What is a VIN?

The VIN is located in a number of places on a car, but most commonly on the dashboard (you can see it through the windshield) and the drivers side door jamb sticker. On some vehicles the VIN is also placed on the engine, hood, and other parts. The VIN may also appear on car titles, insurance policies, service records and police reports for the vehicle.

Decoding VIN Numbers For A Mini

The 17-digit VIN number assigned to every Mini sold in America is like a puzzle that you can solve in order to learn about the options of the vehicle and the basics of its history. You simply have to decode it.

Decoding the full VIN number, however, is a real challenge. For the average consumer, it is far easier to type the VIN number into the search engine and let us give you the vehicle's full history.

We do give you the option to get much of the decoding done yourself if you provide us with your email address. We'll send you a link for a free downloadable VIN decoding guide.

As a first step, however, you can decode if the VIN you have been given may correspond to a Mini. This is a two-step process:

  • Step One: Look at the first three digits.
  • Step Two: Make sure they read WMW.

It should be noted that other types of vehicles also use the WMW designation, so once you have seen them you should also perform a more detailed search to confirm the model.

History Of Mini

The Mini was born in the aftermath of World War II, when the UK faced a gasoline shortage and needed to find a way to offer people more fuel-efficient cars. They decided to do so in 1957 by creating an automobile that was only 10 feet long. To do so was a challenge they eventually solved by putting the gear box under the engine, and in 1959 the first Mini was launched.

Since then, Mini has continued to make small cars and vans for people who live in cities with difficult parking or are worried about gasoline costs. The company has changed ownership five times over the years, and today is owned not by a British company, but by BMW in Germany.

Their most popular model, the Mini Cooper, is an iconic model in the UK automotive industry.
