road noise is not excessive and I really enjoy the hands free phone features. I can hear the phone conversation better while driving than when I'm not in the van.

Toyota van with defective Firestone tires.

I bought Toyota Sienna minivan from Coggin Toyota at the Avenues, Jacksonville FL. Now they have Firestone tires when you buy a van. These are defective tires and it can be blown anytime anywhere. I got my front passenger tire blown out and now the dealer says it is not covered. What are they thinking by cheating the customers by putting defective tires. I also took extended coverage from Mark Wootan who charged me additional 4000 dollars. He told me it will cover for 100000 miles for interior and exterior, all electronics, body, etc etc. Now the tire got blown away in less than 7500 miles which is not even a year of buying a new van. Now they say it is not covered. If the tire is not covered what about TPMS, Blind spot indicator, ABS? At least these should cover. Those are part of electronics. They did not repair TPMS, Blind spot indicator, ABS. Overall Toyota is making money out of customers by telling BS stories.

My Dream Came True

Love, love my van! Only 2 things I wish I could have upgraded: 1) a built in navigation system 2) a dvd system built into the front of each headrest. But I already had a Garmin from my previous van, so that solved that issue. Then I went online and ordered 2 dvd players, so that issue is solved as well! Now my van is complete!

My first Sienna that I had almost 15 years was great but this one is even better! I tried to go smaller, but the Sienna is so practical with all of it's comfortable seating and storage that I had to stick with the minivan. It rides beautifully!

Excellent $$ value. Beautiful exterior color and finish, exactly what we wanted. Outstanding customer service beginning with sales office (Paul Ward), and including everyone we encountered. From front door to back office, what a friendly, attentive professional staff at Milton Ruben dealership. Excellent Toyota quality, reliability, and resale value. Highly recommend.

Beware matching price claims

Edmunds was great to find the car I wanted and help with pricing. I shopped a couple of dealers and one, Bob Baker Toyota, claimed they would beat another's price, when I got there the manager said he made a mistake. Beware of such claims and gimicks. Toyota of San Diego seemed much more straitforward and honest.

2nd Sienna

This is my 2nd Sienna and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I purchased my 1st Sienna 9 years ago when I found out I was pregnant with twins. 129,000 and not one problem!!!! The new 2016 Sienna has awesome features (Bluetooth, navigation, blue ray player, gaming options), and 8 passenger seating is definitely a PLUS!

The ride and cabin quality is good. Compare to Honda Odyssey, it will be nice to include the rear view side mirror camera. However, I still like Toyota better due to my prior experience on my 2007 Civic.

Great value, but squeaky seat is big detractor

I'd owned an Odyssey (with the repeated brake issues) and a Pilot, but after doing a significant amount of research, decided to go with the 2016 Sienna. Nothing beats a minivan for hauling kids, dogs and everybody's associated stuff (kids and crap). Drives well, great visibility, decent acceleration, seats are comfortable, but...there's this nagging squeak from the seat behind the driver's seat. Oh my goodness, it is making me crazy. I've had the dealer check it out (of course it's "Ma'am, we couldn't duplicate it"; put the jump seat in its spot, moved the seat back and forth, adjusted it, fastened all the seat belts, removed every single piece of anything floating around the inside and, no change. I will bring it up again at the 10k maintenance visit, but I'm pretty confident I'll get the same response as the first. I know there was a problem with the 2010/11 in the third row, but everything I'd read had stated it was resolved. And, here I am. It's enough to make me want to get rid of it. Maybe I am being a princess, but I would expect that at 36k plus, that there would not be these types of issues. Wish me luck. Peace, out.

Nice Van, OK Price, Limited Technology

Our buying decision was largely based on the availability of AWD. Toyota is the only mini-van available with AWD. That fact aside, we've been pleased with the vehicle so far. The ride is "comfy firm" but not harsh. The noise level is quite good, even with 55 series tires. The driveability around town is nice, and it drives better than I expected on the twisty roads. Visibility is quite good. The seats are comfortable, but we haven't driven any 12 hour days yet. The interior layout in the front is good and driver ergonomics are convenient and pleasant. Second row seats are as good as the front and the fore/aft adjustment adds to the versatility when hauling a variety of people and cargo. Blind spot monitoring is a new and helpful feature for me. The navigation and bluetooth functions work well, and the voice controls worked without an extensive training procedure. The price seemed high for the level of technology included. There's no type of lane departure or radar assisted braking offered with going to a premium or signature version. Parker Toyota was excellent to deal with.

Great family car

Update. We have had our sienna for five months now and still like it a lot. however the mpgs are not as good as i thought. We still have our 04 sienna that we constantly get 25 mpgs. This new one only gets 20 with same driver and conditions. Highway driving not much better. I feel like Toyota has gone backwards in 12 years very disappointing, Hard to see dash when headlights are not on. still a great van just cant understand how these were overlooked.

NOT buying Black Interior in Texas Heat

This is a great car and I was ready to buy a Red SE -- until I found out that the Red exterior color in the SE only came with a black interior. Now I'm not buying this year; hope Toyota provides a tan or light gray option with Red SE next year.

New Toyota guy

Prior to owning a Toyota sienna I owned a Honda Odyssey for 11 years. There was always one thing that bugged me about my 2005 Odyssey. There was a whistling noise that came through the front defroster vents when driving at high speeds. I learned to live with it. Other than that the car was fantastic. I am now the owner of a 2016 Toyota Sienna XLE 8 passenger. The car has been great. I like the look of the vehicle and it is comfortable and handles well. I did notice one thing on this car that bugs me and I guess I'm going to have to live with it. Every time I go over a bump there is a squeaking noise that comes from the rear drivers side seat. I assume it happens because the 8th seat is not connected although I haven't checked that out yet. 99 percent of the time I will not be using the extra seat. To be honest both the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey are about the same. The reason I went with the Toyota Sienna was the outside appearance of the car and the interior layout. Plus I think the idea of putting a vacuum it the Odyssey was a stupid idea. Waste of space. In the Sienna you can store the extra seat in that space so you don't have to bring it in and out of the car when you want to use it.
Update to Review: This weekend I put the 8th seat (jump seat) in the car. Squeaking stopped. I'm not that happy that I'll have to listen to all that squeaking since I usually do not leave the extra seat in place. Anybody else have the same issue?

Crash Avoidence

I especially like the crash avoidance for the front. I put a piece of plywood up on the Driveway and drove toward it. The car braked and stopped just like it was supposed to. This is one feature I was really looking for as I approach old age.

Summary:

The vans that have been converted to a handicap/mobility van are unsafe for others to drive once the driver seat has been removed. i have contacted the local company responsible for the conversion, and they told me to sit on a dinning room chair or a bucket. that is definitely not a safe option when a non handicap person needs to move or drive the van. i believe there needs to be a seat made that can clip into the wheel chair clamps that the handicap driver uses.

Summary:

This is a brand new car we purchased from the dealer. we wanted to find out what type (the manufacturer) of airbag was installed in the car. the dealer does not know. toyota headquarter refused to give out.

Date Complaint Filed: 05/31/2016

Component(s): VISIBILITY/WIPER

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

Bought the car, new, a little over a month ago. 3 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase. have driven the car under 800 miles. car has been covered, in our driveway, since may 20th. came out yesterday (may 30th) to move it. uncovered it and found the crack along the lower section of the windshield. it was not there when i covered it on the 20th. there is no evidence of "chip or damage" just the crack (which was not there when the car was covered). car was stationary, in our driveway on a private, gated street, covered. concerned that there is a faulty design issue and that will happen again. scares me to think it could happen when i'm driving with others in the car. toyota is not taking responsibility. they have told me to bring it in for "evaluation". the dealership is 45 minutes away, and i do not think it is safe to drive.

Date Complaint Filed: 07/25/2016

Component(s): SEATS

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

The headrests tilt so far forward that they cause neck pain, particularly on trips of longer than 15 minutes. they should not be so far forward that one's head is in contact with the headrest at all times, or if they do need to be that far forward, they should not be at such an angle as to press the head forward and down.

Date Complaint Filed: 09/18/2016

Component(s): EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

Blind spot monitor only activates when passing car reaches rear fender which is insufficient warning -- unsafe at all speeds. if you were to depend on it when changing lanes it could cause a serious accident. my 2013 lexus also has bsm which operates perfectly with good and sufficient warning for lane change.

Date Complaint Filed: 09/27/2016

Summary:

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 toyota sienna. while driving approximately 65 mph, the contact lost control of the steering wheel. the contact was not able to stop the vehicle and the electronic brake warning indicator illuminated. the contact crashed into a road sign. the air bags did not deploy. a police report was filed. there were minor injuries that did not require medical attention. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 9,000.

Date Complaint Filed: 12/16/2016

Component(s): VISIBILITY/WIPER

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

This new toyota sienna 2016 was delivered with a defective front windshield with distortion at the center bottom. it causes the road markings to become wavy and distorted, and is dangerously distracting especially at night or in low light situations. the dealer was immediately notified, and checked other siennas on the lot, all of which have the same defect. the dealer directed us to toyota, and toyota failed to respond and did not correct the issue.since it is apparently a vehicle wide defect, it seems a recall would be required to address the issue.
